The challenging task of defining spirituality

The influence of spirituality on caregiver burden and quality of life in older adult informal caregivers

BACKGROUND

Caregiver burden (CB) reduces quality of life (QOL) and causes poor health outcomes. Spirituality impacts this relationship.

AIMS

To determine prevalence of CB and investigate relationships among CB, spirituality, and QOL in older U.S. adult informal caregivers (n = 754).

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional, descriptive secondary analysis of data from the 2020 Health and Retirement Study using GLM and SEM.

RESULTS

Caregiver mean age was 65.93 (SD=8.37). Caregivers were primarily female (n = 456, 54.0%), White (n = 500, 79.5%), and married (n = 469, 65.3%). Most caregivers had moderate CB (n = 369, 49.8%). Black caregivers who were spiritual (p=.031) and caregivers with a high school diploma/GED who were spiritual (p=.021) had lower CB. Lower CB was correlated with higher QOL (p=< 0.001). SEM depicting an influencing effect of spirituality revealed good model fit (NFI=0.988; IFI=0.993; TLI=0.983; PCFI=0.397, RMSEA=0.043; χ2=9.577, p=.048, DF=4) CONCLUSIONS: Fostering spirituality in older adult caregivers could reduce CB and improve QOL.

Unconscious Spirituality: Toward a Contemporary Conceptualization

Until now, the concept of unconscious spirituality has not received sufficient academic attention. Despite the fact that it surfaces now and then in various psychotherapeutic theories and clinical practice, it lacks appropriate conceptualization. The aim of this article is to address this issue. We shall begin with a short presentation of the history and complexity of the concept of unconscious spirituality. Subsequently, we will discuss at some length the theories of James and Jung, to then focus on the much less explored work of Victor Frankl. Lastly, we will turn to some contemporary clinical theories and conclude with a proposal for defining unconscious spirituality as an unperceived connection with the sacred, especially as a connection with one's true self or spiritual core. We hope that this will be a meaningful contribution to developing a more inclusive and universal conceptualization of unconscious spirituality.

The Role of Spirituality during Suicide Bereavement: A Qualitative Study

Background: A loved one’s loss due to suicide can be a traumatic experience and trigger a complex grief process. Although spirituality, defined as a search for the Sacred in a broad sense, can be a resource and an obstacle in coping with the suicide bereavement process, there is a gap in scientific understanding of the role spirituality plays during the process. Methods: To explore the role of spirituality in people bereaved by suicide, we recruited 11 women who lost a life partner due to suicide. We conducted semi-structured interviews and analyzed the data using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: We identified the following three themes: spirituality is a supportive resource that can be reached for or achieved without conscious involvement; spirituality provides helpful ways to cope with grief; spirituality makes the grief process more difficult. Conclusions: Spirituality, if personally meaningful and supported by others, can function as a resource after a loved one’s suicide and even add to post-traumatic growth after the loss. On the contrary, spirituality-related issues, such as stigmatization and a lack of personally meaningful traditions, can distress the bereaved. Difficult spiritual experiences and questions can become an intricate part of the grief process.

A "Viral Epistolary" and Psychosocial Spirituality: Restoring Transcendental Meaning During COVID-19 Through a Digital Community Letter-Writing Project

This article outlines the results of a three-month-long community letter-writing and letter-sharing project called "Viral Epistolary" (VE), which we completed online in Italy during the first wave of COVID-19 lockdowns. In it, we collected 340 digital letters from all over the country and connected thousands of people through epistolary exchanges. We used the genre of letters as a mediating, meaning-making, and (auto)biographical tool whereby people could share their experiences of domestic isolation and physical distancing, thus creating a community of support. Based on a well-documented understanding of meaning-making as a core human endeavor, especially in times of social disruption and personal crisis, this article frames sense-making as a transcendental and even spiritual process that yields broad principles for organizing life. Thus, the research adopts a psychosocial perspective on spirituality and applies thematic analysis to qualitatively analyze written narratives. The results reveal that many respondents underwent a three-part, not-necessarily-sequential process of collapsing, self-distancing, and transcending during lockdown, which allowed them to rearrange themselves according to the new total social fact of the pandemic. Through this process, respondents negotiated themes of semiotic crisis, striving for meaning, and beyond meaning (the essential). Finally, the article discusses the role of meaning as a transcendental component of psychosocial meaning-making coping processes and tries to highlight how shared writing experiences can stimulate personal and communal healing processes in the wake of social crises.
