Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, slightly curved rod-shaped bacterium with multiple flagella, designated strain EGI 63088T, was isolated from a bulk soil of Kalidium foliatum, collected from Wujiaqu in Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, PR China. The optimal growth temperature, salinity, and pH for strain EGI 63088T growth were 30 °C, 3% (w/v) NaCl and 8, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain EGI 63088T showed the highest sequence similarities to Halomonas heilongjiangensis 9-2T (97.94%), H. lysinitropha 3(2)T (97.51%), and H. daqiaonensis CGMCC 1.9150T (97.08%). The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between the strain EGI 63088T and H. heilongjiangensis 9-2T were 89.03 and 41.10%, respectively. The DNA G + C content of the genome for strain EGI 63088T was 66.3 mol%. The most prevalent antibiotic resistance and virulence-related genes in Halomonas genomes were Streptomyces cinnamoneu EF-Tu mutant, pilT, and cheY, respectively. The predominant fatty acids of strain EGI 63088T were summed feature 8 (C18: 1 ω6c and/or C18: 1 ω7c), summed feature 3 (C16: 1 ω6c and/or C16: 1 ω7c), and C16: 0; its major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-9 (Q-9), and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine. According to the above results, strain EGI 63088T is considered a novel species of the genus Halomonas, for which the name Halomonas flagellata sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is EGI 63088T (= KCTC 92047T = CGMCC 1.19133T).

Abstract
Controlling the content of biogenic amines (BAs) is critical to guarantee the safety of fermented aquatic products. The degradation characteristics and application potential of amine-negative starter cultures (Virgibacillus halodenitrificans CGMCC 1.18601: G25, Virgibacillus pantothenticus CGMCC 1.18602: G38) screened from grasshopper sub shrimp paste (Gssp) were studied. The enzymes of the two strains G25 and G38 that degrade BAs were amine oxidases (AOs) located on their respective cell membranes. The conditions that promoted the AO activity of Virgibacillus spp. were NaCl concentrations 5–10%, temperature 37 °C, pH 7.0 and ethanol concentrations 0–2%. Safety assessments (antibiotic susceptibility, biofilm activity and hemolytic activity) indicated that Virgibacillus spp. do not present a risk to human health, and this isolate can be confidently recommended as safe starter cultures for the food industry. Then, the two strains were cultured separately as starters and applied to the Gssp to analyze their influence on the flavor and quality of the product. As far as the bad flavors in Gssp such as sulfur-organic and sulf-chlor were concerned, the response values in the starter groups by G25 and G38 were significantly reduced by 39% and 65%, respectively. For the ability of strains to degrade BAs in Gssp, G25 degraded 11.1% of histamine, 11.3% of tyramine, 15.5% of putrescine and 4.1% of cadaverine; G38 significantly degraded 10.1% of histamine, 21.8% of tyramine, 18.1% of putrescine and 5.0% of cadaverine. These results indicated that the selected species could be used as starter cultures for the control of BA accumulation and degradation in Gssp.

Abstract
The bacterial profiles of 63 grasshopper sub shrimp paste samples collected from seven typical regions around the Bohai Sea were investigated by high-throughput sequencing. Tetragenococcus muriaticus was found to be the prevailing species present in all the samples, and the presence of T. muriaticus also weakly correlated with the histamine content in the samples. Six T. muriaticus strains with low biogenic amine (BA)-producing ability and deficient in histamine production were identified and subjected to safety assessment. All six strains displayed weak resistance to fifteen known antibiotics as based on the Enterococcus breakpoint values. None of the strains exhibited hemolytic activity or biofilm formation. All strains exhibited were able to grow on MRS agar containing 21% NaCl and expressed amine oxidase and strain-specific proteases and lipases. Most of the strains exhibited acid production at 18% NaCl. Moreover, three of the strains (designated as SG, TS, and QH) with histamine degradation ability were inoculated into separate shrimp paste samples to determine their effect on BA accumulation. The results indicated that the addition of T. muriaticus to shrimp pastes not only led to a significant reduction of BA content in the pastes but also improved the flavor of the pastes. Consequently, these strains may be used as potential candidates for controlling the content of histamine in fermented foods.

Abstract
The symptoms of foodborne histamine poisoning are similar to those of IgE-mediated food allergies. In this study, we investigated the histamine-binding capacity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains as potential preventive agents against histamine poisoning. Histamine biosorption capacity was determined for 16 LAB strains. Leuconostoc mesenteroides TOKAI 51 m, Lactobacillus paracasei TOKAI 65 m, Lactobacillus plantarum TOKAI 111 m and Pediococcus pentosaceus TOKAI 759 m showed especially high biosorption rates and reached saturation within 30 min. Adsorption isotherms showed better conformance to the Freundlich model than to the Langmuir model. Analyses after heat, periodic acid and guanidine hydrochloride treatments suggested that histamine was bound to the bacterial cell surface. HPLC analysis revealed that exopolysaccharides produced by Lact. paracasei TOKAI 65 m strongly bound to histamine. In the detachment test with 1 mol l-1 HCl solution, the dissociation rate of histamine for Lact. paracasei TOKAI 65 m was <10 %. This strain is presumably a suitable candidate for use against histamine poisoning.

Abstract
Salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses; a total of 3% of the world’s land mass is affected by salinity. Approximately 6.3 million hectares of land in Pakistan is affected by salinity to varying degrees, and most of the areas are arid to semiarid with low annual precipitation. The aim of the present study is to identify and characterize Bacillus and Bacillus-derived bacterial genera from the rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric soil samples from the Khewra Salt Mine, Pakistan, by using culture-independent and -dependent methods. Seven Bacillus-like bacterial genera, Bacillus, Halobacillus, Virgibacillus, Brevibacillus, Paenibacillus, Tumebacillus, and Lysinibacillus, were detected by using pyrosequencing analysis, whereas only four genera, Bacillus, Halobacillus, Oceanobacillus, and Virgibacillus, were identified by culture-dependent methods. Most of the Bacillus-like isolates identified in this study were moderately halophilic, alkaliphilic, and mesophilic bacteria and were considered a good source of hydrolytic enzymes because of their ability to degrade proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. Eight Bacillus-like strains from the genera Bacillus, Halobacillus, Oceanobacillus, and Virgibacillus showed positive results for the presence of ectABC gene cluster (ectoine), six strains could synthesize betaine from choline, and six strains tested positive for the synthesis of proline from either glutamate or ornithine by using proline dehydrogenase enzyme.
