Abstract
Smartphone-based assays to inspect pesticides in foods have attracted much attention as such assays can transform tedious laboratory-based assays into real-time, on-site, or even home-based assay and hence overcoming the limitations of conventional assays. Although an array of smartphone-based assays is available, information on the use of these assays for pesticides inspection is scattered. The purposes of this review are therefore to compile, summarize and discuss state-of-the-art as well as advantages and limitations of the relevant technologies. Suggestions are provided for further development of smartphone-based assays for rapid inspection of pesticides in foods. Smartphone-based assays relying on enzyme inhibitions are noted to be nonselective qualitative, capable of reporting results in a quantitative manner only when a sample contains an individual pesticide. Smartphone-based assays relying on chemical reactions also target only individual pesticides. Smartphone-based visible spectroscopy can, on the other hand, inspect individual and multiple pesticides with the aid of appropriate colorimetry-, luminescence-, or fluorescence-based assay. Smartphone-based visible-near infrared and Raman spectroscopies are suitable for simultaneous multiple pesticides inspection. Raman spectroscopy is of particular interest as it can detect pesticides even at lower concentrations. This spectroscopic technique can also serve as a real-time assay with the aid of cloud network computations.

Abstract
Fruits and vegetables are an important part of our daily diet and contain low-content components that are crucial for our health. Detecting these components accurately is of paramount significance. However, traditional detection methods face challenges such as complex sample processing, slow detection speed, and the need for highly skilled operators. These limitations fail to meet the growing demand for intelligent and rapid detection of low-content components in fruits and vegetables. In recent years, significant progress has been made in intelligent rapid detection technology, particularly in detecting high-content components in fruits and vegetables. However, the accurate detection of low-content components remains a challenge and has gained considerable attention in current research. This review paper aims to explore and analyze several intelligent rapid detection techniques that have been extensively studied for this purpose. These techniques include near-infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and terahertz spectroscopy, among others. This paper provides detailed reports and analyses of the application of these methods in detecting low-content components. Furthermore, it offers a prospective exploration of their future development in this field. The goal is to contribute to the enhancement and widespread adoption of technology for detecting low-content components in fruits and vegetables. It is expected that this review will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in this area.

Abstract
High-performance plasmonic substrates have recently attracted much research attention. Herein, a three-dimensional gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) spherical liquid array (SLA) with high "hot spots" and tunable nanometer gap by optimizing the proportion of AuNPs colloids over chloroform was synthesized based on a water-oil interfacial self-assembly strategy. The substrate demonstrated excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance using tetrathiafulvalene and rhodamine 6G (R6G) as probe molecules. With a simple extraction and soaking pretreatment process, the SLA exhibited high sensitivity for analysing triazophos on apple peels, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.005 µg/mL and recovery ranging from 96 to 110 %. Particularly, the chloroform produced an inherent characteristic peak at 665 cm-1, which was used as the internal standard to correct SERS signal fluctuation, leading to an improvement of the corresponding coefficient R2 from 0.97 to 0.99, thus improving the reproducibility. Therefore the SLA substrate possesses the potential for quantitative analysis of food contaminants.

Abstract
The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique is being increasingly used for the detection of pesticide residues in agricultural products. However, there are large amounts of fluorescence-producing substances in agricultural products, which seriously affect the Raman signal of the analyte. In this paper, the QuEChERS method was used to remove interfering fluorescent substances in the analyte, and the purification effects of different doses of nano bamboo charcoal (NBC) and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle (Fe3O4 MNP) adsorbents were studied. Meanwhile, the Raman spectral acquisition conditions (AuNPs, test solution, and NaCl) were optimized based on the orthogonal test method. The results showed that 300 µL AuNPs, 40 µL test solution, and 100 µL 1.5% NaCl gave the best SERS response effect. 12.5 mg NBC combined with 10 mg Fe3O4 MNPs could effectively remove the interfering substances from citrus. The Raman spectra of chlorpyrifos molecules were theoretically modeled using density-functional theory (DFT). By comparing the DFT results with the actual tests, five feature peaks, at 338, 522, 558, 672, and 1600 cm-1, were obtained for the detection of chlorpyrifos pesticide residues in citrus. Based on the Raman feature peak intensity at 672 cm-1, the concentration of chlorpyrifos in citrus showed a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9979) in the concentration range of 3-20 mg kg-1. The recovery rate was 92.12% to 98.38%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 1.77% to 5.29%. The lowest detection concentration was about 3 mg kg-1, and the detection time of a single sample could be completed within 15 min. This study showed that the combination of SERS and QuEChERS preprocessing methods could achieve rapid detection of chlorpyrifos pesticide residues in citrus.

Abstract
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) allows the ultrasensitive detection of analytes present in traces or even single molecule levels by the generation of electromagnetic fields. It is a powerful vibrational spectroscopic method that is capable to detect traces of chemical and biological analytes. SERS technique is involved in the extremely sophisticated studies of molecules with high specificity and sensitivity. In the vicinity of nanomaterials decorated surfaces, SERS can monitor extremely low concentrations of analytes in a non-destructive manner with narrow line widths. This review article is focused on some recently developed SERS-based sensors for distinct types of analytes like disease-related biomarkers, organic and inorganic molecules, various toxins, dyes, pesticides, bacteria as well as single molecules. This study aims to enlighten the arising sensing approaches based on the SERS technique. Apart from this, some basics of the SERS technique like their mechanism, detection strategy, and involvement of some specific nanomaterials are also highlighted herein. Finally, the study concluded with some discussion of applications of SERS in various fields like food and environmental analysis.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology has been revived and developed with the introduction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), while more valuable properties of MOFs for SERS substrates remain largely unexplored. This work constructed a new SERS substrate Fe3O4@UiO-66(Zr)@Ag nanoparticles (FUAs) with excellent SERS detection sensitivity, uniformity, reproducibility and stability, exhibiting a high Raman enhancement factor (5.62 × 106), low limit of detection (LOD, 2.11 × 10-11 M) and RSD (12.41 %) for 4-NBT, and maintaining 81 % SERS activity within 60 days. The FUAs took full advantage of the strong affinity of UiO-66(Zr) for organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) to realize trace OPs detection. The LODs of phoxim, triazophos and methyl parathion in apple juice were 0.041, 0.021 and 0.0031 mg/L, respectively, with good linearities ranging from 0.02 or 0.1-50 mg/L, meeting the requirements of the food control standards, indicating that the potentials and prospects of the FUAs SERS substrate for trace detecting OPs in foods.

Abstract
This work reports a sensitive SERS substrate based on graphene oxide (GO) and quantum-sized ZrO2 nanoparticles (GO/ZrO2) for label-free determination of the organophosphate pesticide methyl parathion (MP). The enhanced light-matter interactions and the consequent SERS effect in these substrates resulted from the effective charge transfer (CT) mechanism attributed to synergistic contributions of three main factors: i) the strong molecular adherence of the MP molecules and the ZrO2 surface which allows the first layer-effect, ii) the relatively abundant surface defects in low dimensional ZrO2 semiconductor NPs, which act as intermediate electronic states that reduce the large bandgap barrier, and iii) the hindered charge recombination derived from the transference of the photoinduced holes to the GO layer. This mechanism allowed an enhancement factor of 8.78 × 104 for GO/ZrO2-based substrates, which is more than 5-fold higher than the enhancement observed for platforms without GO. A detection limit of 0.12 μM was achieved with an outstanding repeatability (variation ≤4.5%) and a linear range up to 10 μM, which is sensitive enough to determine the maximal MP concentration permissible in drinking water according to international regulations. Furthermore, recovery rates between 97.4 and 102.1% were determined in irrigation water runoffs, strawberry and black tea extracts, demonstrating the reliability of the hybrid GO/ZrO2 substrate for the organophosphate pesticides quantification in samples related to agri-food sectors and environmental monitoring.

Abstract
Rapid and reliable detection and quantification of pesticide residues in complex matrices by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) remain challenging due to the low level of target molecules and the interference of nontarget components. In this study, SERS was combined with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) to develop a rapid and reliable method for the detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs). In this method, DLLME was used to extract and enrich two representative OPPs (triazophos and parathion-methyl) from a liquid sample, and a portable Raman spectrometer was used to analyze the separated sediment using homemade gold nanoparticles colloids as enhancing substrates. The results showed that the developed method displayed good sensitivity and stability for the detection and quantification of triazophos and parathion-methyl with R2 ≥ 0.98. The calculated limits of detection (LODs) in the simultaneous detection of triazophos and parathion-methyl were 2.17 × 10-9 M (0.679 ppb) and 2.28 × 10-8 M (5.998 ppb), and the calculated limits of quantification (LOQs) were 7.23 × 10-9 M (2.26 ppb) and 7.62 × 10-8 M (19.098 ppb), respectively. Furthermore, the developed SERS method was successfully applied to the detection of triazophos and parathion-methyl in apple juice with recoveries between 78.07% and 110.87% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) ≤ 2.06%. Therefore, the developed DLLME facilitated liquid SERS method exhibited good sensitivity and stability for the rapid detection and quantification of OPPs and had the potential to be applied to the rapid detection of OPPs in complex matrices.

Abstract
Recent global warming has resulted in shifting of weather patterns and led to intensification of natural disasters and upsurges in pests and diseases. As a result, global food systems are under pressure and need adjustments to meet the change—often by pesticides. Unfortunately, such agrochemicals are harmful for humans and the environment, and consequently need to be monitored. Traditional detection methods currently used are time consuming in terms of sample preparation, are high cost, and devices are typically not portable. Recently, Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has emerged as an attractive candidate for rapid, high sensitivity and high selectivity detection of contaminants relevant to the food industry and environmental monitoring. In this review, the principles of SERS as well as recent SERS substrate fabrication methods are first discussed. Following this, their development and applications for agrifood safety is reviewed, with focus on detection of dye molecules, melamine in food products, and the detection of different classes of pesticides such as organophosphate and neonicotinoids.

Abstract
Silver-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@AgNPs) were optimized with different gold (Au) core sizes and modified surface with mercaptooctane (MCO) to determine fungicide residues in pear fruit extracts. The developed MCO/Au@AgNPs with a gold core size of 28 nm and silver shell thickness of 6 nm exhibited high sensitivity and significant enhancement of Raman scattering in detecting tricyclazole (TCZ) and thiram fungicides in standard and pear fruit samples. The detection limits for TCZ and thiram in the pear fruit extracts were 0.005 and 0.003 ppm with coefficients of determination of (R2) of 0.9984 and 0.9971, percent recovery ranging from 82.7 to 107.4% and 80.7 to 109.8%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.5 to 7.9% and 3.7 to 9.5%, respectively. Results showed that this easily prepared method could be employed as SERS active platforms for the rapid assessment of trace contaminants of agrochemicals in agriculture production.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy based on thioglycolic acid (TGA) functionalized silver-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@Ag-TGANPs) was developed for the facile screening of thiabendazole (TBZ) and ferbam (0.025-10 ppm) in liquid milk for the first time. Results showed that silver-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@AgNPs) with a core size of 32 nm and a shell thickness of 5 nm was successfully modified with 3 nm TGA. The sensitive Au@Ag-TGANPs could enhance TBZ and ferbam signals by factors of 6.4 × 104 and 9.8 × 104, respectively, and achieved the detection of TBZ and ferbam with limits of detection of 0.12 and 0.003 ppm, R2 of 0.988 and 0.9821, percent recoveries of 88-103% and of 87.2-103.5%, and relative standard deviations of 4.1-9.2% and 3.5-8.3%, respectively. The current simple and green method could thus be used to detect other unsafe chemicals in future studies.

Abstract
The development of flexible and robust plasmonic substrates has become a hot research topic in simplifying and extending the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique for real-world analysis. In this work, a facile method to fabricate an Au@Ag nanoparticle array sandwiched between the adhesive acrylic polymer tape and polyethene terephthalate (PET) film (T/Au@Ag/PET) as a high-performance SERS chip was reported for nondestructive detection of thiram on fruit peels. For this SERS chip, the ordered Au@Ag nanoparticle array formed by the self-assembly method was closely-packed, which generated high-density sub-3-nm gaps and could produce high reproducible and sensitive SERS enhancement effects. The measurement of crystal violet with the limit of detection of 7.24 × 10-10 M was realized by targeting Raman shift at 1177 cm-1. Moreover, the excellent flexible feature of acrylic polymer tape enabled the substrate to withstand a tensile strain value of 20% for three cycles without significantly losing its SERS activity. By covering with a PET film, the SERS chip could maintain 87% SERS activity after storage for 60 days in the air environment, and could well withstand the influence of harsh conditions such as high temperature and ultrasound treatments. As a proof of the concept, the SERS tape was directly used to detect thiram on apple, tomato, and cucumber peels via a simple sampling-and-detection procedure, and the detection limit of 5 ng/cm2 was achieved. The T/Au@Ag/PET SERS chip should hold a promising candidate for food safety analysis in the future.

Abstract
We investigate localized plasmon-mode resonances in the scattering and absorption of transversely polarized light by bimetal core-shell nanowires made of silver and gold, in two possible combinations, using an analytical solution and experimental data for metal permittivities. In particular, the influence of the metal shell thickness and material on these resonances is studied. We show that, unlike metal nanotubes with dielectric filling, bimetal wires do not display plasmon-mode hybridization.

Abstract
A highly reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) unsupported liquid-state platform (ULP) was developed for accurate quantitative determination of triazophos. Herein, citrate-reduced Ag NPs suspension was concentrated and placed in a stainless steel perforated template to form the SERS ULP. The relative standard deviation of the SERS measurements was less than 5% (n ≥ 10), and the R2 of the calibration curve was 0.994. The developed SERS ULP was applied for determination of triazophos in spiked agricultural products (rice, cabbage, and apple). Experiment results showed that the coefficient of variation ranged from 5.3 to 6.2% for intra-day and from 5.5 to 6.3% for inter-day (n = 3), which proved excellent SERS reproducibility. Moreover, the results were in good agreement with those from HPLC analysis. As a liquid-state SERS substrate, the highly reproducible ULP can perform precision quantitative analysis without surface modification of NPs, which is a significant improvement. This method provides a new perspective for quantitative SERS analysis of pesticide residues. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
The excessive use or abuse of pesticides and veterinary drugs leads to residues in food, which can threaten human health. Therefore, there is an extremely urgent need for multi-analyte analysis techniques for the detection of pesticide and veterinary drug residues, which can be applied as screening techniques for food safety monitoring and detection. Recent developments related to rapid multi-residue detection methods for pesticide and veterinary drug residues are reviewed herein. Methods based on different recognition elements or the inherent characteristics of pesticides and veterinary drugs are described in detail. The preparation and application of three broadly specific recognition elements-antibodies, aptamers, and molecular imprinted polymers-are summarized. Furthermore, enzymatic inhibition-based sensors, near-infrared spectroscopy, and SERS spectroscopy based on the inherent characteristics are also discussed. The aim of this review is to provide a useful reference for the further development of rapid multi-analyte analysis of pesticide and veterinary drug residues.

Abstract
Existing approaches for the screening of unsafe materials in food matrices are time-consuming, tiresome and destructive in nature. Therefore, in the current study, a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method based on octanethiol-functionalized core-shell nanoparticles (Oct/Au@AgNPs) was established for rapid detection of ziram in apple and pear fruits. The morphology of substrate was evaluated using high-resolution TEM images and superimposed HAADF-STEM-EDS elemental mapping images, which confirmed that Au@AgNPs having gold (Au) core size of 28 nm in diameter and silver (Ag) shell of 5.5 nm in thickness were successfully grafted with octanethiol. The SERS method with the sensitive nanoparticles could detect ziram of up to 0.015 and 0.016 ppm in apple and pear with high coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.9987 and 0.9993, respectively. Furthermore, satisfactory recoveries (80-106%) were also accomplished for the fungicide in real samples. This work demonstrated that the functionalized silver-coated gold nanoparticles were easy to prepare and could be used as sensitive SERS platforms for monitoring of other agrochemicals in foods.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a widely used technique for drug detection due to high sensitivity and molecular specificity. The applicability and selectivity of SERS in the detection of specific drug molecules can be improved by gathering information on the specific interactions occurring between the molecule and the metal surface. In this work, multilayer gold-silver bimetallic nanorods (Au@Ag@AuNRs) have been prepared and used as platforms for SERS detection of specific drugs (namely promethazine, piroxicam, furosemide and diclofenac). The analysis of SERS spectra provided accurate information on the molecular location upon binding and gave some insight into molecule-surface interactions and selectivity in drug detection through SERS.

Abstract
Synthetic dyes have been widely applied to food processing, but abuse of colourants in food may pose risks to human health. To analyze new coccine (NC) and orange II (OII) in food, a versatile surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform was proposed. A metal-organic framework (MOF, UiO-66(NH2)) with octahedral crystal structure was synthesized and gold nanoparticles were grown on the MOF surface to fabricate UiO-66(NH2)@Au versatile SERS platform. The UiO-66(NH2)@Au displayed much better SERS performance than gold nanoparticles with high R2 of 0.9684 for NC and 0.9912 for OII and low LOD of 0.4015 mg/L for NC and 0.0546 mg/L for OII. The recoveries of NC and OII in Mirinda soft drink and paprika ranged from 82.92 to 109.63%. This study provided a sensitive and rapid method for determination of NC and OII through UiO-66(NH2)@Au, and the proposed SERS platform revealed great potential for analyzing synthetic colourants in food samples.

Abstract
Herein, we reported a simple, flexible and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to detect methyl parathion residues in real life. The substrate was fabricated by filter paper and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with excellent reproducibility and stability. First, Au NPs were synthesized by the seed mediated growth method and assembled to the filter paper through immersion. The Raman probe molecule 4-MBA was used to evaluate performance of the substrate for an optimized signal using a portable Raman spectrometer coupled with 785 nm laser. Then, the paper-based substrate was applied to detect methyl parathion standard solution whose detection limit was down to 0.011 μg/cm2, and the linear range was between 0.018 μg/cm2 and 0.354 μg/cm2. Afterwards, actual sample (apple) spiked with methyl parathion was taken to verify the practicality of the substrate by a simple way of "press-peel off". The recovery rate was ranged from 94.09% to 98.72%, indicating that this method is reliable in actual sample detection without complicated pretreatment steps. This work demonstrates that the flexible paper-based substrate combined with portable Raman instruments can be potentially applied to on-site detection of hazardous substances in the field of food safety.

Abstract
Mixed pesticides are usually applied to agricultural products to enhance agricultural production. However, their presence in the environment and food poses serious health risks to humans. Therefore, rapid and reliable detection methods for mixed pesticides residues are in need to minimize potential health hazards. Herein, a nondestructive and sensitive strategy was developed to determine thiram and thiabendazole (TBZ) mixture on fruit surface using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology coupled with interfacial self-assembly gold nanorods (Au NRs) array substrates together with self-modelling mixture analysis (SMA) method. Firstly, a large area high-density Au NRs array was fabricated by organic-aqueous interfacial self-assembly to serve as a sensitive SERS substrate for simultaneously screening of thiram and TBZ on the fruit surface. Then, an SMA method was employed to identify and separate the Raman spectrum for each pesticide from the Raman spectra of the pesticides mixture on the contaminated fruit surface. Results showed that using SERS technique with the SMA method, qualitative and quantitative analyses of a single component from the spectra of the mixture were simultaneously realized, and the resolved pure spectrum of each pesticide was presented. The limits of detection (LOD) of pesticides on the surface of apple, tomato and pear were 0.041, 0.029 and 0.047 ng/cm2 for thiram, and 0.79, 0.76 and 0.80 ng/cm2 for TBZ, respectively. It was anticipated that the proposed SERS detection approach combined with SMA methods should pave the way for detecting multi-analytes in practical applications for agriculture and food safety inspection.

Abstract
A cysteamine functionalized core shelled nanoparticles (Au@Ag-CysNPs) was presented for simultaneous and rapid detection of sodium thiocyanate (STC) and benzoic acid (BA) preservatives in liquid milk using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique. A spectrum covering 350-2350 cm-1 region was selected to detect STC with concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 10 mg/L and BA with concentrations ranging from 15 to 240 mg/L in milk samples. Characterization of nanoparticles using high-resolution TEM confirmed that the successful synthesis of Au@AgNPs with core (gold) size of 28 nm and shell (silver) thickness of about 5 nm was grafted with 120 μL of 0.1 nM cysteamine hydrochloride. Results showed that Au@Ag-CysNPs could be used to detect STC up to 0.03 mg/L with a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.039 mg/L and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9833 in the milk sample. For detecting BA, it could be screened up to 9.8 mg/L with LOQ of 10.2 mg/L and R2 of 0.9903. The proposed substrate was also highly sensitive and the employed method involved only minor sample pretreatment steps. It is thus hoped that the new substrate could be used in the screening of prohibited chemicals in complex food matrices in future studies.
