Can Singing in a Choir Be a Key Strategy for Lifelong Health? A Cross-sectional Study

INTRODUCTION

Singing in a choir can play a significant role in a strategy for lifelong health. This study aimed to assess the nutritional status and the quality of life of healthy adults singing in a choir.

METHODS

The cross-sectional study, carried out from August 2017 to June 2018, was preceded by a weekly pilot study. A total of 100 choristers (72 women, 72.0%) aged 19-70 years (mean age was 38.30 ± 15.99 years) were included in the study. The control group consisted of 100 healthy adults (68 women, 68.0%) aged 19-70 years (mean age was 38.48 ± 16.09).

RESULTS

Significantly lower body weight and body mass index and significantly lower results of selected body composition components (P< 0.05) were found in the study group in comparison with the control group. The choristers showed significantly lower values of basal metabolic rate (P= 0.004) and metabolic age (P< 0.001). In addition, a significantly higher quality of life was observed in the group of choristers in each of the domains tested (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Singing in the choir may have effect on lifelong health, defined as better nutritional status and better perception of quality of life and health.

Implementing Nutrition Education Programs in Congregate Dining Service Settings: A Scoping Review

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Nutrition education programs implemented in congregate dining service (CDS) settings have the potential to improve healthy eating behaviors among older adult populations. However, little is understood about the types of nutrition education programs that are implemented at CDS sites and the factors that impede or promote implementation efforts. The purpose of this scoping review was to examine the characteristics of CDS nutrition education programs, barriers and supports to program implementation, and opportunities to enhance implementation of programming.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

We adopted a scoping review methodology to assess the relevant literature published January 2000 - January 2020 by accessing CINAHL, SocINDEX, MEDLINE, AgeLine, and Academic Search Complete.

RESULTS

We identified 18 studies that met our inclusion criteria. The majority of nutrition education programs were led by trained facilitators, included the use of interactive activities, and also incorporated written or video materials. Programs that were adapted to the needs of older participants were perceived as supports to implementation whereas participants' needs and resources (e.g., lack of resources, lower health literacy) were occasionally found to limit effective implementation of programming.

DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS

As the older adult population continues to access CDS sites to address their health and nutritional needs, purposeful efforts are needed to examine the specific approaches that can support nutrition education program implementation. Future research is needed to assess strategies that are effective for mitigating barriers to implementing nutrition education programming in the CDS setting.

Health Communication and the Arts in the United States: A Scoping Review

OBJECTIVES

Guided by the hypothesis that the arts can play a role in changing attitudes, beliefs, and health behaviors, the objectives of the study were to (1) overview artistic practices, interventions, and research being conducted at the intersection of the arts and health communication and (2) identify desired and observed outcomes and variables measured in these studies.

DATA SOURCE

The search strategy was developed iteratively with 2 health science librarians and conducted using 8 databases (Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts, Art and Architecture Source, CINAHL, Communication and Mass Media Complete, ERIC, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science) and hand searching. Articles included were published between 2014 and 2018.

STUDY INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION CRITERIA

Inclusion criteria include US nonclinical setting and use of the arts (broadly defined) to change health knowledge, beliefs, behaviors, or awareness. Any articles not meeting inclusion criteria were excluded.

DATA EXTRACTION

Covidence's data extraction tool exported to MS Excel.

DATA SYNTHESIS

This final set of results was analyzed and synthesized by research design, population, sample size, health issue, purpose, variables measured, and findings.

RESULTS

In all, 78 articles met inclusion criteria. Number of participants ranged from 4 to 2140 (mean = 179); 61 (78.2%) outcome studies, including 8 experimental studies; 17 (21.79%) formative research or reports. Many different health topics were addressed and different art forms used.

CONCLUSION

The arts can help build knowledge and awareness of health issues. The authors highlight the need to build an evidence base for arts and public health.
