Abstract
OBJECTIVE Absence rates remain high in UK schools, with negative implications for attainment, life chances and inequality. Reasons for non-attendance are complex but include psychosocial factors. Few UK-based studies have evaluated psychosocial interventions for school attendance outcomes or its moderators. This pre-post evaluation examined the potential influence of school-based one-to-one counselling on school attendance and possible moderators. DESIGN AND SETTING Secondary analysis of routine data, collected by a national mental health provider in primary and secondary schools. PARTICIPANTS 7405 pupils aged 4-19 years, with complete school attendance records at Time1 (pre-counselling term) and Time2 (the term when counselling ended). INTERVENTION All participants received school-based one-to-one counselling with a trained counsellor between August 2016 and December 2019. OUTCOMES Percentage of school sessions attended (continuous) and persistent absence (binary; attending ≤90% of sessions) in a term. Potential moderators included sociodemographics, mental health and school engagement/enjoyment. RESULTS Median Time1 attendance was 96%. 23.6% of participants were persistently absent. The intervention was not associated with improved percentage attendance (0.028%, 95% CI -0.160-0.216%) but was associated with 18.5% reduced odds of persistent absence (OR=0.815, 95% CI 0.729-0.911). We identified five moderators of change in attendance (interaction terms p<0.05): age group (improvements for 4-9 s; worsening for 15-19 s), improvement for some ethnicities and lower parent/carer education. Mental health and school engagement/enjoyment co-varied with attendance in expected directions. CONCLUSIONS One-to-one counselling may improve school attendance among persistently absent pupils, particularly at younger ages. Improving mental health and pupil engagement/enjoyment are potential intervention targets. Our hypotheses require confirmation with controlled designs.

Abstract
LAY ABSTRACT Autistic children and teenagers are, on average, absent from school more than their peers. The aim of this review was to provide an overview of the research on absence from school in autistic learners in primary and secondary school, to help guide future research. We sifted through 4632 reports and found 42 studies with a focus on school absence and autism. We looked at how, when, and where the studies were conducted. We also summarized the results and outlined how absence was measured in the studies. Absence from school may lead to problems later in life, like incomplete education and unemployment. It is therefore important to know how common this problem is among autistic learners, what the reasons may be, and what type of support they need. The studies were from high-income countries and were mainly published in the last 10 years. Studies based on school registers from the United States and the United Kingdom clearly showed that children and teenagers with autism had higher risk of school absence than those without autism. Absence was often linked to problems with mental health or additional neurodevelopmental conditions. Several studies also showed that absence in autistic children and adolescents was related to problems in school, like bullying or lack of knowledge about autism. Support programs were only evaluated in a few studies with a small number of study participants. We conclude that more research is needed to better understand why autistic learners are absent and what they need to thrive in school.

Abstract
School refusal is considered a risk factor for academic, social, and personal situations, such as school dropouts. Studies have been carried out on school refusal for almost 50 years. However, general research trends have not been mapped yet. This study summarizes the bibliometric analysis of scientific collaborations and prevalence across locations by country and institution, leading researchers, journals, and trends (keywords) in school refusal research. The United States, Japan, Spain, and England are the countries that stand out in terms of school refusal. It can be said that the Journal of American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Cognitive and Behavioral Practice, and Frontiers in Psychology are important journals that publish on school refusal. Researchers named Christopher A. Kearney, Carolina Gonzálvez, Jose Manuel Garcia-Fernandez, David A. Heyne, and Brigit M. Van Widenfelt have been found to have more intensive studies and collaborations on school refusal. The authors keywords common use for school refusal; are truancy, school absenteeism, adolescence, school attendance, school phobia, autism spectrum disorder, and bullying. The findings show that school refusal is a current research area, and scientific collaborations continue to be established. The findings reveal all the details of the school refusal research.

Abstract
School-based health centers (SBHCs) are associated with numerous positive aspects of student health services. Many schools in the United States (US) do not have transparent policies on chronic health condition (CHC) management. Of particular concern is the underreporting of the delivery of health services in U.S. schools concerning CHC management and its relationship with the presence or absence of a SBHC. Data from the 2020 School Health Profiles (SHP) Survey were examined in New York public secondary schools. Specific health services were reviewed, together with the presence or absence of a SBHC, including daily medication administration, stock rescue medication, case management services, community partners, chronic disease-specific education, and assurance that students with CHCs were enrolled in an insurance program. A significantly greater proportion of schools with a SBHC compared with schools without a SBHC provided: (1) daily medication administration (92.9% vs. 86.5%; p < .001), (2) stock or rescue medication (84.9% vs. 77.4%; p < .001), (3) case management services (83.1% vs. 67.2%; p < .001), (4) disease-specific education for families (63.1% vs. 57.2%; p = .022), (5) student and family connection to community health services (84.2% vs. 76.5%; p < .001), and (6) ensured that a protocol existed whereby students with a CHC were enrolled in an insurance plan if eligible (79.6% vs. 66.8%; p < .001). Findings suggest that data on a national scale include essential facts for states to consider concerning school health policies and practices. Additional research should examine the intricacy of elements connected with school-based health care to understand better the care provided to children with CHCs.

Abstract
PURPOSE School-based health centers (SBHCs) may mitigate barriers to health care access and improve students' academic outcomes, but few studies test this hypothesis. We examined whether school attendance improved after students received care at an SBHC. METHODS We conducted a secondary analysis of data from 17 SBHCs affiliated with a single large urban school district and demographic and attendance data from SBHC users (N = 14,030) and nonusers (N = 230,046) from August 2015-February 2020. We examined the percent of full school days present each month for three years before and after students' first SBHC visit and a proxy visit date for SBHC nonusers. Propensity weighted linear regression models tested whether visiting an SBHC was associated with a change in the attendance trajectory compared to a matched sample of SBHC nonusers. RESULTS Among SBHC users, attendance trajectories declined more steeply prior to their first SBHC visit than after the first visit (preslope -0.71%, postslope -0.05%), whereas SBHC nonusers had a similar attendance trajectory over the entire period (preslope -0.18%, postslope -0.17%), with difference-in-difference 0.65. Changes in trajectories were more pronounced for students with a mental health encounter. Prior to the first SBHC mental health visit, SBHC users displayed a marked decline in monthly attendance (preslope -1.02%). After the first mental health visit, attendance increased (postslope 1.44%), with difference-in-difference 2.33. DISCUSSION SBHC utilization was associated with improved school attendance over time, particularly for students with a mental health diagnosis. Investing in SBHCs may reduce school absenteeism and support student health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As school districts across the nation evaluate strategies and implement programs to reduce absenteeism, health-related interventions remain largely underutilized. This study provides the estimated cost of improving students' diet quality as a means to increase attendance. Then, it compares the costs and efficacy of improving diet quality to those of other absence-reduction interventions. METHODS This study used child-level diet quality data from the Growing Right Onto Wellness (GROW) randomized control trial merged with Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) absences data, as well as food cost estimates from Rose et al. to study the cost effectiveness of improving underserved elementary student attendance through improved diet quality. RESULTS The results suggest that improving diet quality might be a cost-efficient way of improving attendance among elementary students in underserved areas. Further, improving diet quality compares favorably to other absence-reduction strategies, in terms of cost and effectiveness. CONCLUSIONS Investments in school food programs to improve diet quality may be a cost-effective strategy to reduce student absenteeism, especially for schools with higher concentrations of students with lower diet quality. These results may assist decision-makers who allocate scarce resources aimed at improving school attendance.
