Aquatic Fate and Ecotoxicology Effect of ZnS:Mn Quantum Dots on Chlorella vulgaris in Fresh Water

With the increasing integration of nanomaterials into daily life, the potential ecotoxicological impacts of nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted increased attention from the scientific community. This study assessed the ecotoxicity of ZnS quantum dots (QDs) doped with varying molar concentrations of Mn2+ on Chlorella vulgaris. The ZnS:Mn QDs were synthesized using the polyol method. The size of the ZnS:Mn QDs ranged from approximately 1.1 nm to 2 nm, while the aggregation size in Seine River water was 341 nm at pH 6 and 8. The presence of ZnS:Mn (10%) NPs exhibited profound toxicity to Chlorella vulgaris, with immediate reductions in viability (survival cells) from 71%, 60% to 51%, 52% in BG11 and Seine River water, respectively, at a concentration of 100 mg L-1 of ZnS:Mn (10%) NPs. Additionally, the ATP content in Chlorella vulgaris significantly decreased in Seine River water (by 20%) after 3 h of exposure to ZnS:Mn (10%) NPs. Concurrently, SOD activity significantly increased in Seine River water, indicating that the ZnS:Mn (10%) NPs induced ROS production and triggered an oxidative stress response in microalgae cells.

Palladium nanoparticles as emerging pollutants from motor vehicles: An in-depth review on distribution, uptake and toxicological effects in occupational and living environment

Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) play an integral role in motor vehicles as the primary vehicle exhaust catalyst (VEC) for tackling environmental pollution. Automobiles equipped with Pd-based catalytic converters were introduced in the mid-1970s and ever since the demand for Pd has steadily increased due to stringent emission standards imposed in many developed and developing countries. However, at the same time, the increasing usage of Pd in VECs has led to the release of nano-sized Pd particles in the environment, thus, emerging as a new source of environmental pollution. The present reports in the literature have shown gradual increasing levels of Pd particles in different urban environmental compartments and internalization of Pd particles in living organisms such as plants, aquatic species and animals. Occupational workers and the general population living in urban areas and near major highways are the most vulnerable as they may be chronically exposed to PdNPs. Risk assessment studies have shown acute and chronic toxicity exerted by PdNPs in both in-vitro and in-vivo models but the underlying mechanism of PdNPs toxicity is still not fully understood. The review intends to provide readers with an in-depth account on the demand and supply of Pd, global distribution of PdNPs in various environmental matrices, their migration and uptake by living species and lastly, their health risks, so as to serve as a useful reference to facilitate further research and development for safe and sustainable technology.

Hybrid material based on subgleba of mosaic puffball mushroom (Handkea utriformis) as an adsorbent for heavy metal removal from aqueous solutions

The alkali treated subglebal tissue of the mosaic puffball (Handkea utriformis) (Sa) and Sa modified with hydroxyapatite (Sa-HAp), obtained by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, were used for the removal of Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺ from aqueous solution. The materials were characterized by FT-IR, Raman, SEM and EDS analysis and by determination of pH_PZC. The adsorption performances of Sa and Sa-HAp were assessed in batch experiments at different pH, contact times, temperatures and mass of the adsorbent. Different models of adsorption isotherms were used, and the best fit was obtained with the Langmuir model. Maximum adsorption capacities of Sa towards Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺ were 44.82, 15.54 and 17.21 mg g^-1, while for Sa-HAp were 79.55, 52.59 and 45.01 mg g^-1, respectively. Kinetic data were well fitted by a pseudo second-order model, while thermodynamic studies disclose spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process. The Sa-Hap was successfully regenerated with 1 M NaCl and after the fifth desorption cycle and 10 h achieved 82.9, 69.7 and 60.4 %, while for 0.5 M NaCl + 0.5 M NaOH and 1 h was 78.3, 64.1, 57.5 % of desorbed Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺, respectively. The competitive study and results from a column system confirmed good applicability of Sa-HAp adsorbent.

Removal of Platinum and Palladium from Wastewater by Means of Biosorption on Fungi Aspergillus sp. and Yeast Saccharomyces sp

The emission of platinum group metals from different sources has caused elevated concentrations of platinum and palladium in samples of airborne particulate matter, soil, surface waters and sewage sludge. The ability of biomass of Aspergillus sp. and yeast Saccharomyces sp. for removal of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) from environmental samples was studied in this work. The pH of the solution, the mass of biosorbent, and contact time were optimized. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms and kinetic results were used for interpretation of the process equilibrium of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) on both microorganisms. The maximal efficiency of retention of Pt(IV) on yeast and fungi was obtained at acidic solutions (pH 2.0 for Pt(IV) and pH 2.5–3.5 for Pd(II)). The equilibrium of the biosorption process was attained within 45 min. The best interpretation for the experimental data was given by the Langmuir isotherm. Kinetics of the Pt and Pd adsorption process suit well the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. Fungi Aspergillus sp. shows higher adsorption capacity for both metals than yeast Saccharomyces sp. The maximum adsorption capacity of fungi was 5.49 mg g−1 for Pt(IV) and 4.28 mg g−1 for Pd(II). The fungi possess the ability for efficient removal of studied ions from different wastewater samples (sewage and road run-off water). It was also demonstrated, that quantitative recovery of Pd from industrial wastes could be obtained by biosorption using Aspergillus sp.

Wastes generated by automotive industry – Spent automotive catalysts

Rhodium, ruthenium, palladium, and platinum are classified as platinum group metals (PGM). A demand for PGM has increased in recent years. Their natural sources are limited, therefore it is important, and both from economical and environmental point of view, to develop effective process to recover PGM from waste/secondary sources, such as spent automotive catalysts. Pyrometallurgical methods have always been used for separation of PGM from various materials. However, recently, an increasing interest in hydrometallurgical techniques for the removal of precious metals from secondary sources has been noted. Among them, liquid-liquid extraction by contacting two liquid phases: aqueous solution of metal ions and organic solution of extractant is considered an efficient technique to separate valuable metal ions from solutions after leaching from spent catalysts.

Biosorption of neodymium on Chlorella vulgaris in aqueous solution obtained from hard disk drive magnets

In recent years, biosorption is being considered as an environmental friendly technology for the recovery of rare earth metals (REE). This study investigates the optimal conditions for the biosorption of neodymium (Nd) from an aqueous solution derived from hard drive disk magnets using green microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris). The parameters considered include solution pH, temperature and biosorbent dosage. Best-fit equilibrium as well as kinetic biosorption models were also developed. At the optimal pH of 5, the maximum experimental Nd uptakes at 21, 35 and 50°C and an initial Nd concentration of 250 mg/L were 126.13, 157.40 and 77.10 mg/g, respectively. Analysis of the optimal equilibrium sorption data showed that the data fitted well (R2 = 0.98) to the Langmuir isotherm model, with maximum monolayer coverage capacity (qmax) of 188.68 mg/g, and Langmuir isotherm constant (KL) of 0.029 L/mg. The corresponding separation factor (RL) is 0.12 indicating that the equilibrium sorption was favorable. The sorption kinetics of Nd ion follows well a pseudo-second order model (R2>0.99), even at low initial concentrations. These results show that Chlorella vulgaris has greater biosorption affinity for Nd than activated carbon and other algae types such as: A. Gracilis, Sargassum sp. and A. Densus.

Study on the coordination structure of pt sorbed on bacterial cells using x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy

Biosorption has been intensively investigated as a promising technology for the recovery of precious metals from solution. However, the detailed mechanism responsible for the biosorption of Pt on a biomass is not fully understood because of a lack of spectroscopic studies. We applied X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy to elucidate the coordination structure of Pt sorbed on bacterial cells. We examined the sorption of Pt(II) and Pt(IV) species on bacterial cells of Bacillus subtilis and Shewanella putrefaciens in NaCl solutions. X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Pt-sorbed bacteria suggested that Pt(IV) was reduced to Pt(II) on the cell’s surface, even in the absence of an organic material as an exogenous electron donor. EXAFS spectra demonstrated that Pt sorbed on bacterial cells has a fourfold coordination of chlorine ions, similar to PtCl₄^2-, which indicated that sorption on the protonated amine groups of the bacterial cells. This work clearly demonstrated the coordination structure of Pt sorbed on bacterial cells. The findings of this study will contribute to the understanding of Pt biosorption on biomass, and facilitate the development of recovery methods for rare metals using biosorbent materials.

Sorption of platinum on immobilized microorganisms for its on-line preconcentration and chemiluminescent determination in water samples

Fungi of the type Aspergillus sp. were immobilized on a cellulosic resin and used as a biosorbent for the on-line preconcentration and separation of Pt(IV) ions prior to their chemiluminescent determination via flow injection analysis. Biosorption and elution conditions were optimized, and the results compared to biosorbents based on the use of Chlorella vulgaris algae and Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast in terms of preconcentration and selective retention of Pt(IV). The immobilized fungi presented here have a high potential for use in platinum biosorption. The procedure exhibits the currently lowest limit of detection (0.02 ng mL⁻¹ of Pt) and very high selectivity. The procedure was applied to the determination of Pt(IV) in river water, road run-off, and wastewater samples.

Biosorption: a new rise for elemental solid phase extraction methods

Biosorption is a term that usually describes the removal of heavy metals from an aqueous solution through their passive binding to a biomass. Bacteria, yeast, algae and fungi are microorganisms that have been immobilized and employed as sorbents in biosorption processes. The binding characteristics of microorganisms are attributed to functional groups on the surface providing some features to the biosorption process like selectivity, specificity and easy release. These characteristics turn the biosorption into an ideal process to be introduced in solid phase extraction systems for analytical approaches. This review encompasses the research carried out since 2000, focused on the employment of biosorption processes as an analytical tool to improve instrumental analysis. Since aminoacids and peptides as synthetic analogues of natural metallothioneins, proteins present in the cell wall of microorganisms, have been also immobilized on solid supports (controlled pore glass, carbon nanotubes, silica gel polyurethane foam, etc.) and introduced into solid phase extraction systems; a survey attending this issue will be developed as well in this review.

Fungal biosorption--an alternative to meet the challenges of heavy metal pollution in aqueous solutions

The removal of heavy metal from the environment, especially wastewater, is now shifting from the use of conventional methods to the use of biosorption, which may be defined as the binding and concentration of selected heavy metal ions or other molecules on to certain biological material. Although most biosorption research concerns metal and related pollutants, including radionuclides, the term is now applied for particulates and all manner of organic pollutants as well. Such pollutants can be in gaseous, soluble and insoluble forms. Biosorption is a physical process carried out through mechanisms such as ion exchange, surface complexation and precipitation. It is a property of both living and dead organisms (and their components) and has been heralded as a promising biotechnology for pollutant removal from solution. Various biomasses such as plant products (tree bark, peanut skin, sawdust, plant weeds etc.) have been tested for metal biosorption with very encouraging results. In this comprehensive review, biosorptive ability of fungal biomass toward heavy metals is emphasized. A detailed description of adsorption properties and mode of action of fungal biosorbents is offered in order to explain the heavy metal selectivity displayed by these biosorbents. The cell structure and cell wall of the fungal cell is evaluated in terms of metal sequestration. The parameters influencing the passive uptake of pollutants are analysed. The binding mechanism is discussed, including the key functional groups involved in the process. Quantification of metal-biomass interactions is fundamental to evaluation of potential implementation strategies; hence sorption isotherms and sorption kinetics, as well as models used to characterize fungal biosorbent sorption, are reviewed. Despite the continuing dramatic increase in published research on biosorption, there has been little or no exploitation in an industrial context. Thus, the current status and future directions regarding biosorption at an industrial level are discussed. A systematic comparative review of the literature, based on the metal-binding capacity of fungal biomass under different conditions, is also provided. The problems associated with fungal biosorption are analysed and suitable remedies are discussed. Thus, this article reviews the achievements and current status of fungal biosorption technology and hopes to provide insights into future research.

Surface modified bacterial biosorbent with poly(allylamine hydrochloride): Development using response surface methodology and use for recovery of hexachloroplatinate(IV) from aqueous solution

In this study, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAA/HCl) was cross-linked with fermentation bacterial waste (Escherichia coli) in order to introduce a large amount of amine groups as binding sites for potassium hexachloroplatinate(IV), as a model anionic pollutant. The sorption performance of PAA/HCl-modified E. coli was greatly affected by the dosages of PAA/HCl and crosslinker (epichlorohydrin, ECH), and by the pH of the modification reaction medium. These factors were optimized through the response surface methodology (RSM). A three-level factorial Box-Behnken design was performed, and a second-order polynomial model was successfully used to describe the effects of PAA/HCl, ECH and the pH on the Pt(IV) uptake (R(2) = 0.988). The optimal conditions that were obtained from the RSM were 0.49 g of PAA/HCl, 0.05 mL of ECH and pH 10.02, with 1.0 g of dried E. coli biomass. The biosorption isotherm and kinetics studies were carried out in order to evaluate the sorption potential of the PAA/HCl-modified E. coli that was prepared under the optimized conditions. The sorption performance of the developed bacterial biosorbent was 4.36 times greater than that of the raw E. coli. Desorption was carried out using 0.05 M acidified thiourea and the biosorbent was successfully regenerated and reused up to four cycles. Therefore, this simple and cost-effective method suggested here is a useful modification tool for the development of high performance biosorbents for the recovery of anionic precious metals.

Platinum recovery from ICP wastewater by a combined method of biosorption and incineration

A high performance biosorbent, polyethylenimine (PEI)-modified biomass, was prepared by attaching PEI onto the surface of inactive Escherichia coli biomass. Wastewater containing platinum was collected from an industrial laboratory for inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and used for the recovery study. The maximum platinum uptake of PEI-modified biomass was enhanced up to 108.8 mg/g compared to 21.4 mg/g of the raw biomass. Kinetic experiments revealed that sorption equilibrium could reach within 60 min for the PEI-modified biomass. The results of FTIR and XPS analysis of Pt-unloaded and Pt-loaded PEI-modified biomass indicated that electrostatic interaction was the main binding mechanism between the platinum ions and the binding sites on the surface of the biomass. Metallic form of platinum in ash was recovered by incineration with a recovery efficiency of over 98.7%. Furthermore, XPS, TEM and XRD results confirmed that the platinum recovered were both forms of Pt(0) and Pt(2+).

Estimation of platinum in environmental water samples with solid phase extraction technique using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

A solid phase extraction technique for the determination of platinum(IV) at trace levels by inductively coupled plasma mass spectromA solid phase extraction technique for the determination of platinum(IV) at trace levels by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed. The method was based on retention of platinum in a sample on silica gel modified with aminepropyl groups. The retention of platinum(IV) from the sample solution and the recovery of platinum with 1.0 mol L−1 thiourea solution were quantitative. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was calculated as 5% (n = 7) at the 10 ng L−1 level. The enrichment factor was found to be (50-fold) for 250 mL of water sample. Under optimum conditions, the method detection limit (MDL) was found to be 1 ng L−1 for platinum in water matrices. Recoveries of Pt from spike addition to atmospheric water samples were quantitative (80–95%). The present method was used for the determination of platinum in precipitation, throughfall and runoff water samples.

Biosorption of precious metals

Biosorption has emerged as a low-cost and often low-tech option for removal or recovery of base metals from aqueous wastes. The conditions under which precious metals such as gold, platinum and palladium are sorbed by biomass are often very different to those under which base metals are sorbed. This, coupled with the increasingly high demand for precious metals, drives the increase in research into efficient recovery of precious metal ions from all waste material, especially refining wastewaters. Common biosorbents for precious metal ions include various derivatives of chitosan, as well as other compounds with relatively high surface amine functional group content. This is generally due to the ability of the positively charged amine groups to attract anionic precious metal ions at low pH. Recent research regarding the biosorption of some precious metals is reviewed here, with emphasis on the effects of the biosorption environment and the biosorption mechanisms identified.

Trends in Sorption Preconcentration Combined with Noble Metal Determination

Nowadays much attention is being paid to the determination of trace amounts of noble metals in geological, industrial, biological and environmental samples. The most promising techniques, such as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) are characterized by high sensitivity. However, the accurate determination of trace noble metals has been limited by numerous interferences generated from the presence of matrix elements. To decrease, or eliminate, these interferences, the sorption preconcentration of noble metals is often used prior to their instrumental detection. A great number of hyphenated methods of noble metal determination using sorption preconcentration have been developed. This review describes the basic types of available sorbents, preconcentration procedures and preparations of the sorbent to the subsequent determination of noble metals. The specific features of instrumental techniques and examples of ETAAS, FAAS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS determinations after the sorption preconcentration of noble metals are considered. The references cited here were selected mostly from the period 1996 - 2006.

Microorganisms in inorganic chemical analysis

There are innumerable strains of microbes (bacteria, yeast and fungi) that degrade or transform chemicals and compounds into simpler, safer or less toxic substances. These bioprocesses have been used for centuries in the treatment of municipal wastes, in wine, cheese and bread making, and in bioleaching and metal recovery processes. Recent literature shows that microorganisms can be also used as effective sorbents for solid phase extraction procedures. This review reveals that fundamental nonanalytical studies on the parameters and conditions of biosorption processes and on metal-biomass interactions often result in efficient analytical procedures and biotechnological applications. Some selected examples illustrate the latest developments in the biosorption of metals by microbial biomass, which have opened the door to the application of microorganisms to analyte preconcentration, matrix separation and speciation analysis.
