Adsorption Characteristics for Cu(II) and Phosphate in Chitosan Beads under Single and Mixed Conditions

Chitosan, a natural organic polymer, has shown bifunctional characteristics in the removal of cationic and anionic contaminants from water and wastewater treatment. In particular, cationic Cu(II) and anionic phosphate can simultaneously interact with chitosan owing to the presence of the amino group in the form of NH₂ and NH₃⁺ in chitosan. To gain greater insight into the bifunctional adsorption characteristics of chitosan, its adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and phosphate was tested under single and mixed (co-ion) conditions to investigate the interactions between four types of chitosan beads and NH₂ and NH₃⁺. In the single condition, Cu(II) uptake was reduced from 0.243 to 0.0197 mmol/g due to the crosslinking and drying processes, whereas no significant reduction in phosphate uptake was observed, indicating that the crosslinking agent only interacted with NH₂ to decrease the number of available adsorption sites for Cu(II). Under the mixed condition, the simultaneous presence of the two ions clearly increased the uptake of each other, with the adsorption of phosphate being more influenced than that of Cu(II). The comparison of the rate constant, k₁ or k₂, using pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order models confirmed that phosphate reached equilibrium faster than Cu(II), suggesting that electrostatic interaction was preferred over coordination. In addition, under mixed conditions, co-ion competition slowed down the adsorption kinetics for both Cu(II) and phosphate.

Enhancement of Cerium Sorption onto Urea-Functionalized Magnetite Chitosan Microparticles by Sorbent Sulfonation—Application to Ore Leachate

The recovery of strategic metals such as rare earth elements (REEs) requires the development of new sorbents with high sorption capacities and selectivity. The bi-functionality of sorbents showed a remarkable capacity for the enhancement of binding properties. This work compares the sorption properties of magnetic chitosan (MC, prepared by dispersion of hydrothermally precipitated magnetite microparticles (synthesized through Fe(II)/Fe(III) precursors) into chitosan solution and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde) with those of the urea derivative (MC-UR) and its sulfonated derivative (MC-UR/S) for cerium (as an example of REEs). The sorbents were characterized by FTIR, TGA, elemental analysis, SEM-EDX, TEM, VSM, and titration. In a second step, the effect of pH (optimum at pH 5), the uptake kinetics (fitted by the pseudo-first-order rate equation), the sorption isotherms (modeled by the Langmuir equation) are investigated. The successive modifications of magnetic chitosan increases the maximum sorption capacity from 0.28 to 0.845 and 1.25 mmol Ce g−1 (MC, MC-UR, and MC-UR/S, respectively). The bi-functionalization strongly increases the selectivity of the sorbent for Ce(III) through multi-component equimolar solutions (especially at pH 4). The functionalization notably increases the stability at recycling (for at least 5 cycles), using 0.2 M HCl for the complete desorption of cerium from the loaded sorbent. The bi-functionalized sorbent was successfully tested for the recovery of cerium from pre-treated acidic leachates, recovered from low-grade cerium-bearing Egyptian ore.

Some Well-Known Alginate and Chitosan Modifications Used in Adsorption: A Review

Owing to environmental pollution and increasingly strict regulations, heavy metals have attracted the attention of many researchers in various disciplines. Alginate and chitosan derivatives have gained popularity as biosorbents for water treatment. An increase in the number of publications on modified biosorbents for the biosorption of toxic compounds reveals widespread interest in examining the requirements and positive contribution of each modification type. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of using alginate and chitosan for adsorption. Well-known modifications based on chitosan and alginate, namely, grafting, functionalization, copolymerization and cross-linking, as well as applications in the field of adsorption processes, especially amino acid functionalization, are reviewed. The selection criteria for the best biosorbents and their effectiveness and proposed mechanism of adsorption are discussed critically. In the conclusion, the question of why these adsorbents need modification before use is addressed.

Grafting of Thiazole Derivative on Chitosan Magnetite Nanoparticles for Cadmium Removal—Application for Groundwater Treatment

The synthesis and developments of magnetic chitosan nanoparticles for high efficiency removal of the cadmium ions from aquatic medium are one of the most challenging techniques. Highly adsorptive composite (MCH-ATA) was produced by the reaction of chitosan with formaldehyde and amino thiazole derivative. The sorbent was characterized by FTIR, elemental analyses (EA), SEM-EDX, TEM analysis, TGA and titration (volumetric). The modified material includes high nitrogen and sulfur contents (i.e., 4.64 and 1.35 mmol g⁻¹, respectively), compared to the pristine material (3.5 and 0 mmol g⁻¹, respectively). The sorption was investigated for the removal of Cd(II) ions from synthetic (prepared) solution before being tested towards naturally contaminated groundwater in an industrial area. The functionalized sorbent shows a high loading capacity (1.78 mmol Cd g⁻¹; 200 mg Cd g⁻¹) compared to the pristine material (0.61 mmol Cd g⁻¹; 68.57 mg Cd g⁻¹), while removal of about 98% of Cd with capacity (6.4 mg Cd g⁻¹) from polymetallic contaminated groundwater. The sorbent displays fast sorption kinetics compared to the non-modified composite (MCH); 30 min is sufficient for complete sorption for MCH-ATA, while 60–90 min for the MCH. PFORE fits sorption kinetics for both sorbents, whereas the Langmuir equation fits for MCH and Langmuir and Sips for MCH-ATA for sorption isotherms. The TEM analysis confirms the nano scale size, which limits the diffusion to intraparticle sorption properties. The 0.2 M HCl solution is a successful desorbing agent for the metal ions. The sorbent was applied for the removal of cadmium ions from the contaminated underground water and appears to be a promising process for metal decontamination and water treatment.

Photocatalytic Efficacy of Heterocyclic Base Grafted Chitosan Magnetite Nanoparticles on Sorption of Pb(II); Application on Mining Effluent

Development of bio-based sorbents (i.e., chitosan moieties) at nanoscale size for the removal of metal contaminants is the main target of this research. Grafting with thiazole heterocyclic derivative gives fast kinetics sorption, highly metal loading, and good recyclability for mining leaching solution. Different analyses tools including (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET surface area (nitrogen sorption desorption), titration, and TEM (transmission electron microscopy)) were used to investigate the chemical and textural properties of the functionalized sorbent. The sorption was measured in normal visible light and under UV emission. The highest capacity was measured at pH 5, which reached 0.251 mmol Pb g−1 in visible light compared with 0.346 mmol Pb g−1 under UV for the pristine crosslinked chitosan (MCc). The sorption performances were improved by functionalization; (0.7814 and 1.014 mmol Pb g−1) for the functionalized sorbent (MCa-ATA) under visible light and UV, respectively. PFORE (pseudo-first-order rate equation) and RIDE (resistance to intraparticle diffusion) fit kinetics, the Sips equation is the most fit profile for the sorption isotherms for the MCc in either light and UV processes, while PFORE and RIDE for kinetics under light and UV for MCa-ATA and Sips in light and Sips and Langmuir under the UV emission. Finally, the sorbent was investigated toward a raffinate solution from ore processing and shows promising extraction tools for the most interesting elements.

Neodymium Recovery by Chitosan/Iron(III) Hydroxide [ChiFer(III)] Sorbent Material: Batch and Column Systems

A low cost composite material was synthesized for neodymium recovery from dilute aqueous solutions. The in-situ production of the composite containing chitosan and iron(III) hydroxide (ChiFer(III)) was improved and the results were compared with raw chitosan particles. The sorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analyses (SEM-EDX). The equilibrium studies were performed using firstly a batch system, and secondly a continuous system. The sorption isotherms were fitted with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips models; experimental data was better described with the Langmuir equation and the maximum sorption capacity was 13.8 mg g-1 at pH 4. The introduction of iron into the biopolymer matrix increases by four times the sorption uptake of the chitosan; the individual sorption capacity of iron (into the composite) was calculated as 30.9 mg Nd/g Fe. The experimental results of the columns were fitted adequately using the Thomas model. As an approach to Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets effluents, a synthetic dilute effluent was simulated at pH 4, in order to evaluate the selectivity of the sorbent material; the overshooting of boron in the column system confirmed the higher selectivity toward neodymium ions. The elution step was carried out using MilliQ-water with the pH set to 3.5 (dilute HCl solution).

Alginate and Algal-Based Beads for the Sorption of Metal Cations: Cu(II) and Pb(II)

Alginate and algal-biomass (Laminaria digitata) beads were prepared by homogeneous Ca ionotropic gelation. In addition, glutaraldehyde-crosslinked poly (ethyleneimine) (PEI) was incorporated into algal beads. The three sorbents were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX): the sorption occurs in the whole mass of the sorbents. Sorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the impact of pH, sorption isotherms, and uptake kinetics. A special attention was paid to the effect of drying (air-drying vs. freeze-drying) on the mass transfer properties. For alginate, freeze drying is required for maintaining the porosity of the hydrogel, while for algal-based sorbents the swelling of the material minimizes the impact of the drying procedure. The maximum sorption capacities observed from experiments were 415, 296 and 218 mg Pb g(-1) and 112, 77 and 67 mg Cu g(-1) for alginate, algal and algal/PEI beads respectively. Though the sorption capacities of algal-beads decreased slightly (compared to alginate beads), the greener and cheaper one-pot synthesis of algal beads makes this sorbent more competitive for environmental applications. PEI in algal beads decreases the sorption properties in the case of the sorption of metal cations under selected experimental conditions.

Interaction of Chitosan with Metal Ions: From Environmental Applications to the Elaboration of New Materials

Chitosan is an emblematic example of biopolymer that can be obtained from renewable resources (fungal biomass, crustacean shells…) and that can be used for binding a number of metal ions through different mechanisms (complexation, electrostatic attraction, ion pair formation). Chitosan was used for the sorption of various transition metals, from toxic (Hg(II), Cd(II), U(VI), Mo(VI), V(IV) and V(V) …) to strategic and valuable metals (Pd(II), Pt(IV), Au(III) …). However, the interactions of chitosan with metal ions are not strictly limited to environmental applications. Hence, the binding of metal ions on the biopolymer can be used for designing new materials or new applications. Some examples are reported below.
