Improving the work efficiency of healthcare-associated infection surveillance using electronic medical records

In this study, we developed an integrated hospital-associated urinary tract infection (HAUTI) surveillance information system (called iHAUTISIS) based on existing electronic medical records (EMR) systems for improving the work efficiency of infection control professionals (ICPs) in a 730-bed, tertiary-care teaching hospital in Taiwan. The iHAUTISIS can automatically collect data relevant to HAUTI surveillance from the different EMR systems, and provides a visualization dashboard that helps ICPs make better surveillance plans and facilitates their surveillance work. In order to measure the system performance, we also created a generic model for comparing the ICPs' work efficiency when using existing electronic culture-based surveillance information system (eCBSIS) and iHAUTISIS, respectively. This model can demonstrate a patient's state (unsuspected, suspected, and confirmed) and corresponding time spent on surveillance tasks performed by ICPs for the patient in that state. The study results showed that the iHAUTISIS performed better than the eCBSIS in terms of ICPs' time cost. It reduced the time by 73.27 s, when using iHAUTISIS (114.26 s) and eCBSIS (187.53 s), for each patient on average. With increased adoption of EMR systems, the development of the integrated HAI surveillance information systems would be more and more cost-effective. Moreover, the iHAUTISIS adopted web-based technology that enables ICPs to online access patient's surveillance information using laptops or mobile devices. Therefore, our system can further facilitate the HAI surveillance and reduce ICPs' surveillance workloads.

Implementation science: how to jump‐start infection prevention

Implementing evidence‐based infection prevention practices is challenging. Implementation science, which is the study of methods promoting the uptake of evidence into practice, addresses the gap between theory and practice. Just as healthcare epidemiology has emerged as a paradigm for patient safety, infection prevention may serve as a clinical model for implementation researchers.

Expanding infection preventionists' influence in the 21st Century: looking back to move forward

The 5th Decennial International Conference on Healthcare-Associated Infections took place in Atlanta in March 2010. The conference was unprecedented in the variety, depth, and breath of scientific sessions and research abstracts informing the practice of health care epidemiology and infection prevention. However, noticeably absent were topics or related discussions focused on essential leadership skills and influence strategies required to implement the science into practice.

Moving evidence from the literature to the bedside: report from the APIC Research Task Force

Research is an integral component of the mission of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). In January 2010, APIC 's Board of Directors decided to update and clarify the Association's approach to research. The purpose of this paper is to briefly review the history of APIC's role in research and to report on the recent vision and direction developed by a research task force regarding appropriate roles and contributions for APIC and its members in regards to research. APIC and its membership play critical roles in the research process, especially in terms of setting the research agenda so that research resources can be directed to important areas. Additionally, dissemination and implementation are areas in which APIC members can utilize their unique talents to ensure that patients receive the most up-to-date and evidence-based infection prevention practices possible.

Enhancing patient safety by reducing healthcare-associated infections: the role of discovery and dissemination

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) take a major human toll on society and reduce public confidence in the healthcare system. The current convergence of scientific, public, and legislative interest in reducing rates of HAI can provide the necessary momentum to address and answer important questions in HAI research. This position paper outlines priorities for a national approach to HAIs: scrutinizing the science base, developing a prioritized research agenda, conducting studies that address the questions that have been identified, creating and deploying guidelines that are based on the outcomes of these studies, and then initiating new studies that assess the efficacy of the interventions.

Infection control, hospital epidemiology, and patient safety

Health care-acquired are a major risk for hospitalized children. Similar to adult patients, children are vulnerable to infections related to medical devices. Children also are at significant risk of nosocomial transmission of common pediatric viral illness, such as respiratory syncytial virus and varicella. In addition, pediatric patients have unique or incompletely developed immune system.
