Speeding up Growth: Selection for Mass-Independent Maximal Metabolic Rate Alters Growth Rates

The Role of Metabolic Phenotype in the Capacity to Balance Competing Energetic Demands

AbstractGiven the critical role of metabolism in the life history of all organisms, there is particular interest in understanding the relationship between individual metabolic phenotypes and the capacity to partition energy into competing life history traits. Such relationships could be predictive of individual phenotypic performances throughout life. Here, we were specifically interested in whether an individual fish's metabolic phenotype can shape its propensity to feed following a significant stressor (2-min exhaustive exercise challenge). Such a relationship would provide insight into previous intraspecific observations linking high metabolism with faster growth. Using a teleost fish, the barramundi (Lates calcarifer), we predicted that individuals with high standard metabolic rates (SMRs) and maximal metabolic rates (MMRs) would be faster to recover and resume feeding after exercise. Contrary to our prediction, neither SMR nor MMR was correlated with latency to feed after exercise (food was offered at 0.5, 1.5, 3, and 18 h after exercise). Only time after exercise and individual fish ID were significant predictors of latency to feed. Measurements of MMR from the same individuals (three measurements spaced 8-12 d apart) revealed a moderate degree of repeatability (R=0.319). We propose that interindividual differences in biochemical and endocrine processes may be more influential than whole-organism metabolic phenotype in mediating feeding latency after exercise.

Larger guts and faster growth in mice selected for high basal metabolic rate

Postnatal growth in birds and mammals is the time of highest vulnerability and relatively high energy demands and therefore shapes the organisms' future outcomes. Several different factors might impose limitations on growth in juveniles, one of them being the efficiency of the digestive process and size of the gastrointestinal tract. We tested the gut size-growth rate relationship using a unique experimental model-mice from a selection experiment designed to produce two lines with divergent levels of basal metabolic rate (BMR): the high BMR (H-BMR) and low BMR (L-BMR) line types. These lines differ with respect to not only BMR, but also correlated traits-internal organ size and food intake. Applying a cross-fostering design and a thermoregulatory burden imposed by shaving the mothers, we demonstrated that the mass of intestine strongly affected the growth rate, with the H-BMR pups having larger intestines and growing faster, and with reduced growth rate of pups of both lines nursed by shaved L-BMR mothers. Our study also provides a functional link between high growth rate of neonates and high BMR of adults, partly reflecting metabolic costs of maintenance of their guts.

Effects of Selection for Mass-Independent Maximal Metabolic Rate on Food Consumption

Metabolic rates potentially regulate the pace of important physiological and life-history traits. Natural selection has shaped the evolution of metabolic rates and the physiology that supports them, including digestibility and the rate of food consumption. Understanding the relationship between metabolic rates and energy internalization is central to understanding how resources are allocated among competing physiological functions. We investigated how artificial selection on mass-independent basal metabolic rate (BMR) and mass-independent aerobic maximal metabolic rate (MMR) affected food consumption and apparent digestibility in mice. Evolved changes in mass-corrected BMR-but not mass-corrected MMR-corresponded with changes in food consumption. This result is consistent with previous work showing that BMR constitutes a large portion of an animal's daily energy budget and thus that BMR might provide a better indicator of daily food requirements than MMR. In contrast, digestive efficiencies did not differ among selection treatments and did not evolve in these mice. This study provides insights into how evolution of metabolic rates may affect food consumption and overall energy use.

Ecophysiological determinants of sexual size dimorphism: integrating growth trajectories, environmental conditions, and metabolic rates

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) often results in dramatic differences in body size between females and males. Despite its ecological importance, little is known about the relationship between developmental, physiological, and energetic mechanisms underlying SSD. We take an integrative approach to understand the relationship between developmental trajectories, metabolism, and environmental conditions resulting in extreme female-biased SSD in the crab spider Mecaphesa celer (Thomisidae). We tested for sexual differences in growth trajectories, as well as in the energetics of growth, hypothesizing that female M. celer have lower metabolic rates than males or higher energy assimilation. We also hypothesized that the environment in which spiderlings develop influences the degree of SSD of a population. We tracked growth and resting metabolic rates of female and male spiderlings throughout their ontogeny and quantified the adult size of individuals raised in a combination of two diet and two temperature treatments. We show that M. celer's SSD results from differences in the shape of female and male growth trajectories. While female and male resting metabolic rates did not differ, diet, temperature, and their interaction influenced body size through an interactive effect with sex, with females being more sensitive to the environment than males. We demonstrate that the shape of the growth curve is an important but often overlooked determinant of SSD and that females may achieve larger sizes through a combination of high food ingestion and low activity levels. Our results highlight the need for new models of SSD based on ontogeny, ecology, and behavior.

Whether warming magnifies the toxicity of a pesticide is strongly dependent on the concentration and the null model

How global warming changes the toxicity of contaminants is a research priority at the intersection of global change biology and ecotoxicology. While many pesticides are more toxic at higher temperatures this is not always detected. We studied whether deviations from this general pattern can be explained by concentration-dependent interaction effects and by testing the interaction against the inappropriate null model. We exposed larvae of the mosquito Culex pipiens to three concentrations of the pesticide chlorpyrifos (absence, low and high) in the absence and presence of 4 °C warming. Both the low and high chlorpyrifos concentration were lethal and generated negative sublethal effects: activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and total fat content decreased, and oxidative damage to lipids increased, yet growth rate increased. Warming was slightly lethal, yet had positive sublethal effects: growth rate, total fat content and metabolic rate increased, and oxidative damage decreased. For four out of seven response variables the independent action model identified the expected synergistic interaction between chlorpyrifos and warming. Notably, for three variables (survival, AChE and fat content) this was strongly dependent on the chlorpyrifos concentration, and for two of these (AChE and fat content) not associated with a significant interaction in the general(ized) linear models. For survival and fat content, warming only potentiated chlorpyrifos (CPF) toxicity at the low CPF concentration, while the opposite was true for AChE. Our results highlight that taking into account concentration-dependence and appropriate null model testing is crucial to improve our understanding of the toxicity of contaminants in a warming world.
