Design study of a high-resolution breast-dedicated PET system built from cadmium zinc telluride detectors

Dedicated breast PET scanners currently have a spatial resolution in the 1.5 to 2 mm range, and the ability to provide tomographic images and quantitative data. They are also commercially available from a few vendors. A review of past and recent advances in the development and performance of dedicated breast PET scanners is summarized.

3D directional gradient L0 norm minimization guided limited-view reconstruction in a dual-panel positron emission mammography

BACKGROUND

Dual-panel PET is often used for local organ imaging, especially breast imaging, due to its simple structure, high sensitivity, good in-plane resolution, and straightforward fusion with other imaging modalities. Nevertheless, because of data loss caused by the dual-panel structure, using conventional image reconstruction methods results in limited-view artifacts and low image quality in dual-panel positron emission mammography (PEM), which may seriously affect the diagnosis. To mitigate the limited-view artifacts in the dual-panel PEM, we propose a 3D directional gradient L₀ norm minimization (3D-DL₀) guided reconstruction method.

METHODS

The detailed derivation and reasonable simplification of the 3D-DL₀ algorithm are given first. Using this algorithm, we then obtain a prior image with edge recovery but contrast loss. To limit the solution space, the 3D-DL₀ prior is introduced into the Maximum a Posteriori reconstruction. Meanwhile, a space-invariant point spread function is also implemented to restore image contrast and boundaries. Finally, the reconstructed images with limited-view artifact suppression are obtained. The proposed method was evaluated using the data acquired from physical phantoms and patients with breast tumors on a commercial dual-panel PET system.

RESULTS

The qualitative and quantitative studies for phantom data and the blind reader study for clinical data show that the proposed method is more effective in reaching a balance between artifact elimination and image contrast improvement compared with various limited-view reconstruction methods. In addition, the iteration process of the method is proved convergent numerically.

CONCLUSIONS

The image quality improvement confirms the potential value of the proposed reconstruction algorithm to address the limited-view problem, and thus improve diagnostic accuracy in dual-panel PEM imaging.

Hybrid total-body pet scanners-current status and future perspectives

Purpose Since the 1990s, PET has been successfully combined with MR or CT systems. In the past years, especially PET systems have seen a trend towards an enlarged axial field of view (FOV), up to a factor of ten. Methods Conducting a thorough literature research, we summarize the status quo of contemporary total-body (TB) PET/CT scanners and give an outlook on possible future developments. Results Currently, three human TB PET/CT systems have been developed: The PennPET Explorer, the uExplorer, and the Biograph Vision Quadra realize aFOVs between 1 and 2 m and show a tremendous increase in system sensitivity related to their longer gantries. Conclusion The increased system sensitivity paves the way for short-term, low-dose, and dynamic TB imaging as well as new examination methods in almost all areas of imaging.

Evaluating attenuation correction strategies in a dedicated, single-gantry breast PET-tomosynthesis scanner

We are developing a dedicated, combined breast positron emission tomography (PET)-tomosynthesis scanner. Both the PET and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) scanners are integrated in a single gantry to provide spatially co-registered 3D PET-tomosynthesis images. The DBT image will be used to identify the breast boundary and breast density to improve the quantitative accuracy of the PET image. This paper explores PET attenuation correction (AC) strategies that can be performed with the combined breast PET-DBT scanner to obtain more accurate, quantitative high-resolution 3D PET images. The PET detector is comprised of a 32 × 32 array of 1.5 × 1.5 × 15 mm3 LYSO crystals. The PET scanner utilizes two detector heads separated by either 9 or 11 cm, with each detector head having a 4 × 2 arrangement of PET detectors. GEANT4 Application for Tomographic Emission simulations were performed using an anthropomorphic breast phantom with heterogeneous attenuation under clinical DBT-compression. FDG-avid lesions, each 5 mm in diameter with 8:1 uptake, were simulated at four locations within the breast. Simulations were performed with a scan time of 2 min. PET AC was performed using the actual breast simulation model as well as DBT reconstructed volumetric images to derive the breast outline. In addition to using the known breast density as defined by the breast model, we also modeled it as uniform patient-independent soft-tissue, and as a uniform patient-specific material derived from breast tissue composition. Measured absolute lesion uptake was used to evaluate the quantitative accuracy of performing AC using the various strategies. This study demonstrates that AC is necessary to obtain a closer estimate of the true lesion uptake and background activity in the breast. The DBT image dataset assists in measuring lesion uptake with low bias by facilitating accurate breast delineation as well as providing accurate information related to the breast tissue composition. While both the uniform soft-tissue and patient-specific material approaches provides a close estimate to the ground truth, <5% bias can be achieved by using a uniform patient-specific material to define the attenuation map.

Recent advances in the development of high-resolution 3D cadmium-zinc-telluride drift strip detectors

In the last two decades, great efforts have been made in the development of 3D cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detectors operating at room temperature for gamma-ray spectroscopic imaging. This work presents the spectroscopic performance of new high-resolution CZT drift strip detectors, recently developed at IMEM-CNR of Parma (Italy) in collaboration with due2lab (Italy). The detectors (19.4 mm × 19.4 mm × 6 mm) are organized into collecting anode strips (pitch of 1.6 mm) and drift strips (pitch of 0.4 mm) which are negatively biased to optimize electron charge collection. The cathode is divided into strips orthogonal to the anode strips with a pitch of 2 mm. Dedicated pulse processing analysis was performed on a wide range of collected and induced charge pulse shapes using custom 32-channel digital readout electronics. Excellent room-temperature energy resolution (1.3% FWHM at 662 keV) was achieved using the detectors without any spectral corrections. Further improvements (0.8% FWHM at 662 keV) were also obtained through a novel correction technique based on the analysis of collected-induced charge pulses from anode and drift strips. These activities are in the framework of two Italian research projects on the development of spectroscopic gamma-ray imagers (10-1000 keV) for astrophysical and medical applications.

Penalized maximum-likelihood reconstruction for improving limited-angle artifacts in a dedicated head and neck PET system

Positron emission tomography (PET) suffers from limited spatial resolution in current head and neck cancer management. We are building a dual-panel high-resolution PET system to aid the detection of tumor involvement in small lymph nodes ([Formula: see text]10 mm in diameter). The system is based on cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors with cross-strip electrode readout (1 mm anode pitch and 5 mm cathode pitch). One challenge of the dual-panel system is that the limited angular coverage of the imaging volume leads to artifacts in reconstructed images, such as the elongation of lesions. In this work, we leverage a penalized maximum-likelihood (PML) reconstruction for the limited-angle PET system. The dissimilarity between the image to be reconstructed and a prior image from a low-resolution whole-body scanner is penalized. An image-based resolution model is incorporated into the regularization. Computer simulations were used to evaluate the performance of the method. Results demonstrate that the elongation of the 6-mm and 8-mm diameter hot spheres is eliminated with the regularization strength γ being 0.02 or larger. The PML reconstruction yields higher contrast recovery coefficient (CRC) of hot spheres compared to the maximum-likelihood reconstruction, as well as the low-resolution whole-body image, across all hot sphere sizes tested (3, 4, 6, and 8 mm). The method studied in this work provides a way to mitigate the limited-angle artifacts in the reconstruction from limited-angle PET data, making the high-resolution dual-panel dedicated head and neck PET system promising for head and neck cancer management.

Design study of a dedicated head and neck cancer PET system

The tumor-involved regions of head and neck cancer (HNC) have complex anatomical structures and vital physiological roles. As a consequence, there is a need for high sensitivity and high spatial resolution dedicated HNC PET scanner. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and optimize system design that includes detecting materials and geometries. For the detecting material, two scanners with the same two-panel geometry based on CZT and LYSO were evaluated. For the system geometry, four CZT scanners with two-panel, lengthened two-panel, four-panel, and full-ring geometries were evaluated. A cylinder phantom with sphere lesions and an XCAT phantom in the head and neck region were simulated. The results showed that the sensitivity of the 40-mm thickness CZT system and the 20-mm thickness LYSO system were comparable. However, the multiple interaction photon events recovery accuracy of the CZT system was about 20% higher. The in-panel and orthogonal-panel spatial resolutions of CZT are 0.58 and 0.74 mm, while those of LYSO are 0.70 and 1.40 mm. For system geometry, the four-panel and full-ring scanners have a higher contrast recovery coefficient (CRC) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) than the two-panel and lengthened two-panel scanners. However, a 5-mm lesion in the XCAT phantom was visualized within 6 min in the two-panel system.

Partial-ring PET image restoration using a deep learning based method

PET scanners with partial-ring geometry have been proposed for various imaging purposes. The incomplete projection data obtained from this design cause undesirable artifacts in the reconstructed images. In this study, we investigated the performance of a deep learning (DL) based method for the recovery of partial-ring PET images. Twenty digital brain phantoms were used in the Monte Carlo simulation toolkit, SimSET, to simulate 15 min full-ring PET scans. Partial-ring PET data were generated from full-ring PET data by removing coincidence events that hit these specific detector blocks. A convolutional neural network based on the residual U-Net architecture was trained to predict full-ring data from partial-ring data in either the projection or image domain. The performance of the proposed DL-based method was evaluated by comparing with the PET images reconstructed using the full-ring projection data in terms of the mean squared error (MSE), structural similarity (SSIM) index and recovery coefficient (RC). The MSE results showed the superiority of the image-domain approach in reduction of 91.7% in contrast to 14.3% for the projection-domain approach. Therefore, the image-domain approach was used to study the influence of the number of detector block removal. The SSIM results were 0.998, 0.996 and 0.993 for 3, 5 and 7 detector block removals, respectively. The activity of gray and white matters could be fully recovered even with 7 detector block removal, while the RCs of two artificially inserted small lesions (3 pixels in diameter) in the testing data were 94%, 89% and 79% for 3, 5, and 7 detector block removals, respectively. Our simulation results suggest that DL has the potential to recover partial-ring PET images.

Sensors for Positron Emission Tomography Applications

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is an essential tool in clinical applications for the diagnosis of diseases due to its ability to acquire functional images to help differentiate between metabolic and biological activities at the molecular level. One key limiting factor in the development of efficient and accurate PET systems is the sensor technology in the PET detector. There are generally four types of sensor technologies employed: photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), avalanche photodiodes (APDs), silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), and cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors. PMTs were widely used for PET applications in the early days due to their excellent performance metrics of high gain, low noise, and fast timing. However, the fragility and bulkiness of the PMT glass tubes, high operating voltage, and sensitivity to magnetic fields ultimately limit this technology for future cost-effective and multi-modal systems. As a result, solid-state photodetectors like the APD, SiPM, and CZT detectors, and their applications for PET systems, have attracted lots of research interest, especially owing to the continual advancements in the semiconductor fabrication process. In this review, we study and discuss the operating principles, key performance parameters, and PET applications for each type of sensor technology with an emphasis on SiPM and CZT detectors—the two most promising types of sensors for future PET systems. We also present the sensor technologies used in commercially available state-of-the-art PET systems. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of these four types of sensors are compared and the research challenges of SiPM and CZT detectors are discussed and summarized.

Dedicated Breast Gamma Camera Imaging and Breast PET: Current Status and Future Directions

Recent advances in nuclear medicine instrumentation have led to the emergence of improved molecular imaging techniques to image breast cancer: dedicated gamma cameras using γ-emitting ^99mTc-sestamibi and breast-specific PET cameras using ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose. This article focuses on the current role of such approaches in the clinical setting including diagnosis, assessing local extent of disease, monitoring response to therapy, and, for gamma camera imaging, possible supplemental screening in women with dense breasts. Barriers to clinical adoption and technologies and radiotracers under development are also discussed.

Simulation study of quantitative precision of the PET/X dedicated breast PET scanner

The goal for positron emission tomography (PET)/X is measuring changes in radiotracer uptake for early assessment of response to breast cancer therapy. Upper bounds for detecting such changes were investigated using simulation and two image reconstruction algorithms customized to the PET/X rectangular geometry. Analytical reconstruction was used to study spatial resolution, comparing results with the distance of the closest approach (DCA) resolution surrogate that is independent of the reconstruction method. An iterative reconstruction algorithm was used to characterize contrast recovery in small targets. Resolution averaged [Formula: see text] full width at half maximum when using depth-of-interaction (DOI) information. Without DOI, resolution ranged from [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text] for scanner crystal thickness between 5 and 15 mm. The DCA resolution surrogate was highly correlated to image-based FWHM. Receiver-operating characteristic analysis showed specificity and sensitivity over 95% for detecting contrast change from 5:1 to 4:1 (area under curve [Formula: see text]). For PET/X parameters modeled here, the ability to measure contrast changes benefited from higher photon absorption efficiency of thicker crystals while being largely unaffected by degraded resolution obtained with thicker crystals; DOI provided marginal improvements. These results assumed perfect data corrections and other idealizations, and thus represent an upper bound for detecting changes in small lesion radiotracer uptake of clinical interest using the PET/X system.

Optimizing timing performance of CdTe detectors for PET

Despite several attractive properties, the poor timing performance of compound semiconductor detectors such as CdTe and CdZnTe has hindered their use in commercial PET imaging systems. The standard method of pulse timing with such detectors is to employ a constant-fraction discriminator at the output of a timing filter which is fed by the pulses from a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The method has led to a time resolution of about 10 ns at full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) with 1 mm thick CdTe detectors. This paper presents a detailed investigation on the parameters limiting the timing performance of Ohmic contact planar CdTe detectors with the standard pulse timing method. The jitter and time-walk errors are studied through simulation and experimental measurements and it is revealed that the best timing results obtained with the standard timing method suffer from a significant loss of coincidence events (~50%). In order to improve the performance of the detectors with full detection efficiency, a new digital pulse timing method based on a simple pattern recognition technique was developed. A time resolution of 3.29  ±  0.10 ns (FWHM) in the energy range of 300-650 keV was achieved with an Ohmic contact planar CdTe detector (5  ×  5  ×  1 mm³). The digital pulse processing method was also used to correct for the charge-trapping effect and an improvement in the energy resolution from 4.83  ±  0.66% to 2.780  ±  0.002% (FWHM) at 511 keV was achieved. Further improvement of time resolution through a moderate cooling of the detector and the application of the method to other detector structures are also discussed.

Depth of interaction determination in monolithic scintillator with double side SiPM readout

Background

Monolithic scintillators read out by arrays of photodetectors represent a promising solution to obtain high spatial resolution and the depth of interaction (DOI) of the annihilation photon. We have recently investigated a detector geometry composed of a monolithic scintillator readout on two sides by silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays, and we have proposed two parameters for the DOI determination: the difference in the number of triggered SiPMs on the two sides of the detector and the difference in the maximum collected signal on a single SiPM on each side. This work is focused on the DOI calibration and on the determination of the capability of our detector. For the DOI calibration, we studied a method which can be implemented also in detectors mounted in a full PET scanner. We used a PET detector module composed of a monolithic 20 × 20 × 10 mm³ LYSO scintillator crystal coupled on two opposite faces to two arrays of SiPMs. On each side, the scintillator was coupled to 6 × 6 SiPMs. In this paper, the two parameters previously proposed for the DOI determination were calibrated with two different methods. The first used a lateral scan of the detector with a collimated 511 keV pencil beam at steps of 0.5 mm to study the detector DOI capability, while the second used the background radiation of the ¹⁷⁶Lu in the scintillator. The DOI determination capability was tested on different regions of the detector using each parameter and the combination of the two.

Results

With both parameters for the DOI determination, in the lateral scan, the bias between the mean reconstructed DOI and the real beam position was lower than 0.3 mm, and the DOI distribution had a standard deviation of about 1.5 mm. When using the calibration with the radioactivity of the LYSO, the mean bias increased of about 0.2 mm but with no degradation of the standard deviation of the DOI distribution.

Conclusions

The two parameters allow to achieve a DOI resolution comparable with the state of the art, giving a continuous information about the three-dimensional interaction position of the scintillation. These results were obtained by using simple estimators and a detector scalable to a whole PET system. The DOI calibration obtained using lutetium natural radioactivity gives results comparable to the other standard method but appears more readily applicable to detectors mounted in a full PET scanner.

Positron Emission Tomography: Current Challenges and Opportunities for Technological Advances in Clinical and Preclinical Imaging Systems

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is based on detecting two time-coincident high-energy photons from the emission of a positron-emitting radioisotope. The physics of the emission, and the detection of the coincident photons, give PET imaging unique capabilities for both very high sensitivity and accurate estimation of the in vivo concentration of the radiotracer. PET imaging has been widely adopted as an important clinical modality for oncological, cardiovascular, and neurological applications. PET imaging has also become an important tool in preclinical studies, particularly for investigating murine models of disease and other small-animal models. However, there are several challenges to using PET imaging systems. These include the fundamental trade-offs between resolution and noise, the quantitative accuracy of the measurements, and integration with X-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In this article, we review how researchers and industry are addressing these challenges.

Evaluation of a high resolution silicon PET insert module

Conventional PET systems can be augmented with additional detectors placed in close proximity of the region of interest. We developed a high resolution PET insert module to evaluate the added benefit of such a combination. The insert module consists of two back-to-back 1 mm thick silicon sensors, each segmented into 1040 1 mm2 pads arranged in a 40 by 26 array. A set of 16 VATAGP7.1 ASICs and a custom assembled data acquisition board were used to read out the signal from the insert module. Data were acquired in slice (2D) geometry with a Jaszczak phantom (rod diameters of 1.2-4.8 mm) filled with 18F-FDG and the images were reconstructed with ML-EM method. Both data with full and limited angular coverage from the insert module were considered and three types of coincidence events were combined. The ratio of high-resolution data that substantially improves quality of the reconstructed image for the region near the surface of the insert module was estimated to be about 4%. Results from our previous studies suggest that such ratio could be achieved at a moderate technological expense by using an equivalent of two insert modules (an effective sensor thickness of 4 mm).

Development of a prototype PET scanner with depth-of-interaction measurement using solid-state photomultiplier arrays and parallel readout electronics

In this study, we developed a prototype animal PET by applying several novel technologies to use solid-state photomultiplier (SSPM) arrays to measure the depth of interaction (DOI) and improve imaging performance. Each PET detector has an 8 × 8 array of about 1.9 × 1.9 × 30.0 mm(3) lutetium-yttrium-oxyorthosilicate scintillators, with each end optically connected to an SSPM array (16 channels in a 4 × 4 matrix) through a light guide to enable continuous DOI measurement. Each SSPM has an active area of about 3 × 3 mm(2), and its output is read by a custom-developed application-specific integrated circuit to directly convert analogue signals to digital timing pulses that encode the interaction information. These pulses are transferred to and are decoded by a field-programmable gate array-based time-to-digital convertor for coincident event selection and data acquisition. The independent readout of each SSPM and the parallel signal process can significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio and enable the use of flexible algorithms for different data processes. The prototype PET consists of two rotating detector panels on a portable gantry with four detectors in each panel to provide 16 mm axial and variable transaxial field-of-view (FOV) sizes. List-mode ordered subset expectation maximization image reconstruction was implemented. The measured mean energy, coincidence timing and DOI resolution for a crystal were about 17.6%, 2.8 ns and 5.6 mm, respectively. The measured transaxial resolutions at the center of the FOV were 2.0 mm and 2.3 mm for images reconstructed with and without DOI, respectively. In addition, the resolutions across the FOV with DOI were substantially better than those without DOI. The quality of PET images of both a hot-rod phantom and mouse acquired with DOI was much higher than that of images obtained without DOI. This study demonstrates that SSPM arrays and advanced readout/processing electronics can be used to develop a practical DOI-measureable PET scanner.

Nuclear imaging of the breast: translating achievements in instrumentation into clinical use

Approaches to imaging the breast with nuclear medicine and∕or molecular imaging methods have been under investigation since the late 1980s when a technique called scintimammography was first introduced. This review charts the progress of nuclear imaging of the breast over the last 20 years, covering the development of newer techniques such as breast specific gamma imaging, molecular breast imaging, and positron emission mammography. Key issues critical to the adoption of these technologies in the clinical environment are discussed, including the current status of clinical studies, the efforts at reducing the radiation dose from procedures associated with these technologies, and the relevant radiopharmaceuticals that are available or under development. The necessary steps required to move these technologies from bench to bedside are also discussed.

Effects of Detector Thickness on Geometric Sensitivity and Event Positioning Errors in the Rectangular PET/X Scanner

We used simulations to investigate the relationship between sensitivity and spatial resolution as a function of crystal thickness in a rectangular PET scanner intended for quantitative assessment of breast cancers. The system had two 20 × 15-cm² and two 10 × 15-cm² flat detectors forming a box, with the larger detectors separated by 4 or 8 cm. Depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution was modeled as a function of crystal thickness based on prior measurements. Spatial resolution was evaluated independent of image reconstruction by deriving and validating a surrogate metric from list-mode data (d_FWHM). When increasing crystal thickness from 5 to 40 mm, and without using DOI information, the d_FWHM for a centered point source increased from 0.72 to 1.6 mm. Including DOI information improved d_FWHM by 12% and 27% for 5- and 40-mm-thick crystals, respectively. For a point source in the corner of the FOV, use of DOI information improved d_FWHM by 20% (5-mm crystal) and 44% (40-mm crystal). Sensitivity was 7.7% for 10-mm-thick crystals (8-cm object). Increasing crystal thickness on the smaller side detectors from 10 to 20 mm (keeping 10-mm crystals on the larger detectors) boosted sensitivity by 24% (relative) and degraded d_FWHM by only ~3%/8% with/without DOI information. The benefits of measuring DOI must be evaluated in terms of the intended clinical task of assessing tracer uptake in small lesions. Increasing crystal thickness on the smaller side detectors provides substantial sensitivity increase with minimal accompanying loss in resolution.

Conceptual design and simulation study of an ROI-focused panel-PET scanner

Positron emission tomography (PET) is an important imaging modality for clincial use. Conventionally, the PET scanner is generally built to provide a roomy enough transverse field-of-view (FOV) for imaging most adults’ torsos. However, in many cases, the region-of-interest (ROI) for imaging is usually a small area inside the human body. Therefore, to fulfill a PET system which provides an FOV comparable in size to the target ROI seems appealing and more cost effective. Meanwhile, such a PET system has the potential for portable or bedside application with the reduced system size. In this work, we have investigated the feasibility of using dual-headed panel-detectors to build an ROI-focused PET scanner. A novel windowed list-mode ordered subset expectation maximization method was developed to perform the ROI image reconstruction. With this method, the ROI of the object can be reconstructed from the coincidences whose position determined by time-of-flight (TOF) measurements was inside the ROI. Monte Carlo simulation demonstrates the feasibility of detecting lesions not less than 1 cm in diameter, with a 300 ps full width at half maximum timing resolution. As a critical system performance, the impact of TOF information on image quality has been studied and the required TOF capability was assessed. With enhanced timing resolution, the distortions and artifacts were reduced effectively. The further improved TOF capability also shows a noticeable improvement of detection performance for low uptake lesions, as well as the recovery speed of lesion contrast, which is of practical significance in the lesion detection task.

A maximum NEC criterion for Compton collimation to accurately identify true coincidences in PET

In this work, we propose a new method to increase the accuracy of identifying true coincidence events for positron emission tomography (PET). This approach requires 3-D detectors with the ability to position each photon interaction in multi-interaction photon events. When multiple interactions occur in the detector, the incident direction of the photon can be estimated using the Compton scatter kinematics (Compton Collimation). If the difference between the estimated incident direction of the photon relative to a second, coincident photon lies within a certain angular range around colinearity, the line of response between the two photons is identified as a true coincidence and used for image reconstruction. We present an algorithm for choosing the incident photon direction window threshold that maximizes the noise equivalent counts of the PET system. For simulated data, the direction window removed 56%-67% of random coincidences while retaining > 94% of true coincidences from image reconstruction as well as accurately extracted 70% of true coincidences from multiple coincidences.

Scintillation induced response in passively-quenched Si-based single photon counting avalanche diode arrays

An optical electrical model which studies the response of Si-based single photon counting arrays, specifically silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), to scintillation light has been developed and validated with analytically derived and experimental data. The scintillator-photodetector response in terms of relative pulse height, 10%-90% rise/decay times to light stimuli of different rise times (ranging from 0.1 to 5 ns) and decay times (ranging from 1 to 50 ns), as well as for different decay times of the photodetector are compared in theory and simulation. A measured detector response is used as a reference to further validate the model and the results show a mean deviation of simulated over measured values of 1%.

Optical mammography: Diffuse optical imaging of breast cancer

Existing imaging modalities for breast cancer screening, diagnosis and therapy monitoring, namely X-ray mammography and magnetic resonance imaging, have been proven to have limitations. Diffuse optical imaging is a set of non-invasive imaging modalities that use near-infrared light, which can be an alternative, if not replacement, to those existing modalities. This review covers the background knowledge, recent clinical outcome, and future outlook of this newly emerging medical imaging modality.
