Abstract
This paper presents a one-step photochemical method for the preparation of CdS/Poly(MMA-co-MAA) composite photocatalyst, based on the concept of simultaneous photocatalytic polymerization of organic monomers during UV-light induced formation of CdS. The preparation is carried out in an aqueous solution of Na2S2O3, CdSO4, methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methacrylic acid (MAA), under a UV lamp. The continuously formed CdS particles with photocatalytic activity act the role of initiator to directly initiate the copolymerization of MMA and MAA, resulting in the in situ formation of the composite and full contact of the CdS particles with the oxygen-containing groups in the polymer. Taking the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue as a case study, the composite exhibited significantly higher activity under simulated solar light compared to the pure CdS. By analysis on various data, the enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the enhanced visible light absorption, and especially the high electron-hole separation efficiency caused by the electrostatic interaction between photogenerated holes and carbonyl oxygen atoms with negatively charged features. Furthermore, the composite displays excellent sunlight activity and recyclability, suggesting its potential for practical applications. Such a one-step construction strategy relying only on photo-energy is green, low-cost and promising in obtaining high-performance semiconductor/polymer composite photocatalysts.

Abstract
Single-photon sources (SPSs) play a crucial role in quantum photonics, and colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as promising and cost-effective candidates for such applications due to their high-purity single-photon emission at room temperature. This review focuses on various aspects of CQDs as SPSs. Firstly, a brief overview of the fundamental optical properties of CQDs is provided, including emission wavelength engineering and fluorescence intermittency, and their single-photon emission properties. Subsequently, this review delves into research concerning CQDs as SPSs, covering topics such as the coupling of single CQDs to microcavities, both in weak and strong coupling regimes. Additionally, methods for localizing and positioning CQDs are explored, which are critical for on-chip SPSs devices.

Abstract
We report a facile and low temperature synthesis of Ga- and In-doped CdS nanoparticles from molecular precursors. Diethyldithiocarbamate complexes of Cd(II), Ga(III), and In(III), were synthesised and decomposed in tandem through solventless thermolysis, producing Ga- or In-doped CdS. The resultant MxCd1-xS1+0.5x (where M = Ga/In at x values of 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 and 0.1) particulate powder was analysed by powder X-ray diffraction, which showed that both Ga (through all doping levels) and In (at doping levels <8 mol%) were successfully incorporated into the hexagonal CdS lattice without any impurities. Raman spectroscopy also showed no significant change from CdS. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to investigate the morphology and elemental dispersion through the doped CdS materials, showing homogenous incorporation of dopant. The optical and luminescent properties of the doped MxCd1-xS1+0.5x materials were examined by UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies respectively. All materials were found to exhibit excitonic emission, corresponding to band gap energies between 2.7 and 2.9 eV and surface defect induced emission which is more prominent for Ga than for In doping. Additionally, moderate doping slows down charge carrier recombination by increasing the lifetimes of excitonic and surface state emissions, but particularly for the latter process.

An in-depth analysis of nucleation and growth mechanism of CdS thin film synthesized by chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique. Sci Rep 2022; 12:15295. Abstract
The aim of this study is to acquire a deeper understanding of the response mechanism that is associated with the formation of CdS thin films. We presented an effective and new hybrid sensitisation technique, which involved the 1-step linker between the related chemical bath deposition (CBD) process and the traditional doping method during CBD for synthesising high-quality, CdS thin films. The mechanism for the combined synthesis of the films is also describes. CdS films were electrostatically bonded to soda-lime glass, causing the formation of the intermediate complexes [Cd(NH3)4]2+, which aided in the collision of these complexes with a soda-lime glass slide. In the one-step fabrication technique, 3-Mercaptopropionic Acid (MPA) was employed as a second source of sulphur ions and a linker molecule. Optical studies showed that the bandgap ranged between (2.26–2.52) eV. CdS + MPA films exhibited a uniform distribution of spherical molecules based on their morphological properties. After annealing, this approach significantly altered the electrical characteristics of CdS films. The CdS + MPA films displayed the highest carrier concentration whereas the CdS + Ag + MPA films exhibited the lowest resistivity, with a jump of 3 orders of magnitude.

Abstract
Herein, a general procedure for the synthesis of multifunctional MRs, which simultaneously exhibit i) chiral, ii) magnetic, and iii) fluorescent properties in combination with iv) self-propulsion, is reported. Self-propelled Ni@Pt superparamagnetic microrockets have been functionalized with fluorescent CdS quantum dots carrying a chiral host biomolecule as β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The "on-the-fly" chiral recognition potential of MRs has been interrogated by taking advantage of the β-CD affinity to supramolecularly accommodate different chiral biomolecules (i.e., amino acids). As a proof-of-concept, tryptophan enantiomers have been discriminated with a dual-mode (optical and electrochemical) readout. This approach paves the way to devise intelligent cargo micromachines with "built-in" chiral supramolecular recognition capabilities to elucidate the concept of "enantiorecognition-on-the-fly", which might be facilely customized by tailoring the supramolecular host-guest encapsulation.

Abstract
Comparative photoelectrochemical studies of cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles with either hydrophilic or hydrophobic surface properties are presented. Oleylamine organic shells provided CdS nanoparticles with hydrophobic behavior, affecting the photoelectrochemical properties of such nanostructured semiconductor. Hydrophilic CdS nanoparticles were drop-cast on the electrode, whereas the hydrophobic ones were transferred in a controlled manner with Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The substantial hindrance of photopotential and photocurrent was observed for L-B CdS films as compared to the hydrophilic, uncoated nanoparticles that were drop-cast directly on the electrode surface. The electron lifetime in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanocrystalline CdS was determined, revealing longer carrier lifetime for oleylamine coated CdS nanoparticles, ascribed to the trapping of charge at the interface of the organic shell/CdS nanoparticle and to the dominant influence of the resistance of the organic shell against the flux of charges. The “on” transients of the photocurrent responses, observed only for the oleylamine-coated nanoparticles, were resolved, yielding the potential-dependent rate constants of the redox processes occurring at the interface.

Abstract
In this work, CdS quantum dots (QDs)-sensitized self-doped Bi2MoO6 has been synthesized using glucose as reducing agent by hydrothermal method, followed by in situ deposition of the QDs. The synthesized catalyst has been employed to reduce toxic Cr(VI) and degrade phenol from the aqueous solution. The structural, optical, and electrochemical characterizations are performed using X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflection, photoluminescence (PL), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The optical properties were precisely investigated by calculating the Urbach energy, PL, and photoluminescence excitation spectra. The orderly distribution of QDs is confirmed from the correlation between full width at half-maximum of PL spectra, Urbach energy, and TEM analysis. The versatile photocatalytic activity has been tested toward Cr(VI) reduction and degradation of phenol. 3% CdS QDs-sensitized self-doped Bi2MoO6 showed highest activity, i.e., 97 and 47.5% toward reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of phenol under solar light. The reduction of Cr(VI) by the catalyst is supported by the kinetics and determination of the pHPZC value. In addition to this, the photostability and reusability test showed that the catalyst can be reused up to five cycles without diminishing its activity.

Abstract
Nature has evolved several unique biomineralization strategies to direct the synthesis and growth of inorganic materials. These natural systems are complex, involving the interaction of multiple biomolecules to catalyze biomineralization and template growth. Herein we describe the first report to our knowledge of a single enzyme capable of both catalyzing mineralization in otherwise unreactive solution and of templating nanocrystal growth. A recombinant putative cystathionine γ-lyase (smCSE) mineralizes CdS from an aqueous cadmium acetate solution via reactive H2S generation from l-cysteine and controls nanocrystal growth within the quantum confined size range. The role of enzymatic nanocrystal templating is demonstrated by substituting reactive Na2S as the sulfur source. Whereas bulk CdS is formed in the absence of the enzyme or other capping agents, nanocrystal formation is observed when smCSE is present to control the growth. This dual-function, single-enzyme, aerobic, and aqueous route to functional material synthesis demonstrates the powerful potential of engineered functional material biomineralization.

Abstract
The dispersion of light-absorbing inorganic nanomaterials in transparent plastics such as poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (PEVA) is of enormous current interest in emerging solar materials, including photovoltaic (PV) modules and commercial greenhouse films. Nanocrystalline semiconductor or quantum dots (QDs) have the potential to absorb UV light and selectively emit visible light, which can control plant growth in greenhouses or enhance PV panel efficiencies. This work provides a new and simple approach for loading mesoporous silica-encapsulated QDs into PEVA. Highly luminescent CdS and CdS-ZnS core-shell QDs with 5 nm size were synthesized using a modified facile approach based on pyrolysis of the single-molecule precursors and capping the CdS QDs with a thin layer of ZnS. To make both the bare and core-shell structure QDs more resistant against photochemical reactions, a mesoporous silica layer was grown on the QDs through a reverse microemulsion technique based on hydrophobic interactions. By careful experimental tuning, this encapsulation technique enhanced the quantum yield (∼65%) and photostability compared to the bare QDs. Both the encapsulated bare and core-shell QDs were then melt-mixed with EVA pellets using a mini twin-screw extruder and pressed into thin films with controlled thickness. The results demonstrated for the first time that mesoporous silica not only enhanced the quantum yield and photostability of the QDs but also improved the compatibility and dispersibility of QDs throughout the PEVA films. The novel light selective films show high visible light transmission (∼90%) and decreased UV transmission (∼75%).

Abstract
Quantum dots (Q-dots) of cadmium sulfide (CdS) with three different capping ligands, 1-butanethiol (BT), 2-mercaptoethanol (ME) and benzyl mercaptan (BM) have been investigated. An external electric field of variable strength of 0.2–1.0 MV cm−1 was applied to the sample of capped CdS Q-dots doped in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films. Field-induced changes in optical absorption of capped CdS Q-dots were observed in terms of purely the second-derivative of the absorption spectrum (the Stark shift), indicating an enhancement in electric dipole moment following transition to the first exciton state. The enhancement depends on the shape and size of the Q-dots prepared using different capping ligands. Field induced-change in photoluminescence (PL) reveals similar changes, an enhancement in charge-transfer (CT) character in exciton state. PL of capped CdS Q-dots is significantly quenched in presence of external electric field. The strong field-induced quenching occurs as a result of the increased charge separation resulting exciton dissociation. Thus, understanding the CT character and field-induced PL quenching of CdS Q-dots is important for photovoltaic, LEDs and biological applications.

Abstract
In this work, we present the temperature-dependence and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) of CdS nanoparticles capped independently with three different ligands thiophenol, thioglycerol, and l-cysteine over a broad temperature range from 10 to 300 K. The respective nanoparticles sizes in the three systems studied in this work are 1.5, 4, and 2 nm as determined from X-ray diffraction (XRD). From the analysis of AFM images, it was found that the lateral particle sizes of capped CdS nanoparticles are greater than those deduced from XRD or optical absorption measurements. The aim of this study is the investigation of the impact of the organic ligands on the radiative recombination dynamics in organically capped CdS nanoparticles. From the PL study and based on the temperature-dependence and time-resolved emission spectroscopy, we conclude that the emission of CdS QDs film originates from recombination of the delocalized carriers in the internal core states with a small contribution of the localized carriers at the interface. The PL decay reveals a biexponential behavior for the entire three samples at all temperatures. One of the two exponential components decays rapidly with a time τ1 in the range 0.5-0.8 ns, whereas the other decays much more slowly, with a time τ2 in the range 1-3 ns. The weak activation energy (32-37 meV) deduced from the temperature dependence of the PL intensity suggests the involvement of shallow traps. The analysis of the experimental results reveals a relatively narrow size distribution, an efficient surface passivation, and a satisfactory thermal stability of CdS nanocrystals.

Abstract
MoS2 is a two-dimensional material that is gaining prominence due to its unique electronic and chemical properties. Here, we demonstrate ligand conjugation of chemically exfoliated MoS2 using thiol chemistry. With this method, we modulate the ζ-potential and colloidal stability of MoS2 sheets through ligand designs, thus enabling its usage as a selective artificial protein receptor for β-galactosidase. The facile thiol functionalization route opens the door for surface modifications of solution processable MoS2 sheets.

Abstract
Water-dispersible CdS quantum dots (QDs) emitting from 510 to 650 nm were synthesized in a simple one-pot noninjection hydrothermal route using cadmium chloride, thiourea, and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as starting materials. All these chemicals were loaded at room temperature in a Teflon sealed tube and the reaction mixture heated at 100 °C. The effects of CdCl(2)/thiourea/MPA feed molar ratios, pH, and concentrations of precursors affecting the growth of the CdS QDs, was monitored via the temporal evolution of the optical properties of the CdS nanocrystals. High concentration of precursors and high MPA/Cd feed molar ratios were found to lead to an increase in the diameter of the resulting CdS nanocrystals and of the trap state emission of the dots. The combination of moderate pH value, low concentration of precursors and slow growth rate plays the crucial role in the good optical properties of the obtained CdS nanocrystals. The highest photoluminescence achieved for CdS@MPA QDs of average size 3.5 nm was 20%. As prepared colloids show rather narrow particle size distribution, although all reactants were mixed at room temperature. CdS@MPA QDs were characterized by UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry and MALDI TOF mass spectrometry. This noninjection one-pot approach features easy handling and large-scale production with excellent synthetic reproducibility. Surface passivation of CdS@MPA cores by a wider bandgap material, ZnS, led to enhanced luminescence intensity. CdS@MPA and CdS/ZnS@MPA QDs exhibit high photochemical stability and hold a good potential to be applied in optoelectronic devices and biological applications.

Abstract
Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are nanometre-scale crystals, which have unique photophysical properties, such as size-dependent optical properties, high fluorescence quantum yields, and excellent stability against photobleaching. These properties enable QDs as the promising optical labels for the biological applications, such as multiplexed analysis of immunocomplexes or DNA hybridization processes, cell sorting and tracing, in vivo imaging and diagnostics in biomedicine. Meanwhile, QDs can be used as labels for the electrochemical detection of DNA or proteins. This article reviews the synthesis and toxicity of QDs and their optical and electrochemical bioanalytical applications. Especially the application of QDs in biomedicine such as delivering, cell targeting and imaging for cancer research, and in vivo photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer are briefly discussed.

Abstract
A facile approach for the preparation of a novel hybrid material containing graphene and an inorganic semiconducting material, cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs), is demonstrated for the first time. First, amino-functionalized CdS QDs were prepared by modifications of the kinetic trapping method. Then, pristine graphite was oxidized and exfoliated to obtain graphene oxide nanosheets (GONS), which were then acylated with thionyl chloride to introduce acyl chloride groups on their surface. Subsequently, immobilization of the CdS QDs on the GONS surface was achieved through an amidation reaction between the amino groups located on the CdS QDs surface and the acyl chloride groups bound to the GONS surface. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H-NMR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy were employed to investigate the changes in the surface functionalities, while high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FE-SEM) were used to study the morphologies and distribution of the CdS QDs on the GONS surface. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was employed to characterize the weight loss of the samples on heating. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements were used to study the optical properties of the prepared CdS QDs and the CdS-graphene hybrid material.

Abstract
Oligosaccharides play crucial roles in many biorecognition processes by the so-called "cluster glycosidic effect". We here report a facile synthesis of lactose-CdSeS/ZnS quantum dot conjugate (Lac-QDs) by use of 1-thiol-beta-D-lactose via ligand exchange, which exhibits significantly high affinity and specificity to leukocytes in contrast to the monovalent lactose. Structural analyses indicate that there are about 132 lactosyl molecules assembled on single QDs and the hydrodynamic diameter is small, close to 8.2 nm. Further, Lac-QDs display good fluorescence and physicochemical stability in physiological conditions, as well as extremely low cytotoxicity. These properties facilitate the use of Lac-QDs in fluorescent labeling of live leukocytes.

Abstract
ZnO nanowire (NWs) arrays coated with CdS quantum dots (QDs) were successfully fabricated with a chemical bath deposition process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) have been utilized to characterize the samples. We have studied the processes of separation and recombination of the photo-generated charges in the visible region by surface photovoltage (SPV) and transient photovoltage (TPV) measurements. By controlling the amount of attached CdS QDs we found that the surface photovoltage characteristics change significantly. With a liquid electrolyte as the hole transport medium, the quantum dot sensitized nanowire solar cells (QDSSCs) exhibited short-circuit currents ranging from 0.8 to 2.6 mA cm(-2) and open-circuit voltages of 0.35-0.44 V when illuminated with light intensity 100 mW cm(-2). The relation between the performance of QDSSCs and their photovoltage characterization was also discussed.
