Diameter- and current-density-dependent growth orientation of hexagonal CdSe nanowire arrays via electrodeposition

Review on Quasi One-Dimensional CdSe Nanomaterials: Synthesis and Application in Photodetectors

During the past 15 years, quasi one-dimensional (1D) Cadmium Selenide (CdSe) nanomaterials have been widely investigated for high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices, due to the unique geometrical and physical properties. In this review, recent advancements on diverse synthesis methods of 1D CdSe nanomaterials and the application in photodetectors have been illustrated in detail. First, several bottom-up synthesis methods of 1D CdSe nanomaterials have been introduced, including the vapor-liquid-solid method, the solution-liquid-solid method, and electrochemical deposition, etc. Second, the discussion on photodetectors based on 1D CdSe nanomaterials has been divided into three parts, including photodiodes, photoconductors, and phototransistors. Besides, some new mechanisms (such as enhancement effect of localized surface plasmon, optical quenching effect of photoconductivity, and piezo-phototronic effect), which can be utilized to enhance the performance of photodetectors, have also been elaborated. Finally, some major challenges and opportunities towards the practical integration and application of 1D CdSe nanomaterials in photodetectors have been discussed, which need to be further investigated in the future.

Controllably Manipulating Three-Dimensional Hybrid Nanostructures for Bulk Nanocomposites with Large Energy Products

Hybrid nanostructures that comprise two or more nanoscale functional components are fascinating for applications in electronics, energy conversion devices, and biotechnologies. Their performances are strongly dependent on the characteristics of the individual components including the size, morphology, orientation, and distribution. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously control these structural properties in a three-dimensional (3D) hybrid nanostructure. Here, we introduce a robust strategy for concurrently manipulating these characteristics in a bulk SmCo/Fe(Co) nanocomposite. This method can tune nanocrystals in size (down to sub-10 nm), morphology (sphere, rod, or disc), and crystallographic orientation (isotropic or anisotropic). We have therefore achieved the desired nanostructures: oriented hard magnetic SmCo grains and homogeneously distributed soft magnetic Fe(Co) grains with high fractions (∼26 wt %) and small sizes (∼12.5 nm). The resulting anisotropic nanocomposite exhibits an energy product that is approximately 50% greater than that of its corresponding pure SmCo magnet and 35% higher than the reported largest value in isotropic SmCo/Fe(Co) systems. Our findings pave a new way to manipulating 3D hybrid nanostructures in a controllable manner.

Core-Shell CdS-Cu₂S Nanorod Array Solar Cells

As an earth-abundant p-type semiconductor, copper sulfide (Cu2S) is an attractive material for application in photovoltaic devices. However, it suffers from a minority carrier diffusion length that is less than the length required for complete light absorption. Core-shell nanowires and nanorods have the potential to alleviate this difficulty because they decouple the length scales of light absorption and charge collection. To achieve this geometry using Cu2S, cation exchange was applied to an array of CdS nanorods to produce well-defined CdS-Cu2S core-shell nanorods. Previous work has demonstrated single-nanowire photovoltaic devices from this material system, but in this work, the cation exchange chemistry has been applied to nanorod arrays to produce ensemble-level devices with microscale sizes. The core-shell nanorod array devices show power conversion efficiencies of up to 3.8%. In addition, these devices are stable when measured in air after nearly one month of storage in a desiccator. These results are a first step in the development of large-area nanostructured Cu2S-based photovoltaics that can be processed from solution.
