Advanced 1D heterostructures based on nanotube templates and molecules

Recent advancements in materials science have shed light on the potential of exploring hierarchical assemblies of molecules on surfaces, driven by both fundamental and applicative challenges. This field encompasses diverse areas including molecular storage, drug delivery, catalysis, and nanoscale chemical reactions. In this context, the utilization of nanotube templates (NTs) has emerged as promising platforms for achieving advanced one-dimensional (1D) molecular assemblies. NTs offer cylindrical, crystalline structures with high aspect ratios, capable of hosting molecules both externally and internally (Mol@NT). Furthermore, NTs possess a wide array of available diameters, providing tunability for tailored assembly. This review underscores recent breakthroughs in the field of Mol@NT. The first part focuses on the diverse panorama of structural properties in Mol@NT synthesized in the last decade. The advances in understanding encapsulation, adsorption, and ordering mechanisms are detailed. In a second part, the review highlights the physical interactions and photophysics properties of Mol@NT obtained by the confinement of molecules and nanotubes in the van der Waals distance regime. The last part of the review describes potential applicative fields of these 1D heterostructures, providing specific examples in photovoltaics, luminescent materials, and bio-imaging. A conclusion gathers current challenges and perspectives of the field to foster discussion in related communities.

Ultra-Mild Fabrication of Highly Concentrated SWCNT Dispersion Using Spontaneous Charging in Solvated Electron System

The efficient dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) has been the subject of extensive research over the past decade. Despite these efforts, achieving individually dispersed SWCNTs at high concentrations remains challenging. In this study, we address the limitations associated with conventional methods, such as defect formation, excessive surfactant use, and the use of corrosive solvents. Our novel dispersion method utilizes the spontaneous charging of SWCNTs in a solvated electron system created by dissolving potassium in hexamethyl phosphoramide (HMPA). The resulting charged SWCNTs (c-SWCNTs) can be directly dispersed in the charging medium using only magnetic stirring, leading to defect-free c-SWCNT dispersions with high concentrations of up to 20 mg/mL. The successful dispersion of individual c-SWCNT strands is confirmed by their liquid-crystalline behavior. Importantly, the dispersion medium for c-SWCNTs exhibits no reactivity with metals, polymers, or other organic solvents. This versatility enables a wide range of applications, including electrically conductive free-standing films produced via conventional blade coating, wet-spun fibers, membrane electrodes, thermal composites, and core-shell hybrid microparticles.

Reinforcement of Aminopropyl-Terminated Siloxane-Treated Carbon Nanotubes in Epoxy Thermosets: Mechanical and Thermal Properties

The synthesis and characterization of aminopropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane- treated carbon nanotube (AFCNT)-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites are reported in the current study. The amine functionalization of the CNTs was performed with a reaction to PDMS-NH2. The AFCNTs were homogeneously dispersed in epoxy resin by using an emulsifier and a three-roller mill. The AFCNTs were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The curing behavior of the epoxy/AFCNT was studied using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The tensile and impact strengths of the 2.0 wt.% AFCNT-reinforced epoxy nanocomposite were enhanced by 43.2% and 370%, respectively. Moreover, the glass transition temperature (Tg) was also enhanced by 21 °C. Furthermore, significant enhancements were observed in the initial degradation and char yield values. SEM results confirmed that the AFCNTs were highly dispersed in the polymeric matrix.

Elastomer Nanocomposites: Effect of Filler-Matrix and Filler-Filler Interactions

The reinforcement of elastomers is essential in the rubber industry in order to obtain the properties required for commercial applications. The addition of active fillers in an elastomer usually leads to an improvement in the mechanical properties such as the elastic modulus and the rupture properties. Filled rubbers are also characterized by two specific behaviors related to energy dissipation known as the Payne and the Mullins effects. The Payne effect is related to non-linear viscoelastic behavior of the storage modulus while the Mullins or stress-softening effect is characterized by a lowering in the stress when the vulcanizate is extended a second time. Both effects are shown to strongly depend on the interfacial adhesion and filler dispersion. The basic mechanisms of reinforcement are first discussed in the case of conventional rubber composites filled with carbon black or silica usually present in the host matrix in the form of aggregates and agglomerates. The use of nanoscale fillers with isotropic or anisotropic morphologies is expected to yield much more improvement than that imparted by micron-scale fillers owing to the very large polymer-filler interface. This work reports some results obtained with three types of nanoparticles that can reinforce rubbery matrices: spherical, rod-shaped and layered fillers. Each type of particle is shown to impart to the host medium a specific reinforcement on account of its own structure and geometry. The novelty of this work is to emphasize the particular mechanical behavior of some systems filled with nanospherical particles such as in situ silica-filled poly(dimethylsiloxane) networks that display a strong polymer-filler interface and whose mechanical response is typical of double network elastomers. Additionally, the potential of carbon dots as a reinforcing filler for elastomeric materials is highlighted. Different results are reported on the reinforcement imparted by carbon nanotubes and graphenic materials that is far below their expected capability despite the development of various techniques intended to reduce particle aggregation and improve interfacial bonding with the host matrix.

A Microwave-Assisted, Solvent-Free Approach for the Versatile Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes

While the functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has attracted extensive interest for a wide range of applications, a facial and versatile strategy remains in demand. Here, we report a microwave-assisted, solvent-free approach to directly functionalize CNTs both in raw form and in arbitrary macroscopic assemblies. Rapid microwave irradiation was applied to generate active sites on the CNTs while not inducing excessive damage to the graphitic network, and a gas-phase deposition afforded controllable grafting for thorough or regioselective functionalization. Using methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a model functional group and a CNT sponge as a model assembly, homogeneous grafting was exhibited by the increased robust hydrophobicity (contact angle increase from 30 to 140°) and improved structural stability (compressive modulus increased by 135%). Therefore, when our MMA-functionalized CNTs served as a solar absorber for saline distillation, high operating stability with a superior water evaporation rate of ∼2.6 kg m^-2 h^-1 was observed. Finally, to highlight the efficacy and versatility of this functionalization approach, we fabricated asymmetrically hydrophobic CNT sponges by regioselective functionalization to serve as a moisture-driven generator, which demonstrated a stable open-circuit voltage of 0.6 mV. This versatile, solvent-free approach can complement conventional solution-based techniques in the design and fabrication of multifunctional nanocarbon-based materials.

Nanotube-Based 1D Heterostructures Coupled by van der Waals Forces

1D van der Waals heterostructures based on carbon nanotube templates are raising a lot of excitement due to the possibility of creating new optical and electronic properties, by either confining molecules inside their hollow core or by adding layers on the outside of the nanotube. In contrast to their 2D analogs, where the number of layers, atomic type and relative orientation of the constituting layers are the main parameters defining physical properties, 1D heterostructures provide an additional degree of freedom, i.e., their specific diameter and chiral structure, for engineering their characteristics. The current state-of-the-art in synthesizing 1D heterostructures are discussed here, in particular focusing on their resulting optical properties, and details the vast parameter space that can be used to design heterostructures with custom-built properties that can be integrated into a large variety of applications. First, the effects of van der Waals coupling on the properties of the simplest and best-studied 1D heterostructure, namely a double-walled carbon nanotube, are described, and then heterostructures built from the inside and the outside are considered, which all use a nanotube as a template, and, finally, an outlook is provided for the future of this research field.

Functionalized Carbon Nanotube and MnO2 Nanoflower Hybrid as an Electrode Material for Supercapacitor Application

Functionalized carbon nanotube (FCNT) and Manganese Oxide (MnO₂) nanoflower hybrid material was synthesized using hydrothermal technique as a promising electrode material for supercapacitor applications. The morphological investigation revealed the formation of ‘nanoflower’ like structure of MnO₂ connected with FCNT, thus paving an easy path for the conduction of electrons during the electrochemical mechanism. A significant improvement in capacitance properties was observed in the hybrid material, in which carbon nanotube acts as a conducting cylindrical path, while the major role of MnO₂ was to store the charge, acting as an electrolyte reservoir leading to an overall improved electrochemical performance. The full cell electrochemical analysis of FCNT-MnO₂ hybrid using 3 M potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte indicated a specific capacitance of 359.53 F g⁻¹, specific energy of 49.93 Wh kg⁻¹ and maximum specific power of 898.84 W kg⁻¹ at 5 mV s⁻¹. The results show promise for the future of supercapacitor development based on hybrid electrode materials, where high specific energy can be achieved along with high specific power and long cycle life.

Tuning the Solubility Parameters of Carbon Nanotubes by Means of Their Adducts with Janus Pyrrole Compounds

The solubility parameters of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was tuned via their chemical modification with pyrrole compounds (PyCs), by means of a simple and sustainable methodology. PyCs were synthesized with high atom efficiency through the Paal–Knorr reaction of primary amines with 2,5-hexanedione, in the absence of solvents and catalysts. Methylamine, 1-dodecylamine, 2-amino-1,3-propanediol, and 3-(triethoxysilyl)propan-1-amine were selected. PyCs are characterized by two moieties, the pyrrole ring and the substituent of the nitrogen atom, and can be considered as Janus molecules. The functionalization of CNTs occurred with a high yield by simply heating CNTs and PyC. The whole reaction pathway did not produce any waste and was characterized by a carbon efficiency up to almost 100%. Thanks to the variety of PyC chemical structures, the CNT solubility parameter was modified in a pretty broad range of values, in the expected direction. Stable CNT dispersions were prepared in different solvents. From the aqueous dispersion, coating layers were prepared with high electrical conductivity, larger with respect to a top commercial product. The “pyrrole methodology” reported here is based on one reaction and allows almost infinite variations of the CNT solubility parameter, thus promoting their compatibility with target matrices and allowing the preparation of nanocomposite materials with improved properties. This work thus paves the way for a highly efficient exploitation of CNTs.

Control of pH-Responsiveness in Graphene Oxide Grafted with Poly-DEAEMA via Tailored Functionalization

Polymer-grafted nanomaterials based on carbon allotropes and their derivatives (graphene oxide (GO), etc.) are typically prepared by successive reaction stages that depend upon the initial functionalities in the nanostructure and the polymerization type needed for grafting. However, due to the multiple variables involved in the functionalization steps, it is commonly difficult to predict the properties in the final product and to correlate the material history with its final performance. In this work, we explored the steps needed to graft the carboxylic acid moieties in GO (COOH@GO) with a pH-sensitive polymer, poly[2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (poly[DEAEMA]), varying the reactant ratios at each stage prior to polymerization. We studied the combinatorial relationship between these variables and the behavior of the novel grafted material GO-g-poly[DEAEMA], in terms of swelling ratio vs. pH (%Q) in solid specimens and potentiometric response vs. Log[H⁺] in a solid-state sensor format. We first introduced N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS)-ester moieties at the –COOH groups (GO-g-NHS) by a classical activation with N-ethyl-N′-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC). Then, we substituted the NHS-ester groups by polymerizable amide-linked acrylic moieties using 2-aminoethyl methacrylate (AEMA) at different ratios to finally introduce the polymer chains via radical polymerization in an excess of DEAEMA monomer. We found correlated trends in swelling pH range, interval of maximum and minimum swelling values, response in potentiometry and potentiometric linear range vs. Log[H⁺] and could establish their relationship with the combinatorial stoichiometries in synthetic stages.

Extrusion of Polymer Nanocomposites with Graphene and Graphene Derivative Nanofillers: An Overview of Recent Developments

This review is focused on the recent developments of nanocomposite materials that combine a thermoplastic matrix with different forms of graphene or graphene oxide nanofillers. In all cases, the manufacturing method of the composite materials has been melt-processing, in particular, twin-screw extrusion, which can then be followed by injection molding. The advantages of this processing route with respect to other alternative methods will be highlighted. The results point to an increasing interest in biodegradable matrices such as polylactic acid (PLA) and graphene oxide or reduced graphene oxide, rather than graphene. The reasons for this will also be discussed.

Graphenic Materials for Biomedical Applications

Graphene-based nanomaterials have been intensively studied for their properties, modifications, and application potential. Biomedical applications are one of the main directions of research in this field. This review summarizes the research results which were obtained in the last two years (2017-2019), especially those related to drug/gene/protein delivery systems and materials with antimicrobial properties. Due to the large number of studies in the area of carbon nanomaterials, attention here is focused only on 2D structures, i.e. graphene, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide.

Carbon nanotubes: An effective platform for biomedical electronics

Cylindrical fullerenes (or carbon nanotubes (CNTs)) have been extensively investigated as potential sensor platforms due to effective and practical manipulation of their physical and chemical properties by functionalization/doping with chemical groups suitable for novel nanocarrier systems. CNTs play a significant role in biomedical applications due to rapid development of synthetic methods, structural integration, surface area-controlled heteroatom doping, and electrical conductivity. This review article comprehensively summarized recent trends in biomedical science and technologies utilizing a promising nanomaterial of CNTs in disease diagnosis and therapeutics, based on their biocompatibility and significance in drug delivery, implants, and bio imaging. Biocompatibility of CNTs is essential for designing effective and practical electronic applications in the biomedical field particularly due to their growing potential in the delivery of anticancer agents. Furthermore, functionalized CNTs have been shown to exhibit advanced electrochemical properties, responsible for functioning of numerous oxidase and dehydrogenase based amperometric biosensors. Finally, faster signal transduction by CNTs allows charge transfer between underlying electrode and redox centres of biomolecules (enzymes).

Antibacterial activity of chitosan nano-composites and carbon nanotubes: A review

Bacteriological contamination of water sources is a major challenge that has a detrimental impact on both the environment and human health. This imposes the search for the most efficient disinfectant. Despite their antibacterial efficiency, traditional methods can often form disinfection byproducts through their reaction with organic and inorganic compounds. Substitutes for conventional bacterial inactivation methods should not produce harmful byproducts and must also be cost effective. Nanotechnology is an attractive option that is suited for surface reactions as nanostructures offer large surface to volume ratios. Technologies using chitosan-modified nanocomposites and carbon nanotubes have proven to offer promising alternatives for bacterial inactivation. To enhance their antibacterial efficiency, such technologies have been modified chemically and physically and have as well been associated with other treatment techniques. However, despite their high bacterial disinfection efficacy and lack of treatment byproducts, the vagueness in bacterial inactivation mechanisms and complexity in materials preparation have often obscured their wide scale application. The aim of this manuscript is to review the recent advances in bacterial disinfection using nanomaterials, in the form of chitosan and carbon nanotubes. The rapid rate of research and the notable progress in this area dictate the frequent compilation and dissemination of recent introductions to this field. Existing gaps in the literature are thus also highlighted and reported discrepancies are pinpointed so that roadmaps for future studies may be figured.

Initial Studies Directed toward the Rational Design of Aqueous Graphene Dispersants

This study presents preliminary experimental data suggesting that sodium 4-(pyrene-1-yl)butane-1-sulfonate (PBSA), 5, an analogue of sodium pyrene-1-sulfonate (PSA), 1, enhances the stability of aqueous reduced graphene oxide (RGO) graphene dispersions. We find that RGO and exfoliated graphene dispersions prepared in the presence of 5 are approximately double the concentration of those made with commercially available PSA, 1. Quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics simulations provide key insights into the behavior of these molecules on the graphene surface. The seemingly obvious introduction of a polar sulfonate head group linked via an appropriate alkyl spacer to the aromatic core results in both more efficient binding of 5 to the graphene surface and more efficient solvation of the polar head group by bulk solvent (water). Overall, this improves the stabilization of the graphene flakes by disfavoring dissociation of the stabilizer from the graphene surface and inhibiting reaggregation by electrostatic and steric repulsion. These insights are currently the subject of further investigations in an attempt to develop a rational approach to the design of more effective dispersing agents for rGO and graphene in aqueous solution.

Dipole-switch induced modification of the emissive response of carbon nanotubes

The interaction of carbon nanotubes with the molecular dipole switch spiropyran is expected to affect the optical response of the tubes. Until now, the need of anchor groups to immobilize the switches on the tubes has hindered the experimental observation of the effects of switching on the emission behavior of the tubes. Here we present spiropyran-carbon nanotube complexes obtained by micelle swelling. This method does not require any anchor nor sophisticated chemistry to warrant close tube-switch proximity. For the first time, we observe the shifts predicted theoretically and their effect on the tubes' excitation and emission energies.
