Sticking of atomic hydrogen on graphene

Quantum and classical molecular dynamics for H atom scattering from graphene

This work presents systematic comparisons between classical molecular dynamics (cMD) and quantum dynamics (QD) simulations of 15-dimensional and 75-dimensional models in their description of H atom scattering from graphene. We use an experimentally validated full-dimensional neural network potential energy surface of a hydrogen atom interacting with a large cell of graphene containing 24 carbon atoms. For quantum dynamics simulations, we apply Monte Carlo canonical polyadic decomposition to transform the original potential energy surface (PES) into a sum of products form and use the multi-layer multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree method to simulate the quantum scattering of a hydrogen or deuterium atom with an initial kinetic energy of 1.96 or 0.96 eV and an incident angle of 0°, i.e., perpendicular to the graphene surface. The cMD and QD initial conditions have been carefully chosen in order to be as close as possible. Our results show little differences between cMD and QD simulations when the incident energy of the H atom is equal to 1.96 eV. However, a large difference in sticking probability is observed when the incident energy of the H atom is equal to 0.96 eV, indicating the predominance of quantum effects. To the best of our knowledge, our work provides the first benchmark of quantum against classical simulations for a system of this size with a realistic PES. Additionally, new projectors are implemented in the Heidelberg multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree package for the calculation of the atom scattering energy transfer distribution as a function of outgoing angles.

One-Dimensional Moiré Physics and Chemistry in Heterostrained Bilayer Graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has emerged as a promising platform for exploring exotic electronic phases. However, the formation of moiré patterns in tBLG has thus far been confined to the introduction of twist angles between the layers. Here, we propose heterostrained bilayer graphene (hBLG), as an alternative avenue for accessing twist angle-free moiré physics via lattice mismatch. Using atomistic and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the uniaxial heterostrain can promote isolated flat electronic bands around the Fermi level. Furthermore, the heterostrain-induced out-of-plane lattice relaxation may lead to a spatially modulated reactivity of the surface layer, paving the way for moiré-driven chemistry and magnetism. We anticipate that our findings can be readily generalized to other layered materials.

Generation of Sub-nanosecond H Atom Pulses for Scattering from Single-Crystal Epitaxial Graphene

Pulsed molecular beams allow high-density gas samples to be cooled to low internal temperatures and to produce narrow speed distributions. They are particularly useful in combination with pulsed-laser-based detection schemes and have also been used as pump pulses in pump–probe experiments with neutral matter. The mechanical response of pulsed valves and chopper wheels limits the duration of these pulses typically to about 10–100 μs. Bunch compression photolysis has been proposed as a means to produce atomic pulses shorter than 1 ns—an experimental capability that would allow new measurements to be made on chemical systems. This technique employs a spatially chirped femtosecond duration photolysis pulse that produced an ensemble of H atom photoproducts that rebunches into a short pulse downstream. To date, this technique could not produce strong enough beams to allow new experiments to be carried out. In this paper, we report production of pulsed H atom beams consistent with a 700 ps pulse duration and with sufficient intensity to carry out differentially resolved inelastic H scattering experiments from a graphene surface. We observe surprisingly narrow angular distributions for H atoms incident normal to the surface. At low incidence energies quasi-elastic scattering dominates, and at high incidence energy we observe a strongly inelastic scattering channel. These results provide the basis for future experiments where the H atoms synchronously collide with a pulsed-laser-excited surface.

Hydrogen Atoms on Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons: Chemistry and Magnetism Meet at the Edge

Although the unconventional π-magnetism at the zigzag edges of graphene holds promise for a wide array of applications, whether and to what degree it plays a role in their chemistry remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the addition of a hydrogen atom─the simplest yet the most experimentally relevant adsorbate─to zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). We show that the π-magnetism governs the chemistry of ZGNRs, giving rise to a site-dependent reactivity of the carbon atoms and driving the hydrogenation process to the nanoribbon edges. Conversely, the chemisorbed hydrogen atom governs the π-magnetism of ZGNRs, acting as a spin-1/2 paramagnetic center in the otherwise antiferromagnetic ground state and spin-polarizing the charge carriers at the band extrema. Our findings establish a comprehensive picture of the peculiar interplay between chemistry and magnetism that emerges at the zigzag edges of graphene.

Edge Disorder in Bottom-Up Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons: Implications for Magnetism and Quantum Electronic Transport

We unveil the nature of the structural disorder in bottom-up zigzag graphene nanoribbons along with its effect on the magnetism and electronic transport on the basis of scanning probe microscopies and first-principles calculations. We find that edge-missing m-xylene units emerging during the cyclodehydrogenation step of the on-surface synthesis are the most common point defects. These "bite" defects act as spin-1 paramagnetic centers, severely disrupt the conductance spectrum around the band extrema, and give rise to spin-polarized charge transport. We further show that the electronic conductance across graphene nanoribbons is more sensitive to "bite" defects forming at the zigzag edges than at the armchair ones. Our work establishes a comprehensive understanding of the low-energy electronic properties of disordered bottom-up graphene nanoribbons.

From Behavior of Water on Hydrophobic Graphene Surfaces to Ultra-Confinement of Water in Carbon Nanotubes

In recent years and with the achievement of nanotechnologies, the development of experiments based on carbon nanotubes has allowed to increase the ionic permeability and/or selectivity in nanodevices. However, this new technology opens the way to many questionable observations, to which theoretical work can answer using several approximations. One of them concerns the appearance of a negative charge on the carbon surface, when the latter is apparently neutral. Using first-principles density functional theory combined with molecular dynamics, we develop here several simulations on different systems in order to understand the reactivity of the carbon surface in low or ultra-high confinement. According to our calculations, there is high affinity of the carbon atom to the hydrogen ion in every situation, and to a lesser extent for the hydroxyl ion. The latter can only occur when the first hydrogen attack has been achieved. As a consequence, the functionalization of the carbon surface in the presence of an aqueous medium is activated by its protonation, then allowing the reactivity of the anion.

Dual-Route Hydrogenation of the Graphene/Ni Interface

Nanostructured architectures based on graphene/metal interfaces might be efficiently exploited in hydrogen storage due to the attractive capability to provide adsorption sites both at the top side of graphene and at the metal substrate after intercalation. We combined in situ high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy with theoretical calculations to determine the arrangement of hydrogen atoms at the graphene/Ni(111) interface at room temperature. Our results show that at low coverage H atoms predominantly adsorb as monomers and that chemisorption saturates when ∼25% of the surface is hydrogenated. In parallel, with a much lower rate, H atoms intercalate below graphene and bind to Ni surface sites. Intercalation progressively destabilizes the C-H bonds and triggers the release of the hydrogen chemisorbed on graphene. Valence band and near-edge absorption spectroscopy demonstrate that the graphene layer is fully lifted when the Ni surface is saturated with H. Thermal programmed desorption was used to determine the stability of the hydrogenated interface. Whereas the H atoms chemisorbed on graphene remain unperturbed over a wide temperature range, the intercalated phase abruptly desorbs 50-100 K above room temperature.
