Quasi-harmonic thermoelasticity of palladium, platinum, copper, and gold from first principles

Ab initio quasi-harmonic thermoelasticity of molybdenum at high temperature and pressure

We present the ab initio thermoelastic properties of body-centered cubic molybdenum under extreme conditions obtained within the quasi-harmonic approximation including both the vibrational and electronic thermal excitation contributions to the free energy. The quasi-harmonic temperature-dependent elastic constants are calculated and compared with existing experiments and with the quasi-static approximation. We find that the quasi-harmonic approximation allows for a much better interpretation of the experimental data, confirming the trend found previously in other metals. Using the Voigt-Reuss-Hill average, we predict the compressional and shear sound velocities of polycrystalline molybdenum as a function of pressure for several temperatures, which might be accessible in experiments.

Pressure and temperature dependentab-initioquasi-harmonic thermoelastic properties of tungsten

We present theab-initiotemperature and pressure dependent thermoelastic properties of body-centered cubic tungsten. The temperature dependent quasi-harmonic elastic constants (ECs) are computed at several reference volumes including both the phonon and the electronic excitations contribution to the free energy and interpolated at different temperatures and pressures. Good agreement with the experimental ECs on a single crystal at ambient pressure is found. The pressure and temperature dependence of the shear sound velocity measured on polycrystalline tungsten by Qiet alis also in agreement with theory. Some discrepancies are found instead for the compressional velocity at high temperature and this is attributed to the temperature derivative of the bulk modulus, higher in theory than in experiment. These conclusions are reached both by PBE and by PBEsol functionals. The two give elastic properties with a similar pressure and temperature dependence although the latter is closer to experiment at 0 K.

Investigating Electronic, Optical, Thermodynamic, and Thermoelectric Properties of SrO and SrO2 Phases: A Density Functional Theory Approach

The significance of strontium oxide (SrO) and strontium peroxide (SrO2) is currently being investigated as one of the countless potential uses for green energy. However, few studies have examined the distinctive properties of several phases of SrO and SrO2. In order to fill this research gap, we have conducted a study on their various properties through "density functional theory (DFT)" under ideal conditions. This includes the study of electronic, optical, thermodynamic, and thermoelectric properties of the above-mentioned materials. For this study, the "Quantum Espresso" tool in DFT using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof-generalized-gradient approximation (PBE-GGA) as the exchange-correlation functional and "Optimized Norm-Conserving Vanderbilt (ONCV)" as the pseudopotential has been used. The face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), hexagonal-1, and hexagonal-2 phases of SrO and the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases of SrO2 have been selected for the aforesaid study, for which some structural information has already been available. During this study, the energy band gap as an electronic property; the dielectric constant, refractive index, absorption coefficient, reflectivity, and energy loss function as optical properties; entropy, heat capacity, Debye temperature, and Debye sound velocity as thermodynamic properties; and the Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and figure of merit as thermoelectric properties have been investigated. In addition, phonon dispersion curves and formation energies have been used to confirm the dynamical stability and thermodynamic stability, respectively, for all of the materials mentioned above. The curve showed that the FCC, hexagonal-1, and hexagonal-2 phases of "SrO" are dynamically stable. These materials have good optoelectronic properties and can be used in ultraviolet sensors due to their intermediate band gap and highest material response in the ultraviolet range. In terms of thermoelectric property, the maximum value of "figure of merit" for the above material has been achieved up to 0.5. Satisfactory agreement has been found between the current findings and the known theoretical and experimental findings.

First-principles investigation of the electronics, optical, mechanical, thermodynamics and thermoelectric properties of Na based Quaternary Heusler alloys (QHAs) NaHfXGe (X = Co, Rh, Ir)

In this study, we explored the electronic and thermoelectric (TE) properties of the Na-based Quaternary Heusler Alloys (QHAs) NaHfXGe (X = Co, Rh, Ir) using density functional theory (DFT). We performed the spin-polarized DFT calculations at the general gradient approximation (GGA) level and confirmed the ground state non-magnetic configuration of NaHfXGe. The mechanical and thermodynamical stabilities are analyzed and discussed to validate the stability by calculating the elastic constant and phonon dispersion curve. A thorough investigation on the electronic properties are carried out by performing the GGA, GGA+U, and GGA+SOC formalism where we report the semi-conducting characteristic of NaHfCoGe and NaHfRhGe QHAs. However, NaHfIrGe is predicted to be a non-magnetic metal. From the calculated optical properties we found that the most active optical absorption occurs within the vis-UV region withα>105 cm-1, therefore the studied QHAs are proposed to be a promising optoelectronic materials. The results of the thermodynamic properties have shown that NaHfXGe follows Debye's low-temperature specific heat law and the classical thermodynamics of the Dulong-Petit law at high temperatures. The calculated TE efficiency using GGA+SOC formalism atT= 1200 K are ZT∼1.22 and 0.57 for NaHfCoGe and NaHfRhGe, suggesting that these materials are potential TE materials to operate at high temperature.

Finite-temperature atomic relaxations: Effect on the temperature-dependent C44 elastic constants of Si and BAs

The effect of atomic relaxations on the temperature-dependent elastic constants (TDECs) is usually taken into account at zero temperature by the minimization of the total energy at each strain. In this paper, we investigate the order of magnitude of this approximation on a paradigmatic example: the C₄₄ elastic constant of diamond and zincblende materials. We estimate the effect of finite-temperature atomic relaxations within the quasi-harmonic approximation by computing ab initio the internal strain tensor from the second derivatives of the Helmholtz free-energy with respect to strain and atomic displacements. We apply our approach to Si and BAs and find a visible difference between the softening of the TDECs computed with the zero-temperature and finite-temperature atomic relaxations. In Si, the softening of C₄₄ passes from 8.6% to 4.5%, between T = 0 K and T = 1200 K. In BAs, it passes from 8% to 7%, in the same range of temperatures. Finally, from the computed elastic constant corrections, we derive the temperature-dependent Kleinman parameter, which is usually measured in experiments.
