High-performance Cu nanoparticles/three-dimensional graphene/Ni foam hybrid for catalytic and sensing applications

Silver decorated lithium niobat nanostructure by UV activation method for silver-lithium niobate/silicon heterojunction device

Lithium niobite (LiNbO₃) nanostructure were successfully synthesized by chemical bath deposition method (CBD) and then decorated with silver nitrate (AgNO₃) through UV activation method at different immersion durations (5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 s). The silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) effects on the optical and structural properties were studied and analyzed using various scientific devices and technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that all the samples have a hexagonal structure with a maximum diffraction peak at the (012), and the existence of silver atoms could be recognized at 2θ = 38.2° which corresponds to the (111) diffraction plane. The optical absorption of nanocomposites depicted the presence of plasma peak related to silver (Ag) at 350 nm. The estimated energy gap from the optical absorption revealed a reduction in the Eg value from (3.97 eV) to (3.59 eV) with the presence of Ag atom. The Photolumincence (PL) peaks were observed at around 355 nm for pure LiNbO₃/Si and 358, 360, 363, 371, 476 nm for different immersion durations respectively, in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study illustrated that with increasing the immersion time, especially at 45 s, a change in the particle morphology was observed (LiNbO₃ NRs structure). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) displayed that the surface roughness decreases from 80.71 nm for pure sample to 23.02 nm for the decorated sample as the immersion time is increased. FT-IR manifested a noticeable increase in the intensity of the peaks of samples decorated with AgNPs. Raman spectroscopy elucidated that the peaks shifted to higher intensity due to the plasmonic effect of Ag nanoparticles. Ag-LiNbO₃/Si heterojunction nano-devices were fabricated successfully and enhanced the optoelectronic properties in comparison with the pure LiNbO₃/Si heterojunction device.

Facile Fabrication of MnO2/Graphene/Ni Foam Composites for High-Performance Supercapacitors

A novel MnO2/graphene/Ni foam electrode was fabricated via the impregnation and electrochemical deposition technique with Ni foams serving as substrates and graphene serving as a buffer layer for the enhanced conductivity of MnO2. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Compared with other methods, our strategy avoids using surfactants and high-temperature treatments. The electrodes exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, high capabilities, and a long cycle life. Various electrochemical properties were systematically studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the specific capacitance of the MnO2/graphene/Ni composite prepared at 1 mA cm-2 of electrodeposition could achieve a scan rate of 10 mV s-1 at 292.8 F g-1, which confirmed that the graphene layer could remarkably improve electron transfer at the electrolyte-electrode interface. The capacitance retention was about 90% after 5000 cycles. Additionally, a MnO2/graphene//graphene asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled and it exhibited a high-energy density of 91 Wh kg-1 as well as had an excellent power density of 400 W kg-1 at 1 A g-1. It is speculated that the strong adhesion between the graphene and MnO2 can provide a compact structure to enhance the mechanical stability, which can be applied as a new method for energy storage devices.

Electrochemical Deposition of Copper on Epitaxial Graphene

Understanding the mechanism of metal electrodeposition on graphene as the simplest building block of all graphitic materials is important for electrocatalysis and the creation of metal contacts in electronics. The present work investigates copper electrodeposition onto epitaxial graphene on 4H-SiC by experimental and computational techniques. The two subsequent single-electron transfer steps were coherently quantified by electrochemistry and density functional theory (DFT). The kinetic measurements revealed the instantaneous nucleation mechanism of copper (Cu) electrodeposition, controlled by the convergent diffusion of reactant to the limited number of nucleation sites. Cu can freely migrate across the electrode surface. These findings provide fundamental insights into the nature of copper reduction and nucleation mechanisms and can be used as a starting point for performing more sophisticated investigations and developing real applications.

2D Materials in Development of Electrochemical Point-of-Care Cancer Screening Devices

Effective cancer treatment requires early detection and monitoring the development progress in a simple and affordable manner. Point-of care (POC) screening can provide a portable and inexpensive tool for the end-users to conveniently operate test and screen their health conditions without the necessity of special skills. Electrochemical methods hold great potential for clinical analysis of variety of chemicals and substances as well as cancer biomarkers due to their low cost, high sensitivity, multiplex detection ability, and miniaturization aptitude. Advances in two-dimensional (2D) material-based electrochemical biosensors/sensors are accelerating the performance of conventional devices toward more practical approaches. Here, recent trends in the development of 2D material-based electrochemical biosensors/sensors, as the next generation of POC cancer screening tools, are summarized. Three cancer biomarker categories, including proteins, nucleic acids, and some small molecules, will be considered. Various 2D materials will be introduced and their biomedical applications and electrochemical properties will be given. The role of 2D materials in improving the performance of electrochemical sensing mechanisms as well as the pros and cons of current sensors as the prospective devices for POC screening will be emphasized. Finally, the future scopes of implementing 2D materials in electrochemical POC cancer diagnostics for the clinical translation will be discussed.

Ni-Co Selenide Nanosheet/3D Graphene/Nickel Foam Binder-Free Electrode for High-Performance Supercapacitor

Transition-metal selenide electrodes have recently attracted increasing interest in supercapacitors resulting from their superior electrochemical performance, lower-cost, and environmental friendliness. Herein, we report a novel bimetallic Ni-Co selenide nanosheet/three-dimensional (3D) graphene/nickel foam binder-free electrode (NiCo_2.1Se_3.3 NSs/3D G/NF) prepared via chemical vapor deposition followed by a simple two-step hydrothermal process in this paper. The NiCo_2.1Se_3.3 NSs array vertically on 3D G/NF with a uniform and stable structure without using any chemical binders. This novel electrode is flexible, highly conductive, and exhibits an excellent specific capacitance of ∼742.4 F g^-1 at 1 mA cm^-2. Furthermore, with a 10-fold increase to 10 mA cm^-2, it still retains 471.78 F g^-1 and a high cycling stability of ∼83.8% of the initial retention after 1000 cycles at 10 mA cm^-2, demonstrating that NiCo_2.1Se_3.3 NSs/3D G/NF binder-free electrode has potential for energy storage application in high-performance supercapacitor fields.

Highly active and stable copper catalysts derived from copper silicate double-shell nanofibers with strong metal–support interactions for the RWGS reaction
