Graphene/graphitic carbon nitride decorated with AgBr to boost photoelectrochemical performance with enhanced catalytic ability

Magnetic ε-Phosphorene for Sensing Greenhouse Gas Molecules

It is critical for gas sensors that sense greenhouse gas molecules to have both good sensitivity and selectivity for water molecules in the ambient environment. Here, we study the charge transfer, IV curves, and electric field tuning of vanadium-doped monolayer ϵ-phosphorene as a sensor for NO, NO₂, and H₂O gas molecules via first-principle and transport calculations. We find that the paramagnetic toxic molecules of NO and NO₂ have a high adsorption energy on V-ϵ-phosphorene, which originates from a large amount of charge transfer driven by the hybridisation of the localised spin states of the host with the molecular frontier orbital. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function, we investigate the IV responses with respect to the adsorption of different molecules to study the performance of gas molecule sensors. Our IV curves show a larger amount of changes in resistance of the paramagnetic NO and NO₂ than nonmagnetic H₂O gas molecules, suggesting both sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, our calculations show that an applied external electric field (gate voltage) can effectively tune the amount of charge transfer. More charge transfer makes the sensor more sensitive to the molecule, while less charge transfer can reduce the adsorption energy and remove the adsorbed molecules, allowing for the repeated use of the sensor.

Electrocatalytic activity of MoSi2N4monolayers decorated with single transition metal atoms: a computational study

Two-dimensional (2D) MoSi₂N₄is a newly created material that has superstability and ultrahigh carrier mobility. Besides, the hydrogen evolution reaction activity was proved excellent by doping transition metal (TM) atoms and introducing N vacancies. But, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of 2D MoSi₂N₄is unclear even. We have explored the electrocatalytic properties (OER/ORR) of MoSi₂N₄by introducing Si vacancies and attaching various TM atoms. The structure and optoelectronic characteristics of MoSi₂N₄have been researched in detail using density functional theory calculations. By analyzing the density of states, the free energy change diagram and contour maps of TM@V_Si-MoSiN, the results show that Co@V_Si-MoSiN has the lowest OER overpotential (0.53 V) among all samples. Additionally, the d-band center is used to explain the electrocatalytic origin of the OER and ORR of TM@V_Si-MoSiN. Our discoveries expand the 2D TM@V_Si-MoSiN applicability in the realm of catalysis.

Structural and Optical Characterization of g-C3N4 Nanosheet Integrated PVC/PVP Polymer Nanocomposites

The present work considers the integration of g-C₃N₄ nanosheets into PVC/PVP polymer nanocomposites at ratios of 0.0, 0.3, 0.6, and 1.0 wt%. The XRD data scans showed semicrystalline structures for all PVC/PVP/g-C₃N₄ polymer blend films. The FTIR and Raman measurements revealed intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the g-C₃N₄ surface and the OH^- groups of the PVC/PVP network. ESEM morphology analysis for PVC/PVP/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite films displayed homogeneous surface textures. The data of TGA showed improved thermal stability as the decomposition temperature increased from 262 to 276 °C with the content of g-C₃N₄ (0.0-1.0 wt%). The optical absorbance data for PVC/PVP films improved after the addition of g-C₃N₄. The optical energy gaps showed compositional dependence on the g-C₃N₄ content, which changed from 5.23 to 5.34 eV at indirect allowed transitions. The refractive index for these blend films enhanced (1.83-3.96) with the inclusion of g-C₃N₄. Moreover, the optical susceptibility for these nanocomposite films increased as the content of g-C₃N₄ changed from 0.0 to 1.0 wt%. Finally, the values of the nonlinear refractive index showed improvement with the increased percentage of g-C₃N₄. When g-C₃N₄ was added up to 1.0 wt%, the DC conductivity improved from 4.21 × 10^-8 to 1.78 × 10^-6 S/cm. The outcomes of this study prove the suitable application of PVC/PVP/g-C₃N₄ in optoelectronic fiber sensors.

High-Throughput Preparation of Uncontaminated Graphene-Oxide Aqueous Dispersions with Antioxidant Properties by Semi-Automated Diffusion Dialysis

A semi-automated diffusion-dialysis purification procedure is proposed for the preparation of uncontaminated graphene oxide (GO) aqueous dispersions. The purification process is integrated with analytical-signal processing to control the purification degree online by several channels: oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity, and absorbance. This approach reduces the amounts of reagents for chemical treatment during dialysis. The total transition metal (Mn and Ti) content was reduced to a sub-ppb level (assessed by slurry nebulization in inductively coupled plasma optical atomic emission spectroscopy). Purified aqueous GO samples possess good stability for about a year with a zeta-potential of ca. -40 mV and a lateral size of ca. sub-µm. Purified GO samples showed increased antioxidant properties (up to five times compared to initial samples according to chemiluminometry by superoxide-radical (O₂^-) generated in situ from xanthine and xanthine oxidase with the lucigenin probe) and significantly decreased peroxidase-like activity (assessed by the H₂O₂-L-012 system).

Direct Z-scheme SiNWs@Co3O4 photocathode with a cocatalyst of sludge-derived carbon quantum dots for efficient photoelectrochemical hydrogen production

Solar driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production has attracted considerable attention, but the design of highly efficient, robust and low-cost photocathode still remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a novel SiNWs@Co₃O₄Z-scheme heterojunction photocathode with carbon quantum dots eco-friendly derived from sludge (SCQDs) as the co-catalyst. The photocathode not only leads to effective separation of electron-hole pair, lower transmission resistance, and longer lifetime of charge carriers, but also elevates the stability by preventing direct contact between the SiNWs and the electrolyte as well as the self-oxidation. Simultaneously, the excellent electron transport properties of the SCQDs further improved the PEC performance. Correspondingly, a maximum current density of 14.88 mA·cm^-2 was obtained at -0.67 V with the applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) achieving 8.4% under visible light irradiations at pH = 7. This work provides a promising scheme for Si-based photocathodes for PEC hydrogen production with a high performance, reliable stability, and low-cost.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol under visible light over carbon nitride nanosheets with carbon vacancies

Two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄, GCN) is considered as one of the promising visible light-responsive photocatalysts for energy storage and environmental remediation. However, the photocatalytic performance of pristine GCN is restricted by the inherent shortcomings of rapid charge carrier recombination and limited absorption of visible light. Vacancy engineering is widely accepted as the auspicious approach for boosting the photocatalytic activity of GCN-based photocatalysts. Herein, a magnesium thermal calcination method has been developed to reconstruct GCN, in which magnesium serves as a carbon etcher for introducing carbon vacancies and pores into GCN (V_c-GCN). The fabricated V_c-GCN demonstrates excellent photocatalytic performances of degrading hazardous 4-chlorophenol under visible light irradiation benefiting from the improved carrier separating and light absorption ability as well as rich reactive sites. The optimal V_c-GCN sample delivers 2.3-fold enhancement from the pristine GCN. The work provides a tactic to prepare GCN photocatalysts with controllable carbon vacancies and for a candidate for the degradation of organic pollutants from the environment.
