Exploring SERS from complex patterns fabricated by multi-exposure laser interference lithography

Field-Assisted Efficient Capturing and Analysis of Airborne Nanoparticulate Matter Using a Multifunctional Nanoporous Membrane

As the potential adverse health and environmental effects of nanoscale pollutants have garnered significant attention, the demand for monitoring and capturing ultrafine particulate matter has been growing. With the rise in ultrafine dust emissions, this issue has become increasingly important. However, submicron particles require advanced strategies to be captured because of their limited inertial effect. For example, electrostatic air filters have been investigated for their improved performance in the fine particle regime. On the other hand, Raman spectroscopy was proposed as a promising analytical strategy for aerosol particles because it can be used to conveniently detect analytes in a label-free manner. Thus, the synergistic integration of these strategies can open new applications for addressing environment-related challenges. This study presents a multifunctional approach for achieving both air filtration and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for analyte identification. We propose a nanoporous membrane composed of a thin gold layer, copper, and copper oxide to provide the desired functions. The structures are produced by performing scalable electrodeposition and subsequent electron-beam evaporation, attaining an excellent filtration efficiency of 95.9% with an applied voltage of 5 kV for 300 nm KCl particles and a pressure drop of 121 Pa. Raman intensity measurements confirm that the nanodendritic surface of the membrane intensifies the Raman signals and allows for the detection of 10 μL of nanoplastic particle dispersion with a concentration of 50 μg/mL. Rhodamine 6G aerosol stream with an approximate particle deposition rate of 0.040 × 106 mm-2·min-1 is also identified in a minimum detectable time of 50 s. The membrane is shown to be recyclable owing to its structural robustness in organic solvents. In addition, the fatigue resistance of the structure is evaluated through 22,000 iterative loading cycles at a pressure of 177 kPa. No performance degradation is observed after the fatigue loading.

Low-Variance Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Using Confined Gold Nanoparticles over Silicon Nanocones

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates are of utmost interest in the analyte detection of biological and chemical diagnostics. This is primarily due to the ability of SERS to sensitively measure analytes present in localized hot spots of the SERS nanostructures. In this work, we present the formation of 67 ± 6 nm diameter gold nanoparticles supported by vertically aligned shell-insulated silicon nanocones for ultralow variance SERS. The nanoparticles are obtained through discrete rotation glancing angle deposition of gold in an e-beam evaporating system. The morphology is assessed through focused ion beam tomography, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The optical properties are discussed and evaluated through reflectance measurements and finite-difference time-domain simulations. Lastly, the SERS activity is measured by benzenethiol functionalization and subsequent Raman spectroscopy in the surface scanning mode. We report a homogeneous analytical enhancement factor of 2.2 ± 0.1 × 10⁷ (99% confidence interval for N = 400 grid spots) and made a comparison to other lithographically derived assemblies used in SERS. The strikingly low variance (4%) of our substrates facilitates its use for many potential SERS applications.

3D hotspot matrix of Au nanoparticles on Au island film with a spacer layer of dithiol molecules for highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Engineering of efficient plasmonic hotspots has been receiving great attention to enhance the sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In the present study, we propose a highly sensitive SERS platform based on Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) on Au island film (AuIF) with a spacer layer of 1,4-benzenedimethanethiol (BDMT). The three-dimensional (3D) hotspot matrix has been rationally designed based on the idea of employing 3D hotspots with a vertical nanogap between AuIF and AuNPs after generating large area two-dimensional hotspots of AuIF. AuNPs@BDMT@AuIF are fabricated by functionalizing BDMT on AuIF and then immobilizing AuNPs. The SERS performance is investigated with Rhodamine 6G as a probe molecule and the determined enhancement factor is 1.3 × 10⁵. The AuNPs@BDMT@AuIF are then employed to detect thiram, which is used as a fungicide, with a detection limit of 13 nM. Our proposed platform thus shows significant potential for use in highly sensitive SERS sensors.
