Current-conveyor-based wide-band current driver for electrical impedance tomography

Breast cancer recognition by electrical impedance tomography implemented with Gaussian relaxation-time distribution (EIT-GRTD)

The comparison between breast cancer recognition by electrical impedance tomography implemented with Gaussian relaxation time distribution (EIT-GRTD) and conventional EIT has been conducted to evaluate the optimal frequency for cancer detection f cancer. The EIT-GRTD has two steps, which are 1) the determination of the f cancer and 2) the refinement of breast reconstruction through time-constant enhancement. This paper employs two-dimensional numerical simulations by a finite element method (FEM) software to replicate the process of breast cancer recognition. The simulation is constructed based on two distinct electrical properties, which are conductivity σ and permitivitty ε, inherent to two major breast tissues: adipose tissues, and breast cancer tissues. In this case, the σ and ε of breast cancer σ cancer, ε cancer are higher than adipose tissues σ adipose, ε adipose. The simulation results indicate that the most effective frequency for breast cancer detection based on EIT-GRTD is f cancer = 56,234 Hz. Meanwhile, conventional EIT requires more processing to determine the f cancer based on image results or spatial conductivity analysis. Quantitatively, both EIT-GRTD and conventional EIT can clearly show the position of the cancer in layers 1 and 2 for EIT-GRTD and only layer 1 for conventional EIT.

3.6 mW Active-Electrode ECG/ETI Sensor System Using Wideband Low-Noise Instrumentation Amplifier and High Impedance Balanced Current Driver

An active electrode (AE) and back-end (BE) integrated system for enhanced electrocardiogram (ECG)/electrode-tissue impedance (ETI) measurement is proposed. The AE consists of a balanced current driver and a preamplifier. To increase the output impedance, the current driver uses a matched current source and sink, which operates under negative feedback. To increase the linear input range, a new source degeneration method is proposed. The preamplifier is realized using a capacitively-coupled instrumentation amplifier (CCIA) with a ripple-reduction loop (RRL). Compared to the traditional Miller compensation, active frequency feedback compensation (AFFC) achieves bandwidth extension using the reduced size of the compensation capacitor. The BE performs three types of signal sensing: ECG, band power (BP), and impedance (IMP) data. The BP channel is used to detect the Q-, R-, and S-wave (QRS) complex in the ECG signal. The IMP channel measures the resistance and reactance of the electrode-tissue. The integrated circuits for the ECG/ETI system are realized in the 180 nm CMOS process and occupy a 1.26 mm² area. The measured results show that the current driver supplies a relatively high current (>600 μA_pp) and achieves a high output impedance (1 MΩ at 500 kHz). The ETI system can detect resistance and capacitance in the ranges of 10 mΩ-3 kΩ and 100 nF-100 μF, respectively. The ECG/ETI system consumes 3.6 mW using a single 1.8 V supply.

A Band-Pass Instrumentation Amplifier Based on a Differential Voltage Current Conveyor for Biomedical Signal Recording Applications

Recently, due to their abundant benefits, current-mode instrumentation amplifiers have received considerable attention in medical instrumentation and read-out circuit for biosensors. This paper is focused on the design of current-mode instrumentation amplifiers for portable, implantable, and wearable electrocardiography and electroencephalography applications. To this end, a CMOS differential voltage second-generation current conveyor (DVCCII) based on a linear transconductor is presented. A new band-pass instrumentation amplifier, based on the designed DVCCII, is also implemented in this paper. The concept of the proposed differential voltage current conveyor and instrumentation amplifier is validated numerically and their predicted performance is presented. The simulation results of the presented circuits were tested for 0.18 μm TSMC CMOS technology in a post layout simulation level using the Cadence Virtuoso tool with a ±0.9 V power supply, and demonstrated that the designed DVCCII has a wide dynamic range of ±400 mV and ±0.85 mA and a power consumption of 148 μW. The layout of the DVCCII circuit occupies a total area of 0.378 μm2. It is shown that the designed DVCCII benefits from good linearity over a wide range of input signals and provides a low input impedance at terminal X. Two versions of the proposed band-pass instrumentation amplifier using pseudo resistances were designed with different specifications for two different applications, namely for EEG and ECG signals. Numerical analyses of both designs show proper outputs and frequency responses by eliminating the undesired artifact and DC component of the EEG and ECG input signals.

Electrical Impedance Tomography Technical Contributions for Detection and 3D Geometric Localization of Breast Tumors: A Systematic Review

Impedance measuring acquisition systems focused on breast tumor detection, as well as image processing techniques for 3D imaging, are reviewed in this paper in order to define potential opportunity areas for future research. The description of reported works using electrical impedance tomography (EIT)-based techniques and methodologies for 3D bioimpedance imaging of breast tissues with tumors is presented. The review is based on searching and analyzing related works reported in the most important research databases and is structured according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) parameters and statements. Nineteen papers reporting breast tumor detection and location using EIT were systematically selected and analyzed in this review. Clinical trials in the experimental stage did not produce results in most of analyzed proposals (about 80%), wherein statistical criteria comparison was not possible, such as specificity, sensitivity and predictive values. A 3D representation of bioimpedance is a potential tool for medical applications in malignant breast tumors detection being capable to estimate an ap-proximate the tumor volume and geometric location, in contrast with a tumor area computing capacity, but not the tumor extension depth, in a 2D representation.

Analysis, Simulation, and Development of a Low-Cost Fully Active-Electrode Bioimpedance Measurement Module

A low-cost 1 kHz–400 kHz operating frequency fully-active electrode bioimpedance measurement module, based on Howland current source, is presented in this paper. It includes a buffered positive feedback Howland current source, implemented with operational amplifiers, as well as an AD8421 instrumentation amplifier, for the differential voltage measurements. Each active electrode module can be connected to others, assembling a wearable active electrode module array. From this array, 2 electrodes can be selected to be driven from a THS413 fully differential amplifier, activating a mirrored Howland current source. This work performs a complete circuit analysis, verified with MATLAB and SPICE simulations of the current source’s transconductance and output impedance over the frequency range between 1 kHz and 1 MHz. Resistors’ tolerances, possible mismatches, and the operational amplifiers’ non-idealities are considered in both the analysis and simulations. A comparison study between four selected operational amplifiers (ADA4622, OPA2210, AD8034, and AD8672) is additionally performed. The module is also hardware-implemented and tested in the lab for all four operational amplifiers and the transconductance is measured for load resistors of 150 Ω, 660 Ω, and 1200 Ω. Measurements showed that, using the AD8034 operational amplifier, the current source’s transconductance remains constant for frequencies up to 400 KHz for a 150 Ω load and 250 kHz for a 1200 Ω load, while lower performance is achieved with the other 3 operational amplifiers. Finally, transient simulations and measurements are performed at the AD8421 output for bipolar measurements on the 3 aforementioned load resistor values.

Bandwidth and Common Mode Optimization for Current and Voltage Sources in Bioimpedance Spectroscopy

Bioimpedance measurements use current or voltage sources to inject an excitation signal into the body. These sources require a high bandwidth, typically from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. Besides a low common mode, current limitation is necessary for patient safety. In this paper, we compare a symmetric enhanced Howland current source (EHCS) and a symmetric voltage source (VS) based on a non-inverting amplifier between 1 kHz and 1 MHz. A common mode reduction circuit has been implemented in both sources. The bandwidth of each source was optimized in simulations and achieved a stable output impedance over the whole frequency range. In laboratory measurements, the output impedance of the EHCS had its -3 dB point at 400 kHz. In contrast, the VS reached the +3 dB point at 600 kHz. On average over the observed frequency range, the active common mode compensation achieved a common mode rejection of -57.7 dB and -71.8 dB for the EHCS and VS, respectively. Our modifications to classical EHCS and VS circuits achieved a low common mode signal between 1 kHz and 1 MHz without the addition of complex circuitry, like general impedance converters. As a conclusion we found VSs to be superior to EHCSs for bioimpedance spectroscopy due to the higher bandwidth performance. However, this only applies if the injected current of the VS can be measured.

A 1 MHz Miniaturized Electrical Impedance Tomography System for Prostate Imaging

An ASIC for a high frequency electrical impedance tomography (EIT) imaging system for prostate cancer screening is presented. The ASIC enables a small form-factor architecture, which ensures high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at MHz frequencies. The 4-channel ASIC was designed and fabricated in a standard CMOS 0.18- μm technology and integrates a novel current driver for current stimulus, instrumentation amplifier to interface with the tissue, VGA to provide variable gain and ADC with SPI interface for digitization. A prototype miniaturized EIT system was built and it was evaluated using a model transrectal imaging probe immersed into a tank filled with saline and a metal inclusion that demonstrated the open-domain problem of imaging prostate cancer lesion. The system maintained an SNR between 66 and 76 dB over the frequency range of 500 Hz to 1 MHz. Also, it produced reconstructed EIT images that depicted the presence of the small metal inclusion that modeled a prostate cancer imaging application.

DSP-based current source for electrical impedance tomography

OBJECTIVE

EIT systems, particularly those that use a parallel, multiple source architecture, require current sources with very high output impedance. To meet this requirement, sources often use complex analog circuits and require manual or electronically-controlled adjustments. The goal is to implement a current source with simple, adjustment-free analog electronics with high effective output impedance even with significant stray impedance at its output.

APPROACH

The excitation provided to the voltage-to-current converter is adjusted to accommodate the current lost in the finite output and stray impedances. The adaptive algorithm uses the measured voltage and the previously-measured output and stray impedance to determine the needed current adjustment.

MAIN RESULTS

The structure of the source is presented along with an implementation, and experimental results that show the effectiveness of the approach for frequencies up to 1 MHz. The measured output impedance with and without the adaptive compensation are presented as well as measurements of resistive and complex loads.

SIGNIFICANCE

The new current source has low analog complexity, operates over a wide range of frequencies, and can compensate for a significant stray shunt impedance. It can be used to implement improved parallel or serial EIT systems.
