Abstract
In this study, we introduce a method for replacing the glass used in existing display electronic materials, lighting, and solar cells by synthesizing a colorless and transparent polyimide (CPI) film with excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability using a combination of new monomers. Poly(amic acid) (PAA) was synthesized using dianhydride 4,4'-biphthalic anhydride (BPA) and diamine 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (AHP). Various contents of organically modified montmorillonite (MMT) and mica were dispersed in PAA solution through solution intercalation, and then CPI hybrid films were prepared through multi-step thermal imidization. The organoclays synthesized to prepare CPI hybrid films were Cloisite 93A (CS-MMT) and hexadimethrine-mica (HM-Mica) based on MMT and mica, respectively. In particular, the diamine monomer AHP containing a -OH group was selected to increase the dispersibility and compatibility between the hydrophilic clays and the CPI matrix. To demonstrate the characteristics of CPI, the overall polymer structure was bent and a strong electron withdrawing -CF3 group was used as a substituent. The thermomechanical properties, morphology of clay dispersion, and optical transparency of the CPI hybrid films were investigated and compared according to the type and content of organoclays. Two types of organoclays, CS-MMT and HM-Mica, were dispersed in a CPI matrix at 1 to 7 wt%, respectively. In electron microscopy, most of the clays were uniformly dispersed in a plate-like shape of less than 20 nm at a certain critical content of the two types of organoclays, but agglomeration of the clays was observed when the content was higher than the critical content. Hybrids using HM-Mica had better thermomechanical properties and hybrids containing CS-MMT had better optical transparency.

Abstract
Six poly(amic acid)s (PAAs) were synthesized by reacting bis(3-aminophenyl) sulfone with various dianhydride monomers such as pyromellitic dianhydride, 4,4'-biphthalic anhydride, dicyclohexyl-3,4,3',4'-tetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4'-oxidiphthalic anhydride, 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride. These PAAs were then converted to polyimide (PI) films by thermal imidization at various temperatures. To obtain colorless and transparent PI (CPI), the dianhydride monomer used in this study had an overall bent structure, a structure containing a strong electron-withdrawing -CF3 substituent or an alicyclic ring. In addition, some monomers contained ether or ketone functional groups in their bent structures. The thermomechanical properties, optical transparency, and solubility of CPI films with six different dianhydride monomer structures were investigated, and the correlation between the monomer structure and CPI film properties was clarified. Overall, CPI with an aromatic main chain structure or a linear structure had excellent thermal and mechanical properties. In contrast, CPI with a bent structure containing functional groups or substituents in the main chain exhibited excellent optical transparency and solubility.

Abstract
In this study, a novel diamine monomer containing ester and phenyl moieties, 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-diyl bis(4-aminobenzoate) (1,2-DPEDBA), was synthesized through a three-step reaction. Using this diamine, a novel polyimide (PI) film was prepared with 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6-FDA) as a counter dianhydride through a typical two-step chemical imidization. For comparison, poly(pyromellitic dianhydride-co-4,4'-oxydianiline) (PMDA-ODA PI) was also synthesized via thermal imidization. The resulting 6-FDA-DPEDBA PI film was not only soluble in common polar solvents with high boiling points, such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), but also soluble in common low-boiling-point polar solvents, such as chloroform (CHCl3) and dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), at room temperature. The resulting novel PI showed a 5% weight loss temperature (T5d) at 360 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting PI film was colorless and transparent with a transmittance of 87.1% in the visible light region ranging from 400 to 760 nm. The water absorption of the novel PI film was of 1.78%. The PI film also possessed a good moisture barrier and hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the resulting PI film displayed a low dielectric constant of 2.17 at 106 Hz at room temperature. In conclusion, the novel PI film exhibited much better optical transparency, lower moisture absorption, and a lower dielectric constant as well as better solubility than the PMDA-ODA PI film, which is insoluble in any solvent, although its thermal stability is not better than that of PMDA-ODA PI.

Abstract
Coreless filament winding is an emerging fabrication technology in the field of building construction with the potential to significantly decrease construction material consumption, while being fully automatable. Therefore, this technology could offer a solution to the increasing worldwide demand for building floor space in the next decades by optimizing and reducing the material usage. Current research focuses mainly on the design and engineering aspects while using carbon and glass fibers with epoxy resin; however, in order to move towards more sustainable structures, other fiber and resin material systems should also be assessed. This study integrates a selection of potential alternative fibers into the coreless filament winding process by adapting the fabrication equipment and process. A bio-based epoxy resin was introduced and compared to a conventional petroleum-based one. Generic coreless wound components were created for evaluating the fabrication suitability of selected alternative fibers. Four-point bending tests were performed for assessing the structural performance in relation to the sustainability of twelve alternative fibers and two resins. In this study, embodied energy and global warming potential from the literature were used as life-cycle assessment indexes to compare the material systems. Among the investigated fibers, flax showed the highest potential while bio-based resins are advisable at low fiber volume ratios.

Abstract
Graphite sheets are known to exhibit remarkable performance in applications such as heating panels and critical elements of thermal management systems. Industrial-scale production of graphite films relies on high-temperature treatment of polymers or calendering of graphite flakes; however, these methods are limited to obtaining micrometer-scale thicknesses. Herein, we report the fabrication of a flexible and power-efficient cm2-scaled heater based on a polycrystalline nanoscale-thick graphite film (NGF, ∼100 nm thick) grown by chemical vapor deposition. The stability of these NGF heaters (operational in air over the range 30-300 °C) is demonstrated by a 12-day continuous heating test, at 215 °C. The NGF exhibits a fast switching response and attains a steady peak temperature of 300 °C at a driving bias of 7.8 V (power density of 1.1 W/cm2). This excellent heating performance is attributed to the structural characteristics of the NGF, which contains well-distributed wrinkles and micrometer-wide few-layer graphene domains (characterized using conductive imaging and finite element methods, respectively). The efficiency and flexibility of the NGF device are exemplified by externally heating a 2000 μm-thick Pyrex glass vial and bringing 5 mL of water to a temperature of 96 °C (at 2.4 W/cm2). Overall, the NGF could become an excellent active material for ultrathin, flexible, and sustainable heating panels that operate at low power.

New Strategy for Inducing Surface Anisotropy in Polyimide Films for Nematics Orientation in Display Applications. NANOMATERIALS 2021; 11:nano11113107. Abstract
The operability of liquid crystal displays is strongly impacted by the orientation aspects of nematics, which in turn are affected by the alignment layer surface features. In this work, two polyimide (PI) structures are obtained based on a cycloaliphatic dianhydride and aromatic or aliphatic diamines with distinct flexibility. The attained PI films have high transmittance (T) for visible radiations, i.e., at 550 nm T > 80%. Here, a novel strategy for creating surface anisotropy in the samples that combines rubbing with a cloth and stretching via pressing is reported. Birefringence and atomic force microscopy (AFM) scans reveal that the generated orientation of the chains is affected by the chemical structure of the polymer and order of the steps involved in the surface treatment. Molecular modeling computations and wettability tests show that the PI structure and produced surface topography are competitive factors, which are impacting the intensity of the interactions with the nematic liquid crystals. The achieved results are of great relevance for designing of reliable display devices with improved uniform orientation of liquid crystals.

Abstract
To prepare soluble polyimides with high temperature resistance, two new diamine monomers, namely, 2,2′-(4,4′-oxybisphenylene)-bis(1-phenyl-5-aminobenzimidazole) (5a), and 2,2′-(4,4′-hexafluoroisopropylidene)-bis(1-phenyl-5- aminobenzimidazole) (5b), were synthesized and exploited to prepare three series of poly(benzimidazole imides)s (PBIIs) by a conventional two-stage synthesis. The resulting PI films were flexible and tough, possessing high glass-transition temperatures (Tgs = 311°C–390°C), improved optical transparency, and excellent solubility. Moreover, the effect of different configuration on performance was revealed, and these data provided a feasible method to enhance both Tg and solubility of PIs by incorporating N-phenyl benzimidazole and corresponding functional moieties.

Abstract
We report a series of semi-aromatic thermosetting polyimide (PI) resins that can be used as matrix for copper-clad laminates for high-frequency applications. The poly(amic ester) (PAE) resins derived from the diester of 1,2,4,5-cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride, aromatic diamines (the mixture of 2,2′-dimethylbenzidine and 2,2′-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy) phenyl] propane), and the monoester of nadic anhydride were synthesized by Polymerization of Monomer Reactants (PMR) method. The structure conversion of PAE resins at different temperatures was investigated and the B-stage PI powders prepared by thermally baking the PAE resins at 220°C are nearly fully imidized. The viscosities of the B-stage PI powders and the mechanical and thermal properties of the cured PI resins were optimized by varying the molar ratio of the two diamines. The cured PI resins possess low and steady dielectric constants ( Dk) below 3.0 and dielectric dissipation factors ( Df) of less than 0.01 at high frequency of 1–12 GHz. Furthermore, the quartz fiber cloth-reinforced semi-aromatic thermosetting PI composites (QF/PI) exhibit excellent dielectric performance, good heat resistance, and mechanical properties. At a high frequency of 1–12 GHz, the Dk of QF/PI-4 is stable in the range of 3.16–3.2, and the Df is stable in the range of 0.0026–0.0046. These results suggest the potential of the semi-aromatic QF/PI for use in high-frequency IC boards.
