Silver nanoparticle formation by femtosecond laser induced reduction of ammonia-containing AgNO3 solution

Enhancement of Metal Nanostructure Deposition on Silicon Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures by Galvanic Replacement

We report a chemically motivated, single-step method to enhance metal deposition onto silicon laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) using reactive laser ablation in liquid (RLAL). Galvanic replacement (GR) reactions were used in conjunction with RLAL (GR-RLAL) to promote the deposition of Au and Cu nanostructures onto a Si LIPSS. To increase the deposition of Au, sacrificial metals Cu, Fe, and Zn were used; Fe and Zn also enhanced the deposition of Cu. We show that the deposited metal content, surface morphology, and metal crystallite size can be tuned based on the difference in electrochemical potentials of the deposited and sacrificial metal. Compared to the Au and Cu reference samples, GR more than doubled the metal content on the LIPSS and reduced metal crystallite sizes by up to 20%. The ability to tune the metal content and crystalline domain size simultaneously makes GR-RLAL a potentially useful approach in the manufacturing of functional metal-LIPSS materials such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates.

Laser-Assisted Nanotexturing and Silver Immobilization on Titanium Implant Surfaces to Enhance Bone Cell Mineralization and Antimicrobial Properties

Despite the great advancement and wide use of titanium (Ti) and Ti-based alloys in different orthopedic implants, device-related infections remain the major complication in modern orthopedic and trauma surgery. Most of these infections are often caused by both poor antibacterial and osteoinductive properties of the implant surface. Here, we have demonstrated a facile two-step laser nanotexturing and immobilization of silver onto the titanium implants to improve both cellular integration and antibacterial properties of Ti surfaces. The required threshold laser processing power for effective nanotexturing and osseointegration was systematically determined by the level of osteoblast cells mineralized on the laser nanotextured Ti (LN-Ti) surfaces using a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser (Nd:YAG, wavelength of 1.06 μm). Laser processing powers above 24 W resulted in the formation of hierarchical nanoporous structures (average pore 190 nm) on the Ti surface with a 2.5-fold increase in osseointegration as compared to the pristine Ti surface. Immobilization of silver nanoparticles onto the LN-Ti surface was conducted by dip coating in an aqueous silver ionic solution and subsequently converted to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using a low power laser-assisted photocatalytic reduction process. Structural and surface morphology analysis via XRD and SEM revealed a uniform distribution of Ag and the formation of an AgTi-alloy interface on the Ti surface. The antibacterial efficacy of the LN-Ti with laser immobilized silver (LN-Ti/LI-Ag) was tested against both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The LN-Ti/LI-Ag surface was observed to have efficient and stable antimicrobial properties for over 6 days. In addition, it was found that the LN-Ti/LI-Ag maintained a cytocompatibility and bone cell mineralization property similar to the LN-Ti surface. The differential toxicity of the LN-Ti/LI-Ag between bacterial and cellular species qualifies this approach as a promising candidate for novel rapid surface modification of biomedical metal implants.

Synthesis of Air-Stable Cu Nanoparticles Using Laser Reduction in Liquid

We report the synthesis of air-stable Cu nanoparticles (NPs) using the bottom-up laser reduction in liquid method. Precursor solutions of copper acetlyacetonate in a mixture of methanol and isopropyl alcohol were irradiated with femtosecond laser pulses to produce Cu NPs. The Cu NPs were left at ambient conditions and analyzed at different ages up to seven days. TEM analysis indicates a broad size distribution of spherical NPs surrounded by a carbon matrix, with the majority of the NPs less than 10 nm and small numbers of large particles up to ∼100 nm in diameter. XRD collected over seven days confirmed the presence of fcc-Cu NPs, with some amorphous Cu₂O, indicating the stability of the zero-valent Cu phase. Raman, FTIR, and XPS data for oxygen and carbon regions put together indicated the presence of a graphite oxide-like carbon matrix with oxygen functional groups that developed within the first 24 h after synthesis. The Cu NPs were highly active towards the model catalytic reaction of para-nitrophenol reduction in the presence of NaBH₄.

Radical Chemistry in a Femtosecond Laser Plasma: Photochemical Reduction of Ag⁺ in Liquid Ammonia Solution

Plasmas with dense concentrations of reactive species such as hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals are generated from focusing intense femtosecond laser pulses into aqueous media. These radical species can reduce metal ions such as Au³⁺ to form metal nanoparticles (NPs). However, the formation of H₂O₂ by the recombination of hydroxyl radicals inhibits the reduction of Ag⁺ through back-oxidation. This work has explored the control of hydroxyl radical chemistry in a femtosecond laser-generated plasma through the addition of liquid ammonia. The irradiation of liquid ammonia solutions resulted in a reaction between NH₃ and OH·, forming peroxynitrite and ONOO^-, and significantly reducing the amount of H₂O₂ generated. Varying the liquid ammonia concentration controlled the Ag⁺ reduction rate, forming 12.7 ± 4.9 nm silver nanoparticles at the optimal ammonia concentration. The photochemical mechanisms underlying peroxynitrite formation and Ag⁺ reduction are discussed.
