Relationship between wingbeat frequency and resonant frequency of the wing in insects

Altering developmental oxygen exposure influences thermoregulation and flight performance of Manduca sexta

Endothermic, flying insects are capable of some of the highest recorded metabolic rates. This high aerobic demand is made possible by the insect's tracheal system, which supplies the flight muscles with oxygen. Many studies focus on metabolic responses to acute changes in oxygen to test the limits of the insect flight metabolic system, with some flying insects exhibiting oxygen limitation in flight metabolism. These acute studies do not account for possible changes induced by developmental phenotypic plasticity in response to chronic changes in oxygen levels. The endothermic moth Manduca sexta is a model organism that is easy to raise and exhibits a high thorax temperature during flight (∼40°C). In this study, we examined the effects of developmental oxygen exposure during the larval, pupal and adult stages on the adult moth's aerobic performance. We measured flight critical oxygen partial pressure (Pcrit-), thorax temperature and thermoregulating metabolic rate to understand the extent of developmental plasticity as well as effects of developmental oxygen levels on endothermic capacity. We found that developing in hypoxia (10% oxygen) decreased thermoregulating thorax temperature when compared with moths raised in normoxia or hyperoxia (30% oxygen), when moths were warming up in atmospheres with 21-30% oxygen. In addition, moths raised in hypoxia had lower critical oxygen levels when flying. These results suggest that chronic developmental exposure to hypoxia affects the adult metabolic phenotype and potentially has implications for thermoregulatory and flight behavior.

Electrostatic pollination by butterflies and moths

Animals, most notably insects, generally seem to accumulate electrostatic charge in nature. These electrostatic charges will exert forces on other charges in these animals' environments and therefore have the potential to attract or repel other objects, for example, pollen from flowers. Here, we show that butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) accumulate electrostatic charge while in flight. Then, using finite element analysis, we demonstrate that when within millimetres of a flower, the electrostatic charge of a lepidopteran generates an electric field in excess of 5 kV m-1, and that an electric field of this magnitude is sufficient to elicit contactless pollen transfer from flowers across air gaps onto the body of a butterfly or moth. Furthermore, we see that phylogenetic variations exist in the magnitude and polarity of net charge between different species and families and Lepidoptera. These phylogenetic variations in electrostatic charging correlate with morphological, biogeographical and ecological differences between different clades. Such correlations with biogeographical and ecological differences may reflect evolutionary adaptations towards maximizing or minimizing charge accumulation, in relation to pollination, predation and parasitism, and thus we introduce the idea that electrostatic charging may be a trait upon which evolution can act.

Prey can detect predators via electroreception in air

Predators and prey benefit from detecting sensory cues of each other's presence. As they move through their environment, terrestrial animals accumulate electrostatic charge. Because electric charges exert forces at a distance, a prey animal could conceivably sense electrical forces to detect an approaching predator. Here, we report such a case of a terrestrial animal detecting its predators by electroreception. We show that predatory wasps are charged, thus emit electric fields, and that caterpillars respond to such fields with defensive behaviors. Furthermore, the mechanosensory setae of caterpillars are deflected by these electrostatic forces and are tuned to the wingbeat frequency of their insect predators. This ability unveils a dimension of the sensory interactions between prey and predators and is likely widespread among terrestrial animals.

Harvesting pollen with vibrations: towards an integrative understanding of the proximate and ultimate reasons for buzz pollination

Buzz pollination, a type of interaction in which bees use vibrations to extract pollen from certain kinds of flowers, captures a close relationship between thousands of bee and plant species. In the last 120 years, studies of buzz pollination have contributed to our understanding of the natural history of buzz pollination, and basic properties of the vibrations produced by bees and applied to flowers in model systems. Yet, much remains to be done to establish its adaptive significance and the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of buzz pollination across diverse plant and bee systems. Here, we review for bees and plants the proximate (mechanism and ontogeny) and ultimate (adaptive significance and evolution) explanations for buzz pollination, focusing especially on integrating across these levels to synthesize and identify prominent gaps in our knowledge. Throughout, we highlight new technical and modelling approaches and the importance of considering morphology, biomechanics and behaviour in shaping our understanding of the adaptive significance of buzz pollination. We end by discussing the ecological context of buzz pollination and how a multilevel perspective can contribute to explain the proximate and evolutionary reasons for this ancient bee-plant interaction.

Experimental studies suggest differences in the distribution of thorax elasticity between insects with synchronous and asynchronous musculature

Insects have developed diverse flight actuation mechanisms, including synchronous and asynchronous musculature. Indirect actuation, used by insects with both synchronous and asynchronous musculature, transforms thorax exoskeletal deformation into wing rotation. Though thorax deformation is often attributed exclusively to muscle tension, the inertial and aerodynamic forces generated by the flapping wings may also contribute. In this study, a tethered flight experiment was used to simultaneously measure thorax deformation and the inertial/aerodynamic forces acting on the thorax generated by the flapping wing. Compared to insects with synchronous musculature, insects with asynchronous muscle deformed their thorax 60% less relative to their thorax diameter and their wings generated 2.8 times greater forces relative to their body weight. In a second experiment, dorsalventral thorax stiffness was measured across species. Accounting for weight and size, the asynchronous thorax was on average 3.8 times stiffer than the synchronous thorax in the dorsalventral direction. Differences in thorax stiffness and forces acting at the wing hinge led us to hypothesize about differing roles of series and parallel elasticity in the thoraxes of insects with synchronous and asynchronous musculature. Specifically, wing hinge elasticity may contribute more to wing motion in insects with asynchronous musculature than in those with synchronous musculature.

Modeling and Analysis of a Simple Flexible Wing-Thorax System in Flapping-Wing Insects

Small-scale flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) are an emerging robotic technology with many applications in areas including infrastructure monitoring and remote sensing. However, challenges such as inefficient energetics and decreased payload capacity preclude the useful implementation of FWMAVs. Insects serve as inspiration to FWMAV design owing to their energy efficiency, maneuverability, and capacity to hover. Still, the biomechanics of insects remain challenging to model, thereby limiting the translational design insights we can gather from their flight. In particular, it is not well-understood how wing flexibility impacts the energy requirements of flapping flight. In this work, we developed a simple model of an insect drive train consisting of a compliant thorax coupled to a flexible wing flapping with single-degree-of-freedom rotation in a fluid environment. We applied this model to quantify the energy required to actuate a flapping wing system with parameters based off a hawkmoth Manduca sexta. Despite its simplifications, the model predicts thorax displacement, wingtip deflection and peak aerodynamic force in proximity to what has been measured experimentally in flying moths. We found a flapping system with flexible wings requires 20% less energy than a flapping system with rigid wings while maintaining similar aerodynamic performance. Passive wing deformation increases the effective angle of rotation of the flexible wing, thereby reducing the maximum rotation angle at the base of the wing. We investigated the sensitivity of these results to parameter deviations and found that the energetic savings conferred by the flexible wing are robust over a wide range of parameters.

Modeling the musculoskeletal system of an insect thorax for flapping flight

Indirect actuation of the wings via thoracic deformation is a unique mechanism widely observed in flying insect species. The physical properties of the thorax have been intensively studied in terms of their ability to efficiently generate wingbeats. The basic mechanism of indirect wing actuation is generally explained as a lever model on a cross-sectional plane, where the dorsoventral movement of the mesonotum (dorsal exoskeleton of the mesothorax) generated by contractions of indirect muscles actuates the wing. However, the model considers the mesonotum as an ideal flat plane, whereas the mesonotum is hemispherical and becomes locally deformed during flight. Furthermore, the conventional model is two-dimensional; therefore, three-dimensional wing kinematics by indirect muscles have not been studied to date. In this study, we develop structural models of the mesonotum and mesothorax of the hawkmothAgrius convolvuli, reconstructed from serial cross-sectional images. External forces are applied to the models to mimic muscle contraction, and mesonotum deformation and wing trajectories are analyzed using finite element analysis. We find that applying longitudinal strain to the mesonotum to mimic strain by depressor muscle contraction reproduces local deformation comparable to that of the thorax during flight. Furthermore, the phase difference of the forces applied to the depressor and elevator muscles changes the wing trajectory from a figure eight to a circle, which is qualitatively consistent with the tethered flight experiment. These results indicate that the local deformation of the mesonotum due to its morphology and the thoracic deformation via indirect power muscles can modulate three-dimensional wing trajectories.

Chasing Flies: The Use of Wingbeat Frequency as a Communication Cue in Calyptrate Flies (Diptera: Calyptratae)

The incidental sound produced by the oscillation of insect wings during flight provides an opportunity for species identification. Calyptrate flies include some of the fastest and most agile flying insects, capable of rapid changes in direction and the fast pursuit of conspecifics. This flight pattern makes the continuous and close recording of their wingbeat frequency difficult and limited to confined specimens. Advances in sound editor and analysis software, however, have made it possible to isolate low amplitude sounds using noise reduction and pitch detection algorithms. To explore differences in wingbeat frequency between genera and sex, 40 specimens of three-day old Sarcophaga crassipalpis, Lucilia sericata, Calliphora dubia, and Musca vetustissima were individually recorded in free flight in a temperature-controlled room. Results showed significant differences in wingbeat frequency between the four species and intersexual differences for each species. Discriminant analysis classifying the three carrion flies resulted in 77.5% classified correctly overall, with the correct classification of 82.5% of S. crassipalpis, 60% of C. dubia, and 90% of L. sericata, when both mean wingbeat frequency and sex were included. Intersexual differences were further demonstrated by male flies showing significantly higher variability than females in three of the species. These observed intergeneric and intersexual differences in wingbeat frequency start the discussion on the use of the metric as a communication signal by this taxon. The success of the methodology demonstrated differences at the genus level and encourages the recording of additional species and the use of wingbeat frequency as an identification tool for these flies.

Nonlinear, neuronal adaptation in insect vision models improves target discrimination within repetitively moving backgrounds

Neurons which respond selectively to small moving targets, even against a cluttered background, have been identified in several insect species. To investigate what underlies these robust and highly selective responses, researchers have probed the neuronal circuitry in target-detecting, visual pathways. Observations in flies reveal nonlinear adaptation over time, composed of a fast onset and gradual decay. This adaptive processing is seen in both of the independent, parallel pathways encoding either luminance increments (ON channel) or decrements (OFF channel). The functional significance of this adaptive phenomenon has not been determined from physiological studies, though the asymmetrical time course suggests a role in suppressing responses to repetitive stimuli. We tested this possibility by comparing an implementation of fast adaptation against alternatives, using a model of insect 'elementary small target motion detectors'. We conducted target-detecting simulations on various natural backgrounds, that were shifted via several movement profiles (and target velocities). Using performance metrics, we confirmed that the fast adaptation observed in neuronal systems enhances target detection against a repetitively moving background. Such background movement would be encountered via natural ego-motion as the insect travels through the world. These findings show that this form of nonlinear, fast-adaptation (suitably implementable via cellular biophysics) plays a role analogous to background subtraction techniques in conventional computer vision.

Insect wing 3D printing

Insects have acquired various types of wings over their course of evolution and have become the most successful terrestrial animals. Consequently, the essence of their excellent environmental adaptability and locomotive ability should be clarified; a simple and versatile method to artificially reproduce the complex structure and various functions of these innumerable types of wings is necessary. This study presents a simple integral forming method for an insect-wing-type composite structure by 3D printing wing frames directly onto thin films. The artificial venation generation algorithm based on the centroidal Voronoi diagram, which can be observed in the wings of dragonflies, was used to design the complex mechanical properties of artificial wings. Furthermore, we implemented two representative functions found in actual insect wings: folding and coupling. The proposed crease pattern design software developed based on a beetle hindwing enables the 3D printing of foldable wings of any shape. In coupling-type wings, the forewing and hindwing are connected to form a single large wing during flight; these wings can be stored compactly by disconnecting and stacking them like cicada wings.

Flight system morphology and minimum flight temperature in North American cicadas (Insecta: Hemiptera: Cicadidae)

Thermal responses in cicadas have been studied for many years. The minimum flight temperature (MFT) does not show the same relationship to habitat and behavior as other thermal responses. We measured live mass, wing length, wingspan, wing area and wing loading in an attempt to correlate these morphological parameters to the MFT. We analyzed both intraspecific (in Magicicada cassinii (Fisher, 1852)) and interspecific relationships of the wing morphology and the ability of the cicadas to fly in a large number of North American cicada taxa (n=119). A total of 109 species and 10 subspecies from 17 genera, six tribes, and three subfamilies including all major North American habitats were studied. Analyses show that wing morphology (wing length, wingspan, wing area and wing loading) scales to body size as predicted by geometric similarity (all P<0.0001) for all species and wing area and wing loading (both P<0.0001) in M. cassinii. Mass (P=0.0105), wing length (P=0.0006), wingspan (P=0.0006), wing area (P=0.0055), and wing loading (P=0.0455) all demonstrate a significant correlation to MFT between species, as would be predicted by aerodynamic theory, but not within species. However, the low correlation coefficients suggest the flight system has minimal influence on the MFT of cicadas. Specific physiological adaptations appear to be responsible for the between species variability in MFT rather than being the result of modifications to the flight system morphology.

Infrared light sensors permit rapid recording of wingbeat frequency and bioacoustic species identification of mosquitoes

Recognition and classification of mosquitoes is a critical component of vector-borne disease management. Vector surveillance, based on wingbeat frequency and other parameters, is becoming increasingly important in the development of automated identification systems, but inconsistent data quality and results frequently emerge from different techniques and data processing methods which have not been standardized on wingbeat collection of numerous species. We developed a simple method to detect and record mosquito wingbeat by multi-dimensional optical sensors and collected 21,825 wingbeat files from 29 North American mosquito species. In pairwise comparisons, wingbeat frequency of twenty six species overlapped with at least one other species. No significant differences were observed in wingbeat frequencies between and within individuals of Culex quinquefasciatus over time. This work demonstrates the potential utility of quantifying mosquito wingbeat frequency by infrared light sensors as a component of an automated mosquito identification system. Due to species overlap, wingbeat frequency will need to integrate with other parameters to accurately delineate species in support of efficient mosquito surveillance, an important component of disease intervention.

Extremely Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields Entrain Locust Wingbeats

Extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF EMFs) have been shown to impact the behavior and physiology of insects. Recent studies have highlighted the need for more research to determine more specifically how they affect flying insects. Here, we ask how locust flight is affected by acute exposure to 50 Hz EMFs. We analyzed the flights of individual locusts tethered between a pair of copper wire coils generating EMFs of various frequency using high-speed video recording. The mean wingbeat frequency of tethered locusts was 18.92 ± 0.27 Hz. We found that acute exposure to 50 Hz EMFs significantly increased absolute change in wingbeat frequency in a field strength-dependent manner, with greater field strengths causing greater changes in wingbeat frequency. The effect of EMFs on wingbeat frequency depended on the initial wingbeat frequency of a locust, with locusts flying at a frequency lower than 20 Hz increasing their wingbeat frequency, while locusts flying with a wingbeat frequency higher than 20 Hz decreasing their wingbeat frequency. During the application of 50 Hz EMF, the wingbeat frequency was entrained to a 2:5 ratio (two wingbeat cycles to five EMF cycles) of the applied EMF. We then applied a range of ELF EMFs that were close to normal wingbeat frequency and found that locusts entrained to the exact frequency of the applied EMF. These results show that exposure to ELF EMFs lead to small but significant changes in wingbeat frequency in locusts. We discuss the biological implications of the coordination of insect flight in response to electromagnetic stimuli. © 2021 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

Body-catapult mechanism of the sandhopper jump and its biomimetic implications

Power amplification with catapult-like structures in arthropods is well studied, including the jump mechanism of natural organisms and biomimetic applications in robotics. Most catapult jump mechanisms have been developed based on animals that use legs to jump. However, jumps of some arthropods that use body parts other than legs and that show outstanding performance have been less studied until now. Here, we experimentally studied the jumping behavior of the sandhopper Talitrus saltator to determine whether they jump through the catapult mechanism and identify its critical catapult structures. The results showed that the sandhopper jumps through a body-catapult mechanism (muscle-specific power output: 1.7-5.7 kW/kg, 3.4-11.4 times the power output limit of arthropod muscle). The arch-shaped structures at the fore margin of the five posterior segments can provide a large amount of strain energy storage and account for more than 80% of the total kinetic energy demand. In addition, we build a biomimetic bi-segment device whose extension movement is actuated by sandhopper-inspired spring units. The results indicate that a multi-segmented robotic configuration can achieve rapid jumps based on the same principles of the body-catapult mechanism of the sandhopper.

Forest stratification shapes allometry and flight morphology of tropical butterflies

Studies of altitudinal and latitudinal gradients have identified links between the evolution of insect flight morphology, landscape structure and microclimate. Although lowland tropical rainforests offer steeper shifts in conditions between the canopy and the understorey, this vertical gradient has received far less attention. Butterflies, because of their great phenotypic plasticity, are excellent models to study selection pressures that mould flight morphology. We examined data collected over 5 years on 64 Nymphalidae butterflies in the Ecuadorian Chocó rainforest. We used phylogenetic methods to control for similarity resulting from common ancestry, and explore the relationships between species stratification and flight morphology. We hypothesized that species should show morphological adaptations related to differing micro-environments, associated with canopy and understorey. We found that butterfly species living in each stratum presented significantly different allometric slopes. Furthermore, a preference for the canopy was significantly associated with low wing area to thoracic volume ratios and high wing aspect ratios, but not with the relative distance to the wing centroid, consistent with extended use of fast flapping flight for canopy butterflies and slow gliding for the understorey. Our results suggest that microclimate differences in vertical gradients are a key factor in generating morphological diversity in flying insects.

Experimental Study of the Aerodynamic Interaction between the Forewing and Hindwing of a Beetle-Type Ornithopter

Beetles have attracted attention from researchers due to their unique combination of a passively flapping forewing and an actively flapping hindwing during flight. Because the wing loads of beetles are larger than the wing loads of other insects, the mechanism of beetle flight is potentially useful for modeling a small aircraft with a large weight. In this paper, we present a beetle-type ornithopter in which the wings are geometrically and kinematically modeled after an actual beetle. Furthermore, the forewing is designed to be changeable between no-wing, flapping-wing, or fixed-wing configurations. Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) differential pressure sensors were attached to both the forewing and the hindwing to evaluate the aerodynamic performance during flight. Whether the forewing is configured as a flapping wing or a fixed wing, it generated constant positive differential pressure during forward flight, whereas the differential pressure on the hindwing varied with the flapping motion during forward flight. The experimental results suggest that beetles utilize the forewing for effective vertical force enhancement.

Optical remote sensing for monitoring flying mosquitoes, gender identification and discussion on species identification

Mosquito-borne diseases are a major challenge for Human health as they affect nearly 700 million people every year and result in over 1 million deaths. Reliable information on the evolution of population and spatial distribution of key insects species is of major importance in the development of eco-epidemiologic models. This paper reports on the remote characterization of flying mosquitoes using a continuous-wave infrared optical remote sensing system. The system is setup in a controlled environment to mimic long-range lidars, mosquitoes are free flying at a distance of ~ 4 m from the collecting optics. The wing beat frequency is retrieved from the backscattered light from mosquitoes transiting through the laser beam. A total of 427 transit signals have been recorded from three mosquito species, males and females. Since the mosquito species and gender are known a priori, we investigate the use of wing beat frequency as the sole predictor variable for two Bayesian classifications: gender alone (two classes) and species/gender (six classes). The gender of each mosquito is retrieved with a 96.5% accuracy while the species/gender of mosquitoes is retrieved with a 62.3% accuracy. Known to be an efficient mean to identify insect family, we discuss the limitations of using wing beat frequency alone to identify insect species.

Resonance frequencies of honeybee (Apis mellifera) wings

During flight, insect wings bend and twist under the influence of aerodynamic and inertial forces. We tested whether wing resonance of honeybees (Apis mellifera) matches the wingbeat frequency, against the 'stiff element' hypothesis that the wing's first longitudinal mode exceeds the wingbeat frequency. Six bees were immobilized with their right wing pair outspread, and stimulated with a shaker while the normal modes were recorded with a Scanning Doppler Laser Vibrometer. The lowest normal mode of the wings was the first longitudinal bending mode, and at 602±145 Hz, greater than the wingbeat frequency of 234 Hz±13.9 Hz. Higher order normal modes of the wing tended to incorporate nodal lines in the chordwise direction of the trailing edge, suggesting that their mode shape did not strongly resemble wing deformation during flapping flight. These results support the stiff element hypothesis for Apis mellifera.

Observations of movement dynamics of flying insects using high resolution lidar

Insects are fundamental to ecosystem functioning and biodiversity, yet the study of insect movement, dispersal and activity patterns remains a challenge. Here we present results from a novel high resolution laser-radar (lidar) system for quantifying flying insect abundance recorded during one summer night in Sweden. We compare lidar recordings with data from a light trap deployed alongside the lidar. A total of 22808 insect were recorded, and the relative temporal quantities measured matched the quantities recorded with the light trap within a radius of 5 m. Lidar records showed that small insects (wing size <2.5 mm(2) in cross-section) moved across the field and clustered near the light trap around 22:00 local time, while larger insects (wing size >2.5 mm(2) in cross-section) were most abundant near the lidar beam before 22:00 and then moved towards the light trap between 22:00 and 23:30. We could distinguish three insect clusters based on morphology and found that two contained insects predominantly recorded above the field in the evening, whereas the third was formed by insects near the forest at around 21:30. Together our results demonstrate the capability of lidar for distinguishing different types of insect during flight and quantifying their movements.

Biomechanics of the Peacock's Display: How Feather Structure and Resonance Influence Multimodal Signaling

Courtship displays may serve as signals of the quality of motor performance, but little is known about the underlying biomechanics that determines both their signal content and costs. Peacocks (Pavo cristatus) perform a complex, multimodal "train-rattling" display in which they court females by vibrating the iridescent feathers in their elaborate train ornament. Here we study how feather biomechanics influences the performance of this display using a combination of field recordings and laboratory experiments. Using high-speed video, we find that train-rattling peacocks stridulate their tail feathers against the train at 25.6 Hz, on average, generating a broadband, pulsating mechanical sound at that frequency. Laboratory measurements demonstrate that arrays of peacock tail and train feathers have a broad resonant peak in their vibrational spectra at the range of frequencies used for train-rattling during the display, and the motion of feathers is just as expected for feathers shaking near resonance. This indicates that peacocks are able to drive feather vibrations energetically efficiently over a relatively broad range of frequencies, enabling them to modulate the feather vibration frequency of their displays. Using our field data, we show that peacocks with longer trains use slightly higher vibration frequencies on average, even though longer train feathers are heavier and have lower resonant frequencies. Based on these results, we propose hypotheses for future studies of the function and energetics of this display that ask why its dynamic elements might attract and maintain female attention. Finally, we demonstrate how the mechanical structure of the train feathers affects the peacock's visual display by allowing the colorful iridescent eyespots-which strongly influence female mate choice-to remain nearly stationary against a dynamic iridescent background.
