Redox-stimulated motion and bistability in metal complexes and organometallic compounds

Structural Changes in the Carbon Sphere of a Dirhodium Complex Induced by Redox or Deprotonation Reactions

A carbon-rich molecule is synthesized, which mainly contains conjugated sp2 and sp hybridized carbon centers. Alkenyl and alkynyl binding sites are arranged such that this compound serves as ligand to a binuclear metal unit with a RhI─RhI bond. Furthermore, CH units are placed in proximity to the metal centers. The dicationic complex [Rh2(bipy)2{Ph2Ptrop(C≡CCy)2}]2+(OTf-)2 allows to study possible responses of the carbon-framework to redox reactions as well as deprotonation reactions. All products are, whenever possible, characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods, NMR and EPR spectroscopy as well as electrochemical methods. It is shown that the carbon skeleton of the ligand framework undergoes C─C bond rearrangement reactions of remarkable diversity. In combination with DFT (density functional theory) studies, these results allow to gain insight into the electronic structure changes caused by metal sites in a carbon-rich environment, which may be of relevance for the properties of metal particles on carbon support materials when they are exposed to hydrogen, electrons, or protons.

Redox-enhanced hemilability of a tris(tert-butoxy)siloxy ligand at cerium

Combined structural/electrochemical/computational studies of ceric Ce[OSi(OtBu)₃]₄ and cerous [Ce{OSi(OtBu)₃}₄][K(2.2.2-crypt)] suggest a redox-modulated coordination switch of a tris(tert-butoxy)siloxy ligand.

Theoretical studies on the redox-stimulated isomerization in electrochromic osmium sulfoxide complexes

Redox-stimulated intramolecular isomerization of the DMSO ligand in [Os(bpy)2(DMSO)2](2+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide) was explored theoretically for better understanding the electrochromic properties of osmium sulfoxide complexes. It is found that the HOMO-LUMO gap is decreased because the electron transfer amount from DMSO1 ligand to Os center using Os-S1 linkage is larger than that using Os-O1 linkage, which makes the absorption of such electrochromic Os(II) sulfoxide complexes red-shifted. Moreover, it is observed that Os-O linkage is preferred by the "hard" Os(III) metal and the "soft" Os(I) metal prefers Os-S linkage, compared with Os(II). Intrinsic reaction pathway calculation results demonstrate that Os-S1 → Os-O1 isomerization is favored by Os(II) oxidation, while Os-O1 → Os-S1 isomerization is much easier to be triggered by reduction of Os(III) or Os(II). In addition, DMSO2 linkage isomerization becomes much harder to proceed attributed to the increased bond-strength between DMSO2 and Os center upon Os(II)-O1 → Os(II)-S1 rearrangement, which makes only one DMSO ligand isomerized observed experimentally.

A terminal, fluxional η4-benzene complex with a thermally accessible triplet state is the primary photoproduct in the intercyclobutadiene haptotropism of (CpCo)phenylenes

Low-temperature irradiation of linear [3]- and [4]phenylene cyclopentadienylcobalt complexes generates labile, fluxional η(4)-arene complexes, in which the metal resides on the terminal ring. Warming induces a haptotropic shift to the neighboring cyclobutadiene rings, followed by the previously reported intercyclobutadiene migration. NMR scrutiny of the primary photoproduct reveals a thermally accessible 16-electron cobalt η(2)-triplet species, which, according to DFT computations, is responsible for the rapid symmetrization of the molecules along their long axes. Calculations indicate that the entire haptotropic manifold along the phenylene frame is governed by dual-state reactivity of alternating 18-electron singlets and 16-electron triplets.
