Abstract
Background: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is a late complication of measles infection. However, to date, the pathogenesis of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is still not explained; both viral and host factors seem to be associated. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between NOD1 and NOD2 gene variants and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Methods: The gene variants of NOD1 (rs2075820 and rs2075818) and NOD2 (R334Q and R334W) were explored in 64 subacute sclerosing panencephalitis patients and 70 controls using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: The frequencies of the AA genotype and A allele of rs2075820 (NOD1; c.796G>A) polymorphism were lower in patients compared with controls (P = .022 and .014, respectively). The presence of the A allele of rs2075820 may be considered as a protective factor for subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. There was a significant difference between the groups in rs2075818 (NOD1 G/C) polymorphism, and the CC genotype increased the risk of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis by 3.471-fold. The carriers of the C allele of rs2075818 (G/C) had a 1.855-fold susceptibility to subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (P = .018). The GC genotype might be associated with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis susceptibility in the patients compared with patients without having that haplotype (P = .03). Conclusions: Thus, we identified an association between subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and the rs2075820 (NOD1 G/A) and rs2075818 (NOD1 G/C) polymorphisms. These findings implicate a possible effect of this genetic polymorphism in susceptibility to subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, which needs to be confirmed in bigger populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare, non-treatable and fatal neurological complication of measles, still present due to the return of the epidemic linked to the loosening of vaccination policies. Its mechanism remains unexplained. OBJECTIVE The main objective was to investigate explanatory variables relating to the risk of developing SSPE and its pathophysiology. METHODS Literature analysis was focused on different varieties of SSPE: perinatal forms, short-incubation forms similar to acute measles inclusion body encephalitis (MIBE), rapidly evolving forms, forms occurring in the immunosuppressed, adult forms, and family forms. In addition, several studies on the parameters of innate immunity and interferon responses of patients were analyzed. RESULTS Two main data were highlighted: a relationship between the so-called fulminant forms and the prescription of corticosteroids was established. In familial SSPE, two groups were individualized according to the duration of the latency period, prompting an analysis of patient exomes. CONCLUSION Treatment with corticosteroids should be banned. Knowledge of the genes involved and epigenetics should be useful for understanding the pathophysiology of SSPE and other late-onset neurological infections with RNA viruses.

Abstract
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a late-onset, intractable, and fatal viral disease caused by persistent infection of the central nervous system by a mutant strain of the measles virus. Ribavirin intracerebroventricular therapy has already been administered to several SSPE patients in Japan based on fundamental and clinical research findings from our group, with positive therapeutic effects reported in some patients. However, the efficacy of this treatment approach has not been unequivocally established. Hence, development of more effective therapeutic methods using new antiviral agents is urgently needed. This review describes the current status of SSPE treatment and research, highlighting promising approaches to the development of more effective therapeutic methods.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. Persistence infection can lead to the development of cervical cancer potentially due to some genetic factors such as polymorphisms in regulatory and coding regions of cytokine genes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between TNF-308 G/A or IL18 polymorphisms and high-risk HPV infection among sexually active women from Burkina Faso. Ninety-one HPV infected and two hundred and nine HPV negative women (the latter used as healthy controls) were screened. TNFA-308 G/A and IL18-607 C/A polymorphisms were detected using the TaqMan allelic discrimination. HPV 52 (21.19%), HPV 39 (11.86%) and HPV 33 (11.02%) were the most common HPV genotypes. The TNFA-308A and IL18-607 C alleles were predominant in all women in the study. None of the TNFA and IL18 alleles were associated with HPV infection. The results suggest that there is no relationship between TNF-308 G/A or IL18-607C/A polymorphisms and HPV infection among women in the study.

Abstract
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a slowly progressive brain disorder caused by mutant measles virus. SSPE affects younger age groups. SSPE incidence is proportional to that of measles. High-income countries have seen substantial decline in SSPE incidence following universal vaccination against measles. SSPE virus differs from wild measles virus. Measles virus genome recovered from the autopsied brain tissues demonstrates clustered mutations in virus genome particularly in the M gene. These mutations destroy the structure and functioning of the encoded proteins. Complete infectious virus particle has rarely been recovered from the brain. Human neurons lack required receptor for entry of measles virus inside the neurons. Recent in vitro studies suggest that mutations in F protein confer hyperfusogenic properties to measles virus facilitating transneuronal viral spread. The inflammatory response in the brain leads to extensive tissue damage. Clinically, SSPE is characterized by florid panencephalitis. Clinically, SSPE is characterized by cognitive decline, periodic myoclonus, gait abnormalities, vision loss, and ultimately to a vegetative state. Chorioretinitis is a common ocular abnormality. Electroencephalography (EEG) shows characteristic periodic discharges. Neuroimaging demonstrates periventricular white matter signal abnormalities. In advanced stages, there is marked cerebral atrophy. Definitive diagnosis requires demonstration of elevated measles antibody titers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Many drugs have been used to stabilize the course of the disease but without evidence from randomized clinical trials. Six percent of patients may experience prolonged spontaneous remission. Fusion inhibitor peptide may, in the future, be exploited to treat SSPE. A universal vaccination against measles is the only proven way to tackle this menace currently.

Abstract
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive disease caused by persistent measles virus (MV). It has an incidence of 0.4-2.0/million in Turkey. Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a bleeding disorder whose estimated incidence is 4.2/100.000 person/years in the pediatric age group. We observed three cases with ITP in our cohort of 315 pediatric SSPE cases, an incidence higher than coincidentally expected in the general population. We hypothesize an association between SSPE and ITP. Our three cases had measles 1-2 years before the onset of ITP and 8-10 years before first symptoms of SSPE. A common immunogenetic background creating susceptibility to infection and autoimmunity might play a role. Alternatively, chronic antigenic stimulation by the MV leading to synthesis of cross-reacting antibodies against platelets, or treatment of ITP with immunoglobulins or steroids might affect or alter the development and manifestation of SSPE. The co-occurrence of these two disorders of viral and immune pathogenesis may draw attention to similar observations and provide clues for their mechanisms.

Abstract
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is caused by persistent brain infection of mutated virus, showing inflammation, neurodegeneration, and demyelination. Although many factors are emphasized in the pathogenesis of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, the exact mechanism of neurodegeneration remains unknown. Micro-RNAs are small, noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional levels. Micro-RNAs are essential for normal immune system development; besides they are also implicated in the pathogenesis of many chronic inflammatory disorders. The aim of this study is to investigate the expression patterns of micro-RNAs 146a, 181a, and 155 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. We enrolled 39 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and 41 healthy controls. Quantitative analysis of micro-RNAs 146a, 181a, and 155 were performed using specific stem-loop primers followed by real-time polymerase chain reaction. All of 3 micro-RNAs were upregulated in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis patients. In addition, the level of micro-RNA 155 expression was higher in stage 3 patients. But, micro-RNA 146a and 181a expression levels showed no association or correlation with clinically relevant data. Alteration of peripheral blood mononuclear cell micro-RNAs in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis may shed new light on the pathogenesis of disease and may contribute to the aberrant systemic rise in mRNA levels in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.
