Fate and Transport of Molybdenum Disulfide Nanomaterials in Sand Columns

Statuses, shortcomings, and outlooks in studying the fate of nanoplastics and engineered nanoparticles in porous media respectively and borrowable sections from engineered nanoparticles for nanoplastics

This review discussed the research statuses, shortcomings, and outlooks for the fate of nanoplastics (NPs) and engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in porous media and borrowable sections from ENPs for NPs. Firstly, the most important section was that we reviewed the research statuses on the fate of NPs in porous media and the main influencing factors, and explained the influencing mechanisms. Secondly, in order to give NPs a reference of research ideas and influence mechanisms, we also reviewed the research statuses on the fate of ENPs in porous media and the factors and mechanisms influencing the fate. The main mechanisms affecting the transport of ENPs were summarized (Retention or transport modes: advection, diffusion, dispersion, deposition, adsorption, blocking, ripening, and straining; Main forces and actions: Brownian motion, gravity, electrostatic forces, van der Waals forces, hydration, filtration, bridging; Affecting elements of the forces and actions: the ENP and media grain surface functional groups, size, shape, zeta potential, density, hydrophobicity, and roughness). Instead of using the findings of ENPs, thorough study on NPs was required because NPs and ENPs differed greatly. Based on the limited existing studies on the NP transport in porous media, we found that although the conclusions of ENPs could not be applied to NPs, most of the influencing mechanisms summarized from ENPs were applicable to NPs. Combining the research thoughts of ENPs, the research statuses of NPs, and some of our experiences and reflections, we reviewed the shortcomings of the current studies on the NP fate in porous media as well as the outlooks of future research. This review is very meaningful for clarifying the research statuses and influence mechanisms for the NP fate in porous media, as well as providing a great deal of inspiration for future research directions about the NP fate in porous media.

Influence of Inorganic Anions on the Chemical Stability of Molybdenum Disulfide Nanosheets in the Aqueous Environment

Chemical stability is closely associated with the transformations and bioavailabilities of engineered nanomaterials and is a key factor that governs broader and long-term application. With the growing utilization of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets in water treatment and purification processes, it is crucial to evaluate the stability of MoS2 nanosheets in aquatic environments. Nonetheless, the effects of anionic species on MoS2 remain largely unexplored. Herein, the stability of chemically exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets (ceMoS2) was assessed in the presence of inorganic anions. The results showed that the chemical stability of ceMoS2 was regulated by the nucleophilicities and the resultant charging effects of the anions in aquatic systems. The anions promote the dissolution of ceMoS2 by triggering a shift in the chemical potential of the ceMoS2 surface as a function of the anion nucleophilicity (i.e., charging effect). Fast charging with HCO3- and HPO42-/H2PO4- was validated by a phase transition from 1T to 2H and the emergence of MoV, and it promoted oxidative dissolution of the ceMoS2. Additionally, under sunlight, ceMoS2 dissolution was accelerated by NO3-. These findings provide insight into the ion-induced fate of ceMoS2 and the durability and risks of MoS2 nanosheets in environmental applications.

Environmentally sustainable implementations of two-dimensional nanomaterials

Rapid advancement in nanotechnology has led to the development of a myriad of useful nanomaterials that have novel characteristics resulting from their small size and engineered properties. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) materials have become a major focus in material science and chemistry research worldwide with substantial efforts centered on their synthesis, property characterization, and technological, and environmental applications. Environmental applications of these nanomaterials include but are not limited to adsorbents for wastewater and drinking water treatment, membranes for desalination, and coating materials for filtration. However, it is also important to address the environmental interactions and implications of these nanomaterials in order to develop strategies that minimize their environmental and public health risks. Towards this end, this review covers the most recent literature on the environmental implementations of emerging 2D nanomaterials, thereby providing insights into the future of this fast-evolving field including strategies for ensuring sustainable development of 2D nanomaterials.

Synergistic Effect of Metal Cations and Visible Light on 2D MoS2 Nanosheet Aggregation

Aggregation significantly influences the transport, transformation, and bioavailability of engineered nanomaterials. Two-dimensional MoS₂ nanosheets are one of the most well-studied transition-metal dichalcogenide nanomaterials. Nonetheless, the aggregation behavior of this material under environmental conditions is not well understood. Here, we investigated the aggregation of single-layer MoS₂ (SL-MoS₂) nanosheets under a variety of conditions. Trends in the aggregation of SL-MoS₂ are consistent with classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) colloidal theory, and the critical coagulation concentrations of cations follow the order of trivalent (Cr³⁺) < divalent (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Cd²⁺) < monovalent cations (Na⁺, K⁺). Notably, Pb²⁺ and Ag⁺ destabilize MoS₂ nanosheet suspensions much more strongly than do their divalent and monovalent counterparts. This effect is attributable to Lewis soft acid-base interactions of cations with MoS₂. Visible light irradiation synergistically promotes the aggregation of SL-MoS₂ nanosheets in the presence of cations, which was evident even in the presence of natural organic matter. The light-accelerated aggregation was ascribed to dipole-dipole interactions due to transient surface plasmon oscillation of electrons in the metallic 1T phase, which decrease the aggregation energy barrier. These results reveal the phase-dependent aggregation behaviors of engineered MoS₂ nanosheets with important implications for environmental fate and risk.

Role of nonspherical DLVO and capillary forces in the transport of 2D delaminated Ti3C2Tx MXene in saturated and unsaturated porous media

The transport and retention of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, such as graphene oxide, in porous media have attracted lots of attention. However, previous studies often simplified these 2D colloids as equivalent spheres for numerical simulations, which ignored the influence of particle shape on colloid retention at multiple interfaces. In this study, a novel 2D nanomaterial delaminated Ti₃C₂T_x (d-Ti₃C₂T_x) was adopted to fill this knowledge gap. Comprehensive analyses of the 2D colloid retention mechanisms were conducted based on colloid characterization, saturated and unsaturated column experiments, reactive transport modeling, 2D-based DLVO and nonspherical capillary energy simulations. Results show that d-Ti₃C₂T_x mobility in both saturated and unsaturated conditions enhanced with the increase in pH and decrease in ionic strength. The DLVO interaction energy of d-Ti₃C₂T_x at the sand-water-interface (SWI) decreased with the orientation angle of the colloidal major axis to the sand surface from 0° to 90°. The primary mechanism under saturated flow conditions was the irreversible attachment in the deep secondary minimum at the SWI with the major axis of d-Ti₃C₂T_x parallel to the sand surface. The attachment in the primary minimum at 0° was impossible due to the extremely high energy barrier, and the attachment in the primary and secondary minimum at other orientation angles were negligible. d-Ti₃C₂T_x only experienced repulsive electrostatic force when approaching the air-water-interface (AWI) no matter the particle orientation. The detaching capillary potential energy was 3 orders of magnitude larger than the attractive DLVO interaction energy of the SWI in the secondary minimum at 0°, suggesting that the capillary force-induced irreversible attachment at the AWI was the primary mechanism under unsaturated flow conditions. This study shows that the DLVO and capillary potential energies were significantly dependent on the particle-interface orientation and colloidal shape. A simplification of 2D colloids as spheres is not recommended.

Assessing and Mitigating the Hazard Potential of Two-Dimensional Materials

The family of two-dimensional (2D) materials is comprised of a continually expanding palette of unique compositions and properties with potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, energy capture and storage, catalysis, and nanomedicine. To accelerate the implementation of 2D materials in widely disseminated technologies, human health and environmental implications need to be addressed. While extensive research has focused on assessing the toxicity and environmental fate of graphene and related carbon nanomaterials, the potential hazards of other 2D materials have only recently begun to be explored. Herein, the toxicity and environmental fate of postcarbon 2D materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride, and black phosphorus, are reviewed as a function of their preparation methods and surface functionalization. Specifically, we delineate how the hazard potential of 2D materials is directly related to structural parameters and physicochemical properties and how experimental design is critical to the accurate elucidation of the underlying toxicological mechanisms. Finally, a multidisciplinary approach for streamlining the hazard assessment of emerging 2D materials is outlined, thereby providing a pathway for accelerating their safe use in a range of technologically relevant contexts.

Diverse Applications of Nanomedicine

The design and use of materials in the nanoscale size range for addressing medical and health-related issues continues to receive increasing interest. Research in nanomedicine spans a multitude of areas, including drug delivery, vaccine development, antibacterial, diagnosis and imaging tools, wearable devices, implants, high-throughput screening platforms, etc. using biological, nonbiological, biomimetic, or hybrid materials. Many of these developments are starting to be translated into viable clinical products. Here, we provide an overview of recent developments in nanomedicine and highlight the current challenges and upcoming opportunities for the field and translation to the clinic.

Review of key factors controlling engineered nanoparticle transport in porous media

Nanotechnology, an emerging technology, has witnessed rapid development in production and application. Engineered nanomaterials revolutionize the industry due to their unique structure and superior performance. The release of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) into the environment, however, may pose risks to the environment and public health. To advance current understanding of environmental behaviors of ENPs, this work provides an introductory overview of ENP fate and transport in porous media. It systematically reviews the key factors controlling their fate and transport in porous media. It first provides a brief overview of common ENPs in the environment and their sources. The key factors that govern ENP transport in porous media are then categorized into three groups: (1) nature of ENPs affecting their transport in porous media, (2) nature of porous media affecting ENP transport, and (3) nature of flow affecting ENP transport in porous media. In each group, findings in recent literature on the specific governing factors of ENP transport in porous media are discussed in details. Finally, this work concludes with remarks on the importance of ENP transport in porous media and directions for future research.

Biological and environmental interactions of emerging two-dimensional nanomaterials

Two-dimensional materials have become a major focus in materials chemistry research worldwide with substantial efforts centered on synthesis, property characterization, and technological application. These high-aspect ratio sheet-like solids come in a wide array of chemical compositions, crystal phases, and physical forms, and are anticipated to enable a host of future technologies in areas that include electronics, sensors, coatings, barriers, energy storage and conversion, and biomedicine. A parallel effort has begun to understand the biological and environmental interactions of synthetic nanosheets, both to enable the biomedical developments and to ensure human health and safety for all application fields. This review covers the most recent literature on the biological responses to 2D materials and also draws from older literature on natural lamellar minerals to provide additional insight into the essential chemical behaviors. The article proposes a framework for more systematic investigation of biological behavior in the future, rooted in fundamental materials chemistry and physics. That framework considers three fundamental interaction modes: (i) chemical interactions and phase transformations, (ii) electronic and surface redox interactions, and (iii) physical and mechanical interactions that are unique to near-atomically-thin, high-aspect-ratio solids. Two-dimensional materials are shown to exhibit a wide range of behaviors, which reflect the diversity in their chemical compositions, and many are expected to undergo reactive dissolution processes that will be key to understanding their behaviors and interpreting biological response data. The review concludes with a series of recommendations for high-priority research subtopics at the "bio-nanosheet" interface that we hope will enable safe and successful development of technologies related to two-dimensional nanomaterials.

Differences in the Toxicological Potential of 2D versus Aggregated Molybdenum Disulfide in the Lung

2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) has distinct optical and electronic properties compared to aggregated MoS2 , enabling wide use of these materials for electronic and biomedical applications. However, the hazard potential of MoS2 has not been studied extensively. Here, a comprehensive analysis of the pulmonary hazard potential of three aqueous suspended forms of MoS2 -aggregated MoS2 (Agg-MoS2 ), MoS2 exfoliated by lithiation (Lit-MoS2 ), and MoS2 dispersed by Pluronic F87 (PF87-MoS2 )-is presented. No cytotoxicity is detected in THP-1 and BEAS-2B cell lines. However, Agg-MoS2 induces strong proinflammatory and profibrogenic responses in vitro. In contrast, Lit- and PF87-MoS2 have little or no effect. In an acute toxicity study in mice, Agg-MoS2 induces acute lung inflammation, while Lit-MoS2 and PF87-MoS2 have little or no effect. In a subchronic study, there is no evidence of pulmonary fibrosis in response to all forms of MoS2 . These data suggest that exfoliation attenuates the toxicity of Agg-MoS2 , which is an important consideration toward the safety evaluation and use of nanoscale MoS2 materials for industrial and biological applications.
