Abstract
INTRODUCTION In German-speaking countries children with cancer are treated in about 70 hospitals. While national and European curricula for pediatric oncology and hematology (POH) have been developed, little is known, how far these curricula have been implemented into daily training and what topics are deemed urgent by instructors. METHODS AND MATERIALS In 2022 the Didactics and Educational working party of the German Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Society conducted a survey plus interview by phone call on local educational conditions in POH and needs of educators. RESULTS Thirty-two (45%) POH centers answered the questionary, half have appointed persons overseeing the training. A wide range educational scenarios were described in some centers. Trainees identified urgent needs in areas such as hybrid education and demanded training workshops on specific topics and intensified networking and a general curriculum implemented into daily care as mandatory. CONCLUSION This is the first survey on educational issues in POH in German speaking centers, describing the current situation before and under pandemic conditions. Great individual efforts have already been achieved by dedicated teachers. A comprehensive training program in POH is still missing, which translates the national curriculum into daily practice, while improving networking and balancing the resources of the individual centers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION How to communicate effectively with adolescent and young adults with cancer (AYACs) is a research priority. In a UK-wide survey of young people with cancer's research priorities, communication was a striking cross-cutting theme. It is increasingly recognised that AYACs have experiences and communication needs that differ significantly from those of younger children and older adults. The purpose of this review is to explore the features of effective clinical communication with AYACs. METHODS A literature search was undertaken to identify and map the available evidence using a broad scope to get an overview of the pertinent literature, identify knowledge gaps and clarify concepts. The searches yielded 5825 records, generating 4040 unique articles. These were screened and 71 full articles were read by four researchers with disagreements resolved by discussion leaving 29 included articles. Narrative synthesis was undertaken in relation to each of the research questions. RESULTS Three key themes were identified: being an adolescent/young adult, supporters, and healthcare professionals (HCPs). AYACs need to feel that HCPs understand their unique perspective. They want to be involved, this changes over time and in different contexts. Supporters are a central tenet, are most often parents and undertake several roles which are not always universally supportive. HCPs enable involvement of AYACs, and this needs to be actively promoted. AYACs preference for their level of involvement requires continual assessment. The three themes are interlinked and exist within the wider scope of the triadic encounter and cancer experience. CONCLUSION Supporters, most often parents were a key feature across the data and were seemingly paradoxical in nature. Triadic communication, the presence of a third person, is a central tenet of communication with AYACs and we propose a conceptual model to represent the nuances, components, and facets of this complex communication.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Clinical communication needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer (TYACs) are increasingly recognised to differ significantly from younger children and older adults. We sought to understand who is present with TYACs, TYACs' experiences of triadic communication and its impact. We generated three research questions to focus this review: (1) Who is present with TYACs in healthcare consultations/communication?, (2) What are TYACs' experiences of communication with the supporter present? and (3) What is the impact of a TYAC's supporter being present in the communication? DESIGN Systematic review with narrative synthesis. DATA SOURCES The search was conducted across six databases: Medline, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science and AMED for all publications up to December 2023. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES Included papers were empirical research published after 2005; participants had malignant disease, diagnosed aged 13-24 years (for over 50% of participants); the research addressed any area of clinical communication. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Three independent reviewers undertook full-text screening. A review-specific data extraction form was used to record participant characteristics and methods from each included paper and results relevant to the three review questions. RESULTS A total of 8480 studies were identified in the search, of which 36 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. We found that mothers were the most common supporter present in clinical communication encounters. TYACs' experiences of triadic communication are paradoxical in nature-the supporter can help or hinder the involvement of the young person in care-related communication. Overall, young people are not included in clinical communication and decisions at their preferred level. CONCLUSION Triadic communication in TYACs' care is common, complex and dynamic. Due to the degree of challenge and nuances raised, healthcare professionals need further training on effective triadic communication. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42022374528.

Abstract
Child-centered communication in pediatric oncology can be challenging. We aimed to review communication interventions with children about cancer treatment and prognosis to identify potentially effective child-centered communication models and approaches. We updated a previous review on communication interventions in oncology and searched MEDLINE, Scopus, and PsychINFO for studies indexed between October 2019 up to October 2022. We further searched for ongoing studies on ClinicalTrials.gov. Communication interventions targeting pediatric oncology patients (below 18 years), with outcomes of communication, psychological symptoms or satisfaction in the target population were eligible. We identified 685 titles/abstracts, screened the full text of 34 studies and included only one published study and two ongoing studies. The published study tested a communication tool to help clinicians inform adolescents about treatment options and facilitate shared decision-making. No communication models were identified. We drew on knowledge from existing studies and guidelines to develop a new child-centered communication model.

Abstract
There are two purposes to this study. The first purpose was to develop a communication skills training (CST) program for oncologists working with adolescents and young adults (AYA-CST). The second purpose was to evaluate the program's feasibility. The online AYA-CST program was a half-day workshop including a didactic lecture, role-playing with simulated patients and discussions in a small group. All six oncologists who participated in the program satisfactorily completed it. Our AYA-CST program seems feasible and will be tested further in a randomized control study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Simulation activities, such as roleplay, have become established in undergraduate and graduate education in several subjects of healthcare. The objective of this study was to synthesize the evidence available in the literature on the use of roleplay as an educational strategy in palliative care. METHODS Using the method proposed by Whittemore and Knafl, this integrative systematic review was carried out based on the following guiding question: "What is the available evidence in the literature on the use of roleplay as an educational strategy in the teaching of palliative care?" The databases used for the selection of articles were the following: Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and LILACS. There were no limitations regarding the year of publication or language. RESULTS The articles (n = 34) were grouped into 3 categories, according to the purpose of roleplay use: 1) Use of roleplay as an educational strategy to teach communication in palliative care; 2) Use of roleplay as an educational strategy to teach the communication of bad news, and 3) Use of roleplay as an educational strategy to teach end-of-life care. CONCLUSION Roleplay has been employed in the teaching of palliative care in order to develop skills related to communication and to the provision of end-of-life care. These educational activities have mainly been directed to healthcare students and professionals. Future investigations should further evaluate the efficacy of this teaching strategy, based on studies with more robust designs that allow the establishment of cause-and-effect relationships.

Abstract
Purpose: Following implementation of a student selected module in adolescent and young adult cancer care for medical students, we sought to explore their experiences of the specialty. Methods: We undertook a focus group of five medical students all in their fourth to sixth year of study. Transcripts were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically. Results: We identified six key themes repeatedly elicited during the focus group; these were specialized and holistic care, patient's perspective, connectedness and professional boundaries, triadic communication, emotional impacts, and professional development and support. Conclusion: Early exposure to this specialty is positive for students and the model could be replicated elsewhere.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Qualitative interview-based pilot study. OBJECTIVES A traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) profoundly disrupts the way individuals experience their body. Awareness of one's body is an important element in the psychological adjustment process after TSCI. This pilot study aimed to explore the body experience of individuals during post-acute rehabilitation following TSCI. SETTING Specialized acute care and rehabilitation center in Switzerland. METHODS Eight semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with patients in the post-acute phase of their TSCI. Body experience was explored in relation to perceptive, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and a structured content analysis was performed according to the Mayring method. RESULTS The individuals verbalized body experience in all explored aspects. The two participants with tetraplegia described high body-related awareness, including dependence on other persons or aids, whereas individuals with paraplegia focused on their ability to regain activity and perceived autonomy, which was sustained by increasing injury- and self-related comprehension. They expressed uncertainty in their understanding of their paralyzed body while also verbalizing to see a continuity in their identity pre and post TSCI. Their emotions varied from anxiety and anger to hope and optimism. The interviewees confirmed that the growing ability to describe perceptions related to their body increased their active participation in the rehabilitation process and stimulated hope for the future. CONCLUSIONS Exploration of individual body experience after a recent TSCI can strengthen patients' body awareness, communication and engagement in rehabilitation and help the interprofessional rehabilitation team individualize the rehabilitation process.

Abstract
The experiences of pediatric oncology nurses with prognosis-related communication (PRC) remain largely unknown. The purpose of this article is to report results of focus groups wherein 15 pediatric oncology nurses from three Midwestern pediatric cancer programs provided descriptions of PRC and how they experience PRC within their daily practice. Data from focus groups were analyzed via an interpretive descriptive approach, which resulted in three themes: (1) nurses' operational definition of PRC, (2) nurses' roles in PRC, and (3) nurses' preparation for engagement in PRC. From discussions within the focus groups, nurses recognized that PRC occurs across a continuum. Nurses distinguished that the definition of PRC expands beyond simply reporting life expectancy to describing the consequences of cancer- and treatment-related toxicities and effects. When nurses are not actively invited by their physician partners to participate in PRC, nurses will often develop workarounds to ensure that they understand what was said to patients and families. This allows them to function more effectively as supporters, advocates, and informants. Nurses described little preparation to participate in such challenging conversations. Pediatric oncology nurses need to acknowledge and embrace that they are an integral part of PRC. Interprofessional communication training is necessary to enhance the comfort and confidence of nurses engaging in PRC.
