Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the combination effect of apple cider vinegar (ACV) and metformin against letrozole-induced polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Female Wistar rats were administered letrozole (1 mg/kg/day, p.o) for 21 days, except for the control group of animals. On the 22nd day, PCOS-induced animals were segregated into 4 groups and administered with CMC, ACV, metformin, and a combination of ACV and metformin, respectively. The treatments were continued for 15 days, and on the 36th day, all the animals were sacrificed for biochemical (blood glucose, lipid profile), hormonal (sex hormones and adiponectin), and pro-inflammatory mediator estimations in blood samples. The ovarian tissue samples were used for oxidative stress parameters and histological alterations. The PCOS control animals showed a significant alteration in the estrous cycle. The administration of letrozole resulted in the alteration of hormonal balance and elevation of body weights, glycemic state, lipid profile, pro-inflammatory mediators in serum, and oxidative stress in ovarian samples. Individual treatment groups and combination treatment groups reversed the letrozole-induced alterations in PCOS animals, and more promising results were observed with combination therapy than with individual treatment groups. Further, the therapeutic potential of the combination treatment group was also confirmed by the histological observations in the ovarian samples. The study showed that the combination of ACV and metformin significantly alleviated letrozole-induced PCOS complications in rats. This might have been achieved by mitigating the hormonal imbalance, pro-inflammatory, hyperglycemic, and hyperlipidemic states in serum, and oxidative stress in the ovary samples.

Abstract
Background and aims Obesity and overweight have become significant health concerns worldwide, leading to an increased interest in finding natural remedies for weight reduction. One such remedy that has gained popularity is apple cider vinegar (ACV). Objective To investigate the effects of ACV consumption on weight, blood glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol levels in a sample of the Lebanese population. Materials and methods 120 overweight and obese individuals were recruited. Participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention group receiving 5, 10 or 15 mL of ACV or a control group receiving a placebo (group 4) over a 12-week period. Measurements of anthropometric parameters, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol levels were taken at weeks 0, 4, 8 and 12. Results Our findings showed that daily consumption of the three doses of ACV for a duration of between 4 and 12 weeks is associated with significant reductions in anthropometric variables (weight, body mass index, waist/hip circumferences and body fat ratio), blood glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol levels. No significant risk factors were observed during the 12 weeks of ACV intake. Conclusion Consumption of ACV in people with overweight and obesity led to an improvement in the anthropometric and metabolic parameters. ACV could be a promising antiobesity supplement that does not produce any side effects.

Abstract
Apples and their products exemplify the recently reemphasized link between dietary fruit intake and the alleviation of human disease. Their consumption does indeed improve human health due to their high phytochemical content. To identify potentially relevant articles from clinical trials, some epidemiological studies and meta-analyses, and in vitro and in vivo studies (cell cultures and animal models), PubMed was searched from January 1, 2012, to May 15, 2022. This review summarized the potential effects of apple and apple products (juices, puree, pomace, dried apples, extracts rich in apple bioactives and single apple bioactives) on health. Apples and apple products have protective effects against cardiovascular diseases, cancer, as well as mild cognitive impairment and promote hair growth, healing of burn wounds, improve the oral environment, prevent niacin-induced skin flushing, promote the relief of UV-induced skin pigmentation, and improve the symptoms of atopic dermatitis as well as cedar hay fever among others. These effects are associated with various mechanisms, such as vascular endothelial protection, blood lipids lowering, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiapoptotic, anti-invasion, and antimetastatic effects. Meanwhile, it has provided an important reference for the application and development of medicine, nutrition, and other fields.

Abstract
Arbutus unedo and Crataegus monogyna are widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean basin and commonly used in folk medicine against a wide range of diseases. Therefore, the present study has been designed to evaluate the anti-obesity potential of two aqueous extracts of the fruits of A. unedo (AUAE) and C. monogyna (CMAE). Male Wistar rats were supplied with a standard diet (SD), high-fat diet (HFD), HFD with the two separated extracts at the same dose (300 mg/kg, BW, p. o.), or HFD with atorvastatin-(ATOR) (2.1 mg/kg, BW, p. o.) for 12 weeks. Lipid profile and the liver and kidney linked-markers were assessed. Besides, obesity-related disorders' biomarkers were measured. AUAE, CMAE, and ATOR were observed to reduce significantly total body and organ weights following HFD-induced obese rat models. Likewise, epididymal and abdominal adipose tissue weights were noticeably decreased in HFD rats treated with both extracts and ATOR. Added to that, biochemical and metabolic changes were normalized by significant attenuation of lipid peroxidation accompanied with an increase of thiol-group concentrations and antioxidant status. More importantly, a modulation in trace element levels was revealed when compared with HFD group. Altogether, current study concluded that AUAE and CMAE could be potential candidates for the prevention and treatment of obesity and related disturbs induced by HFD.

Abstract
Aim To perform in vitro analysis of antioxidant and antiurolithiasis to carry out GC-MS-based metabolite profile. Materials & methods The effect of apple cider vinegar (ACV) in vitro, antioxidant and GC-MS analysis was evaluated. The antioxidant studies were performed. In vitro techniques included nucleation, aggregation and growth assay. Results & conclusion The presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids and carbohydrates was shown. Concentrations from 5-30 μg/ml could dissolve calcium oxalate (p < 0.05) in vitro. The IC50 value of ACV in DPPH was found to be around 7 μg/ml and the IC50 value of the ACV in ABTS assay was around 9 μg/ml. Different phytocompounds were obtained from GC-MS analysis. ACV can be consumed to prevent kidney stones which seems helpful to the current therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) adversely affects reproduction. We aimed to study the effect of a high-fat diet (HFD), supplemented with apple vinegar, on folliculogenesis in a rat model of NAFLD. METHODS Female rats were randomly divided into four groups (N = 28): Standard diet (SD), SD + vinegar, HFD, and HFD + vinegar groups. At the end of the study, biochemical tests were assessed in serum. HOMA-IR (Homeostatic model assessment-Insulin resistance) was calculated. Sex hormones were determined using an ELISA kit; ovary follicle counts were studied using histological methods. The proliferation index of granulosa cells was determined using immunohistochemistry. Kisspeptin expression in the ovary was detected using RT-PCR. RESULTS The HFD induced steatohepatitis and NAFLD. The ovaries in the rat model of NAFLD were atrophied. The ovaries had less count of developing follicles and corpus luteum, and more degenerated and cystic follicles in comparison with the SD group. Vinegar + HFD consumption decreased ALT, compared to the HFD group (P = 0.004). Steatohepatitis was reduced in the Vinegar + HFD group (P = 0.001). Vinegar + HFD considerably reduced HOMA-IR (p = 0.01). The HFD + vinegar diet could increase estradiol (P = 0.001), without significantly affecting progesterone or testosterone. In addition, an increase of primordial follicles as an ovarian reserve and also primary follicles were determined in the HFD + vinegar group. There were no statistical differences in the granulosa cell proliferation index in various follicle types between groups. HFD + vinegar significantly enhanced ovarian kisspeptin expression (p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS The vinegar diet in a rat model of NAFLD raises estradiol, primordial, and small primary follicles, and increases ovarian kisspeptin expression indirectly. Insulin resistance and obesity were improved by apple vinegar, and anti-glycemic and anti-lipidemic effects were also determined. The supplementation of apple vinegar in NAFLD might be useful for ovary. However, it requires further investigation.

Effects of Antioxidant Supplementation on Metabolic Disorders in Obese Patients from Randomized Clinical Controls: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review. Abstract
Purpose This systematic review and meta-analysis aim at elucidating the heterogeneity in beneficial effects of antioxidant supplementation in obese adults by exploring the differential effects of antioxidant supplementation on basic indicators of obesity, lipid metabolism, systemic antioxidant capacity, inflammatory biomarkers, and liver function. Methods The inclusion criteria specified randomized controlled trials with antioxidant intervention for adults (mean body mass index (BMI) > 30), from inception to Aug. 8, 2021, in the PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Meta-analysis and publication bias were performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Stata16 software was used to detect publication bias with Egger's and Begg's methods being mainly used. The data of basic indicators of obesity, lipid metabolism index, oxidative stress index, inflammatory biomarkers, and liver function index were collected to analyze the beneficial effects of antioxidant supplementation in obese patients. Results A total of 30 studies were included in this study with a sample of 845 obese patients from the antioxidant supplementation group and 766 obese patients from the placebo control group. The meta-analysis showed that obese patients with antioxidant supplementation had lower BMI (mean difference (MD): − 0.44 [95%confidence interval (CI): − 0.84, −0.04], p = 0.03), waist circumference (MD : −0.78 [95%CI:−1.45, −0.11], p = 0.02), fasting blood glucose (FBG) level (standardized mean difference (SMD): − 4.92 [95%CI:−6.87, −2.98], p < 0.001) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (MD : −0.45 [95%CI:−0.61, −0.3], p < 0.001) when compared to the placebo group. Obese patients on antioxidant supplementation had lower levels of total cholesterol (SMD : −0.43 [95%CI:−0.84, −0.02], p = 0.04), triglycerides (SMD : −0.17 [95%CI:−0.31, −0.04], p = 0.01), low-density lipoprotein (SMD : −0.15 [95%CI:−0.29, −0.01], p = 0.03), malondialdehyde (SMD : −1.67 [95%CI:−2.69, −0.65], p = 0.001), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (SMD : −0.29 [95%CI:−0.56, −0.02], p = 0.03), respectively, when compared to the placebo group. In addition, obese patients with antioxidant supplementation had higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (SMD : 0.25 [95%CI : 0.03, 0.46], p = 0.03) and superoxide dismutase (SMD : 1.09 [95%CI : 0.52, 1.65], p < 0.001) when compared to the placebo group. Antioxidant supplementation had no effects on other analyzed parameters including waist–hip ratio, leptin, fat mass, interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, alanine transaminase, and aspartate transaminase in obese patients. Conclusion The meta-analysis results indicated that antioxidant supplementation exerted potential beneficial effects in obese patients by regulating FBG, oxidative stress, and inflammation, whilst more high-quality studies are required to confirm these effects. The present study may provide important insights for the treatment of clinical obesity and obesity-associated complications.

Abstract
Pyracantha fortuneana (Maxim.) Li has been used as a herbal medicine in China in its long history. Since ancient times, the fruits of P. fortuneana has been considered a functional food to improve various diseases. Many bioactive substances, including proanthocyanidins, phenols, polysaccharides, and dietary fibers, have been isolated and identified from the P. fortuneana, which possess diverse biological properties both in vitro and in vivo. Although the researches on the P. fortuneana have achieved extensive progress, the systematic study of its biological activities is still relatively lacking. In addition, accumulating researches focus on the landscape value of the P. fortuneana and the development of its by-products. The by-products of P. fortuneana, which show good development potentials in the field of agricultural production and environmental protection, are important for improving the economic value of P. fortuneana and its significance. After extensive reviewing and analyzing the existing published articles, books, and patents, this study aims to a systematic and summarized research trends of P. fortuneana and its phytochemical compositions, nutritional values, pharmacological effects and health benefits of its extracts/monomers, which would be beneficial for the future development of this medicinal plant as functional food or drugs.

Abstract
Overconsumption of a high caloric diet is associated with metabolic disorders and a heightened risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), hepatic steatosis, and cardiovascular complications. The use of functional food has received much attention as a strategy in the prevention and treatment of metabolic disorders. This present study investigated whether Nil-Surin rice bran hydrolysates (NRH) could prevent or ameliorate the progression of metabolic disorders in rats in which insulin resistance (IR) was induced by a high fat-high fructose diet (HFFD). After 10 weeks of the HFFD, the rats showed elevated fasting blood glucose (FBG), impaired glucose tolerance, dysregulation of adipokine secretion, distorted lipid metabolism such as dyslipidemia, and increased intrahepatic fat accumulation. The IR was significantly attenuated by a daily dose of NRH (100 or 300 mg/kg/day). Doses of NRH rectified adipokine dysregulation by increasing serum adiponectin and improving hyperleptinemia. Interestingly, NRH decreased intrahepatic fat accumulation and improved dyslipidemia as shown by decreased levels of hepatic triglyceride (TG) and serum TG, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. In addition, a modulation of expression of lipid metabolism genes was observed: NRH prevented upregulation of the lipogenesis genes Srebf1 and Fasn. In addition, NRH enhanced the expression of fatty-acid oxidation genes, as evidenced by an increase of Ppara and Cpt1a when compared with the HFFD control group. The activities of NRH in the modulation of lipid metabolism and rectifying the dysregulation of adipokines may result in a decreased risk of DM and hepatic steatosis. Therefore, NRH may be beneficial in ameliorating metabolic disorders in the HFFD model.

Abstract
Background Hypercholesterolemia is an independent modifiable risk factor that accelerates the development of both non-alcoholic fatty liver and atherosclerosis. Coconut water contains a variety of phytochemicals that make it appealing for producing vinegar. Coconut vinegar is rapidly gaining popularity for health benefits in Southeast Asia. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of daily supplementation of coconut vinegar on hepatic and vascular oxidative stress in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet (HCD). Methods Mature coconut water was fermented with coconut sap sugar using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Acetobacter aceti vat Europeans, respectively. Bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity of coconut vinegar were examined in vitro. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups; the control group fed a standard diet (S), a group that received HCD (SC), a group that received HCD supplemented with coconut vinegar at a dose of 1 mL/kg/day (SCV), and a group that received HCD with atorvastatin at a dose of 30 mg/kg/day (SCA). After 8 weeks, serum metabolic profiles, fatty liver, hepatic, and vascular oxidative stress were determined. Results In in vitro studies, coconut vinegar was rich in phenolic compounds and organic acids. The antioxidant capacity of 30 μL of coconut vinegar was 181.55 ± 8.15 μM Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). In the HCD fed rats, daily supplementation of coconut vinegar reduced weight gain, serum triglycerides, and fasting blood sugar levels without renal or liver toxicity. In the liver, coconut vinegar reduced the accumulation of both hepatic cholesterol and hepatic triglyceride, and it also reduced hepatic 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) lipid peroxidation. In the aortic tissues, coconut vinegar increased nitric oxide bioavailability and reduced aortic 4-HNE lipid peroxidation. Conclusion Novel coconut vinegar is the source of antioxidants, and daily supplementation of coconut vinegar was found to attenuate dyslipidemia-induced hepatic and vascular oxidative stress by protective against cellular lipid peroxidation.

Abstract
This study aims to examine the ability of apple vinegar on phenylhydrazine (PHZ)-induced hemolytic anemia in Wistar rats. In vitro, phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity were determined. In vivo, phenylhydrazine (10 mg/kg) was injected intravenously into rats for 4 days and then treated with apple vinegar daily by gavage (1 mL/kg) for five weeks. high level of polyphenols and flavonoids (90 ± 1.66 mg GAE/100 mL and 7.29 ± 0.23 mg QE/100 mL, respectively) were found in the apple vinegar which gives it a good ability to scavenge free radicals (TAC = 4.22 ± 0.18 mg AAE/100 mL and DPPH, IC50 = 0.49 ± 0.004 µL/ml). The phytochemical composition of apple vinegar revealed the presence of numerous bioactive compounds including arbutin, apigenin, sinapic, ferulic and trans-ferulic acids. The major antioxidant components in apple vinegar were ferulic and trans-ferulic acids (40% and 43%, respectively). PHZ treatment induced changes in platelets, blood cell count, mean corpuscular volume, hemoglobin concentration and mean capsulated hemoglobin. However, the co-administration of apple vinegar revealed its capacity to ameliorate the changes induced by phenylhydrazine. Therefore, apple vinegar use could have a positive impact on the prevention of hemolytic anemia induced by phenylhydrazine due to the antioxidant properties of its major components.

Abstract
The popularity of fruits vinegar (FsV) has been increased recently as a healthy drink wealthy in bioactive compounds that provide several beneficial properties. This review was designed in the frame of valorization of fruits vinegar as a by-product with high value added by providing overall information on its biochemical constituents and beneficial potencies. It contains a cocktail of bioactive ingredients including polyphenolic acids, organic acids, tetramethylperazine, and melanoidins. Acetic acid is the most abundant organic acid and chlorogenic acid is the major phenol in apple vinegar. The administration of fruits vinegar could prevent diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, oxidative stress, cancer, and boost immunity as well as provide a remarkable antioxidant ability. The production techniques influence the quality of vinegar, and consequently, its health benefits.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the effects of Gundelia tournefortii L. plant extract on different tissues in terms of DNA damage, biochemical and antioxidant parameter values in rats with high-calorie diets. With this aim, Wistar albino male rats were divided into 4 groups containing 6 rats each and the study was completed over 12 weeks duration. At the end of the implementation process over the 12 weeks, rats were sacrificed and blood and tissue samples were obtained. Analyses were performed on blood and tissue samples. According to results for DNA damage (8-OHdG), in brain tissue the OG2 group was significantly reduced compared to the NC group. For MDA results in liver tissue, OG1 and OG2 groups were determined to increase by a significant degree compared to the control group, while the OG2 group was also increased significantly compared to the obese group. In terms of the other parameters, comparison between the groups linked to consumption of a high calorie diet (HCD) and administration of Gundelia tournefortii L. in terms of antioxidant activities and serum samples obtained statistically significant results. Gundelia tournefortii L. plant extracts had effects that may be counted as positive on antioxidant parameter activity and were especially identified to improve DNA damage and MDA levels in brain tissues. Additionally, consumption of Gundelia tournefortii L. plant extract in the diet may have antiobesity effects; thus, it should be evaluated for use as an effective weight-loss method and as a new therapeutic agent targeting obesity.

Maternal soy protein isolate diet during lactation programs deleterious effects on hepatic lipid metabolism, atherogenic indices, and function of adrenal in adult rat offspring. Abstract
The benefits of consuming soy and its protein have been reported in many studies. However, its phytoestrogen content raises concerns about consumption during lactation and gestation We therefore examined the effects of soybean or soy protein isolate on the parameters-related cardiovascular pathophysiology in lactating mothers and their offsprings at weaning and adulthood. Lactating rats were divided: casein control (C); soy protein isolate (SPI); and soybean (S). At weaning, half of the litter received commercial ration up to 150 days. The levels of 17-β-estradiol and superoxide dismutase were low in the S mothers. For the SPI mothers, we observed a reduction of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). At weaning, atherogenic indices [1 = total cholesterol (TC)/HDL; 2 = LDL/HDL; 3 = TC-HDL/HDL)] decreased in the S and SPI offsprings compared to the casein control group; TBARS and antioxidant enzymes increased in the S offspring, while reduced/oxidized glutathione ratio increased in the SPI offspring, indicating lower oxidative stress. In adulthood, the SPI offspring showed an increase in liver cholesterol and atherogenic index 1 and 3 (vs. C and S) and 2 (vs. S). In addition, we found a decrease in catecholamines in the adrenal medulla and an increase in caffeine-stimulated secretion, but tyrosine hydroxylase expression remained constant. Maternal consumption of SPI during lactation worsened atherogenic indices of the offsprings in adulthood, which was associated with increased liver cholesterol and decreased catecholamines in the adrenal medulla. Soy consumption had no consistent long-term effects on the evaluated parameters compared to casein consumption. The data suggest that the consumption of SPI during lactation should be done with caution.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of fermented beverage, kale/apple juice containing 5% vinegar in subjects with metabolic syndrome. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive 250 mL fermented beverage or water containing fructose, glucose, and sucrose twice daily for 10 weeks. Consumption of the fermented beverage significantly decreased plasma triglyceride, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels compared to baseline values (P<0.05). Furthermore, consumption of the fermented beverage significantly decreased homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values and atherogenic indexes compared with baseline values (P<0.05). In the control group, plasma triglyceride, TBARS, TNF-α, and hs-CRP levels, atherogenic indexes, and HOMA-IR values did not significantly differ pre-and post-treatment. The fermented beverage inhibited the activities of α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase in vitro, therefore could be helpful in alleviating metabolic syndrome in subjects with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
As an easily adapted culture, with overloaded production in some parts of the globe, apples and their by-products are being redirected to pharmaceutical, canning and beverages industries, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Fermentation is generally considered to increase the bioavailability of bioactive compounds found in apple, by impacting, through a high degree of changes, the product’s properties, including composition and health-promoting attributes, as well as their sensory profile. Probiotic apple beverages and apple vinegar are generally considered as safe and healthy products by the consumers. Recently, contributions to human health, both in vivo and in vitro studies, of non-alcoholic fermented apple-based products have been described. This review highlighted the advances in the process optimization of apple-based products considering vinegar, cider, pomace, probiotic beverages and spirits’ technologies. The different processing impacts on physical-chemical, nutritional and sensory profiles of these products are also presented. Additionally, the harmful effects of toxic compounds and strategies to limit their content in cider and apple spirits are illustrated. New trends of fermented apple-based products applicability in tangential industries are summarized.

Abstract
Acetic fermentation is a method for processing plant material which has been known since antiquity. Balsamic and apple cider vinegars are investigated as antibacterial, anti-obesity, and anti-diabetic remedies. However, there is little information about vinegars fermented from aromatic herbs and edible plants. The aim of this study was to compare extracts used for culinary and medicinal purposes according to their composition, antioxidant power, and genoprotective properties. Fermented vinegars, acetic macerates, decoctions, and tinctures in 70% ethanol from raspberries, apple peels, rosehips, lavender, mint, and rose petals were prepared. Polyphenols, ascorbate, carotenoid concentrations, and antioxidant power were analyzed. The polyphenols were identified using HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography). The genoprotective properties were measured using a comet assay on lymphocytes. Fermented vinegars were poorest in phytochemicals in comparison to tinctures, decoctions, or acetic macerates, although they contained the highest concentration of metal ions. The antioxidant abilities were correlated to the phenolic content of extract. None of the extracts induced DNA damages into lymphocytes. The rosehip and rose petal extracts revealed the highest genoprotective abilities, while mint and apple fermented vinegars and decoctions had the lowest. Fermented vinegars are not a rich source of phytochemicals and they show weak genoprotective abilities, but, in increasing demand for antioxidants, any form of phytochemical sources is an added-value in diet.

Abstract
Ingestion of alcohol is associated with numerous changes in human energy metabolism, especially that of plasma lipids and lipoproteins. Regular moderate alcohol consumption is associated with reduced atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), an effect that has been attributed to the concurrent elevations of plasma high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations. More recent evidence has accrued against the hypothesis that raising plasma HDL concentrations prevents ASCVD so that other metabolic processes associated with alcohol consumption have been considered. This review explored the roles of other metabolites induced by alcohol consumption-triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, non-esterified free fatty acids, and acetate, the terminal alcohol metabolite in athero-protection: Current evidence suggests that acetate has a key role in athero-protection but additional studies are needed.

Abstract
This randomized, double-blind, clinical trial was designed to compare the endurance capacity (ergogenic property) in healthy athletes after consumption of apple cider vinegar (ACV) and a commercial sports drink (CSD) before and during endurance exercise. Fourteen healthy participants were enrolled in this trial and were divided into two groups as ACV and CSD with seven participants in each. Participants were requested to consume 500 mL of either commercial ACV or CSD 1 h before endurance exercise (bicycle ergometer). Blood samples were collected at baseline, 0, 20, 40, 60 min until exhaustion to assess glucose, lactate, ammonia and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA). Respiratory exchange rate (RER) score was measured every 15 min and the heart rate (HR) was measured every 5 min. The outcome of the present trial clearly showed that no significant differences were observed between ACV and CSD except in the blood level of ammonia (only at exhaustion time). Thus, these results show that ACV and the CSD both possessing the ergogenic property, enhanced blood glucose, NEFA, and suppress the production of lactate as well as maintains normal RER score, and HR throughout the endurance exercise. Overall this trial showcases that ACV did not significantly improve the ergogenic activity over the CSD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some foods and drinks contain special ingredients, causing impressive effects on human health. The aim of the current study was to assess the health effects of apple vinegar in patients with diabetes and dyslipidemia. METHOD Seventy participants with type 2 diabetes and hyperlipidemia were randomly assigned into an intervention and control group in order to assess the effect of 20 ml apple vinegar per day using an 8-week parallel study. Fasting blood sugar (FBS), homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), homeostasis model assessment for b-cell function (HOMA-B), quantitative insulin sensitivity checks index (QUICKI), insulin, malondialdehyde (MDA), 2,20-Diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), homocysteine, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured at the beginning and end of the study. RESULTS The intervention with apple vinegar could significantly improve FBS (mean change: -10.16 ± 19.48 mg/dl, p = 0.006) and DPPH (mean change: 16.58 ± 11.56, p < 0.001) within intervention group and in comparison with control group (p < 0.001). Additionally, the significant increase of MDA in control group (p < 0.05) caused a considerable difference between two groups. Glycemic indices containing insulin, HOMA-IR, HOMA-B, and QUICKI decrease significantly in both groups (p < 0.05). No considerable effect was observed on blood pressure and homocysteine in intervention group as well as control group. CONCLUSION This trial provided some evidences that apple vinegar consumption may cause beneficial effects on glycemic indices and oxidative stress in individuals with diabetes and dyslipidemia. This randomized clinical trial was registered in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (https://www.irct.ir/) as 2013070710826N5.

Abstract
Fruit vinegars are popular condiments worldwide. Antioxidants and organic acids are two important components of the flavors and health benefits of fruit vinegars. This study aimed to test the antioxidant activities, phenolic profiles, and organic acid contents of 23 fruit vinegars. The results found that the 23 fruit vinegars varied in ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP, 0.15⁻23.52 μmol Fe(II)/mL), Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC, 0.03⁻7.30 μmol Trolox/mL), total phenolic content (TPC, 29.64⁻3216.60 mg gallic acid equivalent/L), and total flavonoid content (TFC, 2.22⁻753.19 mg quercetin equivalent/L) values. Among the 23 fruit vinegars, the highest antioxidant activities were found in balsamic vinegar from Modena (Galletti), Aceto Balsamico di Modena (Monari Federzoni), red wine vinegar (Kühne), and red wine vinegar (Galletti). In addition, polyphenols and organic acids might be responsible for the antioxidant activities of fruit vinegars. The most widely detected phenolic compounds in fruit vinegars were gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and p-coumaric acid, with tartaric acid, malic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, and succinic acid the most widely distributed organic acids. Overall, fruit vinegars are rich in polyphenols and organic acids and can be a good dietary source of antioxidants.

Abstract
Substance P (SP) is believed to play a role in traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the inhibition of binding of SP to the tachykinin neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R) using NK1R antagonists had made favorable effects on TBI. Our current study addresses the functional roles and underlying mechanisms of SP and NK1R antagonist L-733,060 following TBI. Adult male wild type C57BL/6 J and SP knock out (SPKO) mice received a controlled cortical impact and outcome parameters were assessed. The results showed that TBI-induced motor and spatial memory deficits, lesion volume, brain water content and blood-brain barrier disruption were alleviated both in L-733,060-treated C57BL/6 J mice and vehicle-treated SPKO mice. L-733,060 treatment and SP deletion inhibited TBI-induced the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria to cytoplasm, activation of caspase-3, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. Higher SP levels in serum and cortex were observed in wild type mice undergoing TBI relative to wild type sham group, but very little expression of cortical SP was detected in the SP-/- mice either TBI or not. Upregulation of NK1R expression after TBI was observed, and there was no significant difference between wild type and SPKO groups. in vitro, L-733,060 and SP deletion inhibited scratch injury-induced cell death, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production following TBI. Together, the results of this study implicate a functional role for NK1-R antagonist L-733,060 and deletion of SP in TBI-induced neurological outcome, oxidative damage, neuroinflammation and cell death. Upregulation of NK1R maybe a consequence of TBI, independent of the levels of substance P. This study raises the possibility that targeting SP through its receptor NK1R or genetic deletion may have therapeutic efficacy in TBI.

Abstract
Background Ketamine can act as a multifunctional neuroprotective agent by inhibiting oxidative stress, cellular dysfunction, and apoptosis. Although it has been proven to be effective in various neurologic disorders, the mechanism of the treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective function of ketamine in models of TBI and the potential role of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway in this putative protective effect. Materials and methods Wild-type male mice were randomly assigned to five groups: Sham group, Sham + ketamine group, TBI group, TBI + vehicle group, and TBI + ketamine group. Marmarou’s weight drop model in mice was used to induce TBI, after which either ketamine or vehicle was administered via intraperitoneal injection. After 24 h, the brain samples were collected for analysis. Results Ketamine significantly ameliorated secondary brain injury induced by TBI, including neurological deficits, brain water content, and neuronal apoptosis. In addition, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were restored by the ketamine treatment. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry showed that ketamine significantly increased the level of Nrf2. Furthermore, administration of ketamine also induced the expression of Nrf2 pathway-related downstream factors, including hemeoxygenase-1 and quinine oxidoreductase-1, at the pre- and post-transcriptional levels. Conclusion Ketamine exhibits neuroprotective effects by attenuating oxidative stress and apoptosis after TBI. Therefore, ketamine could be an effective therapeutic agent for the treatment of TBI.
