Abstract
BACKGROUND Infected dentinal tubules are a possible source of bacteria that are responsible for the failure of root canal treatment. Therefore, disinfection of dentinal tubules by increasing the penetration of the irrigation solution is important for success in retreatment cases. This study utilized confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) to assess and compare the impact of XPR, ultrasonic irrigation (UI) and sonic activation (SA) on NaOCl penetration into dentinal tubules following endodontic retreatment. METHODS A total of forty mandibular premolars were enrolled in this investigation. Following root canal preparation up to ProTaper X3 file (30/0.07), root canals were obturated with gutta-percha and bioceramic root canal sealer with single cone technique. The root canal filling materials were removed using ProTaper nickel-titanium rotary retreatment files until the working length was reached. The retreatment procedure was finalized using the ProTaper Next X4 (40/0.06). The teeth were divided into four groups based on the irrigation activation technique: control (conventional needle irrigation), SA, UI and XPR. During the final irrigation procedure, Rhodamine B dye was introduced to 5% NaOCl for visualization via CLSM. Subsequent to image acquisition, the maximum penetration, penetration percentage, and penetration area were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman, and Bonferroni Dunn multiple comparison tests through R software (p < 0.05). RESULTS In the middle third, UI yielded a significantly higher penetration percentage than the control group (p < 0.05). The UI and XPR groups showed increased penetration percentages in the coronal and middle thirds compared with the apical third (P < 0.05). Maximum penetration was notably reduced in the apical third than in comparison with the coronal and middle thirds in all groups (p < 0.05). In the control, SA and XP groups, the penetration area was ranked in descending order as coronal, middle and apical (p < 0.05). Conversely, in the ultrasonic group, the penetration area was significantly lower in the apical third than in the middle and coronal thirds (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS UI enhanced the penetration percentage in the middle third of the root compared with that in the control group. XPR and SA showed no significant effect on NaOCl penetration following retreatment.

Abstract
Aim To compare the efficiency of root canal filling removal from oval-shaped root canals with high-energy Er:YAG laser and additional instrumentation with a rotary Ni-Ti XP-Endo Finisher R system. Materials and Methods The in vitro study was accomplished on 12 freshly extracted single-rooted mandibular incisors with one straight oval-shaped root canal, shaped with XP-Endo Shaper 30/.04 and obturated by using the warm vertical condensation technique subjected to further endodontic orthograde retreatment. Group 1: the first retreatment was carried out using a high-energy Er:YAG laser (n = 12). Group 2: the additional retreatment of the same specimens was performed with the XP-Endo Finisher-R system (n = 12). The effectiveness of the retreatment techniques was evaluated by a threefold micro-CT examination. The amount of the remaining root canal filling material was analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test and Friedman tests. Results A significant decrease in the quantity of the root canal filling was found following the first and after the second retreatment, compared to the initial values in all examined sections (P < 0.001). Within groups, additional application of the Ni-Ti system resulted in no significant removal of the filling materials (P > 0.05). Conclusions None of the systems resulted in complete root canal filling removal. Despite the improved results after the application of the supplementary retreatment protocol, none of the root canal walls were completely clean in the apical area. The high-energy Er:YAG laser and XP-Endo Finisher R rotary system can be successfully used in endodontic orthograde retreatment under relevant operating parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare the effect of different obturation techniques with root canal sealers on the residual filling material after retreatment using SEM. MATERIAL AND METHOD Sixty (60) single rooted mandibular premolars were selected and instrumented with rotary files using the Mtwo system up to file size 30/.05 taper. The samples were randomly divided to two groups based on the type of sealer and three sub-groups (n=10) based on the obturating technique used. The root fillings were removed using the PTUR system files and the specimens were longitudinally sectioned while digital images were obtained from the root canals with SEM. The time required to reach working lenght were recorded. RESULTS There was no difference in terms of the smear score when comparing both sealer and obturation technique groups in the apical third. Smear scores were significantly affected by the type of sealer and obturation technique in the medium and coronal thirds of root canals (p<0.05). Higher smear scores were obtained with GFB than AH Plus (p<0.05). The time required to reach working length with GFB was longer than AH Plus (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Residual filling material was observed in all samples, regardless of the root canal sealer or the obturation technique used. There was a significantly lower smear scores in the AH Plus groups as compared to the GFB.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to perform an integrative review to identify the most effective supplementary protocols used after filling material (FM) removal and root canal reinstrumentation, during endodontic reintervention. The literature search was performed on the electronic databases PubMed and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), using a combination of specific scientific descriptors. Selection criteria accepted articles published in English, Spanish and Portuguese languages, up to August 2021, involving in vitro and ex vivo studies. After applying the eligibility criteria, 46 articles were included for qualitative analysis. The tool for qualitative analysis of quasi-experimental studies of the Joanna Briggs Institute was used to determine the risk of bias of the included articles. The selected articles provided important data regarding the following supplementary protocols: sonic and ultrasonic activation of the irrigating solution; the use of ultrasonic inserts, XP-endo system instruments, and photon-induced photoacoustic streaming for mechanical debridement; and new devices as GentleWave system, and the self-adjusting file. Overall, all supplementary protocols demonstrated efficacy in removing the remaining FM. The implementation of various supplementary protocols can effectively remove the remaining FM from the root canal walls, although complete removal is not always achieved. However, it was not possible to determine the most effective protocol. Conversely, their association can enhance remaining FM removal. Remaining FM attached to root canal walls hinders proper chemical-mechanical preparation during endodontic reintervention. Supplementary protocols optimize the remaining FM removal, enhancing cleaning and disinfection of root canal.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine whether erbium laser irradiation emitted by modified glass-fiber tips would improve the intraradicular bonding of fiber posts. Forty human canines were endodontically treated and prepared for fiber-post placement. Roots were divided into five groups (n=8); according to the laser-tip combinations (2,940 nm Er:YAG and 2,780 nm Er,Cr:YSGG). Non-irradiated root canals served as control. Posts were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement and subjected to push-out test. Failure modes were characterized, and intraradicular bonded interfaces were analyzed by SEM and submitted to nanoleakage evaluation. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). No significant differences were observed in cervical and middle sections (p>0.05), while significantly higher bond strengths were observed in apical sections (p<0.05). Laser irradiation reduced adhesive failures, cement-dentin gap formation, and nanoleakage apically. Laser-irradiation protocols employing end- or radial-firing tips improved bonding to apical intraradicular dentin contributing to more uniform bonded interfaces.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS), XP-endo Finisher (XPF), and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) for the removal of root canal filling materials from oval root canals. Background: Various adjunctive irrigation techniques following mechanical preparation have been applied to enhance removal of fillings during root canal retreatment. However, whether there is superiority of one approach over others remains controversial. Methods: Thirty extracted single-rooted teeth with oval-shaped canals were instrumented with the ProTaper Next (PTN) system and obturated with the warm vertical compaction technique. After storage at 37°C for 1 month, retreatment was performed with the PTN system up to size X4. The teeth were then randomly assigned into three groups (n = 10) that were, respectively, subjected to supplementary irrigation with different protocols: PIPS, PUI, and XPF, followed by measurement of filling material volumes using high-resolution micro-computed tomography. Results: The PTN preparation resulted in significant reductions in residual filling materials (p < 0.05), whereas PIPS, PUI, and XPF moderately improved the removal of the remnants (p > 0.05). The residual filling materials after supplementary irrigation ranged from 0.384 ± 0.181 to 0.421 ± 0.143 mm3 in oval canals. There was no significant difference in the effectiveness among the PIPS, PUI, and XPF approaches (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Mechanical preparations are useful for removing most root fillings during retreatment in oval-shaped canals. PIPS can reduce residual root-filling materials to the similar extent as PUI and XPF.

Abstract
This study sought to evaluate the efficacy of SWEEPS in the removal of epoxy-resin-based and calcium-silicate-containing endodontic sealer combined with single-cone and carrier-based obturation techniques through a micro-CT analysis. Seventy-six single-rooted extracted human teeth with single root canal were instrumented with Reciproc instruments. Specimens were randomly divided into four groups (n = 19) according to the root canal filling material and obturation technique: (1) AH Plus sealer + Reciproc gutta-percha, (2) TotalFill BC sealer + TotalFill BC Points, (3) AH Plus sealer + Guttafusion obturator, and (4) MTA Fillapex + Guttafusion obturator. All specimens were re-treated one week later using Reciproc instruments. Following re-treatment, root canals were additionally irrigated using the Auto SWEEPS modality. The differences in the root canal filling remnants were analyzed by micro-CT scanning of each tooth after root canal obturation, after re-treatment, and after additional SWEEPS treatment. Statistical analysis was performed using an analysis of variance (p < 0.05). The additional treatment with SWEEPS significantly reduced the volume of the root canal filling materials in all experimental groups compared to the removal of root canal filling using only reciprocating instruments (p < 0.05). However, the root canal filling was not removed completely from any of the samples. SWEEPS can be used to enhance the removal of both epoxy-resin-based and calcium-silicate-containing sealers, in combination with single-cone and carrier-based obturation techniques.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to compare the antibacterial effectiveness of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), Er,Cr:YSGG laser (WTL), and photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) using an Er:YAG laser against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms in the apical third of root canals. METHODS Root canals of 70 single-rooted human teeth were instrumented and infected with E. faecalis for 3 weeks to form biofilms. The samples were randomly divided into five groups as follows: (i) PUI + 3% NaOCl (n = 16); (ii) Er,Cr:YSGG laser (n = 16); (iii) PIPS + 3% NaOCl (n = 16); (iv) positive control group (n = 10); and (v) negative control group (n = 10). The bacterial content in the root canal was sampled using (a) the paper-point sampling method before (S1) and after (S2) treatment and (b) pulverising the apical 5 mm of the root. The number of bacteria recovered from each group was counted as colony-forming units (CFUs). The amount of reduction between the groups was compared with the Kruskal-Wallis test and post-test Dunn's multiple comparisons tests. The significance level was set at 5% (p < 0.05). RESULTS The samples from the paper-point sampling method showed that the amount of bacteria before (S1) and after treatment (S2) was significantly different between PIPS and WTL, as well as between the PUI and WTL groups. In contrast, no significant difference was found between the PIPS and PUI groups. From the pulverised samples, the results indicated no significant difference among all experimental groups in the amount of bacterial reduction in the apical 5 mm of the root. CONCLUSIONS PUI and PIPS showed a significantly greater reduction in bacterial content within the main root canal compared with the WTL. There was no difference among all experimental groups in the apical third of the root.

Abstract
The objective of the present in vitro work was to investigate the effectiveness and time required for the removal of calcium silicate-based sealer using two rotary retreatment systems. Sixty extracted, single-canal, lower premolars were used. After obturation using the single-cone technique with calcium silicate-based sealer, samples were divided into four groups according to the technique of desobturation: Group 1 (G1): D-Race; Group 2 (G2): D-Race followed by the use of XP-Endo Finisher R; Group 3 (G3): Protaper Universal Retreatment; and Group 4 (G4): Protaper Universal Retreatment followed by the use of XP-Endo Finisher R. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were used to calculate the remaining filling materials at the middle and apical thirds. Times required to perform each method were recorded. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and digital microscopy were used to evaluate the remaining filling materials. Data were statistically analyzed using the t-test and one way ANOVA on ranks tests. No statistically significant difference was found between G1 and G3 after CBCT observations (p > 0.05). Xp-Endo Finisher R significantly increased the ability to remove materials regardless of the initially used retreatment system (p < 0.05). Statistically significant longer time was found in G3 and G4 compared to G1 and G2, respectively (p < 0.05), to reach the full working length. No retreatment system was able to totally remove the calcium silicate-based sealer from the root canal at the middle and apical thirds (p > 0.05). Digital microscopy demonstrated that the residual materials were the remaining sealers on the canal walls. SEM showed the mineral depositions of calcium silicate materials onto the canal walls and into the dentinal tubules. However, that calcium silicate materials provide mineral deposition into the dentinal tubules might indicate that the traditional irrigants could not be sufficient to remove calcium silicate-based materials from the root canal, and other agents should be used to make retreatment considerably easier.

Abstract
The removal of filling material is important for successful root canal retreatment. The aim of the study was to compare the efficiency of two activated irrigation techniques, the shock wave-enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS) mode of the Er:YAG laser and ultrasonically activated irrigation (UAI) and a conventional syringe-needle technique (SNI), in the removal of bioceramic sealer/gutta-percha during conventional retreatment in oval root canals. The study sample consisted of distal root canals of 42 extracted human mandibular molars, which were prepared using a ProTaper Next system up to size 40/0.06 and filled with bioceramic sealer using a single-cone obturation technique. The teeth were then re-treated with a Reciproc Blue RB40 file and 3% sodium hypochlorite solution. The prepared teeth were randomly divided into three groups (n = 14 per group) and subjected to one of the three irrigation methods. Micro-CT scans were performed at different stages to assess the amount of filling material after each retreatment phase. The results of the study showed that all the tested irrigation techniques reduced a statistically significant amount of the remnant filling material at retreatment (p < 0.05), and there were no statistically significant differences in efficacy between the three methods. All tested techniques had similar efficacy in the removal of the remaining filling remnants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) and super short pulse (SSP) and shock wave-enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS) modes of Er:YAG laser-activated irrigation (LAI) with two different laser tips, in removing filling remnants after conventional retreatment in severely curved root canals. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study sample consisted of 40 extracted molars with curved mesiobuccal root canals. The canals were instrumented with ProTaper Next and filled with an epoxy resin-based sealer and gutta-percha using continuous wave vertical compaction and warm injection back-filling. After retreatment with ProTaper Universal Retreatment system and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), all samples were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10) according to the final irrigation technique: PUI, LAI/SSP, SWEEPS/flat-tip, and SWEEPS/radial-tip, using 6 mL of 3% NaOCl for an activation time of 3 × 30 s. The samples were subjected to micro-CT scans after root canal filling, retreatment, and final irrigation. The filling material volume and percentage reduction were calculated. RESULTS All tested irrigation techniques were successful in the elimination of the filling remnants after the retreatment (p < 0.001). The LAI/SSP group showed a higher reduction rate than the SWEEPS/flat-tip group (p = 0.032). No significant differences were found between the other groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION All tested techniques improved the removal of filling material during retreatment in curved canals. LAI/SSP showed slightly better results than other techniques. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The study highlights the need for additional activated irrigation after the retreatment of curved root canals. The choice between PUI and LAI is not decisive for success.

Abstract
Background The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of different irrigation and irrigant activation system used as an adjuvant to retreatment rotary files in removal of gutta-percha and sealer from endodontic retreatment using Micro-CT. Method 64 extracted permanent maxillary central incisor teeth with single canal, were collected and decoronated to standard length of 16 mm. Instrumentation was done using rotary files and obturation was performed using GuttaCore and AH plus sealer. After setting of sealer, initial removal of filling material was performed using ProTaper universal retreatment files (D1, D2, D3). All 64 sample were randomised into four groups (n = 16) Group1: Endodontic syringe irrigation, Group 2: Passive Ultasonic Irrigation (PUI), Group 3: EndoActivator, and Group 4: EndoVac. Micro-CT scanning was performed after obturation, initial removal of filling material by retreatment file and after using experimental protocols of each group, and volume of remaining filling material was calculated using Dolphin software. Statistical analysis performed with one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc. Results A significant reduction in the volume of residual obturation material were found between each group. PUI was superior to the sonic (EndoActivator), negative pressure irrigation technique (EndoVac) and positive pressure irrigation at the coronal, middle third and apical third of the root canal. However, none of the supplementary techniques were able to completely remove the residual obturation material. Conclusion PUI and EndoActivator were found better in remaining filling material removal, demonstrating clinically useful as supplementary technique in removing remaining obturation material during endodontic retreatment.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Endostar REvision system (Poldent, Warsaw, Poland) in the removal of filling materials from oval root canals using sonic irrigation as an additional cleaning method. Thirty human-extracted mandibular premolars with oval canals were prepared using the ProTaper Universal system (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) up to instrument F1 (20/.07), and then filled by the continuous wave vertical compaction technique using pulp canal sealer EWT (Sybron Dental Specialties, Orange, CA, USA). The teeth were randomly divided into two groups (n = 15) according to the instrumentation system and the additional cleaning method, as follows: REvision (30/.08, 25/.06) with EQ-S sonic activation (Meta Biomed, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea), REvision (30/.08, 25/.06) without additional activation. All specimens were sectioned longitudinally at 3 and 7 mm from the apex, and analyzed using digital microscopy (KEYENCE, Osaka, Japan) to measure the total area of the residual obturation materials, followed by SEM analysis. The data on the percentage of remaining filling material were analyzed by Kruskal−Wallis one-way Analysis of Variance on ranks. None of the retreatment protocols completely removed the filling material from the root canals (p > 0.05); the retreatment technique using sonic activation showed statistically less residual filling materials than the retreatment technique using irrigants without activation at the coronal third (p < 0.05), whilst no significant difference was found between both tested groups at the apical and middle thirds (p > 0.05). The REvision system showed promising results in the removal of filling materials from oval canals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To ensure a successful endodontic treatment, it is important to have a proper disinfection of the root canal. The current study compares the root canal cleanliness and smear layer score between sonic and ultrasonic activation. METHOD Systematic literature review was implemented, using 12 databases. All in vitro studies comparing the efficacy of sonic and ultrasonic activation and reporting at least one outcome of interest were included. RESULTS At the apical level, pooling the data in the random-effects model (I2=64%, p = .1) revealed a statistically significant lower smear layer score within the sonic activation group (MD-0.48; 95% CI-0.92, -0.04; p = .03). Furthermore, there was a statistically significant lower push-out bond strength value among the sonic group, in contrast to the ultrasonic group at the middle (MD-0.69; 95% CI-1.13, -0.25; p = .002) and at the apical levels (MD-0.78; 95% CI-1.09, -0.46; p < .0001) of the root canal. CONCLUSIONS Sonic activation accomplished advancement relative to ultrasonic agitation in removing the smear layer, while ultrasonic activation resulted in significant cohesion between the sealers and the dentine tubules, decreasing the vulnerability of apical leakage and tooth fracture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, the concept of minimally invasive endodontics has been proposed, which could be described as preventing or treating diseases by preserving more dental tissue and creating minimal damage. In the process of root canal preparation, it was recommended to use instruments with a smaller taper to preserve more tooth tissue and improve the preservation rate of the affected teeth. Photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) was a new type of laser-activated irrigation technology, which was now widely used in endodontic treatment. The purpose of this article was to evaluate the bactericidal effect of PIPS with NaOCl in root canals with different widths or tapers. METHODS Twenty-three maxillary first molars with three independent root canals were included in this study. The mesiobuccal (MB), distobuccal (DB), and palatal (P) root canals were prepared at sizes of #10/.02, #25/.02, and #25/.06, respectively. After being incubated with a bacterial suspension for 4 weeks, the specimen were irrigated with 2% NaOCl activated by conventional needle irrigation (CNI) (n = 10) or PIPS (n = 10). Three specimen were not treated (control group). Before and after irrigation, the presence of bacteria was assessed with an adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) assay kit and biofilms were assessed using confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS In specimen prepared using PIPS irrigation, the ATP was reduced by more than 98%. When the root canal taper was 0.02, the size #25 root canals had a higher percentage of dead bacteria than the size #10 root canals in all regions (P < 0.05) in the PIPS group. When the root canal width was #25, the 0.02 taper group had a higher percentage of dead bacteria than the 0.06 taper group in the apical region (P < 0.05), except coronal and middle regions (P > 0.05). PIPS irrigation results in a greater percentage of dead bacteria and reduction of ATP in size #10/.02 root canals than CNI in size #25/.06 root canals in three regions (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Increasing the width from #10 to #25 improves the bactericidal effect of PIPS in the root canal. Increasing the taper of the root canal from 0.02 to 0.06 at size #25 did not affect the bactericidal effects of PIPS. PIPS resulted in more dead bacteria in specimen with smaller tapers and root canal widths than CNI. PIPS can be used to clean the smear layer in the coronal region and open the dentin tubules. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Activation of irrigants with PIPS brought about significant bacterial reduction smaller tapers and width root canals compared to CNI, which was beneficial to prevent excessive loss of tooth tissue and conserve the structural integrity of teeth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the voids percentage and the retreatability by different supplementary irrigation techniques of a matched-taper single cone and epoxy resin-based sealer. METHODS A total of 72 single-rooted premolars were prepared and filled with gutta-percha and MM-Seal. The percentage of voids in the whole root canal and each anatomical part were evaluated by Micro-CT scans. After root filling removal, the teeth were randomly allocated (n=24) to group A, syringe irrigation; group B, Tornado Brush and group C, ultrasonically activated irrigation and rescanned to establish the volume of remnant root filling material. The data relative to voids and retreatment techniques were established by Kruskal-Wallis test. Differences in retreatment time were examined using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (P< .05). RESULTS No significant difference was found in the voids percentage between the different root-thirds and between the supplementary irrigation groups in the MM-Seal remnants for the whole root canal and each section. In all groups, the coronal region exhibited more remaining material than other sections. CONCLUSIONS MM-Seal showed low voids percentage and its removal was not significantly improved by supplementary irrigation techniques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Er:YAG laser-initiated shockwave-enhanced emission of photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS®) and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) combining thymol-based solvent or sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in the removal of filling remnants from curved canals. METHODS Forty-eight curved root canals were instrumented and filled with an epoxy-resin-based sealer and gutta-percha. The canals were retreated with a Wave One Gold primary file (tip size 25; variable taper) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). After the retreatment, the samples were randomly divided into four groups according to the additional irrigation protocol: PUI/NaOCl, PUI/solvent, SWEEPS®/NaOCl or SWEEPS®/solvent. The volume of filling material in root canal was measured after root canal filling, after mechanical retreatment, after final irrigation protocol and after additional irrigation protocol, using micro-CT. The results were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test with the post-hoc Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon test (α=0.05). RESULTS In the PUI group, irrigation with the solvent or NaOCl resulted in similar filling reduction (p = 0.224). In the SWEEPS® group, irrigation with NaOCl resulted in a significantly greater filling reduction compared to the solvent (p = 0.021). The SWEEPS®/NaOCl group was more effective than the PUI/NaOCl group (p = 0.008). No significant differences were found between PUI/solvent and SWEEPS® groups (p>0.05) and PUI/NaOCl and SWEEPS®/solvent group (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Although all tested protocols improved the removal of filling remnants from curved root canal, the SWEEPS® was more successful than PUI when NaOCl was used. Both tested techniques showed similar efficacy when in combination with the solvent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the efficiency of endodontic retreatment using different instruments and observe whether the Nd:YAP laser can assist. METHODS Eighty premolars were selected, of which the root canals were prepared, and were filled with both gutta-percha and AH plus. The teeth were randomly divided into eight groups, respectively using and not using the Nd:YAP laser with the use of H files, Reciproc files, Mtwo R files, and Mtwo R + H files to remove the root-canal filling material. The retreatment time of each sample was recorded, and the amount of residual gutta-percha was calculated by Image J. RESULTS (I) In the four no-Nd:YAP laser groups, the Mtwo R group and Reciproc group took the least time, and there was no statistical difference between them (P>0.05). The Mtwo R + H file group took longer than the Mtwo R group and Reciproc group (P<0.05). The H file group took the longest time (P<0.05). (II) In the Nd:YAP laser group, the H file group took the longest time (P<0.05), and there were no significant statistical difference between the other three groups (P>0.05). (III) The Nd:YAP laser groups took a longer time than the no-Nd:YAP laser groups (P<0.05). (IV) All of the groups had residues. (V) The residues in the Mtwo R + H files group and the Reciproc group were the least among the four groups (P<0.05), and the residues in the Mtwo R group were the most (P<0.05). (VI) The residues in the Mtwo R and H file groups of the Nd:YAP laser groups were less than those of the no-Nd:YAP laser groups (P<0.05), and the residues in the Reciproc and the Mtwo R + H file groups of the Nd:YAP laser group showed no statistical difference with that of the no-Nd:YAP laser group (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS None of the experimental methods could altogether remove the root-filling material. The Nd:YAP laser could assist, but the procedure still took a long time and the efficiency of endodontic retreatment was limited. Using the Mtwo R + H or Reciproc file was the most efficient.

Abstract
Tricalcium silicate-based sealers have been usually indicated for the single-cone technique and result in more residual filling materials in root canal retreatment. Passive ultrasonic irrigation and photon-initiated photoacoustic streaming have been reported to improve the removal efficacy of root canal filling materials. However, the abilities of both techniques combined with NiTi re-instrumentation to remove residual tricalcium silicate-based sealer and gutta-percha have not been compared. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of laser-activated and ultrasonic-activated techniques in vitro for the removal of the tricalcium silicate-based sealer iRoot SP and gutta-percha after standard canal retreatment procedures with the use of nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments.

Abstract
This review was designed to analyse whether the supplementary use of XP-Endo Finisher and XP-Endo Finisher R contributes to the removal of root canal filling materials. Databases were searched up to November 2020. Studies were critically assessed according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Risk of bias evaluation was performed. Pooled standardised mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Ten studies involving 192 teeth were eligible for systematic review and meta-analysis could be performed with eight of these studies. Strong evidence showed that XP-Endo Finisher R file contributed significantly to filling material removal from root canals (SMD (95% CI): 0.41 (0.06-0.76)). Although the evidence was conflicting, XP-Endo Finisher R file was superior than other irrigant activation techniques (SMD (95% CI): 0.47 (0.02-0.93)). The supplementary use of XP-Endo Finisher and XP-Endo Finisher R is beneficial in further removal of root canal filling materials from root canal system.

Abstract
Background Wettability of root canal sealers to the root canal wall plays a significant role in the attainment of a fluid-tight seal. Aims This study aimed to evaluate and compare the wettability of three different root canal sealers on the root canal walls after three different irrigant activation techniques using the contact angle meter. Subjects and Methods Thirty-six single-rooted mandibular premolars after decoronation and cleaning and shaping up to size #35 were randomly divided into three groups with 12 samples in each group (n = 12) based on the different activation techniques: Group I (passive irrigation with side-vented needle), Group II (manual dynamic agitation), and Group III (passive ultrasonic irrigation). Root segments were split longitudinally and were subdivided into three subgroups based on the root canal sealers tested with four samples in each subgroup (n = 4): Subgroup A (Tubliseal EWT), Subgroup B (AH Plus), and Subgroup C (Endosequence BC sealer). A controlled volume droplet of sealer was placed on each specimen and was subjected to the contact angle meter. Statistical Analysis Data were statistically analyzed using the one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test at a significance level of 0.05 (P < 0.05). Results A statistically significant difference was seen among all the groups and subgroups with the highest contact angle value for Group III and Subgroup C and the least value for Group I and Subgroup A. Conclusions Passive irrigation with side-vented needle and Tubli-Seal EWT showed better wettability on dentin.

Abstract
Background and objectives: The complete removal of obturation material can be a challenge in nonsurgical root canal retreatment. The insufficient removal of obturation material is a reason for root canal retreatment failure. Materials and Methods: The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of different final root canal irrigation activation methods in removing debris and smear layers in the apical and middle portions of root canals during retreatment. Sixty-six distal roots of freshly extracted molars were randomly divided into six groups: (1) primary root canal treatment with no obturation (negative control); (2) retreatment with only conventional instrumentation and irrigation (positive control); (3) retreatment with additional ultrasonic irrigation using the Piezon Master 700; (4) ultrasonic irrigation with the ENDOSONIC Blue; (5) sonic irrigation with the EDDY; and (6) multisonic irrigation with the GentleWave system. Roots were split and prepared for scanning electron microscopic (SEM) evaluation. Acquired images were assessed to quantify the amount of debris and smear remaining. Results: Among the treatment groups, Group 6 had a significantly lower debris score than Group 2 (positive control) in both the middle and apical regions (p = 0.004, p = 0.012). All treatment groups showed significantly lower smear scores than Group 2 in the middle and apical regions (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The GentleWave multisonic System showed a more optimal cleaning efficacy of the root canal debris but did not differ significantly with the tested passive ultrasonic or sonic irrigation method.

Abstract
Background/purpose Laser-activated root canal irrigation (LAI) with an Er:YAG laser is considered more effective than other irrigation methods, whereas the effectiveness of LAI in cleaning lateral canals far from the laser tip remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of removing calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] paste from lateral canals using LAI or ultrasonic-activated irrigation (UAI), and to examine the effect of tip insertion depth and laser irradiation parameters on cleaning efficacy. Materials and methods Radiopaque Ca(OH)2 paste (Calcipex II) was injected into lateral canals 6 mm from the root apex in 192 J-shaped simulated root canal models. LAI (Erwin AdvErl; 30 or 70 mJ; 10 or 20 pulses per second; laser tip R200T or R600T) and UAI (ENAC SE10; output setting: 3) were performed 3 times for 20 s. The laser tip was placed at 8–0 mm coronal to the lateral canal location. The volume of Ca(OH)2 paste before and after the experiment was measured using micro-CT (SMX-100CT). Results The Ca(OH)2 removal rate by LAI was significantly higher than UAI at all tip insertion depths. Ca(OH)2 removal rate in LAI was significantly lower at the 8 mm position compared with other positions (P < 0.05). When the tip insertion depth was fixed at this position, Ca(OH)2 removal rate increased significantly when pulse energy and tip diameter were increased (P < 0.05). Conclusion LAI removed Ca(OH)2 paste from lateral canals away from the tip more effectively than UAI. Increasing the pulse energy and tip diameter improved the removal efficiency.

Comparison of the Self-Adjusting File and Hedström File Used as Supplementary Instruments for the Remaining Filling Material Removal During Retreatment of C-Shaped Canals: A Micro-CT Study. Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of Self-adjusting file (SAF) system and Hedström (H) file for removing remaining filling material (RFM) from C-shaped canals. Methods: 20 C-shaped mandibular second molars with C1 configurations were instrumented, filled with tagger´s hybrid technique. Samples were divided into 2 groups (n=10). Reciproc R25 and a Mtwo 35/04 file were used for retreatment in both groups. Then, a 2.0 SAF file (group I) and a #35 H file (group II) were used as supplementary steps for RFM removal. Micro-CT scanning was performed after every procedure. Total volumes were calculated and converted into percentages. Also, the minimum wall thickness at 3, 5, 7 mm from apex was calculated. The Prism 7.0 software was used as the analytical tool with a significance of 5%. Results: Initial obturation removal was approximately 64% in group I and 67% in Group II. The apical third had the highest values of RFM. The use of a H file significantly reduced the RFM compared to SAF in the total canal length respectively (30% vs 18%) and at 1-3 mm and 3-6 mm when compared to the use of SAF. A statistically significant decrease of RFM and minimum wall thickness were observed in both groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: None of the retreatment techniques completely removed RFM. The apical region was the more unaffected area. Also, the SAF file was less effective than the H file in removing the RFM. Although C-shaped canals possesses thinner dentinal wall thickness, no excessive dentine removal was observed after each instrument use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nonsurgical endodontic retreatment continues to be a challenge in endodontics, particularly when dealing with a complex tooth anatomy. This study evaluated the efficacy of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) and the GentleWave system as supplementary techniques to remove remaining filling materials from oval-shaped root canals. METHODS Twenty distal roots of human mandibular molars with single and oval-shaped canals were shaped with R40 (40.06) instrument and filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer using warm vertical obturation. Initial filling material removal was performed with R50 (50.05) instrument, followed by the use of PUI (n = 10) or GentleWave system (n = 10). Micro-computed tomographic images were obtained after obturation, initial material removal, and after the use of PUI and GentleWave. The volume of remaining filling material was calculated for the entire canal as well as for the coronal, middle, and apical thirds. Statistical analyses were performed by using analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. P ≤ .05 was considered significant. RESULTS The use of PUI and GentleWave as supplementary techniques significantly reduced the volume of remaining filling material after initial instrumentation (P < .05). However, none of these techniques was able to render canals free from filling materials. PUI showed better performance by removing 18% of the remaining filling material, whereas the GentleWave system was able to remove approximately 10% (P = .02). CONCLUSIONS The use of supplementary techniques optimized filling material removal after initial instrumentation. PUI enhanced the overall cleaning of the root canal system during endodontic retreatment in oval-shaped canals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of supplementary techniques (ultrasonic tip/XP-endo Finisher R) in removing remaining filling materials (gutta-percha/AHPlus/BCSealer) from oval-shaped root canals during non-surgical endodontic retreatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-eight distal roots of human mandibular molars with single and oval-shaped canals were initially shaped with a R40 instrument and filled with gutta-percha points and AH Plus (n = 14) or BC Sealer (n = 14) followed by an initial micro-CT scanning. Initial filling material removal was performed in all 28 samples with an R50 instrument, and all samples submitted to a second micro-CT. Supplementary techniques with ultrasonic tips or XP-endo Finisher R instruments were performed in each sealer group, and all samples submitted to a third micro-CT. The volume of remaining filling material was calculated for the entire canal as well as for the coronal, middle, and apical thirds. Statistical analyses were performed using T, ANOVA 3-way, and Tukey tests. RESULTS Lower values of remnant filling material were found for BC Sealer (16.06 ± 14.34) compared to AH Plus (28.30 ± 10.54) (P < 0.001), and considering the supplementary technique, lower values of remnant filling material were found for the ultrasonic tip (18.95 ± 11.05) compared to XP-endo Finisher R (25.41 ± 15.81) (P = 0.025). Ultrasonic instruments significantly reduced the percentage of remaining filling material for both AH Plus (P = 0.04) and BC Sealer (P = 0.02) while XP-endo Finisher R was effective for AHPlus only (P = 0.04). The remaining filling material was observed in all samples regardless the filling material or the supplementary technique employed. CONCLUSIONS Supplementary techniques increased filling material removal; however, none of them was able to render root canals completely free from root fillings. Ultrasonic tips should be considered a good option for endodontic retreatment, especially for bioceramic cases. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Supplementary instrumentation techniques are effective tools to reduce the amount of filling materials during root canal retreatment.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic cleaning of the intracanal post space on the bond strength of fiber posts in oval canals filled with a premixed bioceramic (Bio-C Sealer [BIOC]) root canal sealer. Materials and Methods Fifty premolars were endodontically prepared and divided into 5 groups (n = 10), based on the type of root canal filling material used and the post space cleaning protocol. A1: gutta-percha + AH Plus (AHP) and post space preparation with ultrasonic cleaning, A2: gutta-percha + BIOC and post space preparation with ultrasonic cleaning, B1: gutta-percha + AHP and post space preparation, B2: gutta-percha + BIOC and post space preparation, C: control group. Fiber posts were cemented with a self-adhesive luting material, and 1 mm thick slices were sectioned from the middle and cervical third to evaluate the remaining filling material microscopically. The samples were subjected to a push-out test to analyze the bond strength of the fiber post, and the results were analyzed with the Shapiro-Wilk, Bonferroni, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.05). Failure modes were evaluated using optical microscopy. Results The results showed that the fiber posts cemented in canals sealed with BIOC had lower bond strength than those sealed with AHP. The ultrasonic cleaning of the post space improved the bond strength of fiber posts in canals sealed with AHP, but not with BIOC. Conclusions BIOC decreased the bond strength of fiber posts in oval canals, regardless of ultrasonic cleaning.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of HyFlex EDM (Coltene/Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland) and ProTaper Universal Retreatment Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) Systems [The ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTR), Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland] in the removal of the root canal filling materials with or without laser activated irrigation. Materials and methods: The root canals of 60 human mandibular premolars were instrumented with K files up to size 35 at a working length; the step-back procedure was performed in 1 mm increments up to size 50. Next, the teeth were obturated using the lateral compaction technique with gutta-percha and resin-based sealer, and they were randomly divided into two groups (n = 30) according to the retreatment systems: PTR and HyFlex EDM NiTi rotary files. Then, each group was divided into two subgroups (n = 15), laser [photon-induced photo-acoustic streaming (PIPS); Fotona, Ljubljana, Slovenia] activated irrigation and conventional needle irrigation group. Following these procedures, the specimens were evaluated using micro-computed tomography. Results: There was no significant difference between the instrumentation systems regarding the cleaning efficacy (χ2 = 0.754; p = 0.86). Additionally, PIPS method did not have a significant effect on the removal of the filling material compared to conventional needle irrigation. Conclusions: Both instrumentation systems were effective in removing the filling material, but neither was able to remove the filling material completely. PIPS method did not show a significant additional effect regarding the removal of filling material.

Abstract
AIM To compare two preparation systems and two sonic irrigation devices during the removal of root filling material from oval distal canals of extracted mandibular molars. METHODOLOGY The distal canals in 40 extracted mandibular molars were shaped using the ProTaper Next system (Dentslpy Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), filled with Gutta Percha X2 (Dentsply Sirona), along with AH Plus sealer (Dentsply De Trey, Konstanz, Germany) and randomly divided into two groups (n = 20) according to volume of initial filling, preparation diameter and working length. One group was retreated using the Reciproc system (VDW, Munich, Germany), and the other using the 2Shape system (Micro-Mega, Besançon, France). A micro-CT scan was taken after the initial root filling and after retreatment to evaluate the volume of filling material remnants. The teeth were divided into four groups to test the supplementary effect of two sonic irrigation devices on removing filling material: Eddy (VDW) and MM1500 (Micro-Mega). In the first and second groups, 2Shape was followed subsequently by MM1500 and Eddy; in the third and fourth groups, Reciproc was followed by MM1500 and Eddy. A third micro-CT was taken to compare the remaining root filling material in all groups. Wilcoxon's signed rank tests, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS No significant difference was found for the volume of filling material removed between the Reciproc and 2Shape in the entire canal (P = 0.355). The volume dropped significantly from its initial value after removing the bulk of the root filling by 95.8% (from 4.71 to 0.22 mm3 ) with the 2Shape (P < 0.001) and by 94.0% (from 5.05 to 0.33 mm3 ) with the Reciproc (P < 0.001). Sonic activation significantly decreased the residual volume of filling material remnants by 3.21% (P = 0.013) in the first group, 1.38% (P = 0.012) in the second group, 1.83% (P = 0.008) in the third group and 1.83% (P = 0.012) in the fourth group. At the end, the percentage of residual material was not significantly different among the groups in the entire canal (P = 0.163). CONCLUSION In the distal oval canals of extracted mandibular molar teeth, there was no significant difference between the 2Shape and Reciproc systems in removing gutta-percha/sealer. Sonic activation with MM1500 and Eddy significantly improved filling material removal.

Abstract
Background. The present study aimed to test the efficacy of novel reciprocating systems in terms of gutta-percha removal of roots obturated with warm vertical compaction technique. Methods. Ninety straight rooted maxillary incisors were enlarged with hand files up to a # 50/02 apical size and obturated using warm vertical compaction technique. The specimens were divided into four groups according to system used for filling removal, as Reciproc Blue, Reciproc, WaveOne Gold and hand-instrumentation. The residual filling materials and time required for root canal removal were calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey tests with 5% significance threshold. Results. There were no significant differences among Reciproc, Reciproc Blue and WaveOne Gold (P > 0.05). Hand-instrumentation group left significantly greater root canal filling material (P < 0.05). The time required for root canal filling removal was significantly shorter in the Reciproc group followed by WaveOne Gold, Reciproc Blue and hand-instrumentation groups (P< 0.05). Conclusion. Efficacy of Reciproc Blue, WaveOne Gold and Reciproc instruments for root canal filling removal were similar and superior to hand-instrumentation.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the cleanliness of oval cross-sectioned root canals after using different supportive techniques for removal of root canal filling material as part of retreatment process. Methods: One hundred mandibular canine teeth with flat oval cross-sectioned canals were instrumented up to #40.06 and obturated using the warm vertical compaction technique. Removal of the gutta-percha and sealer was performed using the D-RaCe nickel-titanium retreatment instruments. The roots were randomly divided into four groups of 25 teeth, and the activation processes were applied: XP-endo Finisher (XP), EndoActivator (EA) and IrrıSafe (IS). Conventional needle irrigation (CI) was used as the control group. The teeth were sectioned, and digital images were captured. The photographs were analysed using AutoCAD software regarding the area of residual root filling. Kruskal–Wallis and post hoc Dunn’s tests were performed for statistical analysis. Results: There was significantly less gutta-percha and sealer remnant in the XP group than in the other groups (P<0.05). The CI group contained significantly more gutta-percha and sealer remnant than the other groups (P<0.05). The apical third of the CI group had significantly more residual gutta-percha and sealer when compared to that of the other groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the amount of gutta-percha and sealer in the XP group was lower than that in the EA, IS, and CI groups.
