Abstract
Astyanax is one of the most specious fish groups in the Neotropical region, with many cryptic species, which represents a challenge for correct identification through traditional taxonomic methods. Psalidodon is a recently resurrected genus group of species previously belonging to Astyanax, specifically those with extensive chromosomal variation of the A. scabripinnis and fasciatus complexes. In the present study, the mitochondrial genes cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI), mitochondrial ATP synthase 6 and 8 (ATPase 6/8), and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) were used in conjunction with chromosomal data to characterize molecularly and cytogenetically populations of Astyanax and Psalidodon from rivers and streams of the Ivaí River Basin (Paraná Basin). The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the integrative use of molecular and cytogenetic techniques, with the confirmation of at least three species for the sampled sites: A. lacustris, P. paranae, and P. fasciatus, which showed inter- and intrapopulation karyotype variations. In addition, extensive haplotypic variation can be observed for these species within the Ivaí River Basin and throughout the Paraná River Basin. The data demonstrate a hidden diversity among the species analyzed, enrich the ichthyofaunistic knowledge of small rivers and streams, and contribute to future conservation projects in these areas.

Abstract
Background The main cytogenetic studies of the Characidae family comprise the genera Astyanax and Psalidodon involving the use of repetitive DNA probes. However, for the microsatellite classes, studies are still scarce and the function of these sequences in the genome of these individuals is still not understood. Thus, we aimed to analyze and compare the distribution of microsatellite sequences in the species Astyanax bimaculatus and Psalidodon scabripinnis. Methods We collected biopsies from the fins of A. bimaculatus and P. scabripinnis to perform cell culture, followed by chromosome extraction, and mapped the distribution of 14 microsatellites by FISH in both species. Results and Discussion The diploid number observed for both species was 2n = 50, with an acrocentric B microchromosome in A. bimaculatus and a metacentric B chromosome in P. scabripinnis. Regarding FISH, 11 probes hybridized in the karyotype of A. bimaculatus mainly in centromeric regions, and 13 probes hybridized in P. scabripinnis, mainly in telomeric regions, in addition to a large accumulation of microsatellite hybridization on its B chromosome. Conclusion Comparative FISH mapping of 14 microsatellite motifs revealed different patterns of distribution both in autosomes and supernumerary chromosomes of A. bimaculatus and P. scabripinnis, suggesting independent evolutionary processes in each of these species, representing excellent data on chromosome rearrangements and cytotaxonomy.

Abstract
Although Astyanax bimaculatus is the most representative species of the genus in the Amazon region, there are no cytogenetic studies of A. bimaculatus species in Amazon region. Thus, we aimed to analyse the chromosome complements of specimens from this area using classic and molecular cytogenetic approaches. The results revealed the existence of a distinct cytotype and this is the first report of the occurrence of a B microchromosome in the species. Overall, these data indicate that the karyotypic evolution of this species is complex, involving the occurrence of chromosomal rearrangements.

Abstract
Psalidodon fasciatus is a complex of several fish species widely distributed in Brazilian hydrographic systems that share morphological characteristics and show a high taxonomic complexity and genetic variability. Cytogenetic and molecular analyses were carried out in populations from three Brazilian hydrographic basins, aiming to contribute to systematic and biogeographical knowledge of the group. The chromosomal markers verified the occurrence of species-specific characters and indicated the existence of six distinct operational taxonomic units (OTUs): P. fasciatus (São Francisco River basin), Psalidodon sp. 1, Psalidodon sp. 2 and Psalidodon eigenmanniorum (Uruguay River basin); and Psalidodon sp. 3 and Psalidodon sp. 4 (Paraná River basin). The chromosomal markers showed more similarities among species from the Uruguay River and São Francisco River basins. DNA barcoding analyses (assemble species by automatic partitioning, neighbour-joining, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony) indicated the existence of at least three distinct OTUs. The chromosomal evolution rates were demonstrated to be higher than the molecular evolution rates, reinforcing the importance of using chromosomal markers to delimit OTUs in integrative taxonomy studies. These results suggest that the São Francisco River Basin population (the type locality) should be considered as true P. fasciatus, and the others, until now treated as Psalidodon aff. fasciatus, are cryptic species.

Abstract
Abstract This study aimed to identify species of Astyanax bimaculatus group from four Itaipu Reservoir tributaries (Paraná River Basin) by cytogenetics and molecular markers (COI) to investigate the possible occurrence of cryptic diversity in part of this basin. The four populations showed only one karyotype formula and simple AgNORs. FISH with 18S rDNA probe showed a high variation, and 5S rDNA probes evidenced simple sites in most of the specimens, although multiple sites are present in two specimens. The variations of 5S and 18S cistrons generated 13 cytotypes. The molecular data did not reveal cryptic diversity in the populations; however, its grouping with 82 sequences from other stretches of the Paraná River Basin originated three haplogroups (distances of 3.12% and 8.82%) and 33 haplotypes were identified. DNA Barcode suggests that cytogenetic variations represent a high polymorphism degree, and it identified the analyzed specimens as Astyanax lacustris, which confirms the morphological identification. Our data suggest that the cryptic diversity of this group in the tributaries of the Paraná River Basin is different than the proposed by the synonymizations of A. altiparanae and A. asuncionensis to A. lacustris. This study reinforces the importance of integrative cytogenetics and molecular methods for taxonomy.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Moenkhausia is a highly specious genus among the Characidae, composed of 96 valid species. Only twelve species have a known karyotype. Thus, here are presented the first cytogenetic data of two allopatric populations of Moenkhausia bonita and one of M. forestii, both belonging to the upper Paraná River basin (PR) with discussion on the evolutionary and cytotaxonomic aspects of the genus. The two species presented 2n = 50 chromosomes but different karyotype formulas and occurrence of 1-2 B chromosomes. These elements are small metacentrics in M. bonita and small acrocentrics in M. forestii. In both species, B chromosomes were euchromatic. Ag-NOR sites were found in pair 3 (metacentric), coinciding with fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) by the 18S rDNA probe in both species. However, the species differed in terms of the number and position of 5S rDNA sites. Heterochromatic blocks, mapped in M. bonita showed the least amount of heterochromatin in the terminal and pericentromeric regions, while the M. forestii karyotype revealed a greater amount of interstitial heterochromatic blocks. The karyotype distinctions between the two species, including the morphology of B chromosomes, may contribute as a reference in the taxonomic studies in this group.

Abstract
Astyanax is a species-rich, non-monophyletic genus composed of several supraspecific taxa that are poorly delimited. The Astyanax fasciatus complex is one of these taxa and shows high taxonomic complexity. To elucidate the evolutionary history of the A. fasciatus complex from southern South America, we conducted cytogenetic, molecular and morphological analyses in specimens from the Uruguay River basin. Cytogenetic characters demonstrated two closely related operational taxonomic units: Astyanax sp. 1 (8m+22sm+10st+6a), Astyanax sp. 2 (8m+24sm+10st+4a) and natural hybrids (8m+23sm+8st+5a). 5S ribosomal DNA sites were found in two pairs of m chromosomes and one pair of a chromosomes in Astyanax sp. 1, two pairs of a chromosomes and one pair of m chromosomes in Astyanax sp. 2, and three m chromosomes and three a chromosomes in hybrids. As51 sites were found in three chromosomes in Astyanax sp. 1 and in five chromosomes in Astyanax sp. 2 and hybrids. Mitochondrial sequence analyses did not separate the two units and hybrids. Morphological analyses revealed differences between Astyanax sp. 2 and hybrids. This secondary contact with gene flow between lineages that diverged long ago might slow or reverse the differentiation/speciation process. These results help us to understand the evolutionary history of this highly complex clade of Astyanax in southern South America.

Abstract
Lebiasinidae is a small fish family composed by miniature to small-sized fishes with few cytogenetic data (most of them limited to descriptions of diploid chromosome numbers), thus preventing any evolutionary comparative studies at the chromosomal level. In the present study, we are providing, the first cytogenetic data for the red spotted tetra, Copeina guttata, including the standard karyotype, C-banding, repetitive DNA mapping by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), providing chromosomal patterns and novel insights into the karyotype differentiation of the family. Males and females share diploid chromosome number 2n = 42 and karyotype composed of 2 metacentric (m), 4 submetacentric (sm) and 36 subtelocentric to acrocentric (st-a) chromosomes. Blocks of constitutive heterochromatin were observed in the centromeric and interstitial regions of several chromosomes, in addition to a remarkably large distal block, heteromorphic in size, which fully corresponded with the 18S rDNA sites in the fourth chromosomal pair. This overlap was confirmed by 5S/18S rDNA dual-color FISH. On the other hand, 5S rDNA clusters were situated in the long and short arms of the 2nd and 15th pairs, respectively. No sex-linked karyotype differences were revealed by male/female CGH experiments. The genomic probes from other two lebiasinid species, Lebiasina melanoguttata and Pyrrhulina brevis, showed positive hybridization signals only in the NOR region in the genome of C. guttata. We demonstrated that karyotype diversification in lebiasinids was accompanied by a series of structural and numeric chromosome rearrangements of different types, including particularly fusions and fissions.

Abstract
Astyanax is a genus with a wide distribution ranging from the south United States to north of Patagonia (Argentina). The available cytogenetic data on Astyanax indicate a high karyotypic diversity, with diploid number of 36-52 chromosomes, presence of B chromosomes, heterochromatin polymorphism, and variations with respect to the number and localization of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) and 18S and 5S ribosomal DNA sites. In the present study, we estimated the evolutionary history and times of divergence for 10 nominal Astyanax species from the South and Central/North American (Cna) continents, which present distinct chromosomal characteristics, based on molecular clocks inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequence. The molecular clock results indicate the origin of three distinct clades (Humeral dark spot [Hds]; Diffuse humeral spot [Dhs]; Cna group) during the late Miocene about 11.2 million years ago (Mya). Thus, Astyanax mexicanus (Cna) represent a species that diverged a long time ago (∼8.6 Mya) from the Hds group, and Astyanax schubarti is the oldest species (∼6.5 Mya) among the Dhs species.
