Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to conduct a secondary, post hoc analysis of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) vitamin D (vitD) pregnancy study by Hollis et al, which reported on the effect of vitD supplementation in pregnant women and determine the potential interaction between intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) concentrations, vitD status, and various comorbidities associated with pregnancy. Women with low 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations and high iPTH concentrations during pregnancy, known as functional vitamin-D deficiency (FVDD), were more likely to acquire complications also affecting their neonates. STUDY DESIGN This post hoc analysis of data collected from a diverse group of pregnant women participating in the NICHD vitD pregnancy study was applied to investigate the applicability of the concept of FVDD in pregnancy (Hemmingway, 2018) in identifying potential risks for certain comorbidities of pregnancy. This analysis defines FVDD as maternal serum 25(OH)D concentrations below 20 ng/mL and iPTH concentrations above 65 pg/mL creating a definitive ratio number, 0.308, to classify mothers as having FVDD prior to delivery (PTD). Statistical analyses were performed using SAS 9.4 (Cary, NC). RESULTS In total, 281 women (85 African American, 115 Hispanic, and 81 Caucasian) with 25(OH)D and iPTH concentrations measured at monthly visits were included in this analysis. No statistically significant association was found between mothers classified as having FVDD at baseline or 1-month PTD and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, infection, or admittance to the neonatal intensive care unit. When combining all comorbidities of pregnancy in this cohort, results showed those with FVDD at baseline, 24 weeks' gestation, and 1-month PTD were more likely to experience a comorbidity (p = 0.001; p = 0.001; p = 0.004, respectively). Those with FVDD 1-month PTD were 7.1 times (confidence interval [CI]: 1.71-29.81) more likely to have preterm birth (<37 weeks) than women without FVDD. CONCLUSION Participants were more likely to have experienced preterm birth if they met the criteria for FVDD. This study supports the importance of FVDD during pregnancy. Abstract
Pregnancy is a unique time when amplified sex steroid concentrations promote an escalation in vitamin D binding protein (DBP) synthesis, associated with increased total vitamin D and metabolites, including 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). Free 25(OH)D concentration increases disproportionately to total 25(OH)D during pregnancy, likely an adaptation to supply the woman and fetus with readily available 25(OH)D. Highlighting the importance of the calcium metabolic stress during pregnancy, the interactional relationship between serum 25(OH)D and PTH has been evaluated. Maternal total 25(OH)D and total 25(OH)D/iPTH are measures of vitamin D status and biomarkers for potential pregnancy complications. It has been proposed that free 25(OH)D and free 25(OH)D/iPTH could be better indicators of vitamin D status and predictors of pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes (GDM), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and preterm delivery. This study aims to determine if free 25(OH)D and its association with PTH are more accurate predictors of comorbidities of pregnancy than total 25(OH)D and its association with PTH. In this post hoc analysis of the Kellogg Pregnancy Study, a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial, participants included 297 women with singleton pregnancies: 191 participants were randomized into a group receiving a daily prenatal (400 IU vitamin D3) while 196 received a prenatal plus extra supplementation (4400 IU vitamin D3). Blood and urine samples were collected monthly. 297 participants' serum total 25(OH)D concentrations were measured using radioimmunoassay at baseline (visit 1) and 5-7 months' gestation (visit 6-7). 93 participants' serum free 25(OH)D and PTH concentrations were measured using ELISA and immunoradiometric assay, respectively, at visit 1 and 6-7; 66 participants had paired samples and were included in this analysis. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.4, Cary, N.C. or SPSS v28, IBM Corporation, Armonk, N.Y. Results were considered significant with a p < 0.05. A significant relationship exists between the ratio of total 25(OH)D/iPTH and free 25(OH)D/iPTH grouped by total 25(OH)D ≥ 30 ng/mL and < 30 ng/mL as an indicator of maternal vitamin D status. There was a statistically significant relationship between lower mean free 25(OH)D/iPTH and the development of GDM at visit 1 (p = 0.0003) and at visit 6-7 (p = 0.001) while total 25(OH)D/iPTH and GDM were significantly related only at visit 1 (p = 0.029). In this exploratory cohort, neither free 25(OH)D/iPTH nor total 25(OH)D/iPTH were significantly associated with increased incidence of preterm delivery, hypertensive disorders, or combined comorbidities of pregnancy. An univariate logistic regression evaluating the outcome of gestational diabetes while independently controlling for independent factors showed the ratio of free 25(OH)D/iPTH was more closely associated with gestational diabetes than the ratio of total 25(OH)D/iPTH, although neither were significant. This proof-of-concept analysis suggests that the ratio of free 25(OH)D/iPTH is associated with the development of gestational diabetes throughout pregnancy while total 25(OH)D/iPTH is only associated with the outcome early in pregnancy. Further investigation is warranted to explore this relationship between calcium metabolic stress during pregnancy with a larger cohort to improve validity,reproducibility, and relevance to other pregnancy comorbidities.

Abstract
PURPOSE Accumulating evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. However, the dose-response relationship between maternal vitamin D status and adverse birth outcomes remains unclear. Focusing on prospective observational studies, we aimed to explore the dose-response relationship of vitamin D status with the risk of low birth weight (LBW), macrosomia (MA), preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age (SGA), and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). METHODS Databases including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were used up to 19 January 2021 to search for observational studies that fulfilled criteria as follows: cohort studies, case-cohort studies, or nested case-control studies. Random-effects models were used to pool relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in the observational studies. RESULTS A total of 72 publications were included in this systematic review and 71 in the meta-analysis. Maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations were inversely associated with the risk of LBW (RR: 0.65; 95% CI 0.48-0.86), PTB (RR: 0.67; 95% CI 0.57-0.79), and SGA (RR: 0.61; 95% CI 0.49-0.76) in the highest versus lowest meta-analysis, but not associated with MA and IUGR. Linear dose-response analysis showed that each 25 nmol/L increase in 25(OH)D was associated with a 6% and 10% reduction in the risk of PTB (RR: 0.94; 95% CI 0.90-0.98) and SGA (RR: 0.90; 95% CI 0.84-0.97), respectively. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that a sufficient vitamin D status during pregnancy is protective against the risk of LBW, PTB, and SGA.

Vitamin D Levels in Early and Middle Pregnancy and Preeclampsia, a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14050999. Abstract
Vitamin D (VitD) shows a beneficial role in placentation, the immune system, and angiogenesis, and thus, VitD status may link to the risk of preeclampsia. A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the association between VitD status in early and middle pregnancy and the risk of preeclampsia. A total of 22 studies with 25,530 participants were included for analysis. Women with VitD insufficiency or deficiency had a higher preeclampsia rate compared to women with replete VitD levels (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.39–1.79). Women with VitD deficiency had a higher preeclampsia rate compared to women with replete or insufficient VitD levels (OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.10–1.66). Women with insufficient VitD levels had a higher preeclampsia rate compared to women with replete VitD levels (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.24–1.66). Women with deficient VitD levels had a higher preeclampsia rate compared to women with replete VitD levels (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.05–2.14). Sensitivity analysis showed the results were stable after excluding any one of the included studies. In conclusion, our systematic review suggested that VitD insufficiency or deficiency was associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have investigated the associations between vitamin D and the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes; however, the results are conflicting and dose-response relationships remain to be confirmed. This study aimed to summarize previous studies on the associations of vitamin D levels with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), pre-eclampsia (PE), gestational hypertension (GH), and caesarean section (C-section), and to clarify the dose-response trends. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched to identify eligible articles. A total of 69 prospective observational studies including cohort studies, case-cohort studies, or nested case-control studies were included in the current systematic review, of which 68 studies were available for meta-analysis. Compared with the lowest level, the highest level of 25(OH)D was significantly associated with a lower risk of GDM (RR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.66-0.87), PE (RR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.60-0.90;), and GH (RR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.79-0.97); however, no significant relationship was found for C-section (RR: 1.00; 95% CI: 0.90-1.12). There was significant between-study heterogeneity for GDM (I2 = 69.2%; Pheterogeneity < 0.001), PE (I2 = 52.0%; Pheterogeneity = 0.001), and C-section (I2 = 59.1%; Pheterogeneity < 0.001), while no heterogeneity was found for GH (I2 = 0.0%; Pheterogeneity = 0.676). For each 25 nmol L-1 increase in 25(OH)D, the pooled RR was 0.92 (95% CI: 0.86-0.97) for GDM and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.84-0.94) for PE, respectively. Notably, the dose-response analysis showed a non-linear relationship between maternal 25(OH)D levels and the risk of PE (Pnon-linearity = 0.009). Our meta-analysis provides further scientific evidence of the inverse association between 25(OH)D levels and the risk of GDM, PE, and GH, which may be useful for the prevention of pregnancy complications. However, more evidence from prospective studies is needed regarding the dietary intake of vitamin D during pregnancy.

Abstract
Prevention of preeclampsia (PE) remains one of the most significant problems in perinatal medicine. Due to the possible unpredictable course of hypertension in pregnancy, primarily PE and the high complication rate for the mother and fetus/newborn, it is urgent to offer pregnant women in high-risk groups effective methods of preventing the PE development or delaying its appearance. In addition, due to the association of PE with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in later life, effective preeclampsia prevention could also be important in reducing their incidence. Ideal PE prophylaxis should target the pathogenetic changes leading to the development of PE and be safe for the mother and fetus, inexpensive and freely available. Currently, the only recognized method of PE prevention recommended by many institutions around the world is the use of a small dose of acetylsalicylic acid in pregnant women with risk factors. Unfortunately, some cases of PE are diagnosed in women without recognized risk factors and in those in whom prophylaxis with acetylsalicylic acid is not adequate. Hence, new drugs which would target pathogenetic elements in the development of preeclampsia are studied. Vitamin D (Vit D) seems to be a promising agent due to its beneficial effect on placental implantation, the immune system, and angiogenic factors. Studies published so far emphasize the relationship of its deficiency with the development of PE, but the data on the benefits of its supplementation to reduce the risk of PE are inconclusive. In the light of current research, the key issue is determining the protective concentration of Vit D in a pregnant woman. The study aims to present the possibility of using Vit D to prevent PE, emphasizing its impact on the pathogenetic elements of preeclampsia development.

Abstract
Micronutrient deficiency persists throughout the world, and although the burden is higher in low-resource settings, it is also prevalent in wealthy countries, a phenomenon termed 'hidden hunger'. Due to their high requirements for vitamins and minerals relative to their energy intake, young women and children are particularly vulnerable to hidden hunger. As they share several risk factors and impact on overlapping outcomes, we consider how deficiency of iron, iodine and vitamin D can have profound impacts on perinatal health and infant development. We review the epidemiology of these micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy, including social, environmental and dietary risk factors. We identify the main challenges in defining nutritional status of these nutrients using validated diagnostic criteria linked with meaningful clinical outcomes. Public health strategies are urgently required to improve the overall health and nutritional status of women of reproductive age. Obesity prevention and early detection of malnutrition with standardised screening methods would detect pregnant women at increased risk of iron deficiency. Development of sensitive, individual biomarkers of iodine status is required to protect maternal health and fetal/infant brain development. Risk assessments of vitamin D requirements during pregnancy need to be revisited from the perspective of fetal and neonatal requirements. International consensus on standardised approaches to micronutrient assessment, analysis and reporting as well as sensitive, clinically validated infant and child neuro-behavioural outcomes will enable progression of useful observational and intervention studies.

Abstract
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) reflects inadequate growth in-utero and is prevalent in low resource settings. This study aimed to assess the association of maternal delivery parathyroid hormone (PTH) - a regulator of bone turnover and calcium homeostasis - with newborn anthropometry, to identify regulators of PTH, and to delineate pathways by which maternal PTH regulates birth size using path analysis. This was a cross-sectional analysis of data from participants (n = 537) enrolled in the Maternal Vitamin D for Infant Growth trial in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Primary exposures were maternal delivery intact PTH (iPTH) or whole PTH (wPTH) and outcomes were gestational age- and sex-standardized z-scores for birth length (LAZ), weight (WAZ), and head circumference (HCAZ). Hypothesized regulators of PTH included calcium and protein intake, vitamin D, magnesium, fibroblast-like growth factor-23 (FGF23), and C-reactive protein. Maternal iPTH was not associated with birth size in linear regression analyses; however, in path analysis models, every SD increase in log(iPTH) was associated with 0.08SD (95% CI: 0.002, 0.162) higher LAZ. In linear regression and path analysis models, wPTH was positively associated with WAZ. Vitamin D suppressed PTH, while FGF23 was positively associated with PTH. In path analysis models, higher magnesium was negatively associated with LAZ; FGF23 was positively associated and protein intake was negatively associated with LAZ, WAZ, and HCAZ. Higher maternal PTH in late pregnancy is unlikely to contribute to IUGR. Future studies should investigate maternal FGF23, magnesium and protein intake as regulators of fetal growth, particularly in settings where food insecurity and IUGR are public health problems.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy has been linked to perinatal adverse outcomes. Studies conducted to date have recommended assessing interactions with other vitamin D-related metabolites to clarify this subject. We aimed to evaluate the association of vitamin D deficiency during early pregnancy with preterm birth. Secondary outcomes included low birth weight and small for gestational age. Additionally, we explored the role that parathyroid hormone, calcium and phosphorus could play in the associations. We conducted a prospective cohort study comprising 289 pregnant women in a hospital in Granada, Spain. Participants were followed-up from weeks 10-12 of gestation to postpartum. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, parathyroid hormone, calcium, and phosphorus were measured within the first week after recruitment. Pearson's χ2 test, Mann-Whitney U test, binary and multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore associations between variables and outcomes. 36.3% of the participants were vitamin D deficient (<20 ng/mL). 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration was inversely correlated with parathyroid hormone (ρ = -0.146, p = 0.013). Preterm birth was associated with vitamin D deficiency in the multivariable model, being this association stronger amongst women with parathyroid hormone serum levels above the 80th percentile (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 6.587, 95% CI (2.049, 21.176), p = 0.002). Calcium and phosphorus were not associated with any studied outcome. Combined measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone could be a better estimator of preterm birth than vitamin D in isolation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preeclampsia has been associated with features of secondary hyperparathyroidism. In this study, we examine the relationships of calcium metabolism with blood pressure (BP) in preeclamptic women and in a control group of normal (NORM) pregnancies in the postpartum. METHODS Sixty-three consecutive preeclamptic women (age 35 ± 6 years) were studied 4 weeks after delivery. We collected clinical and lab information on pregnancy and neonates and measured plasma and urinary calcium and phosphate, plasma parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D], and performed 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring. BP and calcium metabolism of 51 preeclamptic were compared with 17 NORM pregnant women that matched for age, race, and postpartum BMI. RESULTS 25(OH)D deficiency (<10 ng/ml) was found in 3% of preeclamptic women, insufficiency (10-30 ng/ml) in 67%, and NORM values (31-100 ng/ml) in the remaining 30%. Elevated plasma PTH (≥79 pg/ml) was found in 24% of preeclamptic women who had 25(OH)D plasma levels of 21.4 ± 8.3 ng/ml. In these women, PTH levels was independently associated with 24-h SBP and DBP and daytime and night-time DBP. Prevalence of nondippers and reverse dippers was elevated (75% and 33%, respectively). No associations between calcium metabolism and neonates' characteristics of preeclamptic women were observed. Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency and of elevated plasma PTH levels were comparable in matched groups. Considering preeclamptic women and matched controls as a whole group, office SBP and DBP levels were associated with PTH independently of preeclampsia and other confounders. CONCLUSION Features of secondary hyperparathyroidism are common in the postpartum. Preeclampsia and increased PTH levels were both independent factors associated with increased BP after delivery, and both might affect the future cardiovascular risk of these women.

Abstract
Several epidemiological studies suggest an association between vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Here, we explored the mechanism through which VDD induced fetal IUGR. Pregnant mice were fed with VDD diet to establish VDD model. Cyp27b1+/- mice were generated to develop a model of active vitamin D3 deficiency. Cyp27b1+/- mice were injected with either 1α,25(OH)2D3 or vehicle once a day throughout pregnancy. As expected, fetal weight and crown-rump length were reduced in VDD diet-fed mice. Correspondingly, fetal weight and crown-rump length were lower in cyp27b1+/- mice. 1α,25(OH)2D3 elevated fetal weight and crown-rump length, and protected cyp27b1+/- mice from fetal IUGR. Further analysis found that placental proliferation was inhibited and placental weight was decreased in VDD diet-fed mice. Several growth factors and nutrient transfer pumps were downregulated in the placentas of VDD diet-fed mice. Mechanistically, several inflammatory cytokines were upregulated and placental NF-κB was activated not only in VDD diet-fed mice but also in VDD pregnant women. Interestingly, 1α,25(OH)2D3 inhibited the downregulated of placental nutrient transfer pumps and the upregulated of placental inflammatory cytokines in Cyp27b1+/- mice. These results provide experimental evidence that gestational VDD causes placental insufficiency and fetal IUGR may be through inducing placental inflammation.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency has been widely reported among pregnant women and infants around the world. Women with low sun exposure, high BMI, low vitamin D intakes and socioeconomic disadvantage with poor quality diets are at greatest risk of vitamin D deficiency, leading to very low serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in their offspring and an increased risk of nutritional rickets. Many observational studies, supported by compelling in vitro and in vivo data, have generated evidence suggesting that low vitamin D status in pregnancy may also contribute to the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes including hypertensive disorders (e.g., preeclampsia), fetal growth restriction, and preterm birth. However, the few large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted to date have generated conflicting evidence for a role of vitamin D supplementation in improving perinatal outcomes. Vitamin D supplementation policies during pregnancy and implementation of policies vary within and between jurisdictions. Regulatory authorities have cited insufficient evidence to establish pregnancy-specific targets for serum 25(OH)D concentrations or prenatal vitamin D intake that effectively reduce the risks of adverse perinatal and infant outcomes. This paper arises from a Debate on Vitamin D Requirements during Pregnancy, held at the 22nd Vitamin D Workshop, 2019. From varied perspectives, our objectives were to evaluate the evidence for: vitamin D metabolism in pregnancy and the prevalence of gestational vitamin D deficiency worldwide; the translation of laboratory research findings to clinical studies on the role of vitamin D in perinatal health; the challenges of designing and conducting clinical trials to establish prenatal vitamin D requirements; and results to date of major large RCTs of prenatal vitamin D supplementation. Lastly, we explored potential next steps towards generating robust clinical data in this field to address both public health protection and patient care.

The role of parathyroid hormone during pregnancy on the relationship between maternal vitamin D deficiency and fetal growth restriction: a prospective birth cohort study. Br J Nutr 2020; 124:432-439. Abstract
Previous studies have shown conflicting findings regarding the relationship between maternal vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and fetal growth restriction (FGR). We hypothesised that parathyroid hormone (PTH) may be an underlying factor relevant to this potential association. In a prospective birth cohort study, descriptive statistics were evaluated for the demographic characteristics of 3407 pregnancies in the second trimester from three antenatal clinics in Hefei, China. The association of the combined status of vitamin D and PTH with birth weight and the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) was assessed by a multivariate linear and binary logistic regression. We found that declined status of 25-hydroxyvitamin D is associated with lower birth weight (for moderate VDD: adjusted β = -49·4 g, 95 % CI -91·1, -7·8, P < 0·05; for severe VDD: adjusted β = -79·8 g, 95 % CI -127·2, -32·5, P < 0·01), as well as ascended levels of PTH (for elevated PTH: adjusted β = -44·5 g, 95 % CI -82·6, -6·4, P < 0·05). Compared with the non-VDD group with non-elevated PTH, pregnancies with severe VDD and elevated PTH had the lowest neonatal birth weight (adjusted β = -124·7 g, 95 % CI -194·6, -54·8, P < 0·001) and the highest risk of SGA (adjusted risk ratio (RR) = 3·36, 95 % CI 1·41, 8·03, P < 0·01). Notably, the highest risk of less Ca supplementation was founded in severe VDD group with elevated PTH (adjusted RR = 4·67, 95 % CI 2·78, 7·85, P < 0·001). In conclusion, elevated PTH induced by less Ca supplementation would further aggravate the risk of FGR in pregnancies with severe VDD through impaired maternal Ca metabolism homoeostasis.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to assess biomarkers of calcium homeostasis and tooth development, in mothers during pregnancy and their children at birth, for enamel hypoplasia (EH) in the primary maxillary central incisor teeth. METHODS Bayesian methodology was used for secondary data analyses from a randomized, controlled trial of prenatal vitamin D3 supplementation in healthy mothers (N = 350) and a follow-up study of a subset of the children. The biomarkers were serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), total circulating 25-dihydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D). The maternal biomarkers were assayed monthly during pregnancy, and the child's biomarkers were derived from cord blood. Digital images of the child's 2 teeth were scored for EH using Enamel Defects Index criteria for each of the incisal, middle, and cervical regions for an EH extent score. RESULTS The child EH prevalence was 41% (60/145), with most defects present in the incisal and middle tooth regions. Cord blood iPTH and 1,25(OH)2D levels were significantly associated with EH extent after controlling for maternal factors. For every 1 pg/mL increase in cord blood iPTH, the EH extent decreased by approximately 6%. For every 10 pg/mL increase in cord blood 1,25(OH)2D, the EH extent increased by almost 30% (holding all other terms constant and adjusting for subject-level heterogeneity). The relationship between maternal 25(OH)D and maternal mean iPTH varied significantly by EH extent. CONCLUSION The results suggest possible modifiable relationships of maternal and neonatal factors of calcium homeostasis during pregnancy and at birth for EH, contributing to the frontier of knowledge regarding sound tooth development for dental caries prevention.

Abstract
Adverse effects of low vitamin D status and calcium intakes in pregnancy may be mediated through functional effects on the calcium metabolic system. Little explored in pregnancy, we aimed to examine the relative importance of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and calcium intake on parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations in healthy white-skinned pregnant women. This cross-sectional analysis included 142 participants (14 ± 2 weeks' gestation) at baseline of a vitamin D intervention trial at 51.9 °N. Serum 25(OH)D, PTH, and albumin-corrected calcium were quantified biochemically. Total vitamin D and calcium intakes (diet and supplements) were estimated using a validated food frequency questionnaire. The mean ± SD vitamin D intake was 10.7 ± 5.2 μg/day. With a mean ± SD serum 25(OH)D of 54.9 ± 22.6 nmol/L, 44% of women were <50 nmol/L and 13% <30 nmol/L. Calcium intakes (mean ± SD) were 1182 ± 488 mg/day and 23% of participants consumed <800 mg/day. The mean ± SD serum albumin-adjusted calcium was 2.2 ± 0.1 mmol/L and geometric mean (95% CI) PTH was 9.2 (8.4, 10.2) pg/mL. PTH was inversely correlated with serum 25(OH)D (r = -0.311, p < 0.001), but not with calcium intake or serum calcium (r = -0.087 and 0.057, respectively, both p > 0.05). Analysis of variance showed that while serum 25(OH)D (dichotomised at 50 nmol/L) had a significant effect on PTH (p = 0.025), calcium intake (<800, 800⁻1000, ≥1000 mg/day) had no effect (p = 0.822). There was no 25(OH)D-calcium intake interaction effect on PTH (p = 0.941). In this group of white-skinned women with largely sufficient calcium intakes, serum 25(OH)D was important for maintaining normal PTH concentration.
