Fusoid cells in the grass family Poaceae (Poales): a developmental study reveals homologies and suggests new insights into their functional role in young leaves

Foliar element distributions in Guadua bamboo, a major forest dominant in southwestern Amazonia

Silica is the best-known component filling the spaces that form phytoliths in many plants, but phytoliths may also contain other elements. We used scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX) to map element distributions in the leaves of Guadua bamboo, which is a successful competitor in southwestern Amazonian forests. We emphasize immobile elements that can be mineralized (silicon and calcium) as well as potassium, an abundant mobile nutrient with many vital functions. We discovered high silicon (Si) content with little or no calcium (Ca) or potassium (K) in bulliform cells, bilobate shaped short cells and stomata, all of which can form phytoliths, and moderately high Si content in the bundle sheet, prickle tips and papillae. K often surrounded Si-loaded cells, Si and K had overlapping distributions in the intercostal areas near vein margins, and Ca showed abundant spotted distribution in the intercostal areas. The dark inside content of the costal zones of some samples in light microscopy showed no mineralization but prominently contained sulfur. Adjacent fusoid cells showed different Si, K and Ca combinations, which may suggest potentially variable functions of these cells. Widespread Si deposition strengthens Guadua bamboo leaves and may help it to outcompete tree species during periods of drought.

The Streptochaeta Genome and the Evolution of the Grasses

In this work, we sequenced and annotated the genome of Streptochaeta angustifolia, one of two genera in the grass subfamily Anomochlooideae, a lineage sister to all other grasses. The final assembly size is over 99% of the estimated genome size. We find good collinearity with the rice genome and have captured most of the gene space. Streptochaeta is similar to other grasses in the structure of its fruit (a caryopsis or grain) but has peculiar flowers and inflorescences that are distinct from those in the outgroups and in other grasses. To provide tools for investigations of floral structure, we analyzed two large families of transcription factors, AP2-like and R2R3 MYBs, that are known to control floral and spikelet development in rice and maize among other grasses. Many of these are also regulated by small RNAs. Structure of the gene trees showed that the well documented whole genome duplication at the origin of the grasses (ρ) occurred before the divergence of the Anomochlooideae lineage from the lineage leading to the rest of the grasses (the spikelet clade) and thus that the common ancestor of all grasses probably had two copies of the developmental genes. However, Streptochaeta (and by inference other members of Anomochlooideae) has lost one copy of many genes. The peculiar floral morphology of Streptochaeta may thus have derived from an ancestral plant that was morphologically similar to the spikelet-bearing grasses. We further identify 114 loci producing microRNAs and 89 loci generating phased, secondary siRNAs, classes of small RNAs known to be influential in transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of several plant functions.

Phenotypic plasticity and genetic variation in leaf traits of Yushania niitakayamensis (Bambusoideae; Poaceae) in contrasting light environments

Yushania niitakayamensis (Bambusoideae; Poaceae), a perennial grass distributed from mid to high elevations in Taiwan, is often found growing in exposed grassland or shaded forest understories. To answer the question how does Y. niitakayamensis cope with contrasting light availability of habitats, we compared (1) leaf ecophysiological traits between populations of Y. niitakayamensis growing in exposed and shaded habitats in four seasons, and (2) plasticity patterns of transplanted plants to two light treatments (full-sun and 70 % shading) in a phytotron. Significant differences in leaf morphological (leaf length, width, specific leaf area, stomatal density), anatomical (leaf thickness (LT), the frequency of cavity formed by collapsed fusoid cells), and biochemical (chlorophyll contents, nitrogen contents per unit area ([N]_area) and stable carbon isotope ratio) features were found between populations across seasons. Common garden experiments suggested that most of the trait variations in field growing plants can be explained by the effect of growth light treatment but not by that of population. However, variations between the two populations in LT, [N]_area, gas exchange parameters, and the degree of plasticity in LT and [N]_area in responding to growth light regimes might have genetic basis. In comparison between transplants from different origins grown under same light regime, plants from the exposed population grown under full-sun expressed significantly higher LT, [N]_area and light-saturated photosynthetic rates, whereas plants from the shaded population grown under shading had significantly higher water use efficiency. Accordingly, local specialization in populations of Y. niitakayamensis to particular environmental conditions might have arisen.

Checklist of the grasses of India

A checklist of the grasses of India is presented, as compiled from survey of all available literature. Of the twelve subfamilies of grasses, ten are represented in India. Most subfamilies have been examined by taxonomic experts for up-to-date nomenclature. The list includes 1506 species plus infraspecific taxa and presents information on types, synonyms, distribution within India, and habit. Twelve new combinations are made, viz. The botanical multiverse of Peter Barlow

Dr Peter Barlow, who died in 2017, was one of the most respected botanists and biologists of the latter half of the 20th Century. His interests covered a wide range of plant biological topics, e.g. root growth and development, plant cytoskeleton, effects of gravity, plant intelligence, pattern formation, and evolution of eukaryotic cells. Here we consider Peter's numerous contributions to the: elucidation of plant patterns; understanding of root biology; role of the plant cytoskeleton in growth and development; influence of the Moon on terrestrial vegetation; Cell Body concept; and plant neurobiology. In so doing we attempt not only to provide an overview of Peter's important work in many areas of plant biology, but also to place that work in the context of recent advances in plant and biological sciences.
