Exploring the Role of Non-Structural Carbohydrates (NSCs) Under Abiotic Stresses on Woody Plants: A Comprehensive Review

Global climate change has increased the severity and frequency of abiotic stresses, posing significant challenges to the survival and growth of woody plants. Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), including starch and sugars, play a vital role in enabling plants to withstand these stresses, helping to stabilize cellular functions by buffering plant energy demands and facilitating recovery on the alleviation of stress. Despite the recognized multiple functions of NSCs, the contrasting effects of multiple abiotic stresses on NSCs dynamics in woody plants remain poorly understood. This review aims to explore the current knowledge of the contrasting effects of abiotic stress conditions including drought, salinity, heat, water logging, and cold on NSCs dynamics. The roles of NSCs in regulating stress-resilience responses in woody plants are also discussed, along with the challenges in NSC measurement, and options for future research directions are explored. This review is based on comprehensive literature research across different search engines like Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (2000-2024) using targeted keywords. This study compiles the current research on NSCs functions and provides insights into the adaptive strategies of woody plants in response to changing climate conditions, providing groundwork for future research to improve stress tolerance in woody plants.

Xylem-dwelling pathogen unaffected by local xylem vessel network properties in grapevines (Vitis spp.)

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is the xylem-dwelling bacterium associated with Pierce's disease (PD), which causes mortality in agriculturally important species, such as grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The development of PD symptoms in grapevines depends on the ability of Xf to produce cell-wall-degrading enzymes to break up intervessel pit membranes and systematically spread through the xylem vessel network. Our objective here was to investigate whether PD resistance could be mechanistically linked to xylem vessel network local connectivity.

METHODS

We used high-resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (microCT) imaging to identify and describe the type, area and spatial distribution of intervessel connections for six different grapevine genotypes from three genetic backgrounds, with varying resistance to PD (four PD resistant and two PD susceptible).

KEY RESULTS

Our results suggest that PD resistance is unlikely to derive from local xylem network connectivity. The intervessel pit area (Ai) varied from 0.07 ± 0.01 mm2 mm-3 in Lenoir to 0.17 ± 0.03 mm2 mm-3 in Blanc do Bois, both PD resistant. Intervessel contact fraction (Cp) was not statically significant, but the two PD-susceptible genotypes, Syrah (0.056 ± 0.015) and Chardonnay (0.041 ± 0.013), were among the most highly connected vessel networks. Neither Ai nor Cp explained differences in PD resistance among the six genotypes. Bayesian re-analysis of our data shows moderate evidence against the effects of the traits analysed: Ai (BF01 = 4.88), mean vessel density (4.86), relay diameter (4.30), relay density (3.31) and solitary vessel proportion (3.19).

CONCLUSIONS

Our results show that radial and tangential xylem network connectivity is highly conserved within the six different Vitis genotypes we sampled. The way that Xf traverses the vessel network may limit the importance of local network properties to its spread and may confer greater importance on host biochemical responses.

The legacy of past droughts induces water-sparingly behaviour in Grüner Veltliner grapevines

Drought is becoming more frequent and severe in numerous wine-growing regions. Nevertheless, limited research has examined the legacy of recurrent droughts, focusing on leaf physiology and anatomy over consecutive seasons. We investigated drought legacies (after 2 years of drought exposure) in potted grapevines, focusing on stomatal behaviour under well-watered conditions during the third year. Vines were subjected for two consecutive years to short- (SD) or long-term (LD) seasonal droughts, or well-watered conditions (WW). In the third year, all plants were grown without water limitation. Water potential and gas exchange were monitored throughout the three seasons, while leaf morpho-anatomical traits were measured at the end of the third year. During droughts (1st and 2nd year), stem water potential of SD and LD plants fell below -1.1 MPa, with a consequent 75% reduction in stomatal conductance (gs ) compared to WW. In the 3rd year, when all vines were daily irrigated to soil capacity (midday stem water potential ~ -0.3 MPa), 45% lower values of gs were observed in the ex-LD group compared to both ex-SD and ex-WW. Reduced midrib vessel diameter, lower leaf theoretical hydraulic conductivity, and smaller stomata were measured in ex-LD leaves compared to ex-SD and ex-WW, likely contributing to the reduced gas exchange. Our findings suggest that grapevines exposed to drought may adopt a more water-conserving strategy in subsequent seasons, irrespective of current soil water availability, with the degree of change influenced by the intensity and duration of past drought events.
