Springing forward: Migrating songbirds catch up with the start of spring in North America

In temperate regions, the annual pattern of spring onset can be envisioned as a 'green wave' of emerging vegetation that moves across continents from low to high latitudes, signifying increasing food availability for consumers. Many herbivorous migrants 'surf' such resource waves, timing their movements to exploit peak vegetation resources in early spring. Although less well studied at the individual level, secondary consumers such as insectivorous songbirds can track vegetation phenology during migration as well. We hypothesized that four species of ground-foraging songbirds in eastern North America-two warblers and two thrushes-time their spring migrations to coincide with later phases of vegetation phenology, corresponding to increased arthropod prey, and predicted they would match their migration rate to the green wave but trail behind it rather than surfing its leading edge. We further hypothesized that the rate at which spring onset progresses across the continent influences bird migration rates, such that individuals adjust migration timing within North America to phenological conditions they experience en route. To test our hypotheses, we used a continent-wide automated radio telemetry network to track individual songbirds on spring migration between the U.S. Gulf Coast region and northern locations closer to their breeding grounds. We measured vegetation phenology using two metrics of spring onset, the spring index first leaf date and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), then calculated the rate and timing of spring onset relative to bird detections. All individuals arrived in the southeastern United States well after local spring onset. Counter to our expectations, we found that songbirds exhibited a 'catching up' pattern: Individuals migrated faster than the green wave of spring onset, effectively closing in on the start of spring as they approached breeding areas. While surfing of resource waves is a well-documented migration strategy for herbivorous waterfowl and ungulates, individual songbirds in our study migrated faster than the green wave and increasingly caught up to its leading edge en route. Consequently, songbirds experience a range of vegetation phenophases while migrating through North America, suggesting flexibility in their capacity to exploit variable resources in spring.

A Scaling Approach to Understand the Dynamics of Fat and Lean Mass in Refueling Migrant Songbirds Measured by Quantitative Magnetic Resonance

Fat contributes most of the energy for migratory flight of birds, whereas lean body tissues (muscles and organs) contribute amino acids and water to maintain metabolic and osmotic homeostasis. During refueling at stopover sites, both fat and lean mass are recovered, but the dynamics of this recovery are poorly understood. We used non-invasive quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR) analysis to measure fat and lean mass of > 3,500 individuals of 25 songbird species during six spring and three autumn migration seasons between 2009 and 2019 at Long Point, ON, Canada. We used allometric scaling analysis and linear mixed-effects modeling of body composition data at both the population level (single capture) and the individual level (recapture). In the population-level analysis, lean mass scaled hypoallometrically with body mass, such that for every 20% increase in body mass, lean mass was predicted to increase by 12.1% in spring and 12.8% in autumn. Fat scaled hyperallometrically with body mass, such that for every 20% increase in body mass, fat mass was predicted to increase by 144% in spring and 136% in autumn. At the individual level, these allometric relationships were more extreme. As a result of this differential allometry, at low body masses, lean and fat mass contributes nearly equally to changes in mass, but at high body mass fat deposition becomes progressively more dominant. Spring migrants deposited relatively more fat than autumn migrants, and in autumn juvenile birds tended to have greater lean mass than adults. Our findings show that lean mass deposition during refueling by songbirds is substantial, and in line with the losses of protein expected in flight. The process of fat and lean mass deposition is characterized by non-linear dynamics which are influenced by the current body composition, season, and, to a lesser extent, age. The patterns suggest that the need for dietary protein to rebuild lean mass will be greater when body mass is low, during autumn migration, and in juvenile birds.

Effect of the Social Environment on Spring Migration Timing of a Songbird

The influence of the social environment on the timing of the annual cycle is poorly understood. Seasonally migratory birds are under pressure to accurately time their spring migration, and throughout the annual cycle, they may experience variability of the local sex-ratio. A population-level male-biased sex ratio is predicted to advance spring migration timing in males and is attributed to the increased intra-specific competition for access to females and/or breeding territories. The present study had two goals. First, to develop a method that utilizes digitally coded radio-transmitters to quantify the activity of flocked individuals in captivity. Second, to use this method to test the hypothesis that the social environment influences the spring migration traits of male yellow-rumped warblers (Setophaga coronata coronata). To accomplish this, birds were captured in the fall in Long Point, Ontario, and transferred to the Advanced Facility for Avian Research, London, Ontario. In the winter, they were assigned to a slightly male- or female-biased treatment and housed in flocks in large free-flight rooms. Throughout the experimental period, we took body mass measurements and standardized photos to monitor body condition and molt progression. To measure locomotor activity, the birds were outfitted with digitally coded radio-transmitters in April and photo-triggered to enter a migratory phenotype. The tagged birds were released at their capture site in May and the Motus Wildlife Tracking System was used to determine stopover departure timing and migratory movements. Sex ratio did not influence body mass or molt progression. However, males from the male-biased treatment had significantly less locomotor movement than those from the female-biased treatment. Additionally, a lower proportion of males from the male-biased treatment initiated migratory restlessness, an indicator of the urge to migrate. Overall, these findings suggest that the social environment can influence behavior of songbirds, but do not support the hypothesis that a male-biased sex ratio accelerates migration.

Using breath δ13C analysis to determine the effects of dietary carbohydrate and protein on glucose and leucine oxidation at rest in the yellow-rumped warbler (Setophaga coronata)

Fat is the major fuel for migratory flight of birds, but protein is also catabolized. Flight range could be reduced if protein is used too quickly from muscles and organs, and it is important to understand factors that influence protein catabolism. Previous correlative studies suggested high protein diets may increase protein use in flight, although a wind tunnel study with yellow-rumped warblers (Setophaga coronata) did not support this relationship. We tested the hypothesis that diet composition affects nutrient oxidation in resting, fasted yellow-rumped warblers. For method development, we gavaged or subcutaneously injected warblers with ¹³C labelled glucose or leucine, and measured δ¹³C of breath CO₂ in real time using infrared laser spectrometry. Regardless of route of administration, leucine had greater instantaneous and cumulative oxidation than glucose. Compared to subcutaneous injection, gavaged birds reached maximum oxidation rate faster for leucine and glucose, respectively, had a higher maximum oxidation rate, and reached final cumulative oxidation approximately faster for leucine or glucose, respectively, indicating immediate oxidation of the substrates by the digestive system. Warblers (N = 10 each) were fed isocaloric 60% carbohydrate or 60% protein diets for minimum 2 weeks, and subcutaneously injected with ¹³C labelled glucose or leucine. Diet composition had little effect on oxidation kinetics except that warblers fed high-carbohydrate reached final cumulative oxidation of leucine more quickly than those fed high-protein. The findings do not support the hypothesis that high protein diets increase the oxidation of protein during negative energy states in migratory birds, and provide methodology that could be applied to test it in flight.

Stopover refuelling, movement and departure decisions in the white-throated sparrow: The influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors during spring migration

Differential migration timing between sex or age classes is an example of how migratory movement strategies can differ among subgroups within a population. However, in songbirds, evidence for intrinsic differences in en route migratory behaviour is often mixed, suggesting that the local environmental context may play a role in accentuating or diminishing patterns. We evaluated how multiple intrinsic and extrinsic variables influenced refuelling rates, local movement behaviour and departure decisions in the white-throated sparrow Zonotrichia albicollis during spring migration. This species exhibits a unique genetically based plumage dimorphism, providing a unique class of individual in which to evaluate patterns and processes of differential migration, in addition to sex, age and migration distance. At a migratory stopover site, plasma metabolite analysis was used to quantify individual variation in stopover refuelling rate. In after second year adults, automated and manual radio telemetry was used to quantify daily activity timing, daily movement distances, stopover duration and departure time. Arrival timing to the stopover site was determined using capture data. Non-breeding and previous breeding/natal latitude were determined using analysis of hydrogen isotopes in claws and feathers. Males arrived at the stopover site 11 days on average before females, but no difference in migration timing was observed between plumage morph or age classes. After second year, adults with more southern previous breeding latitudes arrived at stopover earlier, whereas second year birds making their first return migration arrived at stopover in an inverse relationship to non-breeding latitude. Stopover refuelling rate did not differ between ages, sexes or plumage morphs, and daily departure probability of adults was higher under warmer temperatures and favourable tailwinds. White-striped morphs moved greater distances during stopover, initiated daily activity earlier in the morning and departed for migration earlier in the evening than tan-striped morphs. Our results show that while individual phenotype can influence some aspects of local stopover-scale movement behaviour, evidence for differential stopover behaviour was weak. Differential migration timing is unlikely to result from intrinsic differences in en route refuelling rate and departure decisions, especially because the latter is strongly influenced by meteorological conditions.

Evidence for spring stopover refuelling in migrating silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans)

Migrating animals must acquire sufficient fuel to sustain migratory movement, but how time is allocated to achieve this can vary greatly. The fuel strategies used by migrating bats are not well understood and have not been investigated during the spring when insectivorous bats face low food abundance. Migrating silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans (Le Conte, 1831)) were captured at a stopover site in Long Point, Ontario, Canada, in April and May of 2012–2014. We followed the movements of 40 bats outfitted with radio transmitters using an automated telemetry array and examined the effects of ambient temperature, fat stores, and sex on stopover duration. As seen previously in autumn, most bats departed the evening following capture, but one-third of bats used multiday stopovers. Extended stopover was associated with lower ambient temperature. There was no effect of sex or fat at capture on stopover departure probability. Bats captured closer to dawn had greater fat mass and lean mass than those captured early in the night, a trend indicative of fuel deposition at this site. This is the first study to provide evidence that bats use stopover habitat for refuelling.
