Cross-modal activation of auditory regions during visuo-spatial working memory in early deafness

Linguistic network in early deaf individuals: A neuroimaging meta-analysis

This meta-analysis summarizes evidence from 44 neuroimaging experiments and characterizes the general linguistic network in early deaf individuals. Meta-analytic comparisons with hearing individuals found that a specific set of regions (in particular the left inferior frontal gyrus and posterior middle temporal gyrus) participates in supramodal language processing. In addition to previously described modality-specific differences, the present study showed that the left calcarine gyrus and the right caudate were additionally recruited in deaf compared with hearing individuals. In addition, this study showed that the bilateral posterior superior temporal gyrus is shaped by cross-modal plasticity, whereas the left frontotemporal areas are shaped by early language experience. Although an overall left-lateralized pattern for language processing was observed in the early deaf individuals, regional lateralization was altered in the inferior temporal gyrus and anterior temporal lobe. These findings indicate that the core language network functions in a modality-independent manner, and provide a foundation for determining the contributions of sensory and linguistic experiences in shaping the neural bases of language processing.

A systematic review of altered resting-state networks in early deafness and implications for cochlear implantation outcomes

Auditory deprivation following congenital/pre-lingual deafness (C/PD) can drastically affect brain development and its functional organisation. This systematic review intends to extend current knowledge of the impact of C/PD and deafness duration on brain resting-state networks (RSNs), review changes in RSNs and spoken language outcomes post-cochlear implant (CI) and draw conclusions for future research. The systematic literature search followed the PRISMA guideline. Two independent reviewers searched four electronic databases using combined keywords: 'auditory deprivation', 'congenital/prelingual deafness', 'resting-state functional connectivity' (RSFC), 'resting-state fMRI' and 'cochlear implant'. Seventeen studies (16 cross-sectional and one longitudinal) met the inclusion criteria. Using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool, the publications' quality was rated between 65.0% and 92.5% (mean: 84.10%), ≥80% in 13 out of 17 studies. A few studies were deficient in sampling and/or ethical considerations. According to the findings, early auditory deprivation results in enhanced RSFC between the auditory network and brain networks involved in non-verbal communication, and high levels of spontaneous neural activity in the auditory cortex before CI are evidence of occupied auditory cortical areas with other sensory modalities (cross-modal plasticity) and sub-optimal CI outcomes. Overall, current evidence supports the idea that moreover intramodal and cross-modal plasticity, the entire brain adaptation following auditory deprivation contributes to spoken language development and compensatory behaviours.

Effects on brain structural and functional in deaf children after aerobic exercise training: a pilot cluster randomized controlled study

Purpose: To examine effects of aerobic exercise interventions on brain via the structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), as well as functional change during working memory (WM) task using fMRI in deaf children.Method: The study applied a cluster randomized controlled design. Twelve deaf children in the intervention group were required to complete an eleven-week aerobic exercise intervention, while other twelve age and gender matched deaf children in the control group were required to keep their normal daily life. Task fMRI images of each participant were acquired in the baseline and post intervention period. The surface-based morphometry (SBM) analysis and functional activation analysis were employed to probe the effects of 11-week aerobic exercise on cerebral structural and functional in deaf children, respectively.Results: The 11-week aerobic exercise intervention did not change brain structure in deaf children. However, behavior performance (reaction time and mean accuracy rate) presented significant improvements after the 11-week aerobic exercise intervention. Compared to the control group, the intervention group showed decreased reaction time in the 2-back (p < 0.001) and 2-0 back (p < 0.001), and increased mean accuracy rate during 2-back (p = 0.034). Furthermore, enhanced brain activations in the left supplementary motor cortex (p < 0.05, FDR-corrected) and left paracentral lobule (p < 0.05, FDR-corrected) were observed in the intervention group.Conclusion: 11-week aerobic exercise intervention may not be able to modulate brain structure in deaf children, but may have significantly positive effects on behavior performance and brain functional activation during WM task.

Alterations of Audiovisual Integration in Alzheimer's Disease

Audiovisual integration is a vital information process involved in cognition and is closely correlated with aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this review, we evaluated the altered audiovisual integrative behavioral symptoms in AD. We further analyzed the relationships between AD pathologies and audiovisual integration alterations bidirectionally and suggested the possible mechanisms of audiovisual integration alterations underlying AD, including the imbalance between energy demand and supply, activity-dependent degeneration, disrupted brain networks, and cognitive resource overloading. Then, based on the clinical characteristics including electrophysiological and imaging data related to audiovisual integration, we emphasized the value of audiovisual integration alterations as potential biomarkers for the early diagnosis and progression of AD. We also highlighted that treatments targeted audiovisual integration contributed to widespread pathological improvements in AD animal models and cognitive improvements in AD patients. Moreover, investigation into audiovisual integration alterations in AD also provided new insights and comprehension about sensory information processes.

Increased functional connectivity between the auditory cortex and the frontoparietal network compensates for impaired visuomotor transformation after early auditory deprivation

Early auditory deprivation leads to a reorganization of large-scale brain networks involving and extending beyond the auditory system. It has been documented that visuomotor transformation is impaired after early deafness, associated with a hyper-crosstalk between the task-critical frontoparietal network and the default-mode network. However, it remains unknown whether and how the reorganized large-scale brain networks involving the auditory cortex contribute to impaired visuomotor transformation after early deafness. Here, we asked deaf and early hard of hearing participants and normal hearing controls to judge the spatial location of a visual target. Compared with normal hearing controls, the superior temporal gyrus showed significantly increased functional connectivity with the frontoparietal network and the default-mode network in deaf and early hard of hearing participants, specifically during egocentric judgments. However, increased superior temporal gyrus-frontoparietal network and superior temporal gyrus-default-mode network coupling showed antagonistic effects on egocentric judgments. In deaf and early hard of hearing participants, increased superior temporal gyrus-frontoparietal network connectivity was associated with improved egocentric judgments, whereas increased superior temporal gyrus-default-mode network connectivity was associated with deteriorated performance in the egocentric task. Therefore, the data suggest that the auditory cortex exhibits compensatory neuroplasticity (i.e. increased functional connectivity with the task-critical frontoparietal network) to mitigate impaired visuomotor transformation after early auditory deprivation.

Resting-state functional connectivity in deaf and hearing individuals and its link to executive processing

Sensory experience shapes brain structure and function, and it is likely to influence the organisation of functional networks of the brain, including those involved in cognitive processing. Here we investigated the influence of early deafness on the organisation of resting-state networks of the brain and its relation to executive processing. We compared resting-state connectivity between deaf and hearing individuals across 18 functional networks and 400 ROIs. Our results showed significant group differences in connectivity between seeds of the auditory network and most large-scale networks of the brain, in particular the somatomotor and salience/ventral attention networks. When we investigated group differences in resting-state fMRI and their link to behavioural performance in executive function tasks (working memory, inhibition and switching), differences between groups were found in the connectivity of association networks of the brain, such as the salience/ventral attention and default-mode networks. These findings indicate that sensory experience influences not only the organisation of sensory networks, but that it also has a measurable impact on the organisation of association networks supporting cognitive processing. Overall, our findings suggest that different developmental pathways and functional organisation can support executive processing in the adult brain.

CRYAA and GJA8 promote visual development after whisker tactile deprivation

Deprivation of one sense can be followed by enhanced development of other senses via cross-modal plasticity mechanisms. To study the effect of whisker tactile deprivation on vision during the early stages of development, we clipped the bilateral whiskers of young mice and found that their vision was impaired but later recovered to normal levels. Our results demonstrate that inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/ERK signaling pathway caused short-term visual impairment during early development, while high expression levels of Crystallin Alpha A (CRYAA) and Gap Junction Protein Alpha 8 (GJA8) in the retina led to the recovery of developmental visual acuity. Interestingly, analysis of single-cell sequencing results from human embryonic retinas at 9-19 gestational weeks (GW) revealed that CRYAA and GJA8 display stage-specific peak expression during human embryonic retinal development, suggesting potential functions in visual development. Our data show that high expression levels of CRYAA and GJA8 in the retina after whisker deprivation rescue impaired visual development, which may provide a foundation for further research on the mechanisms of cross-modal plasticity and in particular, offer new insights into the mechanisms underlying tactile-visual cross-modal development.

Altered resting-state network connectivity patterns for predicting attentional function in deaf individuals: An EEG study

Multiple aspects of brain development are influenced by early sensory loss such as deafness. Despite growing evidence of changes in attentional functions for prelingual profoundly deaf, the brain mechanisms underlying these attentional changes remain unclear. This study investigated the relationships between differential attention and the resting-state brain network difference in deaf individuals from the perspective of brain network connectivity. We recruited 36 deaf individuals and 34 healthy controls (HC). We recorded each participant's resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) and the event-related potential (ERP) data from the Attention Network Test (ANT). The coherence (COH) method and graph theory were used to build brain networks and analyze network connectivity. First, the ERPs of analysis in task states were investigated. Then, we correlated the topological properties of the network functional connectivity with the ERPs. The results revealed a significant correlation between frontal-occipital connection in the resting state and the amplitude of alert N1 amplitude in the alpha band. Specifically, clustering coefficients and global and local efficiency correlate negatively with alert N1 amplitude, whereas the characteristic path length positively correlates with alert N1 amplitude. In addition, deaf individuals exhibited weaker frontal-occipital connections compared to the HC group. In executive control, the deaf group had longer reaction times and larger P3 amplitudes. However, the orienting function did not significantly differ from the HC group. Finally, the alert N1 amplitude in the ANT task for deaf individuals was predicted using a multiple linear regression model based on resting-state EEG network properties. Our results suggest that deafness affects the performance of alerting and executive control while orienting functions develop similarly to hearing individuals. Furthermore, weakened frontal-occipital connections in the deaf brain are a fundamental cause of altered alerting functions in the deaf. These results reveal important effects of brain networks on attentional function from the perspective of brain connections and provide potential physiological biomarkers to predicting attention.

Arithmetic in the signing brain: Differences and similarities in arithmetic processing between deaf signers and hearing non-signers

Deaf signers and hearing non-signers have previously been shown to recruit partially different brain regions during simple arithmetic. In light of the triple code model, the differences were interpreted as relating to stronger recruitment of the verbal system of numerical processing, that is, left angular and inferior frontal gyrus, in hearing non-signers, and of the quantity system of numerical processing, that is, right horizontal intraparietal sulcus, for deaf signers. The main aim of the present study was to better understand similarities and differences in the neural correlates supporting arithmetic in deaf compared to hearing individuals. Twenty-nine adult deaf signers and 29 hearing non-signers were enrolled in an functional magnetic resonance imaging study of simple and difficult subtraction and multiplication. Brain imaging data were analyzed using whole-brain analysis, region of interest analysis, and functional connectivity analysis. Although the groups were matched on age, gender, and nonverbal intelligence, the deaf group performed generally poorer than the hearing group in arithmetic. Nevertheless, we found generally similar networks to be involved for both groups, the only exception being the involvement of the left inferior frontal gyrus. This region was activated significantly stronger for the hearing compared to the deaf group but showed stronger functional connectivity with the left superior temporal gyrus in the deaf, compared to the hearing, group. These results lend no support to increased recruitment of the quantity system in deaf signers. Perhaps the reason for performance differences is to be found in other brain regions not included in the original triple code model.

Gamma-Band Modulation in Parietal Area as the Electroencephalographic Signature for Performance in Auditory-Verbal Working Memory: An Exploratory Pilot Study in Hearing and Unilateral Cochlear Implant Children

This pilot study investigates the neurophysiological patterns of visual and auditory verbal working memory (VWM) in unilateral cochlear implant users (UCIs). We compared the task-related electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectral density of 7- to 13-year-old UCIs (n = 7) with a hearing control group (HC, n = 10) during the execution of a three-level n-back task with auditory and visual verbal (letters) stimuli. Performances improved as memory load decreased regardless of sensory modality (SM) and group factors. Theta EEG activation over the frontal area was proportionally influenced by task level; the left hemisphere (LH) showed greater activation in the gamma band, suggesting lateralization of VWM function regardless of SM. However, HCs showed stronger activation patterns in the LH than UCIs regardless of SM and in the parietal area (PA) during the most challenging audio condition. Linear regressions for gamma activation in the PA suggest the presence of a pattern-supporting auditory VWM only in HCs. Our findings seem to recognize gamma activation in the PA as the signature of effective auditory VWM. These results, although preliminary, highlight this EEG pattern as a possible cause of the variability found in VWM outcomes in deaf children, opening up new possibilities for interdisciplinary research and rehabilitation intervention.

Cross-Modal Reorganization From Both Visual and Somatosensory Modalities in Cochlear Implanted Children and Its Relationship to Speech Perception

HYPOTHESIS

We hypothesized that children with cochlear implants (CIs) who demonstrate cross-modal reorganization by vision also demonstrate cross-modal reorganization by somatosensation and that these processes are interrelated and impact speech perception.

BACKGROUND

Cross-modal reorganization, which occurs when a deprived sensory modality's cortical resources are recruited by other intact modalities, has been proposed as a source of variability underlying speech perception in deaf children with CIs. Visual and somatosensory cross-modal reorganization of auditory cortex have been documented separately in CI children, but reorganization in these modalities has not been documented within the same subjects. Our goal was to examine the relationship between cross-modal reorganization from both visual and somatosensory modalities within a single group of CI children.

METHODS

We analyzed high-density electroencephalogram responses to visual and somatosensory stimuli and current density reconstruction of brain activity sources. Speech perception in noise testing was performed. Current density reconstruction patterns were analyzed within the entire subject group and across groups of CI children exhibiting good versus poor speech perception.

RESULTS

Positive correlations between visual and somatosensory cross-modal reorganization suggested that neuroplasticity in different sensory systems may be interrelated. Furthermore, CI children with good speech perception did not show recruitment of frontal or auditory cortices during visual processing, unlike CI children with poor speech perception.

CONCLUSION

Our results reflect changes in cortical resource allocation in pediatric CI users. Cross-modal recruitment of auditory and frontal cortices by vision, and cross-modal reorganization of auditory cortex by somatosensation, may underlie variability in speech and language outcomes in CI children.

Sensory experience modulates the reorganization of auditory regions for executive processing

Crossmodal plasticity refers to the reorganisation of sensory cortices in the absence of their typical main sensory input. Understanding this phenomenon provides insights into brain function and its potential for change and enhancement. Using fMRI, we investigated how early deafness influences crossmodal plasticity and the organisation of executive functions in the adult human brain. Deaf (N = 25; age: mean = 41.68, range = 19-66, SD = 14.38; 16 female, 9 male) and hearing (N = 20; age: mean= 37.50, range= 18-66, SD= 16.85; 15 female, 5 male) participants performed four visual tasks tapping into different components of executive processing: task switching, working memory, planning and inhibition. Our results show that deaf individuals specifically recruit "auditory" regions during task switching. Neural activity in superior temporal regions, most significantly in the right hemisphere, are good predictors of behavioural performance during task switching in the group of deaf individuals, highlighting the functional relevance of the observed cortical reorganisation. Our results show executive processing in typically sensory regions, suggesting that the development and ultimate role of brain regions are influenced by perceptual environmental experience.

Working Memory for Faces among Individuals with Congenital Deafness

BACKGROUND

 Studies examining face processing among individuals with congenital deafness show inconsistent results that are often accounted for by sign language skill. However, working memory for faces as an aspect of face processing has not yet been examined in congenital deafness.

PURPOSE

 To explore working memory for faces among individuals with congenital deafness who are skilled in sign language.

RESEARCH DESIGN

 A quasi-experimental study of individuals with congenital deafness and a control group.

STUDY SAMPLE

 Sixteen individuals with congenital deafness who are skilled in sign language and 18 participants with intact hearing, matched for age, and education.

INTERVENTION

 The participants performed two conditions of the N-back test in ascending difficulty (i.e., 1-back and 2-back).

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

 Levene's and Shapiro-Wilk tests were used to assess group homoscedasticity and normality, respectively. A two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was applied to compare the groups in response time and accuracy of the N-back test, as well as Pearson correlation between response time and accuracy, and sign language skill duration.

RESULTS

 The congenital deafness group performed better than controls, as was found in the response time but not in the accuracy variables. However, an interaction effect showed that this pattern was significant for the 1-back but not for the 2-back condition in the response time but not the accuracy. Further, there was a marginal effect in response time but a significant one in accuracy showing the 2-back was performed worse than the 1-back. No significant correlation was found between response time and accuracy, and sign language skill duration.

CONCLUSION

 Face processing advantage associated with congenital deafness is dependent on cognitive load, but sign language duration does not affect this trend. In addition, response time and accuracy are not equally sensitive to performance differences in the N-back test.

Functional Brain Connections Identify Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Predict the Outcome of Cochlear Implantation

Identification of congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and early intervention, especially by cochlear implantation (CI), are crucial for restoring hearing in patients. However, high accuracy diagnostics of SNHL and prognostic prediction of CI are lacking to date. To diagnose SNHL and predict the outcome of CI, we propose a method combining functional connections (FCs) measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and machine learning. A total of 68 children with SNHL and 34 healthy controls (HC) of matched age and gender were recruited to construct classification models for SNHL and HC. A total of 52 children with SNHL that underwent CI were selected to establish a predictive model of the outcome measured by the category of auditory performance (CAP), and their resting-state fMRI images were acquired. After the dimensional reduction of FCs by kernel principal component analysis, three machine learning methods including the support vector machine, logistic regression, and k-nearest neighbor and their voting were used as the classifiers. A multiple logistic regression method was performed to predict the CAP of CI. The classification model of voting achieves an area under the curve of 0.84, which is higher than that of three single classifiers. The multiple logistic regression model predicts CAP after CI in SNHL with an average accuracy of 82.7%. These models may improve the identification of SNHL through fMRI images and prognosis prediction of CI in SNHL.

Brain Morphological Modifications in Congenital and Acquired Auditory Deprivation: A Systematic Review and Coordinate-Based Meta-Analysis

Neuroplasticity following deafness has been widely demonstrated in both humans and animals, but the anatomical substrate of these changes is not yet clear in human brain. However, it is of high importance since hearing loss is a growing problem due to aging population. Moreover, knowing these brain changes could help to understand some disappointing results with cochlear implant, and therefore could improve hearing rehabilitation. A systematic review and a coordinate-based meta-analysis were realized about the morphological brain changes highlighted by MRI in severe to profound hearing loss, congenital and acquired before or after language onset. 25 papers were included in our review, concerning more than 400 deaf subjects, most of them presenting prelingual deafness. The most consistent finding is a volumetric decrease in gray matter around bilateral auditory cortex. This change was confirmed by the coordinate-based meta-analysis which shows three converging clusters in this region. The visual areas of deaf children is also significantly impacted, with a decrease of the volume of both gray and white matters. Finally, deafness is responsible of a gray matter increase within the cerebellum, especially at the right side. These results are largely discussed and compared with those from deaf animal models and blind humans, which demonstrate for example a much more consistent gray matter decrease along their respective primary sensory pathway. In human deafness, a lot of other factors than deafness could interact on the brain plasticity. One of the most important is the use of sign language and its age of acquisition, which induce among others changes within the hand motor region and the visual cortex. But other confounding factors exist which have been too little considered in the current literature, such as the etiology of the hearing impairment, the speech-reading ability, the hearing aid use, the frequent associated vestibular dysfunction or neurocognitive impairment. Another important weakness highlighted by this review concern the lack of papers about postlingual deafness, whereas it represents most of the deaf population. Further studies are needed to better understand these issues, and finally try to improve deafness rehabilitation.

Associations Between Sign Language Skills and Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Deaf Early Signers

The processing of a language involves a neural language network including temporal, parietal, and frontal cortical regions. This applies to spoken as well as signed languages. Previous research suggests that spoken language proficiency is associated with resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between language regions and other regions of the brain. Given the similarities in neural activation for spoken and signed languages, rsFC-behavior associations should also exist for sign language tasks. In this study, we explored the associations between rsFC and two types of linguistic skills in sign language: phonological processing skill and accuracy in elicited sentence production. Fifteen adult, deaf early signers were enrolled in a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. In addition to fMRI data, behavioral tests of sign language phonological processing and sentence reproduction were administered. Using seed-to-voxel connectivity analysis, we investigated associations between behavioral proficiency and rsFC from language-relevant nodes: bilateral inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG). Results showed that worse sentence processing skill was associated with stronger positive rsFC between the left IFG and left sensorimotor regions. Further, sign language phonological processing skill was associated with positive rsFC from right IFG to middle frontal gyrus/frontal pole although this association could possibly be explained by domain-general cognitive functions. Our findings suggest a possible connection between rsFC and developmental language outcomes in deaf individuals.

Functional connectivity alteration of the deprived auditory regions with cognitive networks in deaf and inattentive adolescents

Adolescents with early profound deafness may present with distractibility and inattentiveness. The brain mechanisms underlying these attention impairments remain unclear. We performed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the functional connectivity of the superior temporal and transverse temporal gyri in 25 inattentive adolescents with bilateral prelingual profound deafness, and compared the results with those of 27 age-matched normal controls. Pearson and Spearman's rho correlation analyses were used to investigate the correlations of altered functional connectivity with the clinical parameters, including the duration of hearing loss sign language, and hearing aid usage. Compared with normal controls, prelingual profound deafness demonstrated mainly decreased resting-state functional connectivity between the deprived auditory regions and several other brain functional networks, including the attention control, language comprehension, default-mode, and sensorimotor networks. Moreover, we also found enhanced resting-state functional connectivity between the deprived auditory cortex and salience network. These results indicate a negative impact of early hearing loss on the attentional and other high cognitive networks, and the use of sign language and hearing aids normalized the participants' connectivity between the primary auditory cortex and attention networks, which is crucial for the early intervention and clinical care of deaf adolescents.

Reorganization of large-scale brain networks in deaf signing adults: The role of auditory cortex in functional reorganization following deafness

If the brain is deprived of input from one or more senses during development, functional and structural reorganization of the deprived regions takes place. However, little is known about how sensory deprivation affects large-scale brain networks. In the present study, we use data-driven independent component analysis (ICA) to characterize large-scale brain networks in 15 deaf early signers and 24 hearing non-signers based on resting-state functional MRI data. We found differences between the groups in independent components representing the left lateralized control network, the default network, the ventral somatomotor network, and the attention network. In addition, we showed stronger functional connectivity for deaf compared to hearing individuals from the middle and superior temporal cortices to the cingulate cortex, insular cortex, cuneus and precuneus, supramarginal gyrus, supplementary motor area, and cerebellum crus 1, and stronger connectivity for hearing non-signers to hippocampus, middle and superior frontal gyri, pre- and postcentral gyri, and cerebellum crus 8. These results show that deafness induces large-scale network reorganization, with the middle/superior temporal cortex as a central node of plasticity. Cross-modal reorganization may be associated with behavioral adaptations to the environment, including superior ability in some visual functions such as visual working memory and visual attention, in deaf signers.

Altered regional activity and connectivity of functional brain networks in congenital unilateral conductive hearing loss

Neuroimaging studies have shown marked alterations in brain function after auditory deprivation, with these alterations mainly caused by sensorineural hearing loss. To date, however, little is known about the patterns of functional brain reorganization in conductive hearing loss (CHL). The effects of congenital unilateral CHL on human brain were assessed by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in 24 patients with unilateral microtia (UM) and 25 healthy controls. Focal brain function and seed-based functional connectivity were analyzed to characterize spontaneous activity and network changes in UM. Patients with UM showed common alterations in focal brain activities in the left inferior temporal gyrus across different measurements, with these alterations significantly associated with the duration of hearing loss. Additionally, focal brain activities were decreased in the auditory system and increased in the visual system, with a disassociated pattern shown in the default-mode system. Using the left inferior temporal gyrus as the seed region, patients with UM showed lower connectivity with the default-mode system and right visual regions but higher connectivity with the left frontoparietal regions when compared with controls. These results indicate that congenital partial hearing deprivation, despite normal bone conduction hearing, can induce widespread reorganizations that continue into adolescence and adulthood.

Early deafness leads to re-shaping of functional connectivity beyond the auditory cortex

Early sensory deprivation, such as deafness, shapes brain development in multiple ways. Deprived auditory areas become engaged in the processing of stimuli from the remaining modalities and in high-level cognitive tasks. Yet, structural and functional changes were also observed in non-deprived brain areas, which may suggest the whole-brain network changes in deaf individuals. To explore this possibility, we compared the resting-state functional network organization of the brain in early deaf adults and hearing controls and examined global network segregation and integration. Relative to hearing controls, deaf adults exhibited decreased network segregation and an altered modular structure. In the deaf, regions of the salience network were coupled with the fronto-parietal network, while in the hearing controls, they were coupled with other large-scale networks. Deaf adults showed weaker connections between auditory and somatomotor regions, stronger coupling between the fronto-parietal network and several other large-scale networks (visual, memory, cingulo-opercular and somatomotor), and an enlargement of the default mode network. Our findings suggest that brain plasticity in deaf adults is not limited to changes in the auditory cortex but additionally alters the coupling between other large-scale networks and the development of functional brain modules. These widespread functional connectivity changes may provide a mechanism for the superior behavioral performance of the deaf in visual and attentional tasks.

Changes of the Brain Causal Connectivity Networks in Patients With Long-Term Bilateral Hearing Loss

It remains poorly understood how brain causal connectivity networks change following hearing loss and their effects on cognition. In the current study, we investigated this issue. Twelve patients with long-term bilateral sensorineural hearing loss [mean age, 55.7 ± 2.0; range, 39–63 years; threshold of hearing level (HL): left ear, 49.0 ± 4.1 dB HL, range, 31.25–76.25 dB HL; right ear, 55.1 ± 7.1 dB HL, range, 35–115 dB HL; the duration of hearing loss, 16.67 ± 4.5, range, 3–55 years] and 12 matched normally hearing controls (mean age, 52.3 ± 1.8; range, 42–63 years; threshold of hearing level: left ear, 17.6 ± 1.3 dB HL, range, 11.25–26.25 dB HL; right ear, 19.7 ± 1.3 dB HL, range, 8.75–26.25 dB HL) participated in this experiment. We constructed and analyzed the causal connectivity networks based on functional magnetic resonance imaging data of these participants. Two-sample t-tests revealed significant changes of causal connections and nodal degrees in the right secondary visual cortex, associative visual cortex, right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, left subgenual cortex, and the left cingulate cortex, as well as the shortest causal connectivity paths from the right secondary visual cortex to Broca’s area in hearing loss patients. Neuropsychological tests indicated that hearing loss patients presented significant cognitive decline. Pearson’s correlation analysis indicated that changes of nodal degrees and the shortest causal connectivity paths were significantly related with poor cognitive performances. We also found a cross-modal reorganization between associative visual cortex and auditory cortex in patients with hearing loss. Additionally, we noted that visual and auditory signals had different effects on neural activities of Broca’s area, respectively. These results suggest that changes in brain causal connectivity network are an important neuroimaging mark of cognitive decline. Our findings provide some implications for rehabilitation of hearing loss patients.

Visuospatial and Tactile Working Memory in Individuals with Congenital Deafness

Studies examining visuospatial working memory (WM) in individuals with congenital deafness have yielded inconsistent results, and tactile WM has rarely been examined. The current study examined WM span tasks in the two modalities among 20 individuals with congenital deafness and 20 participants with typical hearing. The congenital deafness group had longer forward and backward spans than typical hearing participants in a computerized Corsi block-tapping test (Visuospatial Span), whereas no such difference was found in the Tactual Span (tactile WM). In the congenital deafness group, age of sign language acquisition was not correlated with either condition of the visuospatial task, and Tactual and Visuospatial Spans scores were correlated in the backward but not the forward condition. The typical hearing group showed no correlation between the tasks. The findings suggest that early deafness leads to visuospatial but not tactile superiority in WM, specifically with respect to the storage component. More broadly, it appears that deafness-related compensation mechanisms in WM do not affect the other modalities in a uniform manner.

Reorganization of auditory-visual network interactions in long-term unilateral postlingual hearing loss

Long-term unilateral hearing loss could reorganize the functional network association between the bilateral auditory cortices, while alterations of other functional networks need to be further explored. We attempted to investigate the pattern of the reorganization of functional network associations between the auditory and visual cortex caused by long-term postlingual unilateral hearing loss (UHI) and its relationship with clinical characteristics. Therefore, 48 patients with hearing loss caused by unilateral acoustic tumors and 52 matched healthy controls were enrolled, and their high-resolution structural MRI and resting-state functional MRI data were also collected to depict the brain network. Degree centrality (DC) was employed to evaluate the functional network association of the auditory-visual network interaction. Group comparisons were performed to investigate the network reorganization, and its correlations with clinical data were calculated. Compared with the healthy control group, patients with UHI showed significantly increased DC between the auditory network (superior temporal gyrus and the medial geniculate body) and the visual network. Meanwhile, this difference was positively correlated with the extent of hearing impairment, and the correlation was more significant with the ipsilateral superior temporal gyrus in cases of acoustic neuroma. These results suggest that long-term unilateral hearing impairment may lead to enhancement of the visual-auditory network interactions and that the degree of reorganization is positively correlated with the pure tone average (PTA) and is more significant for the ipsilateral superior temporal gyrus, which provides clinical evidence regarding cross-modal plasticity in the UHI and its lateralization.

Working memory network plasticity after exercise intervention detected by task and resting-state functional MRI

The current study examined the effects of an 11-week exercise intervention on brain activity during a working memory (WM) task and resting-state functional network connectivity in deaf children. Twenty-six deaf children were randomly assigned to either an 11-week exercise intervention or control conditions. Before and after the exercise intervention, all participants were scanned with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during N-back task performance and a resting state. The behavioural results showed that the exercise intervention improved WM performance. Task activation analyses showed an increase in the parietal, occipital, and temporal gyri and hippocampus and hippocampus (HIP). In addition, WM performance improvements were associated with greater activation in the left HIP region. Resting-state functional connectivity (Rs-FC) between HIP and certain other brain areas shown a significant interaction of group (exercise versus no exercise) and time (pre- and postintervention). Moreover, connectivity between the left HIP and left middle frontal gyrus was related to improved WM performance. These data extend current knowledge by indicating that an exercise intervention can improve WM in deaf children, and these enhancements may be related to the WM network plasticity changes induced by exercise.

Effects of deafness and sign language experience on the human brain: voxel-based and surface-based morphometry

We investigated how deafness and sign language experience affect the human brain by comparing neuroanatomical structures across congenitally deaf signers (n = 30), hearing native signers (n = 30), and hearing sign-naïve controls (n = 30). Both voxel-based and surface-based morphometry results revealed deafness-related structural changes in visual cortices (grey matter), right frontal lobe (gyrification), and left Heschl's gyrus (white matter). The comparisons also revealed changes associated with lifelong signing experience: expansions in the surface area within left anterior temporal and left occipital lobes, and a reduction in cortical thickness in the right occipital lobe for deaf and hearing signers. Structural changes within these brain regions may be related to adaptations in the neural networks involved in processing signed language (e.g. visual perception of face and body movements). Hearing native signers also had unique neuroanatomical changes (e.g. reduced gyrification in premotor areas), perhaps due to lifelong experience with both a spoken and a signed language.

Cortical Deafness Due to Ischaemic Strokes in Both Temporal Lobes

Cortical deafness is a clinical rarity whereby a patient is unresponsive to all types of sounds despite the preserved integrity of the peripheral hearing organs. In this study, we present a patient who suddenly lost his hearing following ischaemic infarcts in both temporal lobes with no other neurological deficits. The CT confirmed damage to the primary auditory cortex (Heschl’s gyrus) of both hemispheres. Initially, the patient was unresponsive to all sounds, however, he regained some of the auditory abilities during 10 months follow up. Pure tone threshold improvement from complete deafness to the level of moderate hearing loss in the right ear and severe in the left was observed in pure tone audiometry. Otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem responses, and acoustic reflex findings showed normal results. The middle and late latency potential results confirmed objectively the improvement of the patient’s hearing, however, after 10 months still, they were somewhat compromised on both sides. In speech audiometry, there was no comprehension of spoken words neither at 3 nor at 10 months. The absent mismatch negativity confirmed above mentioned comprehension deficit. The extensive auditory electrophysiological testing presented in this study contributes to the understanding of the neural and functional changes in cortical deafness. It presents the evolution of changes after ischaemic cerebrovascular event expressed as auditory evoked potentials starting from short through middle and long latency and ending with event-related potentials and supported by neuroimaging.

Evidence of an Effect of Gaming Experience on Visuospatial Attention in Deaf but Not in Hearing Individuals

Auditory cortex in congenitally deaf early sign language users reorganizes to support cognitive processing in the visual domain. However, evidence suggests that the potential benefits of this reorganization are largely unrealized. At the same time, there is growing evidence that experience of playing computer and console games improves visual cognition, in particular visuospatial attentional processes. In the present study, we investigated in a group of deaf early signers whether those who reported recently playing computer or console games (deaf gamers) had better visuospatial attentional control than those who reported not playing such games (deaf non-gamers), and whether any such effect was related to cognitive processing in the visual domain. Using a classic test of attentional control, the Eriksen Flanker task, we found that deaf gamers performed on a par with hearing controls, while the performance of deaf non-gamers was poorer. Among hearing controls there was no effect of gaming. This suggests that deaf gamers may have better visuospatial attentional control than deaf non-gamers, probably because they are less susceptible to parafoveal distractions. Future work should examine the robustness of this potential gaming benefit and whether it is associated with neural plasticity in early deaf signers, as well as whether gaming intervention can improve visuospatial cognition in deaf people.

Frontal Cortical Modulation of Temporal Visual Cross-Modal Re-organization in Adults with Hearing Loss

Recent research has demonstrated frontal cortical involvement to co-occur with visual re-organization, suggestive of top-down modulation of cross-modal mechanisms. However, it is unclear whether top-down modulation of visual re-organization takes place in mild hearing loss, or is dependent upon greater degrees of hearing loss severity. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine if frontal top-down modulation of visual cross-modal re-organization increased across hearing loss severity. We recorded visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to apparent motion stimuli in 17 adults with mild-moderate hearing loss using 128-channel high-density electroencephalography (EEG). Current density reconstructions (CDRs) were generated using sLORETA to visualize VEP generators in both groups. VEP latency and amplitude in frontal regions of interest (ROIs) were compared between groups and correlated with auditory behavioral measures. Activation of frontal networks in response to visual stimulation increased across mild to moderate hearing loss, with simultaneous activation of the temporal cortex. In addition, group differences in VEP latency and amplitude correlated with auditory behavioral measures. Overall, these findings support the hypothesis that frontal top-down modulation of visual cross-modal re-organization is dependent upon hearing loss severity.

[Effects of olfactory deprivation on action potential and ankyrin-G expression in glutamatergic neurons in the barrel cortex of mice]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate effect of upregulated touch sensation induced by olfactory deprivation on action potentials and ankyrin-G expression in the glutamatergic neurons in the barrel cortex of mice.

METHODS

Chloroform (40 μL) was dropped into the unilateral nasal cavity to induce olfactory deprivation in 40 C57 mice (12 days old), whose glutamatergic neurons were genetically labeled with yellow fluorescent protein (YFP). Behavioral experiments were carried out to assess the effects of olfactory deprivation on whisker tactile of the mice. The action potentials of the glutamatergic neurons in the barrel cortex on the side with or without chloroform treatment (olfactory deprivation group and control group, respectively) were recorded by patch-clamp electrophysiological recording, and ankyrin-G expression in the proximal axonal segment of the neurons was detected with immunohistochemistry.

RESULTS

Compared with those on the control side, the inter-spike intervals of the barrel glutamatergic neurons were significantly decreased and the absolute refractory periods were significantly shortened on the side with olfactory deprivation (P < 0.01); the expression of ankyrin-G was also significantly increased in the proximal axonal segment of the glutamatergic neurons in the barrel cortex on the side with olfactory deprivation (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Olfaction deprivation induces up-regulation of touch sensation in mice possibly as a result of functional enhancement of the glutamatergic neurons and increased ankyrin-G expression in the barrel cortex.

Hemispheric Asymmetries in Deaf and Hearing During Sustained Peripheral Selective Attention

Previous studies have shown that compared to hearing individuals, early deaf individuals allocate relatively more attention to the periphery than central visual field. However, it is not clear whether these two groups also differ in their ability to selectively attend to specific peripheral locations. We examined deaf and hearing participants' selective attention using electroencephalography (EEG) and a frequency tagging paradigm, in which participants attended to one of two peripheral displays of moving dots that changed directions at different rates. Both participant groups showed similar amplifications and reductions in the EEG signal at the attended and unattended frequencies, indicating similar control over their peripheral attention for motion stimuli. However, for deaf participants these effects were larger in a right hemispheric region of interest (ROI), while for hearing participants these effects were larger in a left ROI. These results contribute to a growing body of evidence for a right hemispheric processing advantage in deaf populations when attending to motion.

The impact of early language exposure on the neural system supporting language in deaf and hearing adults

Deaf late signers provide a unique perspective on the impact of impoverished early language exposure on the neurobiology of language: insights that cannot be gained from research with hearing people alone. Here we contrast the effect of age of sign language acquisition in hearing and congenitally deaf adults to examine the potential impact of impoverished early language exposure on the neural systems supporting a language learnt later in life. We collected fMRI data from deaf and hearing proficient users (N ​= ​52) of British Sign Language (BSL), who learnt BSL either early (native) or late (after the age of 15 years) whilst they watched BSL sentences or strings of meaningless nonsense signs.

There was a main effect of age of sign language acquisition (late ​> ​early) across deaf and hearing signers in the occipital segment of the left intraparietal sulcus. This finding suggests that late learners of sign language may rely on visual processing more than early learners, when processing both linguistic and nonsense sign input – regardless of hearing status. Region-of-interest analyses in the posterior superior temporal cortices (STC) showed an effect of age of sign language acquisition that was specific to deaf signers. In the left posterior STC, activation in response to signed sentences was greater in deaf early signers than deaf late signers. Importantly, responses in the left posterior STC in hearing early and late signers did not differ, and were similar to those observed in deaf early signers. These data lend further support to the argument that robust early language experience, whether signed or spoken, is necessary for left posterior STC to show a ‘native-like’ response to a later learnt language.

Cross-modal plasticity in adult single-sided deafness revealed by alpha band resting-state functional connectivity

Single-sided deafness (SSD) or profound unilateral hearing loss is the condition where the transfer of acoustic information to the brain is restricted to one ear. SSD impairment is most evident under adverse acoustic environments with overlapping interference, which burdens cognitive resources. It is known that bilateral deafness induces cross-modal brain plasticity within visual cortical areas. Here we investigate whether similar cross-modal plasticity is observed in adult-onset SSD. In SSD patients (n ​= ​29) and matched controls (n ​= ​29) we estimated voxel level resting-state power and functional connectivity in the alpha band (8-12 ​Hz) from magnetoencephalography (MEG) data. We examined both global functional connectivity (mean functional connectivity of each voxel with the rest of the brain), and seeded functional connectivity of primary auditory cortices (A1), primary visual cortices (V1) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) of the default mode network (DMN). Power reduction was observed in left auditory cortex. Global functional connectivity showed reduction in frontal cortices and enhancement in visual cortex. Seeded functional connectivity of auditory cortices showed reduction in temporal, frontal and occipital regions, and enhancement in parietal cortex. Interestingly, seeded functional connectivity of visual cortices showed enhancement in visual cortices, inferior parietal lobe, post-central gyrus, and the precuneus, and reduction in auditory cortex. Seeded functional connectivity of PCC showed reduction in frontal cortical regions that are part of the DMN, attention, and working memory networks. Adult-onset SSD exhibited widespread cross-modal brain plasticity involving alterations in auditory, visual, attention, working memory and default mode networks.

Effects of Early Language Deprivation on Brain Connectivity: Language Pathways in Deaf Native and Late First-Language Learners of American Sign Language

Previous research has identified ventral and dorsal white matter tracts as being crucial for language processing; their maturation correlates with increased language processing capacity. Unknown is whether the growth or maintenance of these language-relevant pathways is shaped by language experience in early life. To investigate the effects of early language deprivation and the sensory-motor modality of language on white matter tracts, we examined the white matter connectivity of language-relevant pathways in congenitally deaf people with or without early access to language. We acquired diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data from two groups of individuals who experienced language from birth, twelve deaf native signers of American Sign Language, and twelve hearing L2 signers of ASL (native English speakers), and from three, well-studied individual cases who experienced minimal language during childhood. The results indicate that the sensory-motor modality of early language experience does not affect the white matter microstructure between crucial language regions. Both groups with early language experience, deaf and hearing, show leftward laterality in the two language-related tracts. However, all three cases with early language deprivation showed altered white matter microstructure, especially in the left dorsal arcuate fasciculus (AF) pathway.

Poorer Speech Reception Threshold in Noise Is Associated With Lower Brain Volume in Auditory and Cognitive Processing Regions

Purpose Hearing loss is associated with changes in brain volume in regions supporting auditory and cognitive processing. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a systematic association between hearing ability and brain volume in cross-sectional data from a large nonclinical cohort of middle-aged adults available from the UK Biobank Resource ( http://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk ). Method We performed a set of regression analyses to determine the association between speech reception threshold in noise (SRTn) and global brain volume as well as predefined regions of interest (ROIs) based on T1-weighted structural images, controlling for hearing-related comorbidities and cognition as well as demographic factors. In a 2nd set of analyses, we additionally controlled for hearing aid (HA) use. We predicted statistically significant associations globally and in ROIs including auditory and cognitive processing regions, possibly modulated by HA use. Results Whole-brain gray matter volume was significantly lower for individuals with poorer SRTn. Furthermore, the volume of 9 predicted ROIs including both auditory and cognitive processing regions was lower for individuals with poorer SRTn. The greatest percentage difference (-0.57%) in ROI volume relating to a 1 SD worsening of SRTn was found in the left superior temporal gyrus. HA use did not substantially modulate the pattern of association between brain volume and SRTn. Conclusions In a large middle-aged nonclinical population, poorer hearing ability is associated with lower brain volume globally as well as in cortical and subcortical regions involved in auditory and cognitive processing, but there was no conclusive evidence that this effect is moderated by HA use. This pattern of results supports the notion that poor hearing leads to reduced volume in brain regions recruited during speech understanding under challenging conditions. Orthographic Priming in Braille Reading as Evidence for Task-specific Reorganization in the Ventral Visual Cortex of the Congenitally Blind

The task-specific principle asserts that, following deafness or blindness, the deprived cortex is reorganized in a manner such that the task of a given area is preserved even though its input modality has been switched. Accordingly, tactile reading engages the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) in the blind in a similar way to regular reading in the sighted. Others, however, show that the vOT of the blind processes spoken sentence structure, which suggests that the task-specific principle might not apply to vOT. The strongest evidence for the vOT's engagement in sighted reading comes from orthographic repetition-suppression studies. Here, congenitally blind adults were tested in an fMRI repetition-suppression paradigm. Results reveal a double dissociation, with tactile orthographic priming in the vOT and auditory priming in general language areas. Reconciling our finding with other evidence, we propose that the vOT in the blind serves multiple functions, one of which, orthographic processing, overlaps with its function in the sighted.

Prefrontal-Temporal Pathway Mediates the Cross-Modal and Cognitive Reorganization in Sensorineural Hearing Loss With or Without Tinnitus: A Multimodal MRI Study

Objective: Hearing loss, one main risk factor of tinnitus and hyperacusis, is believed to involve significant central functional abnormalities. The recruitment of the auditory cortex in non-auditory sensory and higher-order cognitive processing has been demonstrated in the hearing-deprived brain. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), which has dense anatomical connections with the auditory pathway, is known to play a crucial role in multi-sensory integration, auditory regulation, and cognitive processing. This study aimed to verify the role of the dlPFC in the cross-modal reorganization and cognitive participation of the auditory cortex in long-term sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) by combining functional and structural measurements.

Methods: Thirty five patients with long-term bilateral SNHL and 35 matched healthy controls underwent structural imaging, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and neuropsychological assessments. Ten SNHL patients were with subjective tinnitus.

Results: No differences in gray matter volume, spontaneous neural activity, or diffusion characteristics in the dlPFC were found between the SNHL and control groups. The functional connectivity (FC) between the dlPFC and the auditory cortex and visual areas, such as the cuneus, fusiform, lingual cortex, and calcarine sulcus was increased in patients with SNHL. ANOVA and post hoc tests revealed similar FC alterations in the SNHL patients with and without tinnitus when compared with the normal hearing controls, and SNHL patients with and without tinnitus showed no difference in the dlPFC FC. The FC in the auditory cortex was associated with the symbol digit modality test (SDMT) scores in the SNHL patients, which reflect attentional function, processing speed, and visual working memory. Hearing-related FC with the dlPFC was found in the lingual cortex. A tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) analysis revealed decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) values, mainly in the temporal inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), which showed remarkable negative correlations with the mean hearing thresholds in SNHL.

Conclusion: Higher functional coupling between the dlPFC and auditory and visual areas, accompanied by decreased FA along the IFOF connecting the frontal cortex and the occipito-temporal area, might mediate cross-modal plasticity via top-down regulation and facilitate the involvement of the auditory cortex in higher-order cognitive processing following long-term SNHL.

A Predictive Model for Cochlear Implant Outcome in Children with Cochlear Nerve Deficiency

The outcome of cochlear implantation (CI) in patients with cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) is variable, resulting in a wide range of speech perception performance, from degrees of environmental sound perception to conversation without lip-reading. Twenty-five cochlear implantees with CND were enrolled retrospectively to determine the factors correlated with CI outcome in patients with CND and to develop a predictive model for CI outcome. CI outcome was evaluated using the Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) score at 2 years after CI. Patients with negative auditory brainstem response (ABR) showed a significantly lower CAP score than those with positive ABR (2.5 ± 1.7, 4.8 ± 0.7; p = 0.001). The area ratio of vestibulocochlear nerve (VCN) to facial nerve (FN) at the cerebellopontine angle on magnetic resonance images was positively correlated with CI outcome (p < 0.001). We found that preoperative ABR and area ratio of VCN to FN at the cerebellopontine angle could predict CI outcome in patients with CND. Preoperative counselling based on our predictive model might be helpful to determine treatment modality for auditory rehabilitation and which ear to implant.

The power of language: Functional brain network topology of deaf and hearing in relation to sign language experience

Prolonged auditory sensory deprivation leads to brain reorganization. This is indicated by functional enhancement in remaining sensory systems and known as cross-modal plasticity. In this study we investigated differences in functional brain network topology between deaf and hearing individuals. We also studied altered functional network responses between deaf and hearing individuals with a recording paradigm containing an eyes-closed and eyes-open condition. Electroencephalography activity was recorded in a group of sign language-trained deaf (N = 71) and hearing people (N = 122) living in rural Africa. Functional brain networks were constructed from the functional connectivity between fourteen electrodes distributed over the scalp. Functional connectivity was quantified with the phase lag index based on bandpass filtered epochs of brain signal. We studied the functional connectivity between the auditory, somatosensory and visual cortex and performed whole-brain minimum spanning tree analysis to capture network backbone characteristics. Functional connectivity between different regions involved in sensory information processing tended to be stronger in deaf people during the eyes-closed condition in both the alpha and beta frequency band. Furthermore, we found differences in functional backbone topology between deaf and hearing individuals. The backbone topology altered during transition from the eyes-closed to eyes-open condition irrespective of deafness, but was more pronounced in deaf individuals. The transition of backbone strength was different between individuals with congenital, pre-lingual or post-lingual deafness. Functional backbone characteristics correlated with the experience of sign language. Overall, our study revealed more insights in functional network reorganization caused by auditory deprivation and cross-modal plasticity. It further supports the idea of a brain plasticity potential in deaf and hearing people. The association between network organization and acquired sign language experience reflects the ability of ongoing brain adaptation in people with hearing disabilities.

Functional and Structural Brain Plasticity in Adult Onset Single-Sided Deafness

Single-sided deafness (SSD) or profound unilateral hearing loss obligates the only serviceable ear to capture all acoustic information. This loss of binaural function taxes cognitive resources for accurate listening performance, especially under adverse environments or challenging tasks. We hypothesized that adults with SSD would manifest both functional and structural brain plasticity compared to controls with normal binaural hearing. We evaluated functional alterations using magnetoencephalographic imaging (MEGI) of brain activation during performance of a moderately difficult auditory syllable sequence reproduction task and assessed structural integrity using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). MEGI showed the SSD cohort to have increased induced oscillations in the theta band over the left superior temporal cortex and decreased induced gamma band oscillations over the frontal and parietal cortices between 175 and 475 ms following stimulus onset. DTI showed the SSD cohort to have extensive fractional anisotropy (FA) reduction in both auditory and non-auditory tracts and regions. Overlaying functional and structural changes revealed by the two imaging techniques demonstrated close registration of cortical areas and white matter tracts that expressed brain plasticity. Hence, complete loss of input from one ear in adulthood triggers both functional and structural alterations to dorsal temporal and frontal-parietal areas.

Working Memory for Linguistic and Non-linguistic Manual Gestures: Evidence, Theory, and Application

Linguistic manual gestures are the basis of sign languages used by deaf individuals. Working memory and language processing are intimately connected and thus when language is gesture-based, it is important to understand related working memory mechanisms. This article reviews work on working memory for linguistic and non-linguistic manual gestures and discusses theoretical and applied implications. Empirical evidence shows that there are effects of load and stimulus degradation on working memory for manual gestures. These effects are similar to those found for working memory for speech-based language. Further, there are effects of pre-existing linguistic representation that are partially similar across language modalities. But above all, deaf signers score higher than hearing non-signers on an n-back task with sign-based stimuli, irrespective of their semantic and phonological content, but not with non-linguistic manual actions. This pattern may be partially explained by recent findings relating to cross-modal plasticity in deaf individuals. It suggests that in linguistic gesture-based working memory, semantic aspects may outweigh phonological aspects when processing takes place under challenging conditions. The close association between working memory and language development should be taken into account in understanding and alleviating the challenges faced by deaf children growing up with cochlear implants as well as other clinical populations.

The Functional Architecture of the Brain Underlies Strategic Deception in Impression Management

Impression management, as one of the most essential skills of social function, impacts one's survival and success in human societies. However, the neural architecture underpinning this social skill remains poorly understood. By employing a two-person bargaining game, we exposed three strategies involving distinct cognitive processes for social impression management with different levels of strategic deception. We utilized a novel adaptation of Granger causality accounting for signal-dependent noise (SDN), which captured the directional connectivity underlying the impression management during the bargaining game. We found that the sophisticated strategists engaged stronger directional connectivity from both dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and retrosplenial cortex to rostral prefrontal cortex, and the strengths of these directional influences were associated with higher level of deception during the game. Using the directional connectivity as a neural signature, we identified the strategic deception with 80% accuracy by a machine-learning classifier. These results suggest that different social strategies are supported by distinct patterns of directional connectivity among key brain regions for social cognition.

Increased cross-modal functional connectivity in cochlear implant users

Previous studies have reported increased cross-modal auditory and visual cortical activation in cochlear implant (CI) users, suggesting cross-modal reorganization of both visual and auditory cortices in CI users as a consequence of sensory deprivation and restoration. How these processes affect the functional connectivity of the auditory and visual system in CI users is however unknown. We here investigated task-induced intra-modal functional connectivity between hemispheres for both visual and auditory cortices and cross-modal functional connectivity between visual and auditory cortices using functional near infrared spectroscopy in post-lingually deaf CI users and age-matched normal hearing controls. Compared to controls, CI users exhibited decreased intra-modal functional connectivity between hemispheres and increased cross-modal functional connectivity between visual and left auditory cortices for both visual and auditory stimulus processing. Importantly, the difference between cross-modal functional connectivity for visual and for auditory stimuli correlated with speech recognition outcome in CI users. Higher cross-modal connectivity for auditory than for visual stimuli was associated with better speech recognition abilities, pointing to a new pattern of functional reorganization that is related to successful hearing restoration with a CI.

How Auditory Experience Differentially Influences the Function of Left and Right Superior Temporal Cortices

To investigate how hearing status, sign language experience, and task demands influence functional responses in the human superior temporal cortices (STC) we collected fMRI data from deaf and hearing participants (male and female), who either acquired sign language early or late in life. Our stimuli in all tasks were pictures of objects. We varied the linguistic and visuospatial processing demands in three different tasks that involved decisions about (1) the sublexical (phonological) structure of the British Sign Language (BSL) signs for the objects, (2) the semantic category of the objects, and (3) the physical features of the objects.

Neuroimaging data revealed that in participants who were deaf from birth, STC showed increased activation during visual processing tasks. Importantly, this differed across hemispheres. Right STC was consistently activated regardless of the task whereas left STC was sensitive to task demands. Significant activation was detected in the left STC only for the BSL phonological task. This task, we argue, placed greater demands on visuospatial processing than the other two tasks. In hearing signers, enhanced activation was absent in both left and right STC during all three tasks. Lateralization analyses demonstrated that the effect of deafness was more task-dependent in the left than the right STC whereas it was more task-independent in the right than the left STC. These findings indicate how the absence of auditory input from birth leads to dissociable and altered functions of left and right STC in deaf participants.

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Those born deaf can offer unique insights into neuroplasticity, in particular in regions of superior temporal cortex (STC) that primarily respond to auditory input in hearing people. Here we demonstrate that in those deaf from birth the left and the right STC have altered and dissociable functions. The right STC was activated regardless of demands on visual processing. In contrast, the left STC was sensitive to the demands of visuospatial processing. Furthermore, hearing signers, with the same sign language experience as the deaf participants, did not activate the STCs. Our data advance current understanding of neural plasticity by determining the differential effects that hearing status and task demands can have on left and right STC function.

Cross-Modal Plasticity in Higher-Order Auditory Cortex of Congenitally Deaf Cats Does Not Limit Auditory Responsiveness to Cochlear Implants

Congenital sensory deprivation can lead to reorganization of the deprived cortical regions by another sensory system. Such cross-modal reorganization may either compete with or complement the "original" inputs to the deprived area after sensory restoration and can thus be either adverse or beneficial for sensory restoration. In congenital deafness, a previous inactivation study documented that supranormal visual behavior was mediated by higher-order auditory fields in congenitally deaf cats (CDCs). However, both the auditory responsiveness of "deaf" higher-order fields and interactions between the reorganized and the original sensory input remain unknown. Here, we studied a higher-order auditory field responsible for the supranormal visual function in CDCs, the auditory dorsal zone (DZ). Hearing cats and visual cortical areas served as a control. Using mapping with microelectrode arrays, we demonstrate spatially scattered visual (cross-modal) responsiveness in the DZ, but show that this did not interfere substantially with robust auditory responsiveness elicited through cochlear implants. Visually responsive and auditory-responsive neurons in the deaf auditory cortex formed two distinct populations that did not show bimodal interactions. Therefore, cross-modal plasticity in the deaf higher-order auditory cortex had limited effects on auditory inputs. The moderate number of scattered cross-modally responsive neurons could be the consequence of exuberant connections formed during development that were not pruned postnatally in deaf cats. Although juvenile brain circuits are modified extensively by experience, the main driving input to the cross-modally (visually) reorganized higher-order auditory cortex remained auditory in congenital deafness.

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT

In a common view, the "unused" auditory cortex of deaf individuals is reorganized to a compensatory sensory function during development. According to this view, cross-modal plasticity takes over the unused cortex and reassigns it to the remaining senses. Therefore, cross-modal plasticity might conflict with restoration of auditory function with cochlear implants. It is unclear whether the cross-modally reorganized auditory areas lose auditory responsiveness. We show that the presence of cross-modal plasticity in a higher-order auditory area does not reduce auditory responsiveness of that area. Visual reorganization was moderate, spatially scattered and there were no interactions between cross-modally reorganized visual and auditory inputs. These results indicate that cross-modal reorganization is less detrimental for neurosensory restoration than previously thought.
