Abstract
BACKGROUND Distinguishing untreated major depressive disorder without medication (MDD) from schizophrenia with depressed mood (SZDM) poses a clinical challenge. This study aims to investigate differences in fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) and cognition in untreated MDD and SZDM patients. METHODS The study included 42 untreated MDD cases, 30 SZDM patients, and 46 healthy controls (HC). Cognitive assessment utilized the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans were conducted, and data were processed using fALFF in slow-4 and slow-5 bands. RESULTS Significant fALFF changes were observed in four brain regions across MDD, SZDM, and HC groups for both slow-4 and slow-5 fALFF. Compared to SZDM, the MDD group showed increased slow-5 fALFF in the right gyrus rectus (RGR). Relative to HC, SZDM exhibited decreased slow-5 fALFF in the left gyrus rectus (LGR) and increased slow-5 fALFF in the right putamen. Changes in slow-5 fALFF in both RGR and LGR were negatively correlated with RBANS scores. No significant correlations were found between remaining fALFF (slow-4 and slow-5 bands) and RBANS scores in MDD or SZDM groups. CONCLUSIONS Alterations in slow-5 fALFF in RGR may serve as potential biomarkers for distinguishing MDD from SZDM, providing preliminary insights into the neural mechanisms of cognitive function in schizophrenia.

Abstract
The association between plasma amyloid-beta protein (Aβ) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) remains controversial. We aimed to explore the correlation between neuroimaging findings, plasma Aβ, and neuropsychological scales using data from 53 SCD patients and 46 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to obtain neuroimaging data for a whole-brain voxel-based morphometry analysis and cortical functional network topological features. The SCD group had slightly lower Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores than the HC group. The Aβ42 levels were significantly higher in the SCD group than in the HC group (p < 0.05). The SCD patients demonstrated reduced volumes in the left hippocampus, right rectal gyrus (REC.R), and right precentral gyrus (PreCG.R); an increased percentage fluctuation in the left thalamus (PerAF); and lower average small-world coefficient (aSigma) and average global efficiency (aEg) values. Correlation analyses with Aβ and neuropsychological scales revealed significant positive correlations between the volumes of the HIP.L, REC.R, PreCG.R, and MoCA scores. The HIP.L volume and Aβ42 were negatively correlated, as were the REC.R volume and Aβ42/40. PerAF and aSigma were negatively and positively correlated with the MoCA scores, respectively. The aEg was positively correlated with Aβ42/40. SCD patients may exhibit alterations in plasma biomarkers and multi-parameter MRI that resemble those observed in Alzheimer's disease, offering a theoretical foundation for early clinical intervention in SCD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate resting-state interhemispheric functional connectivity in patients with schizophrenia and refractory auditory verbal hallucinations (RAVHs) by using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC). METHODS Thirty-four patients with schizophrenia and RAVHs (RAVH group), 23 patients with schizophrenia but no auditory verbal hallucinations (non-AVH group), and 28 matched healthy volunteers (healthy control group) were recruited in China. VMHC analyses were used to identify brain areas with significant differences in functional connectivity among the three groups, and correlations between symptom scores and neurological measures were examined. RESULTS VMHC analyses showed aberrant bilateral connectivity between several homotopic brain regions: the RAVH and non-AVH groups showed differences in bilateral connectivity of the superior and middle temporal gyri, and the RAVH and healthy control groups showed differences in bilateral connectivity of the gyrus rectus, inferior frontal gyrus, and putamen. In addition, interhemispheric connectivity of the superior and middle temporal gyri correlated with patients' positive symptom scores. CONCLUSIONS These findings may help to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying auditory verbal hallucinations. The results revealed interhemispheric functional dysconnectivity among patients with schizophrenia and suggest that the dysconnectivity of homotopic brain regions may play an important role in the development of auditory verbal hallucinations.
