Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the effect of 6, 12, and 24 h short-term anaerobic treatment on kiwiberry quality and antioxidant properties at 5 °C. RESULTS Short-term anaerobic treatment was found to delay ripening and softening in kiwiberries, evident from changes in ethylene release, total soluble solids, starch, protopectin, and fruit texture. The 24 h treatment group exhibited the lowest decay rate of 12% on day 49, a 38% reduction compared with the control group. Anaerobic treatment reduced flesh translucency and decay in the fruit. The 12 h and 24 h treatments enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase, and increased the level of total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and ascorbic acid. Moreover, it lowered oxidative damage in cell membranes, evidenced by reduced malondialdehyde content and relative conductivity. CONCLUSION These results indicate that anaerobic treatment maintains the fruit quality by stimulating its antioxidant defense system. Therefore, short-term anaerobic treatment emerges as a promising method for kiwiberry storage. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the impact of L-arginine (Arg) on the development of resistance to Alternaria tenuissima (A. tenuissima) in blueberries. The metabolism of reactive oxygen species, pathogenesis-related proteins (PRs), and jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis pathways were analyzed, including changes in activity and gene expression of key enzymes. The results indicated that Arg treatment could prevent the development of Alternaria fruit rot in postharvest blueberries. In addition, it was also found to induce a burst of hydrogen peroxide in the blueberries early on during storage, thereby improving their resistance to A. tenuissima. Arg treatment was observed to increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase) and related gene expression, as well as the total levels of phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanin in the blueberries. The activity and gene expression of the PRs (chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase) were elevated in Arg-treated blueberries, boosting their resistance to pathogens. Additionally, a surge in endogenous JA content was detected in Arg-treated blueberries, along with upregulated expression of key genes related the JA biosynthesis pathway (VcLOX1, VcAOS1, VcAOC, VcAOC3, VcOPR1, VcOPR3, VcMYC2, and VcCOI1), thereby further bolstering disease resistance. In conclusion, Arg treatment was determined to be a promising prospective method for controlling Alternaria fruit rot in blueberries.

Abstract
Gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea is a major cause of post-harvest rot of fresh fruits and vegetables. The utilization of selected microorganisms as biocontrol agents is a promising alternative to effectively control gray mold on tomatoes. The current study was conducted to explore potential biocontrol mechanisms of the Pseudomonas strain to control infections on post-harvest tomatoes. Among the 8 tested bacterial isolates, Pseudomonas protegens ML15 demonstrated antagonistic activity to Botrytis cinerea. Moreover, P. protegens ML15 exhibited the production of siderophores, hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, exopolysaccharides, lipase, biosurfactant, 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol, and several other antifungal compounds, such as 1-tetradecanol, cyclododecane, 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, and 2-methyl-1-hexadecanol. A comprehensive genomic analysis of P. protegens ML15 unravels 18 distinct genetic regions with the potential for biosynthesizing secondary metabolites, known for their pivotal role in biocontrol responses against plant pathogens. In vivo, experiments showed that both culture suspension and cell-free supernatant of P. protegens ML15 significantly reduced fungal growth (53.0 ± 0.63%) and mitigated disease development (52.8 ± 1.5%) in cherry tomatoes at four days post-B. cinerea inoculation. During the infection, the application of P. protegens ML15 resulted in the augmentation of total antioxidant, phenolic content, and ascorbic acids content. Thus, our results suggested that P. protegens ML15's role as a biocontrol agent against B. cinerea-induced postharvest tomato decay achieved through the secretion of antifungal substances, induction of tomato defense responses, and inhibition of mycelial growth of B. cinerea. These findings provide a significant contribution to the ongoing search for alternative, eco-friendly methods of controlling gray mold in fresh products. The utilization of P. protegens ML15 as a biocontrol agent could help to reduce the reliance on chemical fungicides and promote sustainable agriculture practices.

Abstract
Research of lactic acid bacteria and its metabolites on biological preservatives becomes a hot topic. Lactobacillus plantarum O2, with good inhibition on Phytophthora capsici (P. capsici), was isolated from the pickle. In this study, the effects of L. plantarum O2 fermentation supernatant (FS) on pepper postharvest preservation and its induced resistance to P. capsici were studied. Results showed that weight loss rate, rot index, respiration rate, relative electrical conductivity, loss of chlorophyll content and VC of pepper in FS treatment group were decreased by 18 %, 64 %, 15 %, 26 %, 33 % and 20 % compared with blank control (BC) after 20 d storage. L* and b*-value of pepper in FS group were lower than those in the BC group. In addition, the damage-induced resistance test found that the infection rate in the FS group was reduced by 39 %, compared with CK2 after 12 d storage. Moreover, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, peroxidase activity, polyphenol oxidase activity, proline content, total phenol content and flavonoid content increased by 14 %, 9 %, 30 %, 8 %, 8 % and 9 %, respectively, while malondialdehyde content decreased by 13 %. These results indicated that FS treatment showed good fresh-keeping effects on postharvest pepper. It could enhance the tolerance of pepper under stress by improving defensive enzyme activities, slowing down the damage caused by P. capsici, and inducing pepper resistance to P. capsici. Therefore, FS can be used as a microbial source bio-preservative for postharvest pepper.

Abstract
During storage, Aspergillus carbonarius (A. carbonarius) can easily infect grape berries, resulting in a pronounced decline in nutritional value and substantial economic loss for the grape industry. Characterised by broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, eugenol is proven to significantly inhibit A. carbonarius and ochratoxin A (OTA) in vitro. In this study, the potential mechanism of eugenol against A. carbonarius in grapes ('Kyoho') was evaluated using integrative transcriptomic and metabolomics analyses. After eugenol treatment at 50 mM, the inhibition of OTA was reduced by 100%, despite a 56.2% inhibition of A. carbonarius. In the meantime, mycelial growth was completely inhibited by 100 mM eugenol in grape berries. The application of eugenol to grapes stimulated the activity of several enzymes involved in disease resistance, namely catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), chitinase (CHI), β-1,3-glucanase (GLU), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL) and glutathione (GSH) content. In addition, the contents of abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) in eugenol-treated grapes were higher after A. carbonarius inoculation. Combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis revealed that in phenylpropane biosynthesis, there were a variety of differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and the plant hormone signalling pathway changed significantly. Among these, the levels of 47 polyphenol metabolites significantly increased in eugenol-treated grape berries compared to noneugenol-treated berries. Meanwhile, we investigated the transcript levels of 39 genes in 6 phytohormones signalling in response to eugenol-treated grape berries followed by A. carbonarius inoculation. These results suggest that eugenol positively improved the disease resistance of grapes and might be potentially beneficial for the prevention and treatment of A. carbonarius-caused disease.

Abstract
The emerging area of phototreatment technology has shown a significant potential to enhance the quality of fresh-cut fruit and vegetable products (FFVP). This review critically evaluates relevant literatures to address the potential for phototreatment technology (Red, blue, green, ultraviolet and pulsed light) applied to FFVP, outline the key to the success of phototreatment processing, and discuss the corresponding problems for phototreatment processing along with research and development needs. Base on photothermal, photophysical and photochemical process, phototreatment displays a great potential to maintain quality attributes of FFVP. The operating parameters of light, the surface properties and matrix components of the targeted material and the equipment design affect the quality of the fresh-cut products. To adapt current phototreatment technology to industrial FFVP processing, it is necessary to offset some limitations, especially control of harmful substances (For example, nitrite and furan) produced by phototreatment, comparison between different phototreatment technologies, and establishment of mathematical models/databases.

Pre-Harvest Application of Salicylic Acid, Abscisic Acid, and Methyl Jasmonate Conserve Bioactive Compounds of Strawberry Fruits during Refrigerated Storage. HORTICULTURAE 2021. Abstract
The short shelf-life and loss of bioactive compounds of strawberry fruit are the most important problems during strawberry refrigerated storage. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the pre-harvest foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) (2 and 4 mM), abscisic acid (ABA) (0.25 and 0.50 mM), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) (0.25 and 0.50 mM) three times, 10 d apart, at fruit development and ripening stages on storage ability and bioactive compounds of strawberry fruit (cv. Festival) stored at 4 °C for 12 d. Our results showed that fruit obtained from both concentrations of ABA and 0.25 mM MeJA was firmer and had higher total soluble solids (TSS) than fruit from non-treated plants. However, all previous applications had no significant effect on weight loss, pH, or color. Applications of 4 mM SA and 0.25 mM MeJA conserved fruit from ascorbic acid (AsA) loss compared to control at the end of the storage period. In addition, all pre-harvest applications remained higher in total phenolic compounds (TPC) and anthocyanin contents compared to controls at the last storage period. Hence, the pre-harvest application of SA, ABA, and MeJA could be used to conserve TPC and anthocyanin as well as the quality of strawberry fruits during refrigerated storage.
