Abstract
OBJECTIVES Mental and cognitive health is crucial to ensure well-being in older age. However, prolonged periods of stress, grief, and bereavement might compromise mental health balance, leading to profound changes. This study investigated the sex-stratified associations between midlife bereavement experiences (e.g. sibling loss, spousal loss, and multiple losses) and late-life depression (LLD) and cognitive impairment. METHOD Linked data from the Swedish Level-of-Living Survey and the Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old (SWEOLD) were used. Multiple logistic regressions were performed to examine the associations between midlife bereavement and LLD (n = 1078) and cognitive impairment (n = 995), separately. RESULTS Sibling loss and multiple losses in midlife were associated with lower odds of LLD, especially among women. Among men, sibling loss in midlife was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment, while the experience of two losses among women suggested an increased (but non-significant) risk of cognitive impairment. Interaction analyses did not show significant effects between bereavement and gender on LLD and cognitive impairment. CONCLUSION Midlife bereavement might have gendered implications on LLD and cognitive impairment, but associations need to be confirmed by well-powered studies. Further research is warranted to elucidate the association between multiple midlife losses and reduced LLD risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Recent studies show that chronic exposure to racial discrimination increases the occurrence of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) among Black Americans. Little research, however, has examined potential for protective factors, such as perceived partner support, to buffer these effects. METHODS This study utilized longitudinal data over a 10-year period from the Family and Community Health Study (FACHS) to examine the associations between experiences of racial discrimination, marital status, partner support, and SCD, measured by the Everyday Cognition (ECog) Scale, among 286 middle-aged Black American women. Regression analysis and internal moderator analyses were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS About 31% were in married relationships. Thirty-four percent reported cognitive decline, especially in forgetting object locations and dates. Chronic discrimination predicted SCD, and for those in couple relationships, partner support buffered the adverse effects of discrimination, with those in warm and supportive relationships experiencing less SCD than those in relatively unsupportive relationships or not in a relationship. CONCLUSIONS The study's findings support the idea that racism influences SCD and underscores the importance of supportive couple relationships in promoting resilience. The results also highlight the potential value of culturally relevant family interventions and support strategies to reduce the impact of discrimination-induced stress on cognitive health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Marital status is a potentially essential factor for cognitive impairment. Relevant research examining the potential pathways through which the marital status of spouseless older people is associated with cognitive impairment needs to be more adequate. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the serial mediating effects of various forms of social support and depression between marital status and cognitive impairment in older Chinese people. METHODS This study involved a secondary analysis of data from the 2014-2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), with a total of 2,647 Chinese older adults and 53.6% being males. Mediation analysis using the SPSS process macro was conducted. RESULTS The results indicated that marital status was significantly predictive of cognitive impairment among older people, and those with a spouse exhibited higher cognitive functioning. Informal social support and depression were found to play partial mediating roles in the association between marital status and cognitive impairment. The findings also revealed that marital status was unrelated to formal social support, and no association between formal social support and cognitive impairment was found. CONCLUSIONS The study findings highlight the need for social service providers to design programs for promoting connections associated with informal support to reduce their risk of depression and cognitive impairment and for policymakers to develop effective formal social support systems for older people without spouses. This study indicated that older people could regain the benefits of marriage to lower the risk of depression and improve their mental health.

Abstract
Background Cognitive impairment is a highly heterogeneous disorder that necessitates further investigation into the distinct characteristics of populations at varying risk levels of cognitive impairment. Using a large-scale registry cohort of elderly individuals, we applied a data-driven approach to identify novel clusters based on diverse sociodemographic features. Methods A prospective cohort of 6398 elderly people from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, followed between 2008-14, was used to develop and validate the model. Participants were aged ≥60 years, community-dwelling, and the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score ≥18 were included. Sixty-nine sociodemographic features were included in the analysis. The total population was divided into two-thirds for the derivation cohort (n = 4265) and one-third for the validation cohort (n = 2133). In the derivation cohort, an unsupervised Gaussian mixture model was applied to categorise participants into distinct clusters. A classifier was developed based on the most important 10 factors and was applied to categorise participants into their corresponding clusters in a validation cohort. The difference in the three-year risk of cognitive impairment was compared across the clusters. Results We identified four clusters with distinct features in the derivation cohort. Cluster 1 was associated with the worst life independence, longest sleep duration, and the oldest age. Cluster 2 demonstrated the highest loneliness, characterised by non-marital status and living alone. Cluster 3 was characterised by the lowest sense of loneliness and the highest proportions in marital status and family co-residence. Cluster 4 demonstrated heightened engagement in exercise and leisure activity, along with independent decision-making, hygiene, and a diverse diet. In comparison to Cluster 4, Cluster 1 exhibited the highest three-year cognitive impairment risk (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.31; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.81-6.05), followed by Cluster 2 and Cluster 3 after adjustment for baseline MMSE, residence, sex, age, years of education, drinking, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and stroke or cardiovascular diseases. Conclusions A data-driven approach can be instrumental in identifying individuals at high risk of cognitive impairment among cognitively normal elderly populations. Based on various sociodemographic features, these clusters can suggest individualised intervention plans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Living with a partner and separation is becoming more common among older people. Mortality disparities associated with marital status are significant in increasingly diverse aging populations. The link between marital status and all-cause mortality risk in older adults remains uncertain. METHODS This prospective cohort study included data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We included NHANES participants ≥ 60 years of age (data from 1999 to 2014). Data for mortality follow-up beginning from the commencement date of survey participation to the last day of December 2015. Univariate- and multivariate-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models for marital status were estimated, and the findings were presented as regression coefficients and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Kaplan-Meier curves were reported. RESULTS Compared to never married individuals, the risk of all-cause mortality was 0.77 (0.50-1.18), 0.72 (0.56-0.93), 0.56 (0.36-0.88), and 0.84 (0.67-1.07) in those people living with a partner, married, separated, and divorced, respectively, after adjusting for demographics, socioeconomics, behavior, anthropometric variables, and medical history. The risk of all-cause mortality was 1.24 (0.97-1.59) in widowed participants. CONCLUSION This population-based cohort study included a large sample size followed by long-term follow-up. The association between marriage, health, and reduced mortality in older individuals has been illustrated in this study. Being married or separated was associated with a lower risk of mortality.

Abstract
Objectives: Research suggests that the death of a spouse has an adverse effect on a widow(er)'s cognition. However, little research has examined how the marital context before widowhood and gender influence this association. Guided by the social ambivalence and disease (SAD) model, this study examined the associations between spousal loss and cognition , with moderating effects of gender and pre-loss marital quality.Method: We analyzed a national longitudinal data, Midlife in the United States (MIDUS), specifically MIDUS 2 (2004-2005) and MIDUS 3 (2013-2014). The analytic sample consisted of (1) 146 participants who experienced the death of their spouse between MIDUS 2 and MIDUS 3 and (2) 144 age- and gender-matched comparison participants who did not lose their spouse during the period.Results: Adverse influence of widowhood on cognition was more pronounced among bereaved men than bereaved women. Widowed individuals whose relationships with their deceased spouse were ambivalent had poorer cognition than widowed individuals who had aversive relationships with their deceased spouse.Conclusion: Findings suggest that the influence of spousal death on cognitive functioning depends on gender and pre-loss marital quality, emphasizing the importance of considering pre-loss marital relationship and gender dynamics in developing efficient interventions for the widowed.

Abstract
Hearing loss is a prevalent chronic stressor among older adults and is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes. The life course principle of linked lives highlights that an individual's stressors can impact the health and well-being of others; however, there are limited large-scale studies examining hearing loss within marital dyads. Using 11 waves (1998-2018) of the Health and Retirement Study (n = 4881 couples), we estimate age-based mixed models to examine how 1) one's own hearing, 2) one's spouse's hearing, or 3) both spouses' hearing influence changes in depressive symptoms. For men, their wives' hearing loss, their own hearing loss, and both spouses having hearing loss are associated with increased depressive symptoms. For women, their own hearing loss and both spouses having hearing loss are associated with increased depressive symptoms, but their husbands' hearing loss is not. The connections between hearing loss and depressive symptoms within couples are a dynamic process that unfolds differently by gender over time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examines the association between age at marital loss (i.e., divorce or widowhood) and cognitive function in later life and whether the association differs by gender. METHODS We used mixed-effects models, drawing on longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (1998-2016). The analytical samples included adults aged 51 and older who had ever been widowed (N = 5,639 with 25,537 person-waves) or divorced (N = 10,685 with 50,689 person-waves). RESULTS We find that those who were widowed at younger ages had lower cognitive function than their counterparts who were widowed at older ages, for both men and women, after controlling for covariates. Household income and health-related factors partially accounted for the positive association between age at widowhood and cognitive function. Those who divorced at younger ages also had lower cognitive function than their counterparts who divorced at older ages, but this association was only present among men, not women. Health-related factors partially accounted for the association between age at divorce and cognitive function among men. DISCUSSION Findings highlight the importance of considering the role of timing of marital loss in cognitive health among older adults.

Abstract
This is a cross-sectional study evaluating the association between zinc deficiency and cognitive decline in 591 community-dwelling older adults living in the cities of Campinas, Limeira, and Piracicaba-SP. Cognitive status was evaluated using the Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument-CASI-S, considering a decline for scores <23 for those aged 60-69 and <20 for those aged ≥70 years. Among the evaluated cognitive domains, older adults with zinc deficiency had significantly lower mean scores on the memory test (p=0.018). For zinc deficiency, values below 70 µg/dL were considered for women and 74 µg/dL for men. The prevalence of zinc deficiency was 3.9%, and cognitive deficit was 9.4%, being significantly higher in those with zinc deficiency compared with those with normal serum zinc concentrations. In adjusted multiple logistic regression analysis, the factors that remained associated with cognitive decline were zinc deficiency (OR=3.80; 95%CI=1.30-11.12), low schooling level (OR=3.12; 95%CI=1.49-6.50), lack of a partner (OR=1.88; 95%CI=1.04-3.42), risk of malnutrition (OR=3.98; 95%CI=2.36-6.71), and a history of encephalic vascular accident (OR=2.70; 95%CI=1.04-6.98). Zinc deficiency was associated with the presence of cognitive decline in older adults. Actions in primary health care are necessary to prevent the deficiency of this nutrient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to clarify the association between marital status and dementia in Japan, adjusting for socioeconomic, lifestyle, and lifestyle-related disease factors. METHODS Data from the Japanese Toyama Dementia Survey were used. Individuals aged ≥65 years living in Toyama Prefecture were randomly selected, and 1171 participants were analysed, with a sampling rate of 0.5%. The participants' marital status, socioeconomic status, lifestyle factors, and lifestyle-related diseases were assessed. The odds ratio (OR) of marital status for each lifestyle factor and medical histories were calculated by logistic regression analysis. The OR of marital status for dementia was also calculated by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of dementia was 7.4% for married, and 20.6% for non-married participants. Non-married participants showed a higher prevalence of a history of stroke than married participants. The age- and sex-adjusted OR of marital status for dementia was 1.99 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.24-3.18) for non-married compared with married participants. Following variable adjustments, the OR for dementia was higher for non-married participants (adjusted OR 1.71; 95% CI 1.03-2.85). CONCLUSIONS Non-marital status was an independent risk factor for dementia in Japan even after adjusting for socioeconomic, lifestyle, and lifestyle-related disease factors. Non-married people were more likely to have dementia because of their history of stroke.

Abstract
Late-life marital status is associated with cognitive aging; however, the influence of life course marital biography (i.e., changes in marital status) on late-life cognitive trajectories, as well as gender differences in the effects of marital biography, remain to be explored. Associations between (a) marital status at study baseline (currently married, previously married, never married) and (b) retrospectively reported life course marital biography (i.e., age at first marriage, time spent unmarried following initial marriage, history of divorce, history of widowhood) and up to 20 years of subsequent episodic memory trajectories were examined using latent growth curve models in 3,061 participants aged 51 + in the Health and Retirement Study 2017 Life History Mail Survey. Gender differences were examined with multiplicative interaction terms and stratified models. Participants who were married at study baseline demonstrated higher initial memory than previously and never married individuals. Older age at first marriage and shorter duration spent unmarried were each associated with better initial episodic memory among previously married individuals only; longer duration spent unmarried was associated with slower memory decline. Stratified models suggested that these associations may be driven by women. These results highlight the importance of considering multiple aspects of marital biography, not just current marital status, in cognitive aging research. Marital biography may have an enduring influence on cognitive aging, particularly among previously married older women. Future work is needed to identify mechanisms (e.g., socioeconomic resources, cognitive stimulation, self and spousal health, emotional support) through which marital histories influence cognitive aging.
