Non-occupational Lead and Cadmium Exposure and Blood Pressure in Thai Men

In this study, the effects of low level exposure to lead and cadmium on blood pressure among 212 men have been examined. The mean age was 41 years (range 34-53). The means of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 126 (range 94-159) and 78 (range 58-117) mmHg, respectively. Blood lead concentration ranged from 144.31 to 779.34 ηmol/L with a geometric mean (GM) of 363.11 ηmol/L. Blood cadmium levels ranged from 1.33-37.81ηmol/L with GM of 8.09 ηmol/L. For stepwise regression analysis, an increase in systolic blood pressure was significantly predictive by an increasing blood lead ( p<0.001) whereas blood cadmium showed no significant correlation with blood pressure. Body mass index and alcohol consumption also contributed to both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. These findings also supported our proposal concerning the association between blood lead and blood pressure. Asia Pac J Public Health 2004; 16(2): 133-137.

Heavy metal concentrations in the general population of Andalusia, South of Spain: a comparison with the population within the area of influence of Aznalcóllar mine spill (SW Spain)

Levels of metalloids (As - urine) and heavy metals (Hg - urine, Cd - whole blood and Zn - serum) were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry in 601 subjects living in the area affected by the Aznalcóllar mine spill (SW, Spain) and compared with those of a representative sample (960 subjects) selected from the Andalusian community (non-affected area), southern Spain. The characteristic parameters of the analytical method including uncertainty were determined for each metal. Potential associations of metal concentration with age, sex and body mass index as well as life-style habits (smoking, alcohol consumption and food habits) were explored. Concentrations of all the metals studied were statistically higher in the population of the affected area with respect to that of the non-affected area in Andalusia, although levels were always lower or similar to the values reported for the general population and below occupational reference limits. In conclusion, there is a lack of evidence that the spill had any incidence on human health in the population living in the affected area. There are few references in scientific literature reporting values from large series of samples, and hence our data could be useful for further studies.

Exposure assessment of male recruits in Slovenia to cadmium and lead due to biological monitoring

AIMS

In Slovenia, there were no data available for an assessment of cadmium and lead levels in the population till 2001. The present study was conducted to evaluate the cadmium and lead burden from all sources (air, food, water) with the aim of obtaining initial information on cadmium and lead levels in blood of healthy and occupationally unexposed young males.

METHODS

There were 464 participants included in the analysis of blood cadmium and lead levels, aged between 18 and 27 years, the median age being 20 years. Blood samples of maximum 2 ml were taken from the cubital vein for analysis of cadmium and lead levels.

RESULTS

There were 463 blood samples analyzed for cadmium and 464 for lead. Of all tested persons, 38.2% had less than 0.5 microg/l of cadmium in their blood and 28.2% up to 1 microg/l. The median level of blood cadmium was 0.5 microg/l. The percentage of recruits with blood lead level over 100 microg was 3.1%. The median level of blood lead was 35 microg/l. The differences in blood levels of both pollutants were statistically significant with regard to the region of permanent residence (P<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The results of the study give a good assessment of cadmium and lead burdening of young Slovene male population. The information obtained provides a foundation for further comparative research at the international level as well as for further study and risk assessment of individual population groups exposed to greater risk due to their lifestyle and eating habits.

The German Environmental Survey 1990/92 (GerES II): primary predictors of blood cadmium levels in adults

As part of the representative Environmental Survey in Germany in 1990-1992, investigators determined cadmium levels in blood provided by 3,965 subjects aged 25-69 yr. The investigators considered approximately 150 variables (i.e., demographics, household and occupational characteristics, environmental exposures, smoking habits, frequency of food consumption, and additional life-style features) as potential predictors in multivariate regression analysis. On the basis of the results of multivariate regression analysis, the authors derived 2 slightly different models for the prediction of blood cadmium levels in populations from West and East Germany. Both models included 3 primary predictors of blood cadmium levels. The 2 models explained 51.3% and 61.2% of the observed variance in blood cadmium levels in West and East Germany, respectively. The most important predictor was a specific indicator for smoking habits, which was determined from a separate mathematical model. In this model, the effect of smoking was considered, and the model accounted for the biological half-life of cadmium in blood.

Blood cadmium concentrations in the general population of Umbria, central Italy

The aims of this study were (a) to assess blood cadmium (B-Cd) concentrations and to establish a tentative reference interval; (b) to identify significant determinants of B-Cd, in a population from Umbria, Central Italy, which was not occupationally exposed to cadmium (Cd). Four hundred and thirty-four healthy blood-donors volunteered to answer a questionnaire and provide a blood sample for B-Cd analysis, which was performed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Blood Cd concentrations ranged from non-detectable values, i.e. below 0.1 microgram/l up to 3.4 micrograms/l and were not normally distributed. The median values and the 95th percentiles were 0.7 and 2.0 micrograms/l, respectively. Concentrations of B-Cd were more than double in smokers than in non-smokers, median values being 1.1 micrograms/l and 0.5 microgram/l, respectively. In current smokers, B-Cd values correlated with the number of cigarettes smoked daily (rs = 0.40, P = 0.0001) and with the cumulative exposure to cigarette smoke (rs = 0.35, P = 0.0001). Concentrations of B-Cd correlated with age in the non-smokers, but not in the smokers and were significantly higher in women than in men only in the non-smokers. Both in smokers and non-smokers, B-Cd concentrations were similar in subjects living in urban or in rural areas. In the whole study population the lower and the upper tentative reference limit were < 0.1 and 2.2 micrograms/l, respectively, as computed by a non-parametric rank-based method. The upper limit was approximately double in smokers than in non-smokers (3.1 micrograms/l and 1.6 micrograms/l, respectively). Our results show that B-Cd concentrations in a general population from Umbria are in the range reported for general populations in Northern Italy and other European Countries. Smoking was the strongest determinant of B-Cd concentrations and age had a lesser effect.

Age differences in biochemical and hematological measures during middle age

Biochemical and hematological measures possibly associated with ageing were measured on a single occasion in 3402 male and 2152 female London Civil Servants aged from 35 to 59 years of age. These included erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), blood hemoglobin and serum albumin, calcium, bilirubin, creatinine, urea, urate, high density lipoprotein (HDL), and total cholesterol. Independently and positively related to age were ESR with an estimated 47% 'increase' in men over the 15 years between ages 40 to 55 and a 40% increase in women; serum urea had a 6%/15-year increase in men and 20% in women; total cholesterol had a 6%/15-year increase in men and 18% in women; serum creatinine 'increased' by 2%/15-years in men and 5% in women. In women, urate, HDL cholesterol and hemoglobin increased with age group. Negatively related to age was serum bilirubin in both sexes (8% and 6% 'fall'/15-years in men and women respectively). Serum albumin and calcium fell with age group in men. The sexes differed in their relationship to aging for total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol (greater increase in women), serum calcium (small decrease in men and small increase in women), urate and hemoglobin (increases in women but not men). Urea increased more in women than men, and albumin decreased more in men than women (p < 0.001 for all comparisons with the exception of HDL cholesterol, p < 0.01). Changes during the menopause were thought to explain some of these findings.

Seminal plasma lead, cadmium and zinc in relation to tobacco consumption

The total quantity of zinc in the ejaculates of smokers was significantly lower than in non-smokers. This was not related to a significant increase in the quantities of seminal cadmium or lead, or to a decrease in sperm quality in the smoking group. It appears that tobacco consumption may have to exceed 20 cigarettes/day before a noticeable increase in seminal cadmium can be recorded. It is suggested that this reduction in zinc secretion may jeopardize the content of chromatin zinc, and thereby the stability of the sperm chromatin. This may then contribute to reproductive failure or have consequences for fetal development.

Effect of cadmium on some enzyme activities in first-trimester human placentae

Explants from first-trimester placentae obtained from non-smoking women were incubated with doses of 0, 0.75, 1.5, 3, 6 and 12 micrograms of cadmium (Cd) as CdCl2 for 6 or 24 h. At the end of the incubation period, the activities of placental aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) (a phase I enzyme), quinone reductase (QR) and catecholamine-O-methyltransferase (COMT) (both phase II enzymes) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) were determined. Cd at low dose levels increased significantly the activities of placental phases I and II enzymes in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Of the first 3 enzymes, only AHH showed a biphasic response for the two time periods, with the activities of QR and COMT continually increasing at all the dose levels tested for the two incubation periods. However, the G-6-PD activity was inhibited at all the dose levels of Cd, the effect being very drastic after exposure to 0.75 ppm Cd for both incubation periods.
