Self-Reported Physical Activity, Injury, and Illness in Canadian Adolescent Ski Racers

Youth ski racers spend a considerable amount of time on snow and this may detract from other activities known to influence fundamental movement skills and overall health related outcomes. Parents of racers (n = 52 F; n = 44 M; age range 9–14 years) registered in the Canadian club system completed a baseline medical questionnaire during preseason testing in 2017. We describe physical activity volume and sport participation outside of physical education classes over the previous 12 months and report on injuries, medication use and health care utilization. The mean number of activities participated was five (range 1–14) with cycling, hiking, and swimming as the preferred choice and a cumulative mean of just under 400 h of activity was reported (range F 27–1,015; M 62–869 h/year) in the past year. During the past 12 months 16% of the athletes reported being injured and injury severity impacted return to sport with range of reported days missed from 1 to 365 days. Thirteen non-concussive injuries were reported in alpine skiing and females (12%, 6/52) reported more lower limb injuries than males (7%, 3/44). More males were concussed over their lifetime, with alpine skiing accounting for 46% and mountain biking 15%. Most athletes (85%) did not take medication on a regular basis and those that did had a medical diagnosis. The frequency of respiratory conditions was 13% (12/96) with males reporting slightly more cases than females. No difference in emergency visits occurred (25%) between males and females in the past 12 months, however females reported more (n = 102) allied health care, sport medicine and x-rays appointments when compared to males (n = 65). In summary, a high volume of physical activity (an hour plus per day) over the previous 12 months was reported with racers participating in several activities outside of skiing, likely honing their fundamental movement skills. Close proximity to the mountains may have influenced their choices of activity outside of ski racing, and their injuries and a variety of health conditions were typical of their age group. Future research employing wearable technology to objectively quantify the volume and intensity of physical activity participation is recommended.

The Influence of Ski Waist-Width and Fatigue on Knee-Joint Stability and Skier’s Balance

Alpine skiing is a complex sport that demands a high level of motor control and balance. In general, skiers are prone to deterioration in the state of fatigue due to using inappropriate equipment. As a consequence, the risk of injury might increase. This study aimed to examine the influence of fatigue and ski waist-width on knee-joint stability and skier’s balance. A laboratory skiing simulation in a quasistatic ski-turning position was conducted where the lower-limb kinematics was recorded using an optical system, and the balance-determining parameters were captured using a force plate. It was demonstrated that the knee-joint kinematics and skier’s balance were hampered in the state of fatigue, as well as when using skis with a large waist-width. The results of the study suggest avoiding the fatigue state and the use of skis having a large waist-width while skiing on hard surfaces to decrease the risk of injury.

Sustained Reductions in Children's Risk Taking from Peer-Communicated Behavioral Safety Norms

OBJECTIVE

This research examined whether the positive effects of a peer-communicated social norm that reduces risk-taking behaviors persist over time and if a reminder of this peer-communicated safety message has any impact on this outcome.

METHODS

Positive mood in 7- to 9-year olds was induced experimentally and risk taking intentions and behaviors were measured when the child was in a positive and neutral mood state and after they had been exposed to either a safety or neutral peer-communicated social norm message. A few weeks later, half of the participants who experienced the safety social norm message were exposed to a reminder of this message via a slogan and risk-taking measures were taken again when in a heightened positive mood state.

RESULTS

Exposure to a safety norm successfully counteracted the increase in risk taking associated with a positive mood state. These effects persisted for several weeks regardless of whether the children were exposed to a reminder.

CONCLUSION

Manipulating peer social norms holds promise as an approach to produce reductions in children's risk taking and these effects persist at least over several weeks.

Snowboarders' Knowledge of the FIS Rules for Conduct on Ski Slopes

The objective of the present study is to assess snowboarders’ general perceptions of safety and knowledge of existing rules and both active and passive knowledge of the International Ski Federation (FIS) regulations in order to contribute to defining target groups for specific educational interventions in the field of injury prevention. Data were drawn from random interviews conducted with 918 snowboarders during the 2017–2018 winter season at five ski resorts located in the Spanish Pyrenees. To collect the data, a questionnaire assessing personal characteristics (gender, age, origin, and self-reported skill), general perception of safety, general request for rules, and knowledge of existing rules was used. Pearson’s Chi-squared tests were performed to compare characteristics between groups. The study revealed, for accident prevention purposes, a concerning lack of general knowledge of existing rules. Risk-inducing situations that could result in severe injuries were largely assessed incorrectly. The appropriate intuitive behavior increases with age and experience: youths and beginners are less able to implement the FIS rules than older and more experienced snowboarders. Stakeholders, such as parents, ski resorts, clubs or schools, should direct educational efforts at high-risk groups. Further research is needed to determine the causal relation between snowboard-related injuries and disregard of FIS rules.

Injury Prevention: Freestylers' Awareness of FIS Code of Conduct for Snow Parks

The objectives of the present study were to assess general perceptions of safety in snow parks (SPs), general knowledge of rules existence, and both active and passive awareness of the International Ski Federation (FIS) rules contained in its Code of Conduct for SPs in order to define target groups for injury prevention-specific education interventions. Data were drawn from 436 freestylers randomly interviewed. The study was conducted during the 2018-2019 winter season in the SP of a major winter resort located in the Spanish Pyrenees. A questionnaire assessing personal data (gender, age, gear used, self-reported skill, and frequency of use), general perceptions on safety, general request for rules, and awareness of existing rules in SPs was developed. Chi-square goodness-of-fit tests were used to compare characteristics between groups. It was revealed, for accident prevention purposes, a concerning general lack of knowledge of existing rules in SPs (63% of participants ignored them). Risk-inducing situations that could result in severe injuries, such as familiarity with the right progression in choosing features and/or stunts or with safety equipment, were largely assessed incorrectly (94% and 70% of participants, respectively). Appropriate intuitive behavior increases with experience: youths and beginners are less able to implement FIS rules than more experienced freestylers.

Pediatric and adolescent injury in snowboarding

To systematically review published literature on pediatric snowboard injuries, a literature search was performed in PubMed for "snowboard*". Studies must 1) have been primary research; 2) included at least 10 snowboarders; 3) included children and/or adolescents 4) reported specific injury outcomes, risk factors, or injury prevention program effectiveness. The overall injury rates ranged from 0.5 per 1,000 runs to 420 per 1,000 snowboarders. The most common injuries types were fractures, sprains and strains. Most injuries occurred to an upper extremity or the head. Falls and collisions were the most common mechanisms. Snowboarders who were younger, female, had less snowboard experience, or had a previous injury were at greater risk for injury. Wearing wrist guards had a protective effect. Injury rates varied by injury denominator and source of data. Injury prevention efforts should evaluate modifiable extrinsic risk factors, such as strategies to increase use of protective equipment.

A human factors approach to snowsport safety: Novel research on pediatric participants' behaviors and head injury risk

OBJECTIVE

This study applied a human factors approach to snowsport resort systems to contribute to the understanding of the incidence and severity of pediatric snowsport head accelerations.

BACKGROUND

Previous research indicates low magnitude head accelerations are common among snowsport participants. This study adds to the knowledge of snowsport safety by measuring aspects of participants' snowsport behavior and linking this with head acceleration data.

METHOD

School-aged students (n = 107) wore telemetry-fitted helmets and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices during snowsport activity. Data was collected over 159 sessions (total hours 701). Head accelerations recorded by the telemetry units were compared with GPS-generated data.

RESULTS

This study found speeds attained normally exceed the testing rating for which helmets are designed; lower rates of head accelerations compared to earlier studies and that when head accelerations did occur they were generally below the threshold for concussions.

CONCLUSION

Pediatric snowsport head accelerations are rare and are generally of low magnitude. Those most at risk of a head acceleration >40 g were male snowboarders. Given the recorded speeds in first time participants, increased targeting of novice snowsport participants to encourage education about the use of protective equipment, including helmets, is warranted. Post event recall was not a good indicator of having experienced a head impact. Consideration should be given to raising the standard design speed testing for snowsport helmet protective devices to reflect actual snowsport behaviors.

Effects of helmet laws and education campaigns on helmet use in young skiers

OBJECTIVE

Helmet-compulsory laws for young skiers, accompanied by educational campaigns, have recently been implemented in several countries. However, data regarding compliance to these interventions during adolescence are scarce.

METHODS

In 2011, a questionnaire survey was performed among 10- to 16-year-old students in 62 Austrian secondary schools.

RESULTS

A total of 2655 questionnaires were completed by 1376 males and 1279 females. Helmet use was reported in 99% of 10- to 15-year-old skiers (for whom helmets are mandatory) and in 91% of 16-year-old skiers (for whom helmets are not mandatory).

CONCLUSION

Compliance with helmet laws, which were accompanied by educational campaigns, was very high among adolescent skiers. Nevertheless, helmet use decreased slightly during adolescence, and this decrease was particularly pronounced when helmet use was no longer mandatory. Sophisticated multifaceted interventions may have the potential to increase the use of ski helmets among individuals who refuse to wear helmets.
