Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the effect of necrotic enteritis (NE), phytase level and meat and bone meal (MBM) processing on bone mineralization of broilers and litter quality. Ross 308 male broiler chicks (n = 768) were allotted to 48 pens with 16 birds each. There were 8 dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Factors were NE challenge (no or yes), phytase level (500 or 5,000 FTU/kg), and MBM (as-received or over-processed). Half of the birds were challenged with field strains of Eimeria spp. at d 9 and 108 CFU per mL of Clostridium perfringens strain EHE-NE18 on d 14 and 15. The middle toe, tibia and femur of 2 birds per pen were excised at d 16 and 29 for determination of ash, breaking strength (BS) and bone mineralization. At d 42, all were assessed for hock burns and litter was scored and assessed for dry matter (DM). At d 16, challenged birds had lower toe ash (P < 0.01), femur ash (P < 0.001), tibia ash (P < 0.001) and tibial BS (P < 0.001) than unchallenged birds. At d 16, challenged birds fed high phytase and over-processed MBM had higher toe Mn than those fed low phytase and as-received MBM. At d 29 unchallenged birds fed high phytase and as-received MBM had a higher toe Mn than those fed over-processed MBM. At d 16, a phytase × MBM interaction was detected for femur Zn concentration (P < 0.05), where a higher level of Zn was observed in the high phytase group fed over-processed MBM. At d 16, tibial Ca (P < 0.05) and P (P < 0.05) were lower in the challenged whereas the femur K (P < 0.001), Mn (P < 0.01) and Na (P < 0.001) were higher in the challenged at d 16. At d 42, challenged birds had higher litter DM (P = 0.058) and fewer hock burns than those unchallenged (P < 0.05). In conclusion, NE impaired bone traits but high phytase and over-processed MBM increased bone mineral contents. Cases of hock burns may be lower under NE incidences due to lower livability of birds reducing litter wetness.

Abstract
A practice that is used to extend the period of lay of hens is induced moulting. It involves restriction of nutrients, and sometimes manipulation of lighting, with the consequent loss of bodyweight and feathers, regression of the reproductive tract and cessation of egg lay. When the period of moulting is completed, the reproductive tract will regenerate and egg production will resume, thereby extending the overall period of lay. Towards the end of the laying cycle of hens, the production and quality of eggs decline. At this point, some egg farmers will induce a moult in the flocks to reduce bird-replacement costs and improve profitability. In the Australian egg industry, less than 10% of layers are moulted. There are implications for the welfare of hens that are induced to moult, particularly due to loss of bodyweight and feathers. Histopathological studies have shown the extent to which loss of feathers may affect welfare from a physical perspective, and it terms of pain. It is apparent that induced moulting can lead to an increase in aggression and injurious pecking, and birds with poor feather cover are vulnerable to damage from this pecking. Induced moulting can increase stress, although the implications of this for the welfare of hens is not well understood. The endocrine events associated with induced moulting are reasonably well known and it is possible to manipulate the endocrine system to extend the lay of hens without the need to moult. Nevertheless, these approaches are unlikely to be adopted into practice. More importantly, hens should always have feed and water available and are in good condition before undergoing a moult. This is essential from the perspective of ensuring adequate standards of welfare of birds.

Abstract
Physiological changes during molt and postmolt egg production variables were compared among hens induced to molt by using cassava meal varying the length of the feeding period. Hens were randomly assigned to 3 treatments of 72 birds each: 1) molted by full feeding with cassava meal for 4 wk (CAS4); 2) molted by full feeding with cassava meal for 5 wk (CAS5); and 3) molted by full feeding with cassava meal for 6 wk (CAS6). All groups were fed a pullet developer diet for 2 wk following treatment. During the molt period, the birds were exposed to an 8L:16D photoperiod and had access to drinking water at all times. Thereafter, all hens were fed a layer diet (17.71% CP), and exposed to a 16L:8D photoperiod, and production performance was measured for 16 wk. The molt treatments resulted in total cessation of egg production in all treatments within 2 wk following feeding of the molt diet. BW loss of birds in the CAS6 treatment was approximately 41.81%, which was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those in the CAS5 (37.63%) and CAS4 (31.89%) treatments. The CAS5 and CAS6 hens had significantly lower (P < 0.05) ovarian and oviducal weights than the CAS4 hens. No consistent differences were observed for concentrations of plasma estradiol and progesterone, bone quality, or mortality among the treatments. Postmolt feed consumption, egg weight, and mortality were not different (P > 0.05) as a result of molt induction method. However, the CAS4 hens had significantly higher (P < 0.05) cumulative egg production and lower feed conversion ratio than hens in the CAS6 treatment. Significant differences were found among treatments for Haugh units and shell thickness in some periods of the postmolt. It was concluded that cassava meal could be used to induce molt in laying hens effectively, feeding the molt diet for 4 wk produced optimum body weight loss and postmolt performance.

Abstract
This study examined the effect of water-chilled perches on hen production and physiological responses to induced molt during elevated temperatures. A total of 288White Leghorns at 82 wk of age were housed in 36 cages of 6 banks. Each bank was assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: cooled perches, air perches, and no perches. The hens were subjected to 2 heat episodes during their first laying cycle at week 21 to 35 and week 73 to 80, respectively. The hens were subjected to a 28 D nonfasted molting regimen starting at 85 wk of age. Cyclic heat of 32°C (6:00 am to 6:00 pm) was applied daily during the molting period. After molt, hens were returned to a layer diet and housed under thermoneutral condition. Two birds per cage were monitored for BW change during molt. Egg production was recorded daily. Feed utilization was measured during molt at 86 and 88 wk of age. Egg weight and eggshell traits were examined at 84 wk (pre-molt) and post-molt at 92, 96, and 104 wk of age. Rectal temperature and blood samples were collected from 2 birds per cage at the end of molt. Blood samples were used for determining heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, corticosterone, and thyroid hormones. Plumage condition was examined at 22 wk post-molt. Compared to control and air perch hens, cooled perch hens had higher feed usage and greater BW loss, lower heterophil/lymphocyte ratios (P < 0.05) with no difference in thyroid hormones and corticosterone at the end of molt. Cooled perch hens also had higher egg production beginning at 98 wk of age (Ptreatment*age < 0.0001) than control hens and sometimes the air-perch hens. Cooled perch hens had higher rectal temperature than control but not air perch hens at end of molt. Moreover, cooled perch hens had better breast feather scores than air perch hens but worse vent plumage (P ≤ 0.05) than both control and air perch hens. These results indicate that the provision of cooled perches assists hens with better adaptation to stressors, such as induced molt plus heat exposure, resulting in improved post-molt egg production.

Abstract
Laying hens develop a type of osteoporosis that arises from a loss of structural bone, resulting in high incidence of fractures. In this study, a comparison of bone material properties was made for lines of hens created by divergent selection to have high and low bone strength and housed in either individual cages, with restricted mobility, or in an aviary system, with opportunity for increased mobility. Improvement of bone biomechanics in the high line hens and in aviary housing was mainly due to increased bone mass, thicker cortical bone and more medullary bone. However, bone material properties such as cortical and medullary bone mineral composition and crystallinity as well as collagen maturity did not differ between lines. However, bone material properties of birds from the different type of housing were markedly different. The cortical bone in aviary birds had a lower degree of mineralization and bone mineral was less mature and less organized than in caged birds. These differences can be explained by increased bone turnover rates due to the higher physical activity of aviary birds that stimulates bone formation and bone remodeling. Multivariate statistical analyses shows that both cortical and medullary bone contribute to breaking strengthThe cortical thickness was the single most important contributor while its degree of mineralization and porosity had a smaller contribution. Bone properties had poorer correlations with mechanical properties in cage birds than in aviary birds presumably due to the greater number of structural defects of cortical bone in cage birds.

Abstract
Osteoporosis, a progressive decrease in mineralized structural bone, causes 20 to 35% of all mortalities in caged White Leghorn hens. Previous research has focused on manipulating the egg laying environment to improve skeletal health, with little research on the pullet. The objective of the current study was to determine the effect of perch access on pullet health, bone mineralization, muscle deposition, and stress in caged White Leghorns. From 0 to 17 wk of age, half of the birds were placed in cages with 2 round metal perches, while the other half did not have perches (controls). Bone mineralization and bone size traits were determined in the tibia, femur, sternum, humerus, ulna, radius, and phalange (III carpometacarpal) using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Muscle weights were obtained for the breast and left leg (drum and thigh). A sample of pullets from each cage was evaluated for foot health, BW, right adrenal weight, and packed cell volume. Most measurements were taken at 3, 6, and 12 wk of age. Access to perches did not affect breast muscle weight, percentage breast muscle, percentage leg muscle, bone mineral density, bone length, bone width, adrenal weight, packed cell volume, and hyperkeratosis of the foot-pad and toes. There were no differences in BW, bone mineral content, and leg muscle weight at 3 and 6 wk of age. However, at 12 wk of age, BW (P = 0.025), bone mineral content of the tibia, sternum, and humerus (P = 0.015), and the left leg muscle weight (P = 0.006) increased in pullets with access to perches as compared with controls. These results suggest that perch access has beneficial effects on pullet health by stimulating leg muscle deposition and increasing the mineral content of certain bones without causing a concomitant decrease in bone mineral density.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate alternative molting protocols assessing hen welfare and performance during and after molt. Hyline W-36 pullets were housed at 15 wk of age, and their egg production was obtained during this first cycle. When birds were 80 wk, the following molting treatments were applied: a conventional molt consisting of 10 d of fasting followed by cracked corn for 8 d and a pullet developer diet for 10 d; and 4 alternative molting programs: a soy hulls-based diet (12% CP, 1,455 kcal/kg of ME, and 1.38% Ca) offered for 14 d followed by cracked corn for 4 d and a pullet developer diet for 10 d; and the other 3 molt regimens consisted of feeding soy hulls for 4, 8, or 12 d followed by 10, 6, or 2 d, respectively, of a soy hulls-based diet and 4 d of cracked corn plus 10 d of a pullet developer diet. A nonmolted group of birds was fed a laying hen diet during the experimental period. Hen-day egg number was recorded daily for 56 wk (through 80-136 wk of age). The nonmolted hens showed lower hen-day production and fewer intact eggs and a higher number of cracked and shell-less eggs compared with those of the molted hens (P < 0.0001). A significant treatment by age effect (P < 0.0001) was observed for the variables of high-density lipoproteins and triglycerides. Control hens showed the lowest high-density lipoprotein concentration and the highest triglyceride levels at 84 wk of age when compared with all treatments. The lack of difference in heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio during molt suggests little influence of molting protocols on this variable. Regardless of the treatments, molting was deleterious to bone quality. A high mobilization of Ca through bone resorption for eggshell formation could explain the results obtained. Behavioral patterns coincided with a decline in frustration activities and an increase in alertness as molt proceeded until 83 wk of age. Alternative molting diets consisting of soybean hulls were successful in providing acceptable postmolt egg production performance.

Abstract
Sixty White Leghorn hens were assigned to 1 of 6 treatments: pretrial control (PC), full fed (FF), 9-d feed withdrawal (FW), 90% alfalfa-10% layer ration (A90), 80% alfalfa-20% layer ration (A80), and 70% alfalfa/30% layer ration (A70). For the PC, hens were killed and bones collected immediately before light restriction. The FF hens were also subjected to light restriction. After hens were fasted or fed different molting treatment diets for 9 d, they were fed a maintenance diet for 14 d. At 23 d postmolt, hens were killed and bones collected. Feed intakes per hen of the FF, A90, A80, and A70 treatments during a 9-d molting period were 97, 17, 44, and 46 g, respectively. Tibia dry weight of the PC was greater than the FF group. The PC group had significantly greater tibia ash weight than the FF, FW, A90, and A80 groups. Tibia ash concentration of the PC group was significantly greater than the FF, A90, and A80 groups. Humerus dry weights of the PC group were greater than the other groups except for hens on FW. Humerus ash weight was lower for FF hens as compared with PC hens, but other molting treatments had humerus ash weights similar to PC hens. Tibia mineral content and density of the PC were significantly greater than the other treatments. The FF group exhibited significantly lower humerus mineral content and density compared with those of the PC group. The PC and A70 hens exhibited significantly greater ultimate bending moment and ultimate stress compared with the FF and A90 hens. The modulus of elasticity of the PC hens was greater than that of the FF and A90. There were no significant differences in modulus of elasticity among the PC, FW, A80, and A70 hens. In conclusion, hens at 23 d postmolt experienced deterioration in skeletal integrity. This decrease in bone quality occurred in all molted hens. However, A70 and A80 alfalfa-fed hens retained mechanical properties of bones compared with the pretrial control.

Abstract
Traditionally, molting was initiated by withdrawing feed. However, public criticism of feed deprivation, based on the perception that it inhumanely increases hunger, has led the poultry industry to ban the practice. Thus far, alternatives have not been demonstrated to ameliorate the increase in hunger that led to the ban on inducing molting by feed deprivation. Incorporating melengestrol acetate (MGA), an orally active progestin, into a balanced layer diet induces molting and increases postmolt egg quality. Hy-Line W-98 hens (n = 60) were randomly assigned to a balanced layer ration (control), a balanced layer ration containing MGA, or a 94% wheat middlings diet (wheat) for 20 d, or were feed deprived for 8 d. Hens were trained to peck a switch to receive a feed reward based on a progressive ratio reinforcement schedule. Motivation of hens to acquire feed was measured as the total number of pecks recorded in 15 min on d 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20. On d 20, abdominal fat pad and digesta-free gizzards were weighed. The number of pecks in the feed-deprived group was greater than controls by d 4 and remained greater at d 8, when these hens were removed from the experiment. Hens in the wheat group that were rewarded with a layer diet pecked more than controls from d 8 to 20. Hens in the MGA group pecked for a reward at the same rate as control hens throughout the experiment. Hens fed the wheat diet had heavier gizzards compared with control and MGA-fed hens. Hens fed MGA had greater abdominal fat pad compared with wheat and control hens. Hens molted using a diet containing MGA have a similar motivation to obtain feed as control hens; therefore, this alternative does not appear to increase hunger. However, hens molted with a wheat middling diet appear to be as motivated to obtain feed as did the feed-deprived hens.

Abstract
Thyroxine increases during a molt in wild and captive birds, and thyroidectomy prevents induction of molt. This trial examined the effect of dietary thyroxine on molt induction molt in chickens (laying hens, 59 weeks of age). In a completely randomized design (n=15 hens/replication; 6 replications/treatment), hens were randomly assigned to either a traditional molting program consisting of feed withdrawal (FWD), or to diets containing 40 mg thyroxine/kg diet (HT), 20 mg thyroxine/kg diet (LT), or 40 mg thyroxine from thyroactive iodinated casein/kg diet (TIC). The molting treatment lasted 7-13 d, until egg production reached 0%. After molt induction, birds had ad libitum access to the same diet, until egg production was re-initiated and maximized ( approximately 56 d). All treatments induced molt, based upon cessation of egg laying and regression of ovary and oviduct. Birds on FWD treatment lost more body weight during the molting period, but gained more after molt compared to thyroxine treatments (P<0.01 for each), although all body weights were similar when egg production was maximized. Data demonstrate that oral thyroxine, in purified or non-purified form, induces a molt and may enhance animal well-being by reducing the need for FWD.

Abstract
This study investigated changes in bone integrity and circulating concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) of hens subjected to 2 distinct molting regimens and fed pre- and postmolt diets high in n-3 or n-6 fatty acids. A dual-energy x-ray absorptiometer determined bone mineral density (BMD) of the tibia and humerus of 45 live hens from 62 to 76 wk of age. Densitometric scans were also conducted in excised tibia and humerus at 66, 71, and 76 wk of age. Concentrations of IGF-I were monitored using an homologous RIA at the same ages. The molting treatments consisted of 10 d of fasting + cracked corn for 7 d + pullet developer diet for 10 d or a nonfasting molt (wheat-middlings-based diet for 27 d). Five weeks prior to and after either molt treatment, birds were fed 1 of 2 diets containing dietary n-6/ n-3 fatty acids ratios of 0.6 or 8.0. At the end of the molt (71 wk of age), tibial BMD decreased 30% in fasted and 11% in nonfasted molt regimens, and the fatty acid content of the premolt diet had no effect on the decline in BMD. The BMD of the humerus also decreased during molt with the exception of hens subjected to a nonfasted molt and fed n-3 fatty acid diets in which their BMD values were similar to or greater (at 73 wk of age) than those of controls during the entire experimental period (treatment by bone by age, P < or = 0.0001). Induced molt affected circulating IGF-I concentrations (treatment by age interaction, P < or = 0.0001), and the response was the same regardless of molt regimen (fasting vs. nonfasting) or diet (n-3 vs. n-6 fatty acids). A decrease in IGF-I 54 h postmolt was noted; however, from 13 to 43 d postmolt, all molted birds had elevated IGF-I as compared with controls. In conclusion, a nonfasted molt as compared with fasted molt was less detrimental to bone mineralization; dietary n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratios in the pre- and postmolt diets had little effect on the decline of skeletal integrity during molt, and circulating IGF-I concentrations were affected by molt.
