Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with complex clinical manifestations and no current cure. Alternative splicing (AS) plays a key role in SLE by regulating immune-related genes, but its genome-wide regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate the involvement of abnormal splicing regulators and AS events in the immune regulation of SLE. Transcriptome data from the SLE dataset GSE162828 were analyzed for differential gene expression and AS events using bioinformatics tools. Immune infiltration analysis was conducted with CIBERSORT, and co-expression of key splicing factors (SFs) and AS events was assessed using SUVA software. A total of 5144 differentially expressed genes and 73 SFs were identified. Significant immune cell differences were observed between SLE and controls, highlighting SFs such as HNRNPDL, RBM47, TIA1, SSB, and DHX15. Eighty-three AS events were identified, with IRF9 and PTPRC emerging as key regulatory events linked to SLE. Dysregulated SFs influence AS in immune-related genes, affecting immune cell composition and SLE progression. These findings offer potential new therapeutic targets for modulating the immune microenvironment in SLE.

Abstract
BackgroundAlthough there is an increase in prevalence and incidence of lupus worldwide, the journey to diagnosis is unduly delayed. This delay is associated with worse outcomes. Sub-Saharan Africa has witnessed an increase in lupus diagnosis in recent decades with no specific data on the time to diagnosis of lupus.ObjectivesWe measured and documented lupus diagnostic delays, patients' experiences, and factors associated with delayed diagnosis and provided recommendations for early diagnosis.MethodsThis is a three-month cross-sectional study of 245 patients diagnosed with lupus who are members of a Nigerian lupus support group. Included participants fill out patients' administered questionnaire in a Google doc. The questionnaire captured all aspects of the study objectives. Four diagnostic journey intervals were defined. Delayed diagnosis was defined as a time interval from first symptoms to lupus diagnosis greater than or equal to 6 months.ResultsThe majority of participants were under 40 years of age (n-187, 76.3%) and predominantly female (n-226, 92.9%). About 53.9% of participants were diagnosed between 6 months and 2 years after their first symptoms, while 42% visited the first doctor within 6 months of symptom onset. Roughly half of the participants were referred to rheumatologists within 6 months of their visit to the last doctor, while 50.2% of the participants were diagnosed within 4 weeks of the rheumatologist's evaluation. Delayed diagnosis and delayed referral were documented in 80% and 66.9% of participants respectively. Low income (OR-7.4), internal organ manifestations (OR-4.5), and multiple doctors' visits (OR-11.6) were independently associated with delayed diagnosis.ConclusionsDiagnostic delay is observed in the majority of our patients. This delay is associated with multiple hospital visits, low income, and internal organ manifestations. There should be concerted efforts in SSA to improve the rheumatology workforce and incorporate non-specialists in clinical service delivery.

Abstract
We evaluated the clinical and laboratory features of decreased serum calcium (albumin corrected or uncorrected) compared to non-hypocalcemia in SLE patients. Exploring the value of serum calcium in assessing the activity and prognosis of SLE disease. Retrospective analysis and comparison of clinical and laboratory data obtained during the treatment period of SLE patients from 2018 to 2023. Both quantity and titer of serum anti-dsDNA antibodiesin SLE patients with hypocalcemia were significantly increased, and peripheral leucocytes, platelets, complement C3 or C4 reduced, while urinary cast and 24 h urine protein elevated. SLEDAI-2 K, BILAG and PGA have confirmed that SLE patients with decreased serum calcium had stronger disease activity, even without positive titers of anti-dsDNA antibodies. Multivariate analysis showed that the decreased serum calcium (OR, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.11, 0.89; P, 0.030) and positive anti-dsDNA antibodies (OR, 0.13; 95% CI, 0.04, 0.44; P, 0.001) are risk factors for increased disease activity in SLE. The Cox model showed that for newly diagnosed SLE and hypocalcemia patients, the stability time of GCs treatment may be prolonged. With the recovery of total calcium, disease activity and laboratory indicators could improve.SLE patients with decreased serum calcium have stronger disease activity and require longer treatment time for remission. Serum calcium levels may assist in assessing disease activity and predicting prognosis.

Abstract
Purpose Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by diverse clinical manifestations, including joint symptoms. Arthritis represents one of the earliest manifestations of SLE, profoundly affecting the quality of life for affected individuals, yet the underlying mechanisms of SLE-associated arthritis remain insufficiently investigated. The study aimed to investigate the impact of SLE exacerbation on arthritis using the MRL/lpr mouse model, which closely mimics human SLE manifestations. Methods In the present study, we evaluated the impact of SLE onset on knee joint degeneration by comparing arthritic phenotype and complex molecular alterations between 6 female 14-week-old MRL/lpr mice, which manifest SLE, and MRL/MpJ mice, which remain unaffected. Results Our results demonstrated that MRL/lpr mice exhibited a more severe arthritic phenotype compared to MRL/MpJ mice, characterized by elevated Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) scores (P < 0.01), disrupted extracellular matrix metabolism, impaired chondrocyte proliferation and increased apoptosis. Notably, inflammatory cytokines proteins such as IL-1β and TNF-α (both P < 0.01), IL-18 and IL-6 (both P < 0.05), were significantly increased in articular cartilage of MRL/lpr mice, accompanied by increased expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) (P < 0.05), NETRIN-1, and NESTIN (both P < 0.01), indicating that SLE promotes inflammation response and sensory nerve ingrowth in the knee joint, contributing to the progression of arthritis. Mechanistic analysis revealed that SLE exacerbation intensified chondrocyte pyroptosis by upregulating pyroptotic-related proteins, including NLRP3, CASPASE-1, and gasdermin D (all P < 0.01), through the regulation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (NRF-2)/KEAP-1 and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) pathway. Conclusion Collectively, our findings underscore the mechanistic connection between chondrocyte pyroptosis and arthritis exacerbation in SLE, suggesting potential therapeutic targets for mitigating arthritis progression in the context of SLE.

Abstract
Although the association between certain occupational exposures and the development of autoimmune rheumatic disease was first described over a century ago, this association has only become more widely recognized in the past 10 years because of the use of high-silica-content engineered stone in construction and home renovation. There is now a substantial and growing body of evidence that occupational dust and chemical exposure, be it through mining, stonemasonry, building or other trades, increases the risk of various systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs) including rheumatoid arthritis and systemic sclerosis. Although the pathogenic mechanisms of silica-induced autoimmunity are not fully elucidated, it is thought that alveolar macrophage ingestion of silica and the ensuing phagosomal damage is an initiating event that ultimately leads to production of autoantibodies and immune-mediated tissue injury. The purportedly causal association between occupational exposure to chemicals, such as organic solvents, and an increased risk of SARDs is less frequently recognized compared with silica dust, and its immunopathogenesis is less well understood. An appreciation of the importance of occupational dust and chemical exposures in the development of SARDs has implications for workplace health and safety regulations and offers a unique opportunity to better understand autoimmune disease pathogenesis and implement preventative strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We performed a scoping review of randomised clinical trials (RCTs) assessing pharmacological therapies for the initial management of lupus nephritis (LN), focusing on study design, included populations and outcome definitions, to assess the generalisability of their results and identify gaps in the evidence. METHODS RCTs evaluating pharmacological interventions for the initial therapy of LN published between 2000 and 2024 were evaluated. Extracted variables included study design, selection criteria, outcome definitions, populations recruited and clinical characteristics of participants. Each study arm was included as intervention and segregated into guideline-recommended regimens (cyclophosphamide (CYC), mycophenolic acid analogues (MPAAs), calcineurin inhibitors and belimumab) or other regimens. Data were analysed by descriptive statistics, and Fragility Index (FI) was estimated to assess robustness of studies. RESULTS We included 124 intervention arms within 61 RCT, involving 7058 participants. Seventy-nine arms (63.7%) corresponded to guideline-recommended therapies: 33 (26.6%) MPAA, 28 (22.6%) NIH-CYC and 7 (5.6%) triple-drug therapies. While 100% of triple-drug therapies RCT were multinational, only 7.1% of NIH-CYC and 0% of tacrolimus RCTs were conducted in more than one country. Only 9 (14.8%) had follow-up ≥24 months. Ten (16.4%) RCTs exclusively included participants with severe or refractory LN. Only 29 (47.5%) reported serious adverse events, and few described patient-reported outcomes. Black and other race participants were under-represented, as well as participants from Middle East, North Africa, and the sub-Saharan African region. Response was variably defined and assessed at different intervals. Robustness of RCTs evaluating double-drug guideline-recommended therapies were mostly low, with FI ranging from 1 to 3. CONCLUSIONS Considering new recommendations for the management of LN, we call for broader inclusion of under-represented populations and homogenisation of study design. This study provides the rationale for evaluating unexplored treatment comparisons and conducting research on newer interventions in clinical settings where evidence is currently lacking.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by self-antibody production and widespread inflammation affecting various body tissues. This disease is driven by the breakdown of immune tolerance, which promotes the activation of autoreactive B and T cells. A key feature of SLE is dysregulation in antigen presentation, where antigen-presenting cells (APCs) play a central role in perpetuating immune responses. Dendritic cells (DCs) are highly specialized for antigen presentation among APCs. At the same time, myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) can also express MHC-II molecules, although their role in SLE is less understood. Utilizing the SLE model, MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/J, we determined the presence of different phenotypes of DCs and MDSCs expressing MHC-II in secondary lymphoid organs, along with the gene expression of ICOSL, CD80 and CD86 in the spleen. Our study determined that the most abundant population of APCs in secondary lymphoid organs corresponds to cDC CD103-CD11b+ MHC-II+ throughout SLE development. Additionally, ICOSL expression increased over time, becoming more preponderant in week 16 in the SLE model, which could indicate that it is a crucial pathway for the development and progression of the pathology. In week 16, we observed a positive correlation between M-MDSC MHC-II and IFN-γ-producing CD4+ T cells.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects several organs, causing significant morbidity and increased mortality. It's more frequent in young, fertile women and can appear in all ethnic groups. The worldwide prevalence report indicates that there are at least 5 million patients with SLE. Although this disease can be found in every geographic region, certain races are more affected, such as Afro-American, Hispanic, and Asian populations. Furthermore, most of the epidemiologic information comes from Europe or the USA. In Latin America, only a few countries have reported data, like Argentina, Colombia, or Mexico, and even in these countries, the numbers vary.

Abstract
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a rare, heterogeneous, potentially life-threatening autoimmune disease. Presence of kidney or other major organ (brain, heart or lung) involvement are predictors of poor outcome and in a subset of patients resistant to 1st or 2nd line conventional treatment. The 10-year mortality remains around 10-15 %. Chimeric Antigen Receptors (CAR) are molecules that allow to redirect the engineered immune cells towards specific target antigens and to simultaneously boost their activation. Following breakthrough results observed in the treatment of hematological malignancies, conventional CAR T-cell therapy has recently been applied to refractory SLE patients. Compared to the use of monoclonal antibodies, anti-CD19 CAR T-cells allow to achieve deeper depletion of autoreactive B cells, notably at site of inflamed tissues and lymphoid organs (i.e. lymph node), to suppress interferon signature and to restore the immune tolerance with the reemergence of naïve B-cells with a new repertoire. All clinical data reported in SLE patients so far showed that autologous anti-CD19 CAR T-cell treatment allowed impressive short- and longer-term resolution of lupus nephritis and other severe disease-related manifestations, without major toxicities and only mild cytokine-release syndrome. These clinical effects persisted after B-cell reconstitution and were associated with normalization of double-stranded DNA antibodies and complement levels in drug-free patients until three years after the procedure. Overall, these pioneering experiences show unique clinical and immunological response to CAR T-cell therapy in SLE, and the need for extended follow-up to determine its long-term efficacy.

Abstract
Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are known to frequently suffer from comorbid cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). There are abundant data on cytokine levels and their role in the pathogenesis of SLE, while growth factors have received much less attention. The aim of this study was to analyze growth factor levels in SLE patients and their association with the presence of comorbid CVDs. The serum concentrations for the granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), nerve growth factor β (NGFβ), glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), and neuregulin-1 β (NRG-1β) were determined in the SLE patients (n = 35) and healthy individuals (n = 38) by a Luminex multiplex assay. The NGFβ and NRG-1β concentrations were shown to be significantly higher in the total group of SLE patients (median [Q1-Q3]: 3.6 [1.3-4.5] and 52.5 [8.5-148], respectively) compared with the healthy individuals (2.9 [1.3-3.4] and 13.7 [4.4-42] ng/mL, respectively). The GM-CSF and GDNF levels did not differ. Interestingly, elevated NRG-1β levels were associated with the presence of CVDs, as SLE patients with CVDs had significantly higher NRG-1β levels (99 [22-242]) compared with the controls (13.7 [4.4-42]) and patients without CVDs (19 [9-80] ng/mL). The model for the binary classification of SLE patients with and without CVDs based on the NRG-1β level had an average predictive ability (AUC = 0.67). Thus, altered levels of growth factors may be associated with comorbid CVDs in SLE patients.

Abstract
Pulmonary hypertension is a rare, incurable, and progressive disease. Although there is increasing evidence that immune disorders, particularly those associated with connective tissue diseases, are a strong predisposing factor in the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), there is currently a lack of knowledge about the detailed molecular mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon. Exploring this topic is crucial because patients with an immune disorder combined with PAH have a worse prognosis and higher mortality compared with patients with other PAH subtypes. Moreover, data recorded worldwide show that the prevalence of PAH in women is 2× to even 4× higher than in men, and the ratio of PAH associated with autoimmune diseases is even higher (9:1). Sexual dimorphism in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease was explained for many years by the action of female sex hormones. However, there are increasing reports of interactions between sex hormones and sex chromosomes, and differences in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease may be controlled not only by sex hormones but also by sex chromosome pathways that are not dependent on the gonads. This review discusses the role of estrogen and genetic factors including the role of genes located on the X chromosome, as well as the potential protective role of the Y chromosome in sexual dimorphism, which is prominent in the occurrence of PAH associated with autoimmune diseases. Moreover, an overview of animal models that could potentially play a role in further investigating the aforementioned link was also reviewed.

Abstract
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are pluripotent stem cells derived from mesoderm. Through cell-to-cell contact or paracrine effects, they carry out biological tasks like immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, regeneration, and repair. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are the primary mechanism for the paracrine regulation of MSCs. They deliver proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and other active compounds to various tissues and organs, thus facilitating intercellular communication. Rheumatic diseases may be treated using MSCs and MSC-derived EVs (MSC-EVs) due to their immunomodulatory capabilities, according to mounting data. Since MSC-EVs have low immunogenicity, high stability, and similar biological effects as to MSCs themselves, they are advantageous over cell therapy for potential therapeutic applications in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic erythematosus lupus, systemic sclerosis, Sjogren's syndrome, and other rheumatoid diseases. This review integrates recent advances in the characteristics, functions, and potential molecular mechanisms of MSC-EVs in rheumatic diseases and provides a new understanding of the pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases and MSC-EV-based treatment strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess treatment patterns and the association between long-term glucocorticoid (GC) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) use and damage accrual in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS A retrospective study including patients with SLE using the computerised database of a large health maintenance organisation. Patients were matched with subjects from the general population. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the association between GC cumulative daily doses, HCQ and comorbidities: Osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Models were adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic status, smoking, disease duration and HCQ use. RESULTS A total of 1073 patients with SLE were included, 87.79% were women. The age at first diagnosis was 37.23±14.36 and the SLE disease duration was 12.89±6.23 years. Initiation of HCQ within 12 months of SLE diagnosis increased from 51.02% in 2000 to 83.67% in 2010 and 93.02% in 2018. The annual usage of GC gradually decreased from 45.34% in 2000 to 30.76% in 2020. CVD and osteoporosis were more prevalent in SLE than in the general population. Multivariable logistic regression models revealed increased odds for comorbidities in patients receiving a mean daily dose of prednisone of more than 5 mg/day compared with those receiving 5 mg/day or less. CONCLUSIONS CVD and osteoporosis were more prevalent in SLE than in the general population. The dose and frequency of GC treatment in patients with SLE have decreased over the years. Prednisone usage in doses exceeding 5 mg/day is associated with significantly increased odds of osteoporosis and CVD.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a prevalent autoimmune disease primarily characterized by the involvement of multiple systems and organs. Cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of mortality in patients with SLE, though the mechanisms underlying the increased cardiovascular risk in SLE patients remain unclear. Recent studies indicate that abnormal activation of programmed cell death (PCD) signaling and the crosstalk among various forms of cell death are critical in the immunopathogenesis of SLE. Furthermore, apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, NETosis, and ferroptosis are recognized as key cellular processes in the pathogenesis of SLE and are closely linked to cardiac involvement. This review uniquely explores the intricate crosstalk between apoptosis, necroptosis, and other cell death pathways, discussing their roles and interactions in the pathogenesis of cardiac involvement in SLE. Investigating the interplay between PCD signaling and cardiac involvement in SLE in understanding the disease's underlying mechanisms and offers opportunities for new therapeutic interventions. The integration of precision medicine and innovative strategies targeting these complex pathways holds promise for enhancing the treatment prospects of SLE with cardiac involvement.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune condition that disproportionately impacts non-White ethnic and racial groups, particularly individuals in the African diaspora who experience heightened incidence, prevalence, and adverse outcomes. Genetic and epigenetic factors play significant roles in SLE risk, however these factors neither explain the whole of SLE risk nor the stark racial disparities we observe. Moreover, our understanding of genetic risk factors within African ancestry populations is limited due to social and environmental influences on research participation, disease presentation, and healthcare access. Globally, the African diaspora faces barriers in accessing essential SLE diagnostic tools, therapeutics, healthcare practitioners, and high-quality clinical and translational research studies. Here, we provide insights into the current state of genetic studies within African ancestry populations and highlight the unique challenges encountered in SLE care and research across countries of varying income levels. We also identify opportunities to address these disparities and promote scientific equity for individuals affected by SLE within the global African diaspora.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a common autoimmune disease with a polymorphic clinical presentation involving multisystem damages with significant differences in prevalence and disease severity among different ethnic groups. Although genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors have been demonstrated to contribute a lot to SLE, the pathogenesis of SLE is still unknown. Numerous evidence revealed that gene variants within the type I interferons (IFN) signaling pathway performed the great genetic associations with autoimmune diseases including SLE. To date, through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), genetic association studies showed that more than 100 susceptibility genes have been linked to the pathogenesis of SLE, among which TYK2, STAT1, STAT4, and IRF5 are important molecules directly connected to the type I interferon signaling system. The review summarized the genetic associations and the detailed risk loci of STAT4 and IRF5 with Asian SLE patients, explored the genotype distributions associated with the main clinical manifestations of SLE, and sorted out the potential reasons for the differences in susceptibility in Asia and Europe. Moreover, the therapies targeting STAT4 and IRF5 were also evaluated in order to propose more personalized and targeted treatment plans in SLE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune condition with significant physical, mental, psychosocial and economic impacts. A main driver of SLE morbidity and mortality is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Both SLE and CVD exhibit disparities related to gender, race and other social dimensions linked with biological outcomes and health trajectories. However, the biospsychosocial dimensions of CVD in SLE populations remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was to systematically investigate the existing literature around known social factors influencing the development of CVD in SLE. METHODS A scoping review protocol was developed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping reviews guidelines. The search strategy encompassed three main concepts: SLE, CVD and social factors. Four databases were searched (PubMed, SCOPUS, PsychINFO and CINAHL). 682 studies were identified for screening. Articles were screened in two phases (title/abstract and full text) to determine whether they fulfilled the selection criteria. RESULTS Nine studies were included after screening. All were conducted in the USA between 2009 and 2017. Six studies (67%) were cross-sectional and three (33%) were longitudinal. Most employed SLE cohorts (n=7, 78%) and two drew from healthcare databases (n=2; 22%). We identified five main themes encompassing social factors: socioeconomic status and education (n=5; 56%), race and/or ethnicity (n=7; 78%), mental health (n=2; 22%), gender (n=3; 33%) and healthcare quality and/or insurance (n=2; 22%). Overall, low income, fewer years of education, black race and/or ethnicity, depression, male gender, lack of insurance and healthcare fragmentation were all associated with CVD risk factors and outcomes in SLE. CONCLUSIONS While several social factors contribute to CVD in SLE populations, considerable gaps remain as many social determinants remain un(der)explored. There is rich opportunity to integrate social theory, advance conceptualisations of race and/or ethnicity and gender, expand investigations of mental health and explore novel geographical contexts. In healthcare policy and practice, identified social factors should be considered for SLE populations during decision-making and treatment, and education resources should be targeted for these groups.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has a spectrum of phenotypes. Its management should target remission or low disease activity, prevention of relapses and organ damage, minimisation of drug-related harms, and optimisation of health-related quality of life. Advances in our understanding of the disease pathophysiology have expanded the treatment armamentarium with targeted biologics that demonstrate superiority over conventional drugs in controlling activity, reducing flares and glucocorticoid exposure, and improving patient-related outcomes. In view of this, there is a critical need for real-world evidence providing insight into the spectrum of activity, the treatment landscape, and unmet needs among SLE patients. Such information can support regulatory and reimbursement decision-making. The primary objective of the NYMERIA multicentre study is to generate real-world evidence on the activity state of SLE patients treated in routine care settings in Greece. The overarching aim is to capture the disease burden based on both clinical aspects and the patient perspective.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic autoimmune disease characterised by the presence of autoantibodies towards nuclear antigens, immune complex deposition, and chronic inflammation at classic target organs such as skin, joints, and kidneys. Despite substantial advances in the diagnosis and management of SLE, the burden of disease remains high. It is important to appreciate the typical presentations and the diagnostic process to facilitate early referral and diagnosis for patients. In most patients, constitutional, mucocutaneous, and musculoskeletal symptoms represent the earliest complaints; these symptoms can include fatigue, lupus-specific rash, mouth ulcers, alopecia, joint pain, and myalgia. In this Seminar we will discuss a diagnostic approach to symptoms in light of the latest classification criteria, which include a systematic evaluation of clinical manifestations (weighted within each domain) and autoantibody profiles (such as anti-double-stranded DNA, anti-Sm, hypocomplementaemia, or antiphospholipid antibodies). Non-pharmacotherapy management is tailored to the individual, with specific lifestyle interventions and patient education to improve quality of life and medication (such as hydroxychloroquine or immunosuppressant) adherence. In the last decade, there have been a few major breakthroughs in approved treatments for SLE and lupus nephritis, such as belimumab, anifrolumab, and voclosporin. However the disease course remains variable and mortality unacceptably high. Access to these expensive medications has also been restricted across different regions of the world. Nonetheless, understanding of treatment goals and strategies has improved. We recognise that the main goal of treatment is the achievement of remission or low disease activity. Comorbidities due to both disease activity and treatment adverse effects, especially infections, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease, necessitate vigilant prevention and management strategies. Tailoring treatment options to achieve remission, while balancing treatment-related comorbidities, are priority areas of SLE management.

Abstract
Central nervous system (CNS) pathologies are a public health concern, with viral infections one of their principal causes. These viruses are known as neurotropic pathogens, characterized by their ability to infiltrate the CNS and thus interact with various cell populations, inducing several diseases. The immune response elicited by neurotropic viruses in the CNS is commanded mainly by microglia, which, together with other local cells, can secrete inflammatory cytokines to fight the infection. The most relevant neurotropic viruses are adenovirus (AdV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), enterovirus (EV), Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), and the newly discovered SARS-CoV-2. Several studies have associated a viral infection with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and neuropsychiatric lupus (NPSLE) manifestations. This article will review the knowledge about viral infections, CNS pathologies, and the immune response against them. Also, it allows us to understand the relevance of the different viral proteins in developing neuronal pathologies, SLE and NPSLE.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Sodium is vital for human health. High salt intake is a global health problem and is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Recent evidence suggests that both innate and adaptive immune systems are affected by sodium. In general, excess salt intake drives immune cells toward a pro-inflammatory phenotype. The incidence of autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is steadily increasing. As excess salt induces a pro-inflammatory state, increased salt intake may have impacts on autoimmune diseases. The relationship between salt intake and autoimmune diseases is most widely studied in patients with SLE or RA. This review aimed to summarize the relationship between salt intake and SLE and RA. RECENT FINDINGS Most, but not all, of these studies showed that high salt intake might promote SLE by M1 macrophage shift, increase in Th17/Treg cell ratio, activation of dendritic and follicular helper T cells, and increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In RA, apart from driving immune cells toward a pro-inflammatory state, high salt intake also influences cellular signaling pathways, including receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL), Rho GTPases, and MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase). There is now sufficient evidence that excess salt intake may be related to the development and progression of SLE and RA, although there are still knowledge gaps. More studies are warranted to further highlight the relationship between excess salt intake, SLE, and RA. Salt intake may affect cell types and pro-inflammatory cytokines and signaling pathways associated with the development and progression of systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Abstract
Purpose The purpose was to identify shared immune cells and co-disease genes in chronic heart failure (HF) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), as well as explore the potential mechanisms of action between HF and SLE. Methods A collection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from ten patients with HF and SLE and ten normal controls (NC) was used for transcriptome sequencing. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) analysis, enrichment analysis, immune infiltration analysis, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis, and machine learning were applied for the screening of shared immune cells and co-disease genes in HF and SLE. Gene expression analysis and correlation analysis were used to explore the potential mechanisms of co-disease genes and immune cells in HF and SLE. Results In this study, it was found that two immune cells, T cells CD4 naïve and Monocytes, displayed similar expression patterns in HF and SLE at the same time. By taking intersection of the above immune cell-associated genes with the DEGs common to both HF and SLE, four immune-associated co-disease genes, CCR7, RNASE2, RNASE3 and CXCL10, were finally identified. CCR7, as one of the four key genes, was significantly down-regulated in HF and SLE, while the rest three key genes were all significantly up-regulated in both diseases. Conclusion T cells CD4 naïve and Monocytes were first revealed as possible shared immune cells of HF and SLE, and CCR7, RNASE2, RNASE3 and CXCL10 were identified as possible key genes common to HF and SLE as well as potential biomarkers or therapeutic targets for HF and SLE.
