Intercomparison of dosimetry systems based on CaF2:Mn TL detectors

Comparison of luminescence detectors of Al2O3:C, CaF2:Mn, LiF:Mg,Cu,P and quartz with respect to retrospective dose reconstructions using bricks

In the aftermath of an orphan radiation source find, a complex retrospective dose reconstruction can be required to estimate doses of persons who were staying in the vicinity. In retrospective dose reconstructions based on luminescence measurements of quartz extracted from bricks, high sensitivity thermoluminescence detectors (TLD) can be used as an ancillary tool for dose distribution measurements or natural radiation background measurement. We investigated the potential and limits of Al₂O₃:C, CaF₂:Mn and LiF:Mg,Cu,P detectors for such applications. We measured depth-dose profiles in bricks using quartz and the TLDs. We factored in important dosimetry characteristics such as dose response, energy response and detection threshold. The work included Monte Carlo simulations. Depth-dose profiles and radiation spectra inside of the bricks were calculated for purposes of comparison and interpretation. The measurements and calculations were performed for two different photon spectra with mean energies of 662 and 118 keV. As regards comparison of the measured and Monte Carlo calculated depth-dose profiles, the best agreement was found for LiF:Mg,Cu,P. Quartz, Al₂O₃:C and CaF₂:Mn tend to overestimate dose for lower photon energies and greater depths in bricks. The overestimation was the most marked for CaF₂:Mn. For measurements related to quartz, especially for natural radiation background dose measurement, the most suitable TLDs are Al₂O₃:C and LiF:Mg,Cu,P. CaF₂:Mn is the least useful material.

Influence of solar activity on ambient dose equivalent H*(10) measured with thermoluminescent dosimeters in Slovenia

Ambient dose equivalent H*(10) is measured to assess general population exposure to ionising radiation. From its spatial and time variations it is possible to identify sources of exposure. In Slovenia, semi-annual H*(10) is measured routinely with thermoluminescence dosimeters at 66 locations around the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Krško and at 50 other locations covering the rest of Slovenian territory. Since the Chernobyl accident contamination had ceased to contribute to ambient dose equivalents, we have been calculating correlation coefficients between annual mean number of sunspots and annual H*(10). These correlation coefficients were calculated for five locations in western Slovenia and for five annual H*(10) extracted from measurements around NPP Krško. Their ranges between -0.64 and -0.38 suggest a clear negative correlation between solar activity and H*(10). Mean annual H*(10) averted by solar activity in the past two solar maxima reached 0.070 mSv around NPP Krško (155 m.a.s.l.) and 0.132 mSv and 0.180 mSv at Kredarica (2515 m.a.s.l.). Quantifying the influence of the solar activity on the ambient dose equivalent helps us to better understand exposure of the general population to ionising radiation.

A Transnational Intercomparison of Environmental Dosemeters in Realistic Environmental Conditions

Environmental dosemeters were benchmarked against various dosimetry systems in realistic environmental conditions. For the first time, the dosemeters, provided by two institutions from two different countries, were deployed at 20 sites in Slovenia and Croatia (near the Nuclear Power Plant, NPP Krško, Slovenia) during two semi-annual periods: summer-autumn and winter-spring. The results obtained using the different dosimetry systems show interesting features concerning local environmental peculiarities. The results of the intercomparison demonstrate an excellent agreement of the ambient doses measured independently by two different institutions and three passive dosimetry systems. Such consistency is crucial for the environmental dosimetry.

On the assessment of the performance of personal dosemeters and individual monitoring services

Based on recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, recommendations and requirements on the performance of dosimetric systems and individual monitoring services have been formulated in national and international standards and other documents of relevance. Although these all have essentially the same aim, the formulated criteria and the guidance given vary. Using the individual monitoring service of NRG in Arnhem and its thermoluminescence dosemeter as an example, the current paper reviews a number of ways to estimate the uncertainty in dose assessments and compares the criteria given in recommendations and standards. An attempt is made to contribute to some convergence of recommendations and requirements on aspects of dosimetric performance.
