Shaping the future of prevention in social work: an analysis of the professional literature from 2000 through 2010

Social work involvement on student interprofessional teams: a qualitative investigation

Social workers on interprofessional teams help highlight the mental health aspects of wellness and alert teams to potential social barriers to care. Social work students have been valued in new interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives across the United States; however, researchers have shown that social work practitioners often feel outside of and not valued by interprofessional teams. Social work student reflections were analyzed as research data to explore experiences on student IPE teams. This was an inductive, qualitative study informed by literary analysis methods, reading for power dynamics and implicit bias. This analysis uncovered social work students holding on to stereotypes of other professions as well as detrimental stereotypes of their own profession. Displays of respect for social work and early opportunities for successful advocacy allowed social work students to feel confident in their role and encouraged participation. This study considers how social work participation can be encouraged on interprofessional student teams.

Can the interconnection between public health and social work help address current and future population health challenges? A public health viewpoint

The debate over the function and role of public health in all societies (high, middle, and low-income) still continues today. Public health needs to interact with the social and translational sciences to achieve the best possible scientific evidence and practice aimed at development of effective policies for individual and population health practices. As a field, public health is most suited for development of transdisciplinary education, research and practice—improving population health would entail embedding with a variety of other disciplines including social work. Public health and social work in many ways share the same beginnings as well as their role in advocacy for social and health equity. For this reason, the transdisciplinary profession of public health social work is well placed to develop and build the inter-professional and cross-sectoral collaboration that is needed to address the many health challenges of the 21st century, based on theories, knowledge and interventions from both public health and social work. Furthermore, the profession can help in attempting to close the health inequalities gap, address social isolation, family violence and homelessness, advance long and productive lives, create social responses to the changing environment, reduce economic inequality, harness technology for social good, and work toward the achievement of justice and equality of opportunity.

Towards a contemporary social care 'prevention narrative' of principled complexity: An integrative literature review

Prevention has become increasingly central in social care policy and commissioning strategies within the United Kingdom (UK). Commonly there is reliance on understandings borrowed from the sphere of public health, leaning on a prevention discourse characterised by the 'upstream and downstream' metaphor. Whilst framing both structural factors and responses to individual circumstances, the public health approach nonetheless suggests linearity in a cause and effect relationship. Social care and illness follow many trajectories and this conceptualisation of prevention may limit its effectiveness and scope in social care. Undertaken as part of a commissioned evaluation of the Social Services and Wellbeing Act (2014) Wales, a systematic integrative review was conducted to establish the key current debates within prevention work, and how prevention is conceptually framed, implemented and evaluated within the social care context. The databases Scopus, ASSIA, CINAHL and Social Care Online were initially searched in September 2019 resulting in 52 documents being incorporated for analysis. A further re-run of searches was run in March 2021, identifying a further 14 documents, thereby creating a total of 66. Predominantly, these were journal articles or research reports (n = 53), with the remainder guidance or strategy documents, briefings or process evaluations (n = 13). These were categorised by their primary theme and focus, as well as document format and research method before undergoing thematic analysis. This highlighted the continued prominence of three-tiered, linear public health narratives in the framing of prevention for social care, with prevention work often categorised and enacted with inconsistency. Common drivers for prevention activity continue to be cost reduction and reduced dependence on the care system in the future. Through exploring prevention for older people and caregivers, we argue for an approach to prevention aligning with the complexities of the social world surrounding it. Building on developments in complexity theory in social science and healthcare, we offer an alternative view of social care prevention guided by principles rooted in the everyday realities of communities, service users and caregivers.

Assessing the Impact of a Healthy Relationships Curriculum on Native American Adolescents

This study suggests Discovery Dating, a healthy relationships curriculum, as one way of preventing teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, and sexual assault. This study seeks to determine what theory of change best aligns with Discovery Dating, by assessing the curriculum's impact on adolescent resilience, self-efficacy, and personal agency, which are suggested as protective factors against teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Authors describe the implementation of the Discovery Dating program in a western U.S. tribal middle school during the 2011-2012 school year. The resilience, self-efficacy, and personal agency outcomes of seventh grade students who received the Discovery Dating curriculum were investigated through pre- and posttest analysis and compared with the outcomes of an eighth grade comparison group that did not receive the Discovery Dating curriculum. Findings suggest that Discovery Dating affects Native American middle school students' sense of personal agency.

Opportunities for social work under the Affordable Care Act: A call for action

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has profoundly restructured American health care. Numerous social work authors have commented on the importance of the ACA's reforms to social work practice, education, and research. This article summarizes the literature, adds relevant information, and makes recommendations for future actions. The policy, opinion, and peer-reviewed literatures were systematically reviewed. Sixty-three publications appeared between 2010 and 2015 are included. Five themes emerged, as follows: 1) the crucial provisions of the ACA, 2) the natural affinity of social work and the ACA reforms, 3) curricular adaptations needed to address changing workforce needs, 4) areas for continued social work advocacy, and 5) opportunities for high-impact social work research. This article provides a comprehensive introduction to the ACA, its reforms, and opportunities for social work to assume a high visibility leadership role in implementing the reforms, with particular emphasis on needed curricular changes and opportunities for research.
