Dynamic Modulation of Beta Band Cortico-Muscular Coupling Induced by Audio-Visual Rhythms

Impacts of audiovisual simultaneity perception on single-task and dual-task gaits in middle-aged and older adults

BACKGROUND

While dual-task walking requires the ability to integrate sensory information from multiple ongoing sources, it remains unknown whether dual-task walking is more affected than single-task walking by the multisensory integration ability.

RESEARCH QUESTION

How does the audiovisual temporal integration ability affect single-task and dual-task gaits in the aging population?

METHODS

One hundred and thirty healthy middle-aged and older adults (age = 64.7 ± 6.4 years) completed an audiovisual simultaneity judgment (AVSJ) task and underwent single-task, motor dual-task, and cognitive dual-task gait assessments. In the AVSJ task, participants judged whether a flash and an auditory stimulus presented at different stimulus onset asynchronies were simultaneous. The accuracy and precision of the AVSJ performance were assessed using the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) and the temporal binding window (δ), respectively. A lower absolute PSS and δ indicated better performance. Participants held a cup of water and performed serial-7 subtraction for motor and cognitive dual-task gait assessments, respectively. The spatiotemporal gait parameters and their variability were calculated. The influences of PSS and δ on the gait parameters of the three gaits were examined with multiple hierarchical regressions.

RESULTS

Only the cognitive dual-task gait was significantly affected by PSS and δ. Greater PSS predicted a longer single support time (β = 0.195, p = 0.024) and its variability (β = 0.224, p = 0.011). Greater δ predicted greater step time variability (β = 0.198, p = 0.022).

SIGNIFICANCE

Declined perception of audiovisual simultaneity particularly degrades temporal control of cognitive dual-task walking, highlighting the importance of assessing and training this ability after midlife.

The neuromechanical of Beta-band corticomuscular coupling within the human motor system

Beta-band activity in the sensorimotor cortex is considered a potential biomarker for evaluating motor functions. The intricate connection between the brain and muscle (corticomuscular coherence), especially in beta band, was found to be modulated by multiple motor demands. This coherence also showed abnormality in motion-related disorders. However, although there has been a substantial accumulation of experimental evidence, the neural mechanisms underlie corticomuscular coupling in beta band are not yet fully clear, and some are still a matter of controversy. In this review, we summarized the findings on the impact of Beta-band corticomuscular coherence to multiple conditions (sports, exercise training, injury recovery, human functional restoration, neurodegenerative diseases, age-related changes, cognitive functions, pain and fatigue, and clinical applications), and pointed out several future directions for the scientific questions currently unsolved. In conclusion, an in-depth study of Beta-band corticomuscular coupling not only elucidates the neural mechanisms of motor control but also offers new insights and methodologies for the diagnosis and treatment of motor rehabilitation and related disorders. Understanding these mechanisms can lead to personalized neuromodulation strategies and real-time neurofeedback systems, optimizing interventions based on individual neurophysiological profiles. This personalized approach has the potential to significantly improve therapeutic outcomes and athletic performance by addressing the unique needs of each individual.

Auditory Stimulation Improves Gait and Posture in Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review with Between- and Within-Group Meta-Analysis

The past decade has seen an increased interest in the implementation of auditory stimulation (AStim) for managing gait and postural deficits in people with cerebral palsy. Although existing reviews report beneficial effects of AStim on the spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters of gait, there are still numerous limitations that need to be addressed to correctly interpret these results. For instance, existing reviews have failed to characterize the effects of AStim by conducting separate between and within-group meta-analyses, these reviews have not evaluated the influence of AStim on postural outcomes, and nor have included several high-quality existing trials. In this study, we conducted between- and within-group meta-analyses to establish a state of evidence for the influence of AStim on gait and postural outcomes in people with cerebral palsy. We searched the literature according to PRISMA-P guidelines across 10 databases. Of 1414 records, 14 studies, including a total of 325 people with cerebral palsy, met the inclusion criterion. We report a significant enhancement in gait speed, stride length, cadence, and gross motor function (standing and walking) outcomes with AStim compared to conventional physiotherapy. The findings from this analysis reveal the beneficial influence of AStim on the spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters of gait and postural stability in people with cerebral palsy. Furthermore, we discuss the futurized implementation of smart wearables that can deliver person-centred AStim rehabilitation in people with cerebral palsy.

Differential motor system entrainment to auditory and visual rhythms

Perception of, and synchronization to, auditory rhythms is known to be more accurate than with flashing visual rhythms. The motor system is known to play a role in the processing of timing information for auditory rhythm perception, but it is unclear if the motor system plays the same role for visual rhythm perception. One demonstrated component of auditory rhythm perception is neural entrainment at the frequency of the auditory rhythm. In this study, we use EEG to measure the entrainment of both auditory and visual rhythms from the motor cortex while subjects either tapped in synchrony with or passively attended to the presented rhythms. To isolate activity from motor cortex, we used independent component analysis to first separate out neural sources, then selected components using a combination of component topography, dipole location, mu activation, and beta modulation. This process took advantage of the fact that tapping activity results in reduced mu power, and characteristic beta modulation, which helped select motor components. Our findings suggest neural entrainment in motor components was stronger for visual rhythms than auditory rhythms and strongest during the tapping conditions for both modalities. We also find mu power increased in response to both auditory and visual rhythms. These findings indicate that the generally greater rhythm perception capabilities of the auditory system over the visual system may not depend entirely on neural entrainment in the motor system, but rather how the motor system is able to use the timing information made available to it. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We investigated neural entrainment in the motor system for both auditory and visual isochronous rhythms using electroencephalogram. Counter to expectations, our findings suggest stronger entrainment for visual rhythms than for auditory rhythms. Motor system activity was isolated with a novel procedure using independent component analysis as a means of blind source separation, along with known markers of mu activity from the motor system to identify motor components.

Time Perception for Musical Rhythms: Sensorimotor Perspectives on Entrainment, Simulation, and Prediction

Neural mechanisms supporting time perception in continuously changing sensory environments may be relevant to a broader understanding of how the human brain utilizes time in cognition and action. In this review, we describe current theories of sensorimotor engagement in the support of subsecond timing. We focus on musical timing due to the extensive literature surrounding movement with and perception of musical rhythms. First, we define commonly used but ambiguous concepts including neural entrainment, simulation, and prediction in the context of musical timing. Next, we summarize the literature on sensorimotor timing during perception and performance and describe current theories of sensorimotor engagement in the support of subsecond timing. We review the evidence supporting that sensorimotor engagement is critical in accurate time perception. Finally, potential clinical implications for a sensorimotor perspective of timing are highlighted.

Dynamic corticomuscular multi-regional modulations during finger movement revealed by time-varying network analysis

OBJECTIVE

A body movement involves the complicated information exchange between the central and peripheral systems, which is characterized by the dynamical coupling patterns between the multiple brain areas and multiple muscle units. How the central and peripheral nerves coordinate multiple internal brain regions and muscle groups is very important when accomplishing the action.

APPROACH

In this study, we extend the adaptive directed transfer function to construct the time-varying networks between multiple corticomuscular regions and divide the movement duration into different stages by the time-varying corticomuscular network patterns.

MAIN RESULTS

The inter dynamical corticomuscular network demonstrated the different interaction patterns between the central and peripheral systems during the different hand movement stages. The muscles transmit bottom-up movement information in the preparation stage, but the brain issues top-down control commands and dominates in the execution stage, and finally, the brain's dominant advantage gradually weakens in the relaxation stage. When classifying the different movement stages based on time-varying corticomuscular network indicators, an average accuracy above 74% could be reliably achieved.

SIGNIFICANCE

The findings of this study help deepen our knowledge of central-peripheral nerve pathways and coordination mechanisms, and also provide opportunities for monitoring and regulating movement disorders.

Lateralised dynamic modulations of corticomuscular coherence associated with bimanual learning of rhythmic patterns

Human movements are spontaneously attracted to auditory rhythms, triggering an automatic activation of the motor system, a central phenomenon to music perception and production. Cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) in the theta, alpha, beta and gamma frequencies has been used as an index of the synchronisation between cortical motor regions and the muscles. Here we investigated how learning to produce a bimanual rhythmic pattern composed of low- and high-pitch sounds affects CMC in the beta frequency band. Electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) from the left and right First Dorsal Interosseus and Flexor Digitorum Superficialis muscles were concurrently recorded during constant pressure on a force sensor held between the thumb and index finger while listening to the rhythmic pattern before and after a bimanual training session. During the training, participants learnt to produce the rhythmic pattern guided by visual cues by pressing the force sensors with their left or right hand to produce the low- and high-pitch sounds, respectively. Results revealed no changes after training in overall beta CMC or beta oscillation amplitude, nor in the correlation between the left and right sides for EEG and EMG separately. However, correlation analyses indicated that left- and right-hand beta EEG-EMG coherence were positively correlated over time before training but became uncorrelated after training. This suggests that learning to bimanually produce a rhythmic musical pattern reinforces lateralised and segregated cortico-muscular communication.

Functional mapping of language-related areas from natural, narrative speech during awake craniotomy surgery

Accurate localization of brain regions responsible for language and cognitive functions in epilepsy patients is important. Electrocorticography (ECoG)-based real-time functional mapping (RTFM) has been shown to be a safer alternative to electrical cortical stimulation mapping (ESM), which is currently the clinical/gold standard. Conventional methods for analyzing RTFM data mostly account for the ECoG signal in certain frequency bands, especially high gamma. Compared to ESM, they have limited accuracy when assessing channel responses. In the present study, we developed a novel RTFM method based on tensor component analysis (TCA) to address the limitations of current estimation methods. Our approach analyzes the whole frequency spectrum of the ECoG signal during natural continuous speech. We construct third-order tensors that contain multichannel time-frequency information and use TCA to extract low-dimensional temporal, spectral and spatial modes. Temporal modulation scores (correlation values) are then calculated between the time series of voice envelope features and TCA-estimated temporal courses, and significant temporal modulation determines which components' channel weightings are displayed to the neurosurgeon as a guide for follow-up ESM. In our experiments, data from thirteen patients with refractory epilepsy were recorded during preoperative evaluation for their epileptogenic zones (EZs), which were located adjacent to the eloquent cortex. Our results showed higher detection accuracy of our proposed method in a narrative speech task, suggesting that our method complements ESM and is an improvement over the prior RTFM method. To our knowledge, this is the first TCA-based method to pinpoint language-specific brain regions during continuous speech that uses whole-band ECoG.

Modality-specific frequency band activity during neural entrainment to auditory and visual rhythms

Rhythm perception depends on the ability to predict the onset of rhythmic events. Previous studies indicate beta band modulation is involved in predicting the onset of auditory rhythmic events (Fujioka et al., 2009, 2012; Snyder & Large, 2005). We sought to determine if similar processes are recruited for prediction of visual rhythms by investigating whether beta band activity plays a role in a modality-dependent manner for rhythm perception. We looked at electroencephalography time-frequency neural correlates of prediction using an omission paradigm with auditory and visual rhythms. By using omissions, we can separate out predictive timing activity from stimulus-driven activity. We hypothesized that there would be modality-independent markers of rhythm prediction in induced beta band oscillatory activity, and our results support this hypothesis. We find induced and evoked predictive timing in both auditory and visual modalities. Additionally, we performed an exploratory-independent components-based spatial clustering analysis, and describe all resulting clusters. This analysis reveals that there may be overlapping networks of predictive beta activity based on common activation in the parietal and right frontal regions, auditory-specific predictive beta in bilateral sensorimotor regions, and visually specific predictive beta in midline central, and bilateral temporal/parietal regions. This analysis also shows evoked predictive beta activity in the left sensorimotor region specific to auditory rhythms and implicates modality-dependent networks for auditory and visual rhythm perception.
