Tree physiological responses after biotic and abiotic disturbances revealed by a dual isotope approach

Contrasting water-use strategies to climate warming in white birch and larch in a boreal permafrost region

The effects of rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations (Ca) with climate warming on intrinsic water-use efficiency and radial growth in boreal forests are still poorly understood. We measured tree-ring cellulose δ13C, δ18O, and tree-ring width in Larix dahurica (larch) and Betula platyphylla (white birch), and analyzed their relationships with climate variables in a boreal permafrost region of northeast China over past 68 years covering a pre-warming period (1951-1984; base period) and a warm period (1985-2018; warm period). We found that white birch but not larch significantly increased their radial growth over the warm period. The increased intrinsic water-use efficiency in both species was mainly driven by elevated Ca but not climate warming. White birch but not larch showed significantly positive correlations between tree-ring δ13C, δ18O and summer maximum temperature as well as vapor pressure deficit in the warm period, suggesting a strong stomatal response in the broad-leaved birch to temperature changes. The climate warming-induced radial growth enhancement in white birch is primarily associated with a conservative water-use strategy. In contrast, larch exhibits a profligate water-use strategy. It implies an advantage for white birch over larch in the warming permafrost regions.

Atmospheric particulate matter retention capacity of bark and leaves of urban tree species

Urban vegetation can effectively filter and adsorb particulate matter (PM). However, limited studies have been conducted on the PM retention capacity of tree barks. This study investigated the ability of five common urban tree species in the Yangtze River Delta region to retain PM through their barks and leaves by conducting a 14-day tree PM retention experiment on the five tree species during autumn and winter. The results showed that (1) the PM retention per unit area of bark was 6.9 times and 11.8 times higher than that of leaves during autumn and winter, respectively; (2) when considering total surface area, bark and leaves exhibited comparable PM retention capacities at the whole-plant scale; (3) the ability of bark to retain PM is species-specific, which can be attributed to different bark morphology among different tree species; and (4) bark and leaves exhibited distinct preferences for retaining PM of different particle sizes, even when exposed to similar environmental conditions. This study highlights the remarkable ability of tree bark to PM removal and provides valuable insights into the role of urban trees in mitigating PM pollution. Furthermore, these findings can provide valuable insights into studies on dry deposition modelling, urban planning, and green space management strategies.

Progress in high-resolution isotope-ratio analysis of tree rings using laser ablation

Stable isotope ratio analysis of tree rings has been widely and successfully applied in recent decades for climatic and environmental reconstructions. These studies were mostly conducted at an annual resolution, considering one measurement per tree ring, often focusing on latewood. However, much more information could be retrieved with high-resolution intra-annual isotope studies, based on the fact that the wood cells and the corresponding organic matter are continuously laid down during the growing season. Such studies are still relatively rare, but have a unique potential for reconstructing seasonal climate variations or short-term changes in physiological plant properties, like water-use efficiency. The reason for this research gap is mostly technical, as on the one hand sub-annual, manual splitting of rings is very tedious, while on the other hand automated laser ablation for high-resolution analyses is not yet well established and available. Here, we give an update on the current status of laser ablation research for analysis of the carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of wood, describe an easy-to-use laser ablation system, its operation and discuss practical issues related to tree core preparation, including cellulose extraction. The results show that routine analysis with up to 100 laser shot-derived δ13C-values daily and good precision and accuracy (ca. 0.1‰) comparable to conventional combustion in an elemental analyzer are possible. Measurements on resin-extracted wood is recommended as most efficient, but laser ablation is also possible on cellulose extracted wood pieces. Considering the straightforward sample preparation, the technique is therefore ripe for wide-spread application. With this work, we hope to stimulate future progress in the promising field of high-resolution environmental reconstruction using laser ablation.

Stable isotopes in tree rings record physiological trends in Larix gmelinii after fires

Fire is an important regulator of ecosystem dynamics in boreal forests, and especially has a complicated association with growth and physiological processes of fire-tolerant tree species. Stable isotope ratios in tree rings are used extensively in eco-physiological studies for evaluating the impact of past environmental (e.g., drought, air pollution) factors on tree growth and physiological processes. Yet, such studies based on carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotope ratios in tree rings are rarely conducted on fire effect, especially not well explored for fire-tolerant trees. In this study, we investigated variations in basal area increment and isotopes of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. before and after three moderate fires (different fire years) at three sites across the Great Xing'an Mountains, Northeastern China. We found that the radial growth of L. gmelinii trees has significantly declined after the fires across study sites. Following the fires, a simultaneous increase in δ13C and δ18O has strengthened the link between the two isotopes. Further, fires have significantly enhanced the 13C-derived intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) and largely altered the relationships between δ13C, δ18O, iWUE and climate (temperature and precipitation). A dual-isotope conceptual model revealed that an initial co-increase in δ13C and δ18O in the fire year can be mainly attributed to a reduction in stomatal conductance with a constant photosynthetic rate. However, this physiological response would shift to different patterns over post-fire time between sites, which might be partly related to spring temperature. This study is beneficial to better understand, in a physiological perspective, how fire-tolerant tree species adapt to a fire-prone environment. We also remind that the limitation of model assumptions and constraints may challenge model applicability and further inferred physiological response.

Quantifying the capacity of tree branches for retaining airborne submicron particles

Human health risks brought by fine atmospheric particles raise scholarly and policy awareness about the role of urban trees as bio-filters of air pollution. While a large number of empirical studies have focused on the characteristics of vegetation leaves and their effects on atmospheric particle retention, the dry deposition of particles on branches, which plays a significant role in capturing and retaining particles during the defoliation period and contributes substantially to total removal of atmospheric particles, is under-investigated. To fill in this knowledge gap, this case study examined the dry deposition velocities (V_d) of submicron particulate matters (PM₁) on the branches of six common deciduous species in Shanghai (China) using laboratory experiments. And the association between V_d and key branch anatomical traits (including surface roughness, perimeter, rind width proportion, lenticel density, peeling, and groove/ridge characteristics) was explored. It was found that surface roughness would increase V_d, as a rougher surface significantly increases turbulence, which is conducive to particle diffusion. By contrast, peeling, branch perimeter, and lenticel density would decrease V_d. Peeling represents the exfoliated remains on the branch surfaces which may flutter considerably with airflow, leading to particle resuspension and low V_d. When branch perimeter increases, the boundary layer of branches thickens and a wake area appears, increasing the difficulty of particles to reach branch surface, and reducing V_d. While lenticels can increase the roughness of branch surface, their pointy shape would uplift airflow and cause a leeward wake area, lowering V_d. This finely wrought study contributes to a better understanding of branch dry deposition during leaf-off seasons and potential of deciduous trees serving as nature-based air filters all year round in urban environments.

Differential responses of leaf photosynthesis to insect and pathogen outbreaks: A global synthesis

Outbreak of insects or pathogens (referred to as biotic disturbance), which is projected to continually increase in a warmer climate, may profoundly affect plant photosynthesis and production. However, the response of plant photosynthesis to biotic disturbance remains unclear, especially differences in response between insects and pathogens, which hinders the prediction of plant productivity in future climate. In this study, a meta-analysis approach was used to examine effects of insects and pathogens on photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area (Pn) and the associated characteristics from 115 studies. Our results showed that biotic disturbance significantly decreased Pn by 34.8% but increased Rd by 26.2%. Most of parameters associated with Pn were significantly reduced by biotic disturbance, including g_s, T_r, photosynthetic pigments (e.g., a+b, a, and b), and chlorophyll fluorescence properties (Fv/Fm, q_p). The disturbance type (insects vs pathogens) was the most important factor affecting the response of Pn, with a greater decrease in Pn by pathogens (-37.5%) than insects (-28.0%). The response ratio of Pn was positively correlated with that of g_s and Tr for both insects and pathogens, while negatively with C_i and positively with Chl a+b, Φ_PSII, and q_p for only pathogens. In addition, the higher sensitivity of Pn to biotic disturbance in crop than non-crop plants poses a great challenge to agricultural system in the future. The weighted response ratio of Pn and relationships of Pn with other associated paramerters under insect and pathogen disturbance will facilitate vegetation models to integrate the effects of biotic disturbance on primary production, improving predicition of the ecosystem carbon cyling in combining with leaf area measurement.
