Using electrical resistivity tomography to differentiate sapwood from heartwood: application to conifers

Reproducibility of Stress Wave and Electrical Resistivity Tomography for Tree Assessment

(1) Background: Tomography is widely used in tree risk assessment and forest ecology. Tomograms should be accurate, repeatable and comparable between consecutive measurements. This is the first longitudinal study addressing reproducibility over a period of several years and the key factors influencing it, from raw data to final tomograms. (2) Methods: Trees were either repeatedly measured by the same researcher over periods of hours to months, by different researchers using either the same or a new installation of the same equipment, or with different tomographs. (3) Results: Overall, differences between tomograms were small and without impact on the assessment of the safety of the tree. Between initial and follow-up measurements after 2 to 5 years, the coefficients of correlation of stress wave velocity ranged from 0.75 to 0.96, those of loss in section modulus estimated from tomograms ranged from 0.82 to 0.93. The coefficient of correlation of repeated sapwood area estimates with electrical resistivity tomography was 0.97. The major cause of deviations was variation in the sensor positions between repeated tomographies, and, for electrical resistivity tomography, variation of temperature. (4) Conclusion: Provided that sensor positions are accurately recorded and documented, tomograms can reliably be repeated by different assessors over periods of years. Assessments based on complex calculations like loss of section modulus should be treated with caution, because they accumulate and amplify all sources of variation.

Freezing resistance evaluation of rose stems during frost dehardening using electrical impedance tomography

BACKGROUND

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has rarely been applied in plant science, particularly to study plant resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. In this study, we evaluated the freezing resistance of floribunda roses (Rosa Floribunda) during frost dehardening using the EIT technique to identify a new method for rapid and non-destructive measurement of plant freezing resistance.

RESULTS

The current was the excitation source, the boundary voltage value was measured, and then the boundary voltage reconstructed value was formed. Using an imaging algorithm, the two-dimensional (2D) distribution of impedance or impedance variation was reconstructed. The EIT reconstructed values decreased obviously with the decline in freezing temperatures. The EIT reconstructed values of stems had the best fit to the logistic equation, and subsequently, the semi-lethal temperatures were calculated. The freezing resistance results evaluated using EIT reconstructed values were linearly correlated with the results of the traditional electrolyte leakage (EL) method (r = 0.93, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, after freezing tests, the reconstructed values of EIT images could be used to quantitatively evaluate the freezing resistance of floribunda rose stems. The present study provides a reference for the further application of the EIT technique for non-destructive and rapid detection of plant freezing resistance.

Using electrical impedance tomography for rapid determination of starch and soluble sugar contents in Rosa hybrida

Soluble sugars and starches are important metabolites of plant life and physiological markers of plant stress response. There is an urgent need to develop a non-destructive and rapid method for determining plant starch and soluble sugar contents. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) technology has been used to determine the physiological state and cold resistance of select plant tissues. However, so far there have been no reports on the use of EIT for the rapid estimation of soluble sugar and starch contents. In this study, EIT was used to obtain reconstructed voltage values and estimate starch and soluble sugar contents in the stems of three Rosa hybrida cultivars during February to May, which were grown in the Specimen Park (38° 50′ N, 115° 26′ E) of Hebei Agricultural University, Baoding City, Hebei Province, China. Stems from two of the cultivars were used for establishing regression models for starch and soluble sugar contents as functions of reconstructed voltage values. The third cultivar was used to test the accuracy of the regression models. The quadratic regression model was best for determining soluble sugar content and the logarithmic regression model was best for determining starch content. Thus, this research provided technical support for using EIT to analyze changes in physiological parameters and to rapidly estimate physiological indexes of plants. More studies were now needed to validate the results in this paper.

Hydraulic acclimation in a Mediterranean oak subjected to permanent throughfall exclusion results in increased stem hydraulic capacitance

Stem water storage capacity and hydraulic capacitance (C_S ) play a crucial role in tree survival under drought-stress. To investigate whether C_S adjusts to increasing water deficit, variation in stem water content (StWC) was monitored in vivo for 2 years and related to periodical measurements of tree water potential in Mediterranean Quercus ilex trees subjected either to permanent throughfall exclusion (TE) or to control conditions. Seasonal reductions in StWC were larger in TE trees relative to control ones, resulting in greater seasonal C_S (154 and 80 kg m^-3 MPa^-1 , respectively), but only during the first phase of the desorption curve, when predawn water potential was above -1.1 MPa. Below this point, C_S decreased substantially and did not differ between treatments (<20 kg m^-3 MPa^-1 ). The allometric relationship between tree diameter and sapwood area, measured via electrical resistivity tomography, was not affected by TE. Our results suggest that (a) C_S response to water deficit in the drought-tolerant Q. ilex might be more important to optimize carbon gain during well-hydrated periods than to prevent drought-induced embolism formation during severe drought stress, and (b) enhanced C_S during early summer does not result from proportional increases in sapwood volume, but mostly from increased elastic water.

Insights into trunks of Pinus cembra L.: analyses of hydraulics via electrical resistivity tomography

The lack of elevational changes in electrical resistivity in Pinus cembra trunks indicated consistent growth and hydraulics across elevations. Though, electrical resistivity tomograms exhibited pronounced temperature-driven seasonal changes.

ABSTRACT

Alpine conifers growing at high elevation are exposed to low temperatures, which may limit xylogenesis and cause pronounced seasonal changes in tree hydraulics. Electrical resistivity (ER) tomography enables minimal invasive monitoring of stems in situ. We used this technique to analyze Pinus cembra trunks along a 400 m elevational gradient up to the timberline and over seasons. Furthermore, ER data of earlywood across tree rings were compared with the respective specific hydraulic conductivity (K S), measured on extracted wood cores. ER tomograms revealed pronounced changes over the year and a strong correlation between average ER (ERmean) and air and xylem temperatures. Surprisingly, no elevational changes in ERmean, earlywood ER or K S were observed. ER data corresponded to variation in earlywood K S, which decreased from the youngest (ca. 4-5 cm2s-1 MPa-1) to the oldest tree rings (0.63 ± 0.22 cm2s-1 MPa-1). The lack of changes in ER data and earlywood K S along the study transect indicated consistent growth patterns and no major changes in structural and functional hydraulic traits across elevation. The constant decrease in earlywood K S with tree ring age throughout all elevations highlights the hydraulic relevance of the outermost tree rings in P. cembra. Seasonal measurements demonstrated pronounced temperature effects on ER, and we thus recommend a detailed monitoring of trunk temperatures for ER tomography.

Fire effects on tree physiology

Heat injuries sustained in a fire can initiate a cascade of complex mechanisms that affect the physiology of trees after fires. Uncovering the exact physiological mechanisms and relating specific injuries to whole-plant and ecosystem functioning is the focus of intense current research. Recent studies have made critical steps forward in our understanding of tree physiological processes after fires, and have suggested mechanisms by which fire injuries may interact with disturbances such as drought, insects and pathogens. We outline a conceptual framework that unifies the involved processes, their interconnections, and possible feedbacks, and contextualizes these responses with existing hypotheses for disturbance effects on plants and ecosystems. By focusing on carbon and water as currencies of plant functioning, we demonstrate fire-induced cambium/phloem necrosis and xylem damage to be main disturbance effects. The resulting carbon starvation and hydraulic dysfunction are linked with drought and insect impacts. Evaluating the precise process relationships will be crucial for fully understanding how fires can affect tree functionality, and will help improve fire risk assessment and mortality model predictions. Especially considering future climate-driven increases in fire frequency and intensity, knowledge of the physiological tree responses is important to better estimate postfire ecosystem dynamics and interactions with climate disturbances.

Electrical resistivity tomography: patterns in Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris

Electrical resistivity (ER) tomography is a promising technique to minimally invasively study stems of living trees. It allows insights into xylem properties based on the cross-sectional distribution of ER that is governed by the wood's electrical conductance. In this study, ER measurements were carried out on four forest tree species, Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris, to demonstrate interspecific, intraspecific and within-tree variation of ER tomograms. Further, ER patterns were linked to xylem moisture content (MC), electrolyte content and density obtained from wood core analyses. The ER patterns of both coniferous species, P. abies and P. sylvestris, were found to be more homogenous and concentric compared with the complex tomograms of angiosperms. However, the ER range of coniferous trees showed considerable intraspecific variation. Measurements near ground level showed pronounced effects on ER tomograms, highlighting the importance of the chosen measurement height. A strong relation between ER and wood density was found in F. sylvatica while ER patterns of conifers were mainly influenced by MC. Results demonstrate a high species specificity of ER tomograms and of respective influencing xylem traits. They underline the importance of reference measurements for a correct interpretation of ER studies.

Electric resistance tomography and stress wave tomography for decay detection in trees-a comparison study

Background

To ensure the safety of trees, two NDT (nondestructive testing) techniques, electric resistance tomography and stress wave tomography, were employed to quantitatively detect and characterize the internal decay of standing trees. Comparisons between those two techniques were done to make full use of the individual capability for decay detection.

Methods

Eighty trees (40 Manchurian ash and 40 Populus simonii) were detected, then wood increment cores were obtained from each cross disc trial. The D_t, which was defined as the value determined by the mass loss ratio of each wood core, was regarded as the true severity of decay. Using ordinary least-squares regression to analyze the relationship between D_t and D_e (D_e was defined as the severity of decay determined by electric resistance tomography) and between D_t and D_s (D_s was defined as the severity of decay determined by stress wave tomography).

Results

The results showed that both methods could estimate the severity of decay in trees. In terms of different stages of decay, when D_t < 30%, D_e had a strong positive correlation with D_t (R² = 0.677, P < 0.01), while, when D_t ≥ 30%, D_s had a significant positive correlation relationship with D_t (R² = 0.645, P < 0.01).

Conclusion

Electric resistance tomography was better than stress wave tomography for testing in the early stages of decay, while stress wave tomography can be used effectively in the late stage of decay. It is suggested that each technique can be used in the practice of internal decay testing of standing trees based on decay stages and operating conditions.

Estimating conductive sapwood area in diffuse and ring porous trees with electronic resistance tomography

Accurately estimating sapwood area is essential for modelling whole-tree or stand-scale transpiration from point-flow sap-flux observations. In this study, we tested the validity of electrical resistance tomography (ERT) to locate the sapwood-heartwood (SW/HW) interface for two ring porous (Quercus nigra L. and Quercus virginiana Mill.) and one diffuse porous (Acer rubrum L.) species. Estimates derived from the ERT analyses were compared with the SW/HW interface measured following dye perfusion testing. The ERT results revealed spatial variation in electrical resistance, with higher resistivity in the inner part of the cross sections. Regression analyses showed that ERT was able to accurately account for 97% and 80% of the variation in sapwood area (calculated as R2) for Q. virginiana (n = 19) and Q. nigra (n = 7), respectively, and 56% of the variation in the diffuse porous species (n = 8). Root mean square error (RMSE) values for sapwood areas of the ring porous species were 11.12 cm2 (19%) and 25.98 cm2 (33%) for Q. virginiana and Q. nigra, respectively. Sapwood area estimates for diffuse wood carried greater error (RMSE = 33.52 cm2 (131%)). Model bias for all sapwood area estimates was negative, suggesting that ERT had a tendency to overestimate sapwood areas. Electrical resistance tomography proved to be a significant predictor of sapwood area in the three investigated species, although it was more reliable for ring porous wood. In addition to the results, a comprehensive code sequence for use with R statistical software is provided, so that other investigators may follow the same method.

Noninvasive Analysis of Tree Stems by Electrical Resistivity Tomography: Unraveling the Effects of Temperature, Water Status, and Electrode Installation

The increasing demand for tree and forest health monitoring due to ongoing climate change requires new future-oriented and nondestructive measurement techniques. Electrical resistivity (ER) tomography represents a promising and innovative approach, as it allows insights into living trees based on ER levels and ER cross-sectional distribution patterns of stems. However, it is poorly understood how external factors, such as temperature, tree water status, and electrode installation affect ER tomograms. In this study, ER measurements were carried out on three angiosperms (Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica, Populus nigra) and three conifers (Larix decidua, Picea abies, Pinus cembra) exposed to temperatures between -10 and 30°C and to continuous dehydration down to -6.3 MPa in a laboratory experiment. Additionally, effects of removal of peripheral tissues (periderm, phloem, cambium) and electrode installation were tested. Temperature changes above the freezing point did not affect ER distribution patterns but average ER levels, which increased exponentially and about 2.5-fold from 30 to 0°C in all species. In contrast, freezing of stems caused a pronounced raise of ER, especially in peripheral areas. With progressive tree dehydration, average ER increased in all species except in B. pendula, and measured resistivities in the peripheral stem areas of both angiosperms and conifers were clearly linearly related to the tree water status. Removal of the periderm resulted in a slight decrease of high ER peaks. Installation of electrodes for a short period of 32-72 h before conducting the tomography caused small distortions in tomograms. Distortions became serious after long-term installation for several months, while mean ER was only slightly affected. The present study confirms that ER tomography of tree stems is sensitive to temperature and water status. Results help to improve ER tomogram interpretation and suggest that ER analyses may be suitable to nondestructively determinate the hydraulic status of trees. They thus provide a solid basis for further technological developments to enable presymptomatic detection of physiological stress in standing trees.

Investigations on the Effects of Seasonal Temperature Changes on the Electrical Resistance of Living Trees

In order to use the electrical resistance method to accurately and timely detect and evaluate the internal decay defects of living trees, the effects of the seasonal temperature and moisture content on the electrical resistance of standing trees were investigated. At the Northeast Forestry University Experimental Forest Farm, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province of China, Populus simonii Populus simonii Carr. and Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. were selected as the objects and the electrical resistance of standing trees was tested through different seasons from December 2016 to December 2017. Meanwhile, the effects of changes in the seasonal temperatures (−20 to −10 °C, −10 to −5 °C, −5 to 0 °C, 0 to 5 °C, 5 to 10 °C, 10 to 15 °C, 15 to 25 °C) as well as changes in the moisture content (MC) (Populus simonii, MC ≥ 103%; Larix gmelinii, MC ≥ 77.5%) on the electrical resistance in the cross-sections of living trees were studied. The influence of temperature at different moisture contents, the moisture content at different temperatures, and their combined effects on electrical resistance were analyzed, following which a regression model was also established. The obtained results indicated that ambient temperature had a significant effect on the average value of electrical resistance in the cross-section of living trees when temperatures were below the freezing point. There was a sudden discontinuity near the freezing point, and logR (logarithm value of electrical resistance) in the cross-sections of sound trees and decayed trees changed in a similar trend with variations in the temperature. While the effect of moisture content on logR in the cross-sections of threes was insignificant at different temperatures because of the moisture content above FSP (fiber saturation point). It indicated that the temperature and moisture content had interactive effects on logR in the cross-sections. The binary linear regression model between moisture content, temperature, and logR was highly fitted with a correlation coefficient (R2) higher than 0.8. The outcome of this investigation indicates that when non-destructive testing is performed on living trees using electrical resistance at different seasonal temperatures, the measured results need to consider both the temperature and moisture content. For practical work, it is not recommended to consider testing living trees near the freezing point temperature using the electrical resistive tomography. Below the freezing point, the electrical resistance changes with temperature greatly relative to the normal temperature. Therefore, when performing the detection of electrical resistance, it is necessary to calibrate the effects of temperature
