Abstract
Cutaneous leishmaniasis incidence has been rising in the past couple of decades. Standard therapy often includes antileishmanial drugs; however, due to their low safety and toxicity threshold, alternative treatments are being investigated. The association between COVID-19 and cutaneous leishmaniasis remains unclear and exploring this connection may offer crucial insights into the pathophysiology of and treatment strategies for infected patients. In this article, we describe a case of a male patient with a history of cardiac and other comorbidities who presented with cutaneous leishmaniasis in the form of impetigo-like skin lesions after being infected with COVID-19. Due to the patient's poor cardiac profile, sodium stibogluconate was not used and an alternative therapeutic approach was employed. The patient was treated with oral terbinafine, cryotherapy on specific lesions, and a course of cephalexin. Following the course of treatment and subsequent follow-up, the patient exhibited complete resolution and healing of the lesions with scarring, and no active lesions or recurrence were observed. This case highlights the potential for alternative treatment strategies for cutaneous leishmaniasis in patients with comorbidities and emphasizes the importance of further research to better understand the link between COVID-19 and cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cutaneous leishmaniasis, caused by a parasitic infection, is considered one of the most serious skin diseases in many low- and middle-income countries. Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis (OWCL) is caused by species found in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and India. The most commonly prescribed treatments are antimonials, but other drugs have been used with varying success. As OWCL tends to heal spontaneously, it is necessary to justify the use of systemic and topical treatments. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2008. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of therapeutic interventions for the localised form of Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis. SEARCH METHODS We updated our searches of the following databases to November 2016: the Cochrane Skin Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, and LILACS. We also searched five trials registers and checked the reference lists of included studies for further references to relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs). We wrote to national programme managers, general co-ordinators, directors, clinicians, WHO-EMRO regional officers of endemic countries, pharmaceutical companies, tropical medicine centres, and authors of relevant papers for further information about relevant unpublished and ongoing trials. We undertook a separate search for adverse effects of interventions for Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis in September 2015 using MEDLINE. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials of either single or combination treatments in immunocompetent people with OWCL confirmed by smear, histology, culture, or polymerase chain reaction. The comparators were either no treatment, placebo/vehicle, and/or another active compound. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently assessed trials for inclusion and risk of bias and extracted data. We only synthesised data when we were able to identify at least two studies investigating similar treatments and reporting data amenable to pooling. We also recorded data about adverse effects from the corresponding search. MAIN RESULTS We included 89 studies (of which 40 were new to this update) in 10,583 people with OWCL. The studies included were conducted mainly in the Far or Middle East at regional hospitals, local healthcare clinics, and skin disease research centres. Women accounted for 41.5% of the participants (range: 23% to 80%). The overall mean age of participants was 25 years (range 12 to 56). Most studies lasted between two to six months, with the longest lasting two years; average duration was four months. Most studies were at unclear or high risk for most bias domains. A lack of blinding and reporting bias were present in almost 40% of studies. Two trials were at low risk of bias for all domains. Trials reported the causative species poorly.Here we provide results for the two main comparisons identified: itraconazole (200 mg for six to eight weeks) versus placebo; and paromomycin ointment (15% plus 10% urea, twice daily for 14 days) versus vehicle.In the comparison of oral itraconazole versus placebo, at 2.5 months' follow up, 85/125 participants in the itraconazole group achieved complete cure compared to 54/119 in the placebo group (RR 3.70, 95% CI 0.35 to 38.99; 3 studies; 244 participants). In one study, microbiological or histopathological cure of skin lesions only occurred in the itraconazole group after a mean follow-up of 2.5 months (RR 17.00, 95% CI 0.47 to 612.21; 20 participants). However, although the analyses favour oral itraconazole for these outcomes, we cannot be confident in the results due to the very low certainty evidence. More side effects of mild abdominal pain and nausea (RR 2.36, 95% CI 0.74 to 7.47; 3 studies; 204 participants) and mild abnormal liver function (RR 3.08, 95% CI 0.53 to 17.98; 3 studies; 84 participants) occurred in the itraconazole group (as well as reports of headaches and dizziness), compared with the placebo group, but again we rated the certainty of evidence as very low so are unsure of the results.When comparing paromomycin with vehicle, there was no difference in the number of participants who achieved complete cure (RR of 1.00, 95% CI 0.86, 1.17; 383 participants, 2 studies) and microbiological or histopathological cure of skin lesions after a mean follow-up of 2.5 months (RR 1.03, CI 0.88 to 1.20; 383 participants, 2 studies), but the paromomycin group had more skin/local reactions (such as inflammation, vesiculation, pain, redness, or itch) (RR 1.42, 95% CI 0.67 to 3.01; 4 studies; 713 participants). For all of these outcomes, the certainty of evidence was very low, meaning we are unsure about these results.Trial authors did not report the percentage of lesions cured after the end of treatment or speed of healing for either of these key comparisons. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS There was very low-certainty evidence to support the effectiveness of itraconazole and paromomycin ointment for OWCL in terms of cure (i.e. microbiological or histopathological cure and percentage of participants completely cured). Both of these interventions incited more adverse effects, which were mild in nature, than their comparisons, but we could draw no conclusions regarding safety due to the very low certainty of the evidence for this outcome.We downgraded the key outcomes in these two comparisons due to high risk of bias, inconsistency between the results, and imprecision. There is a need for large, well-designed international studies that evaluate long-term effects of current therapies and enable a reliable conclusion about treatments. Future trials should specify the species of leishmaniasis; trials on types caused by Leishmania infantum, L aethiopica, andL donovani are lacking. Research into the effects of treating women of childbearing age, children, people with comorbid conditions, and those who are immunocompromised would also be helpful.It was difficult to evaluate the overall efficacy of any of the numerous treatments due to the variable treatment regimens examined and because RCTs evaluated different Leishmania species and took place in different geographical areas. Some outcomes we looked for but did not find were degree of functional and aesthetic impairment, change in ability to detect Leishmania, quality of life, and emergence of resistance. There were only limited data on prevention of scarring.

Abstract
Renal failure was experimentally induced in 36 hamsters by intraperitoneal injection with uranyl nitrate (5 mg/kg). Twenty-four h later [during acute renal failure (ARF), as indicated by the serum concentrations of creatinine and urea nitrogen] or 72 h later [during chronic renal failure (CRF)] these hamsters plus 18, uninjected, control hamsters were each given a single, intramuscular dose of sodium stibogluconate (120 mg pentavalent antimony/kg). The pharmacokinetic parameters for the antimonial drug were calculated using a non-compartmental model. Urine was collected for 72 h after similar treatment with the antimonial drug, from another 30 hamsters (10 controls, 10 with ARF, and 10 with CRF), so that the fraction of the antimony administered that was subsequently excreted in the urine could be estimated. Compared with the controls, both the hamsters with ARF and those with CRF had significantly higher maximum concentrations of antimony (C(max)), significantly larger 'areas under the curve' for the plots of blood concentration v. time, and significantly longer plasma half-lives (P < 0.001 for each). The mean (S.D.) values of C(max), for example, were more than three-fold higher in the hamsters with ARF [467.5 (59.04) microg/ml] or CRF [461.1 (68.9) microg/ml] than in the controls [154.01 (17.3) microg/ml]. The systemic clearance of antimony was also significantly lower in the hamsters with CRF than in the control animals [0.051 (0.002) v. 0.296 (0.047) litres/h/kg; P < 0.01]. In addition, the fraction of the antimony administered that was excreted in urine was significantly lower in the animals with ARF (0.25) or CRF (0.08) than in the controls (0.37), indicating significant dysfunction of the kidneys in the hamsters injected with uranyl nitrate. It seems clear that, if severe toxicity is to be avoided, patients with renal dysfunction requiring treatment (for leishmaniasis) with sodium stibogluconate should be given lower doses than similar cases with normal kidney function.

Abstract
We have established the association between parasite burden and localized immune response in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania tropica. Real-time PCR was used to measure parasitic load in tissue lesions of CL patients at the pretreatment (n=26) and at the post-treatment stage (n=10). Leishmania tropica was detected in all CL lesions with a mean value of 118 357 parasites g(-1) of dermal tissue. Following treatment, only one out of 10 patients showed residual parasites (100 parasites g(-1) tissue). Parasite load was high (mean, 306 000 parasites g(-1) tissue) in acute infections (early lesions) and low (mean, 1081 parasites g(-1) tissue) in chronic infections (late lesions). Intralesional transcripts of interferon-gamma, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), IL-8, IL-10 and IL-4 were investigated in early lesions (<or=2 months, n=14) and late lesions (>2 months, n=15) by reverse transcriptase-PCR, where IL-4 was found to be significantly upregulated in early lesions (P<0.02). Further, the levels of parasite burden and IL-4 were distinctly correlated in various clinical forms of CL. Other cytokines were at comparable levels in early/late lesions and in different clinical forms. Upregulation of IL-4 was correlated with a higher parasite burden in early lesions of CL, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of CL by inhibiting a protective immune response.

SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register (January 2009), the Register of Controlled Clinical Trials in The Cochrane Library (Issue 1,2009), MEDLINE (2003 to January 2009), EMBASE (2005 to January 2009), LILACS (from inception to January 2009), CINAHL (1982-May 2007) and other databases. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) assessing treatments for American cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two authors independently assessed trial quality and extracted data. MAIN RESULTS We included 38 trials involving 2728 participants. Results are based on individual studies or limited pooled analyses. There was good evidence in:Leishmania braziliensis and L. panamensis infections:Intramuscular (IM) meglumine antimoniate (MA) was better than oral allopurinol for 28 days (1RCT n=127, RR 0.39; 95% CI 0.26, 0.58). Intravenous (IV)MA for 20-days was better than 3-day and 7-day IVMA plus 15% paromomycin plus 12% methylbenzethonium chloride (PR-MBCL) or 7-day IVMA (1RCT n= 150, RR 0.24; 95% CI 0.11, 0.50; RR 0.69; 95% CI 0.53, 0.90; RR 0.64; 95% CI 0.44, 0.92 respectively). Oral allopurinol plus antimonials was better than IV antimonials (2RCT n= 168, RR 1.90; 95% CI 1.40, 2.59; I(2)=0%).L. braziliensis infections:Oral pentoxifylline plus IV sodium stibogluconate (SSG) was better than IVSSG (1RCT n= 23, RR 1.66; 95% CI 1.03, 2.69); IVMA was better than IM aminosidine sulphate (1RCT n= 38, RR 0.05; 95% CI 0.00, 0.78) and better than IV pentamidine isethionate (1RCT n= 80, RR 0.45; 95% CI 0.29, 0.71). Intramuscular MA was better than Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (1RCT n= 93, RR 0.46; 95% CI 0.32, 0.65).L .panamensis infections:Oral allopurinol was better than IVMA (1RCT n= 58, RR 2.20; 95% CI 1.34, 3.60). Aminosidine sulphate at doses of 12 mg/kg/day and 18 mg/kg/day for 14 days were better than aminosidine sulphate 12 mg/kg/day for 7 days (1RCT n= 60, RR 0.23; 95% CI 0.07, 0.73; RR 0.23; 95% CI 0.07, 0.73 respectively). Oral ketoconazole for 28 days, oral miltefosine and topical PR-MBCL were better than placebo. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Most trials have been designed and reported so poorly that they are inconclusive. There is a need for large well conducted studies that evaluate long-term effects of current therapies to improve quality and standardization of methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by a parasitic infection and is considered one of the most serious skin diseases in many developing countries. Antimonials are the most commonly prescribed treatment but other drugs have been used with varying success. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of treatments for Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis (OWCL). SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register (April 2008), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library Issue 2, 2008), MEDLINE (2003-April 2008), EMBASE (2005-April 2008), CINAHL (1982-August 2007), LILACS (from inception to April 2008) and ongoing trials databases (August 2007). SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials assessing treatments in immuno-competent people with OWCL confirmed by smear, histology, culture or polymerase chain reaction. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two authors independently assessed trial quality and extracted data. MAIN RESULTS We included 49 trials involving 5559 participants. Reporting quality was generally poor and only two studies contained sufficiently similar data to pool.In Leishmania major infections, there was good RCT evidence of benefit of cure around 3 months after treatment when compared to placebo for 200 mg oral fluconazole (1 RCT n = 200, RR 2.78; 95% CI 1.86, 4.16), topical 15% paromomycin + 12% methylbenzethonium chloride (PR-MBCL) (1 RCT n = 60, RR 3.09; 95% CI 1.14, 8.37) and photodynamic therapy (1 RCT n = 60, RR 7.02; 95% CI 3.80, 17.55). Topical PR-MBCL was less efficacious than photodynamic therapy (1 RCT n = 65, RR 0.44; 95% CI 0.29, 0.66). Oral pentoxifylline was a good adjuvant therapy to intramuscular meglumine antimoniate (IMMA) when compared to IMMA plus placebo (1 RCT n = 64, RR 1.63; 95% CI 1.11, 2.39)In Leishmania tropica infections, there was good evidence of benefit for the use of 200 mg oral itraconazole for 6 weeks compared with placebo (1 RCT n = 20, RR 7.00; 95% CI 1.04, 46.95), for intralesional sodium stibogluconate (1 RCT n = 292, RR 2.62; 95% CI 1.78, 3.86), and for thermotherapy compared with intramuscular sodium stibogluconate (1 RCT n = 283, RR 2.99; 95% CI 2.04, 4.37). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Most trials have been designed and reported poorly, resulting in a lack of evidence for potentially beneficial treatments. There is a desperate need for large well conducted studies that evaluate long-term effects of current therapies. We suggest the creation of an international platform to improve quality and standardization of future trials in order to inform clinical practice.

Abstract
Cutaneous leishmaniasis is an infectious disease with increasing prevalence in Germany. Diagnosis and therapy may be difficult due to the variability of the clinical and histomorphological picture and resistance to therapy. In this case study we report on a female patient with a persistent cutaneous leishmaniasis successfully treated with topical administration of paromomycin.

Abstract
Pentavalent antimony (Sb(V)) compounds are the drugs of choice for the treatment of all forms of leishmaniasis. For 20 years there has been an interest in antifungal azoles for treating leishmaniasis, with variable success. In the current study, we examined the effects of co-administration of fluconazole (FLZ) on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of Sb(V) in cutaneous leishmaniasis-infected hamsters. Hamsters were divided into four groups. All hamsters were injected with 0.1 mL of 1x10(8)promastigotes/mL into the right foot on Day 1. Treatment was started 5 days after the infection. The antimony group received 80 mg/kg/day of Pentostam intramuscularly whilst the FLZ group received FLZ 20 mg/kg/day orally for 14 days. The combination group received both Pentostam and FLZ at the above mentioned doses for 14 days. Animals in the control group received no treatment. The infected footpads were measured on Days 1 and 14. A pharmacokinetic study was conducted on Days 1 and 14 of treatment, representing single- and multiple-dose pharmacokinetics, respectively. Blood samples were collected at different time intervals up to 24h. Sb(V) was determined using flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated using a non-compartmental analysis. In the single-dose study, there was no statistically significant difference in any of the pharmacokinetic parameters of Sb(V) when given alone or with FLZ. However, on Day 14 a significant increase in peak plasma concentration (C(max)) (three-fold) and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) (four-fold) of antimony was observed when Sb(V) was co-administered with FLZ. A statistically significant prolongation of the terminal half-life from 1.63 to 8.67 h (P<0.05) was also observed. A significant reduction in clearance was detected. However, FLZ had no effect on the pharmacodynamics of Sb(V) as measured by footpad sizes. In conclusion, FLZ did not improve the therapeutic effect of Sb(V) when given concomitantly despite the significant increase in blood concentration and prolongation of the elimination half-life of Sb(V).

Abstract
The first line drugs for the treatment of leishmaniasis are antimonial derivatives. Poor clinical response may be credited to factors linked to the host, the drug, or the parasite. We determined the sensitivity of Leishmania sp. promastigotes and amastigotes by counting parasites exposed to increasing concentrations of meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime). Leishmania braziliensis promastigotes were significantly more sensitive than those belonging to other species. The sensitivity of L. braziliensis isolates from patients with unfavorable clinical outcome, such as therapeutic failure or relapse, was significantly lower than those from patients who had clinical cure. Poor clinical response to therapy (therapeutic failure or relapse) was also associated with inadequate antimonial therapy. We also found a significant and positive correlation between promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes with regard to their in vitro susceptibilities to meglumine antimoniate. Our data provide evidence for an association between the sensitivity of promastigotes to antimonials in vitro and clinical response to therapy in American tegumentary leishmaniasis. The high sensitivity of the local L. braziliensis to meglumine antimoniate in vitro provides an explanation for the good clinical response of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, even when low-dose regimens are employed.

Abstract
CASE STUDY Weaknesses in the multistep process of admixture preparation and administration resulted in a patient with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) receiving a 10-fold intravenous (IV) overdose of Pentostam (sodium stibogluconalte), a rarely used drug. LESSONS LEARNED A review of this adverse event resulted in five recommendations: (1) Provide staffing continuity among pharmacists and pharmacy technicians preparing and nurses administering the admixture; (2) Take time to ensure thorough and deliberative consideration ofquestions or concerns about admixture preparation; (3) Use due diligence in performing double checks of admixture calculations; (4) Know the drug and seek clarification when appropriate; and (5) Examine label information carefully. PROGRESS UPDATE: Two changes were made to improve patientsafety. First, a form was developed to accompany the preparation of complex IV drugs, including chemoltherapy solutions and nonformulary IV admixtures; the form is consistently used. Second, the pharmacy service developed information sheets for 12 high-risk drugs frequently used in IV admixtures. DISCUSSION The medical center had processes in place to prevent medication errors, yet an error occurred nonetheless. Weaknesses were identified in staff communication, quality assurance checks, and product labeling. Also, nurses and pharmacists had less than adequate information about new or unusually dosed medications.

Abstract
Currently available methods for the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) have low sensitivities or are unable to quantify the number of viable parasites. This constitutes a major obstacle for the diagnosis of the disease and for the study of the effectiveness of treatment schedules and urges the development of improved detection methods. In this study, quantitative nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (QT-NASBA) technology was used to detect and quantify Leishmania parasites in skin biopsy samples from CL patients. The assay is based on the detection of a small subunit rRNA (18S rRNA), which may allow for the detection of viable parasites. The QT-NASBA assay was evaluated using in vitro-cultured promastigotes and amastigotes and 2-mm skin biopsy samples from Old and New World CL patients. The study demonstrated that the lower detection limit of the QT-NASBA was two parasites per biopsy sample. Parasites could be quantified in a range of 2 to 11,300,000 parasites per biopsy sample. The QT-NASBA could detect levels of parasites 100-fold lower than those detected by conventional PCR. Test evaluation revealed that the QT-NASBA had a sensitivity of 97.5% and a specificity of 100% in the present study. The QT-NASBA is a highly sensitive and specific method that allows quantification of both Old and New World Leishmania parasites in skin biopsy samples and may provide an important tool for diagnosis as well as for monitoring the therapy of CL patients.

Abstract
In this study, different types of tissue sampling for PCR-based diagnosis and follow-up of canine visceral leishmaniosis were compared. Skin, whole blood and lymph node samples were collected from 95 naturally infected dogs living in South Italy, where the disease is endemic. Twenty-nine of these 95 dogs, treated with meglumine administered concurrently with allopurinol for 30 days, and then with allopurinol alone, were monitored during a period of 2 years. The DNA extracted from the clinical specimens was amplified by PCR using as target DNA a 116-bp fragment in the constant region of the kinetoplast DNA minicircle. PCR analysis was more sensitive than indirect immunofluorescence antibody test in detecting Leishmania infection in symptomatic dogs: 99% of lymph node samples resulted positive, whereas 94% of blood samples and 95% of skin samples gave a positive result. PCR analysis of samples from dogs followed up 2 years showed that: (1) all subjects resulted positive in at least one of the three types of samples; (2) all time the dogs had a relapse, PCR resulted positive in all three types of samples; (3) when dogs were apparently healthy, PCR analysis was positive on skin and lymph node samples, but not always on blood samples. Since lymph node sampling is invasive and sometimes difficult in healthy asymptomatic dogs, our results suggest that, independently from the presence or not of cutaneous lesions, skin biopsy represents a good substratum for PCR-based diagnosis and follow-up of canine visceral leishmaniosis.

Abstract
Diagnosis of the cutaneous form of canine leishmaniosis is mostly performed by histological or immunohistological examination of skin biopsies. In modern histology, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has gained increasing importance as a complementary tool to directly demonstrate the presence of parasite DNA in the tissue sections. For the present study, a previously described Leishmania-PCR has been further developed and optimised in view of its practicability for routine histological application. Since formalin-fixation of histological specimens causes partial DNA-destruction, which may hamper diagnostic PCR analysis, primers specific for the highly conserved alpha-actin gene sequences were used to pre-diagnostically assess the isolated sample-DNA for its functionality in a PCR-reaction. This alpha-actin-specific PCR detects DNA from a large variety of mammalian species and thus exhibits relevance for both human and veterinary medical application. A recombinant internal positive control was introduced to monitor possible sample-related inhibitory effects during the amplification reaction. We performed a retrospective evaluative study with 18 formalin-fixed samples from dogs with suspected or proven leishmaniosis. Six samples were PCR-incompatible. In turn, 9 of the other 12 samples were PCR-positive, and immunohistochemical results matched these findings. Based on these technical achievements, the Leishmania-PCR proved to be a valuable tool to complement conventional histological and immunohistological methods for diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniosis in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded skin biopsies.

Abstract
Real-time technology eliminates many of the pitfalls of diagnostic PCR, but this method has not been applied to differentiation of Leishmania organisms so far. We have developed a real-time PCR that simultaneously detects, quantitates, and categorizes Leishmania organisms into three relevant groups causing distinct clinical pictures. The analytical sensitivity (detection rate of >or=95% at 94.1 parasites/ml of blood) was within a range that has been determined previously to facilitate the confirmation of visceral leishmaniasis from peripheral blood. Parasites were successfully detected in 12 different clinical samples (blood, bone marrow, skin, and liver). The Leishmania donovani complex, the Leishmania brasiliensis complex, and species other than these could be clearly discriminated by means of distinct melting temperatures obtained with fluorescence resonance energy transfer probes (melting points, 72.7, 67.1, and 65.0 degrees C, respectively). All three groups could be quantified within equal ranges. As in other real-time PCRs, the variability in the quantification of DNA was small (coefficient of variation [CV], <2%). However, human samples containing low levels of parasites (100 parasites per ml of blood) showed higher variation (CV, 60.89%). Therefore, despite its superior analytical performance, care must be taken when real-time PCR is utilized for therapy monitoring.

Abstract
Visceral leishmaniasis is a vector-borne systemic infection, which affects half a million people each year in many areas of the world. Typical disease manifests with fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia, and progressive deterioration of the host. Although molecular methods appear promising as a non-invasive diagnostic tool, definite diagnosis still relies on the demonstration of the parasite in tissue. Pentavalent antimonial compounds remain the mainstay of treatment worldwide, except in India. During the past decade, short courses of lipid formulations of amphotericin B were assessed and proved effective; however, their cost precludes their wide use in developing countries. Miltefosine, an oral active agent, was recently identified, and might fulfil our expectations for an effective, safe, easily administered and affordable antileishmanial treatment.
