Abstract
This study aimed to review the considerations for choosing a suitable sealer according to various endodontic scenarios. An electronic search of PubMed, Scopus, and the Web of Science was undertaken for the keywords of 'sealer choosing', 'appropriate sealer', 'suitable sealer', 'sealer for clinical scenario', and 'sealer for clinical situations'. However, the literature review revealed a lack of studies with practical clinical recommendations regarding the choice of appropriate endodontic root canal sealers for particular clinical situations of root canal treatment. Therefore, a narrative review was undertaken under the basis of the characteristics of an epoxy resin-based sealer (ERS) versus a calcium silicate-based sealer (CSS). Based on the evidence found through the review, the choice of an appropriate sealer in a variety of clinical scenarios was proposed. An ERS is recommended for one-visit non-vital cases, teeth with periodontal involvement, cracked teeth, and internal root resorption without root perforation. A CSS is recommended for vital or non-vital cases in multiple visits, teeth with internal root resorption with perforation or internal approach for external cervical resorption, teeth with open apices, and teeth with iatrogenic aberrations.

Abstract
Background: Endodontic treatment objectives comprise eliminating or decreasing bacterial load inside the complex endodontic space. Removing the smear layer and debris becomes mandatory to achieve good three-dimensional (3D) cleaning. Aim: This study assesses the difference in smear layer removal using the 3D cleaning technique and traditional syringe needle irrigation. The 3D cleaning technique includes the ultrasonic activation of intracanal-heated NaOCl. Materials and Methods: Our current study used single-rooted human mandibular premolar teeth to test the earlier-mentioned technique (n = 30). Initially, an endodontic access cavity was performed. Consequently, specimens were randomly distributed into three study groups according to irrigation protocol. The groups were Group 1, where the traditional syringe needle irrigation system was applied; Group 2, where the 3D cleaning technique was performed; and Group 3, in which teeth remained uncleaned as it was regarded as the control group. Once the experiment was completed, the teeth were decoronated at the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Debris and smear layers were viewed in 1000× magnification and scored. Results: Statistical analysis was performed with a standard statistical software package (SPSS, version 28.0; SPSS IBM, Armonk, NY, USA). Data were analyzed with a nonparametric analysis of variance (Kruskal−Wallis ANOVA) among the groups tested and among the thirds of the canals. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. A statistically significant (p < 0.05) lower mean smear layer and debris score was observed in both study groups compared to the control group. Group 2 showed better results compared to Group 1. Conclusions: The present study concluded that the 3D cleaning technique is an effective irrigation method for removing debris and smear layers. Future research, such as CLSM (Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy) and Histological study, should be employed to confirm this study’s conclusion.

Abstract
Aim: This study was designed to investigate the effect of different final irrigation protocols on the apical sealing ability of bioceramic and epoxy resin-based sealers.
Materials and methods: Thirty human single-rooted mandibular premolars were instrumented using ProTaper Next rotary files. Teeth were randomly divided into three groups according to the final irrigation regimen; Group I: 5 ml 0.2% CNPs/3 min, Group II: 2.5 ml 0.2% CNPs/1.5 min followed by 2.5 ml 17% EDTA/1.5 min, and Group III: 5 ml 17% EDTA/3min. All groups were subdivided into two subgroups based on the obturation material; Subgroup A: gutta-percha/Sure-Seal Root BC Sealer and Subgroup B: gutta-percha/AH Plus. All canals were obturated using single cone obturation technique. The apical sealing ability was assessed using modified silver staining technique with ammoniacal silver nitrate tracer solution. Samples were sectioned longitudinally and examined using scanning electron microscope.
Results: Sure-Seal Root BC sealer showed significantly lower nanoleakage compared to AH Plus (p < 0.001). No significant difference was recorded in the nanoleakage of Sure-Seal Root BC sealer among the three groups (p = 0.284), while AH Plus showed a significantly higher nanoleakage in the EDTA group (p = 0.002). The depth of silver nitrate penetration into the dentinal tubules was significantly higher in AH Plus subgroup with the three different irrigation protocols (p < 0.001). For both sealers, the highest penetration depth for silver nitrate tracer solution was recorded in the EDTA group (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: The apical sealing ability of bioceramic sealers is better than that of epoxy resin-based sealers. The type of the final irrigating solution seems to affect the post-obturation seal of both AH Plus and Sure-Seal Root BC sealer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasonic activation (US) over glycolic acid on microhardness, cohesive strength, flexural strength, and fracture resistance of root dentin, comparing with conventional final irrigation protocols. METHODS Samples were obtained from 140 extracted bovine teeth and distributed into four test groups: microhardness (50 teeth), cohesive strength (15 teeth), flexural strength (15 teeth), and fracture resistance (60 teeth). In all four tests, specimens were subdivided into five groups, according to final irrigation protocols: G1: distilled water (DW); G2: 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA); G3: 17% glycolic acid (GA); G4: 17% EDTA + US; and G5: 17% GA + US. The duration time of each protocol was set in 1 min. After irrigation protocols, the Vickers tester was used to evaluate microhardness and the universal testing machine was used to evaluate the cohesive strength, flexural strength, and fracture resistance of the root dentin. One-way ANOVA test and the Tukey HSD were used for multiple comparison tests in all evaluations (α = 5%). RESULTS In general, groups 2 (EDTA), 4 (EDTA + US), and 5 (GA + US) promoted the highest reduction of microhardness, being statistically different from other groups (p < 0.05). Cohesive strength, flexural strength, and fracture resistance data revealed that no differences between groups were observed (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The association of GA and US results in microhardness reduction, with no influence on cohesive strength, flexural strength, and fracture resistance of the root dentin. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of US over GA has no influence on some mechanical properties of root dentin.

Abstract
The success of endodontic treatment relies on both apical and coronal sealing. To achieve a good three-dimensional seal, the removal of the smear layer becomes mandatory. This study aims to assess the difference in debris accumulation and smear layer formation while using automated root canal irrigation and conventional syringe needle irrigation. Single-rooted human mandibular premolar teeth (n = 30) which were indicated for orthodontic extractions were selected. An endodontic access cavity was prepared, and a glide path was created. Based on the irrigation protocol decided upon for the study, the teeth were randomly allocated into three study groups, namely Group 1, where the manual syringe needle irrigation method was adopted; Group 2, in which automated root canal irrigation was undertaken; and Group 3, in which teeth remained un-instrumented as it was considered the Control group. The teeth were decoronated at the cement-enamel junction (CEJ) and were subjected for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination. Debris and smear layers were viewed in 1000× magnification and scored. A statistically significant (p < 0.05) lower mean debris and smear layer score (p < 0.05) was observed in both study groups when compared with the control group. However, no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the debris and smear layer was observed between the manual syringe needle irrigation and automated irrigation, although automated irrigation devices can be a potential alternative. The present study concluded that the efficacy of smear layer removal remained the same with both automated irrigation and manual syringe irrigation.

Influence of 17% EDTA and Sapindus mukorossi on the Surface Property of Protaper Gold Rotary Endodontic Instruments. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ethanolic extract of Sapindus mukorossi (S. mukorossi) in combination with canal shaping on surface properties of ProTaper Gold rotary endodontic file. Sixteen F1 ProTaper Gold rotary files underwent the standard protocol for root canal treatment using two irrigants (S. mukorossi and 17% EDTA) in single-rooted decoronated teeth. Eight unused files were used as a control. All files were examined under an atomic force microscope (AFM) to evaluate surface roughness (Ra) and root mean square (RMS). Data were analyzed using the t-test. RMS and Ra values of the control file were 1.37 and 0.607, respectively. The mean RMS (3.70 ± 1.41) and mean Ra (2.89 ± 1.41) in EDTA group were significantly higher than the control file (p < 0.05). The mean RMS in the S. mukorossi group (1.77 ± 0.66) did not show any significant difference with the control (p > 0.05). The Ra of S. mukorossi group (1.09 ± 0.05) was significantly higher than the control file (p < 0.05). Moreover, the mean RMS and Ra were found to be significantly higher in the EDTA group compared to the S. mukorossi group (p < 0.05). The mean Ra and RMS values of the ProTaper Gold files used to prepare canals using 17% EDTA and S. mukorossi irrigation were significantly higher than the control files. The EDTA-treated ProTaper Gold rotary files demonstrated higher surface Ra and RMS than the S. mukorossi files.

Abstract
AIM: This study compared the removal of the smear layer using 1% phytic acid or 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) after root canal instrumentation with SmartTrack X3, Endo*star E, and ProTaper Gold rotary systems using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM).
METHODS: Sixty single-rooted unidentified extracted human maxillary anterior teeth were selected. The length of all the roots used was adjusted to 16 mm from the apex. Modified access cavities were done. Roots were equally and randomly allocated to three main groups (n = 20) corresponding to the rotary systems: group A1, SmartTrack X3; group A2, Endo*star E3; and group A3, ProTaper Gold. Each group was divided into two equal subgroups (n = 10), corresponding to the chelating agents applied as a final rinse: subgroup B1, 1% phytic acid, and subgroup B2, 17% EDTA. Roots were split in a buccolingual direction into two equal halves and examined under ESEM in the presence or absence of a smear layer at the cervical, middle, and apical segments.
RESULTS: 1% Phytic acid and 17% EDTA recorded no statistically significant for removing the smear layer. For all subgroups, there was a significant difference in smear layer removal and more open dentinal tubules in the cervical segment versus the apical segment.
CONCLUSION: In smear layer removal from root canals, 1% phytic acid was effective as 17% EDTA in smear layer removal form root canals after SmartTrack X3, Endo*star E3, or ProTaper Gold rotary systems instrumentation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of glycolic acid (GA) and EDTA on dentin mechanical properties. For the cohesive strength, flexural strength and fracture strength tests, the hourglass of root dentin, dentin sticks and roots standardised to 1 mm thickness were used respectively. ANOVA and Tukey tests were used for statistical analysis (P < 0.05). The results showed that EDTA and GA 17% reduced the cohesive strength values when compared to distilled water (control; P = 0.0022 and P = 0.0016 respectively), whereas the values for GA 10% group were similar to those of the control group (P = 0.093). No statistically significant difference was found among the groups for the flexural strength test (P = 0.1974). Fracture strength test showed that EDTA and GA 17% were statistically similar to each other (P = 0.7694) and statistically inferior to GA 10% (P = 0.0007 and P = 0.0004 respectively). It was concluded that 10% GA showed fewer negative effects on dentin mechanical properties.

BACKGROUND Irrigants were required to eliminate the microbes and debris from the intraradicular space and must have direct contact with the entire root canal wall. Therefore, different irrigation methods have been proposed to deliver the irrigant as close as possible to the remote areas of the root canal. AIM The aim of the present study is to evaluate the cleaning efficacy of single-beveled needle, side-vented needle, endovac, and endo-irrigator plus in the removal of debris from apical third of root canal by Scanning Electron Microscope. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty single-rooted freshly extracted human permanent mandibular premolars were collected. Root canals were cleaned and instrumented till X2 (25/06) with rotary Protaper Next at working length 1 mm short of the apex. Teeth were randomly divided into four equal groups: Group 1 (n = 10): Endovac, Group 2 (n = 10): Endo irrigator plus, Group 3 (n = 10): Side-vented needle, and Group 4 (n = 10): Single-beveled needle. Irrigation was done with 5.25% NaOCl, followed by 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Samples were sectioned and examined under SEM at apical levels. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Analysis of variance followed by Tukey's post hoc test was performed. RESULTS The level of debris removal efficacy is as follows: Endovac > Endo-irrigator plus > Side-vented needle ~ Single-beveled needle. CONCLUSION Endovac showed the maximum number of debris removal and has better cleaning efficacy in the apical areas of the root canal, followed by Endo irrigator plus, Side-vented needle and Single-beveled needle.

Push-Out Bond Strength and SEM Evaluation in Roots Filled with Two Different Techniques Using New and Conventional Sealers. MATERIALS 2018; 11:ma11091620. Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of calcium-silicate-based sealer (Endosequence-BC-Sealer) in roots, filled with thermo-plasticized injectable technique aided by Calamus-Flow-Delivery-System, on bond strength to radicular dentin, in comparison with conventional epoxy-resin-based sealer (AH-Plus) along with cold-lateral-compaction technique. Root canals of mandibular-premolar teeth (n = 80) were instrumented using Protaper Universal rotary files and were randomly divided into four experimental groups (n = 20) as follows: (1) AH-Plus + cold-lateral-compaction technique; (2) Endosequence-BC-Sealer + cold-lateral-compaction technique; (3) AH-Plus + thermo-plasticized injectable technique; and (4) Endosequence-BC-Sealer + thermo-plasticized injectable technique. Horizontal disc shaped samples from each group (n = 60/group) were obtained and push-out bond strength testing was performed at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were analyzed statistically using nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis analysis and Mann-Whitney test (p < 0.001). The statistical analysis revealed a significant difference amongst the groups (p < 0.001). The highest bond strength values were found in group 1 compared with all the other experimental groups (p < 0.001), whereas the lowest bond strength values were found in group 4 (p < 0.001). It was concluded that thermo-plasticized injectable technique with Calamus-Flow-Delivery-System lowered the bond strengths of the sealers, especially Endosequence-BC-Sealer. Therefore, this technique is not recommended to calcium-silicate-based sealers. Further studies are needed to confirm the findings of this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of maleic acid (MA) on the cleaning efficacy and mechanical properties of root canal dentine with respect to different time exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and eighty single-canal premolars were instrumented with rotary-files and then randomly assigned to test groups receiving 7% MA for 30 s, 45 s, 1 min, or 3 min or to control groups treated with 0.9% saline or 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid for 45 s. The micro-hardness, nano-hardness and elastic modules were measured before and after treatment, while the amount of smear and erosion in the coronal, middle and apical thirds in root canal were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, finally, the fracture strength was assessed by vertical root fracture testing. RESULTS The efficacy of smear layer removal increased with increasing MA application time. The largest effect was observed at 45 s, even in the apical third, whereas the treatment for 1 min resulted in irreversible erosion of the dentine surface. The micro-hardness and nano-indentation testing confirmed that the micro- and nano-scale mechanical properties were significantly decreased after MA application for 1 min. Furthermore, the specimens treated with MA for 3 min presented the lowest fracture resistance among all groups. In contrast, the 45 s treatment appeared to increase the fracture resistance of the tooth. CONCLUSIONS The cleaning efficacy and mechanical properties of root canal dentine varied with MA exposure time. The application of MA for 45 s was found to be the most promising for clinical use.

Abstract
We compared the apical seals of two new calcium silicate-based sealers (iRoot SP and MTA Fillapex) in the presence and absence of a smear layer. Eighty-two human premolars were prepared and randomly divided into four groups. In groups 1 and 3, the smear layer was retained. In groups 2 and 4, the root canals were irrigated with EDTA to remove the smear layer. Canals were filled using gutta-percha/iRoot SP (in groups 1 and 2) or obturated with gutta-percha/MTA Fillapex (in groups 3 and 4). Fluid filtration was used to evaluate apical microleakage. The presence of the smear layer had no significant effect on the sealing properties of the filling materials, except for iRoot SP at 2 weeks (P = 0.007). There was significantly less microleakage with iRoot SP than with MTA Fillapex (P = 0.025 at 2 weeks; P < 0.001 at 3 months). Leakage decreased significantly over time in all specimens, except in group 2 (P = 0.473). In conclusion, removal of the smear layer had no adverse effect on the sealing properties of calcium silicate-based sealers. In addition, the sealing ability of iRoot SP was superior to that of MTA Fillapex.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of MTAD (a mixture of tetracycline isomer, an acid, and a detergent) and conventional irrigation agents on the apical leakage and push-out bond strength of root canal filling and to correlate the apical leakage and push-out bond strength. Root canals of 120 maxillary central incisors were prepared with a ProTaper file up to F3 and distributed to six groups. Saline, 1% NaOCl, 17% EDTA, 17% EDTA/1% NaOCl, and 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) solutions were used between each file change, and 5 mL of the same irrigating solution was used for the final flush. In the MTAD group, the root canals were irrigated with 1.3% NaOCl between each file and 5 mL of MTAD for the final flush. All the root canals were filled with AH Plus sealer and gutta-percha cones. Apical leakage was evaluated using a fluid transport system. After the apical leakage test, each tooth was prepared for the push-out assessment. The statistical analysis revealed that the irrigation solutions had no effect on the apical leakage of the root canal fillings (p = 0.258). The root fillings of the groups irrigated with MTAD showed significantly lower push-out bond strength values than the other groups (p < 0.001). These commonly used irrigating solutions did not affect the apical leakage of the root canal sealer. MTAD reduced the bond strength of the root canal sealer to the root canal dentin.

Abstract
Mechanical instrumentation of root canals produces a smear layer that adversely affects the root canal seal. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy of MTAD and citric acid solutions used with self-adjusting file (SAF) system on smear layer. Twenty-three single-rooted human teeth were used for the study. Canals were instrumented manually up to a number 20 K file size. SAF was used to prepare the root canals. The following groups were studied: Group 1: MTAD + 5.25% NaOCl, Group 2: 20% citric acid + 5.25% NaOCl, and Group 3: Control (5.25% NaOCl). All roots were split longitudinally and subjected to scanning electron microscopy. The presence of smear layer in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds was evaluated using a five-score evaluation system. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for statistical analysis. In the coronal third, Group 2 exhibited the best results and was statistically different froms the other groups (P < 0.05). There was not a significant difference among the three thirds of groups according to in-group comparisons (P > 0.05). The solutions used in Group 1 and 2 could effectively remove smear layer in most of the specimens. However, citric acid was more effective than MTAD in the three thirds of the canal.

Abstract
This study evaluated the root canal seal achieved by irradiation with an erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet laser, and the optimal output power to remove debris and the smear layer were determined. One hundred mandibular premolar teeth were prepared and divided into four groups. Group 1 was not lased but was irrigated with 5 mL of 5.25% NaOCl and 5 mL of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Group 2 was irradiated at a panel setting of 1 W, group 3 at 2 W and group 4 at 2.5 W, with a 50% water level and 48% air-cooling level. Root canals were obturated by cold lateral compaction, and apical microleakage was measured using a fluid filtration model. The remaining debris and smear layer were evaluated via scanning electron microscopy. Statistically significant differences were detected between groups. Irradiation at 1 and 2 W using an erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet laser produced a seal superior to that of the other treatments.

Abstract
A new strategy to improve silicon-based endodontic treatment tightness by dentine hydrophobization is presented in this work: root dentine was silanized to obtain a hydrophobic dentine-sealer interface that limits fluid penetration. This strategy was based on the grafting of aliphatic carbon chains on the dentine through a silanization with the silane end groups [octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and octadecyltriethoxysilane]. Dentine surface was previously pretreated, applying ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and sodium hypochlorite, to expose hydroxyl groups of collagen for the silane grafting. Collagen fibers exposure after pretreatment was visible with scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed their correct exposition for the silanization (amide I and II, with 1630, 1580, and 1538 cm⁻¹ peaks corresponding to the vibration of C=O and C--N bonds). The grafting of aliphatic carbon chains was confirmed by FTIR (peaks at 2952 and 2923 cm⁻¹ corresponding to the stretching of C--H bonds) and by the increasing of the water contact angle. The most efficient hydrophobization was obtained with OTS in ethyl acetate, with a water contact angle turning from 51° to 109°. Gas and liquid permeability tests showed an increased seal tightness after silanization: the mean gas and water flows dropped from 2.02 × 10⁻⁸ to 1.62 × 10⁻⁸ mol s⁻¹ and from 10.8 × 10⁻³ to 5.4 × 10⁻³ µL min⁻¹, respectively. These results show clear evidences to turn hydrophilic dentine surface into a hydrophobic surface that may improve endodontic sealing.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the apical seal obtained with four root canal sealers AH 26, Sealapex, Endoflas FS and AH Plus, with lateral condensation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty root canals were prepared using the step-back technique. The specimens were divided into four experimental groups of 12 teeth and two control groups of 12 teeth. The experimental groups were obturated by laterally condensed gutta-percha with one of the tested sealers and control groups were obturated without any sealer. Methylene blue dye penetration with centrifuging method was used to evaluate the apical sealing ability. The quantitative apical leakage of each specimen was measured after 2 weeks. RESULTS The results showed no significant differences between all groups except between AH Plus and Endoflas FS (<0.05). AH Plus showed significantly less leakage than Endoflas FS. CONCLUSION AH Plus showed the least leakage compared to AH 26, Sealapex and Endoflas FS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of three different irrigating solutions (17% EDTA, 10% citric acid and 2.5% NaOCl) and KTP laser irradiation on apical leakage using an electrochemical method. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty extracted single-rooted human teeth with mature apices were instrumented up to a size 35 K-file. After using each file and before proceeding to the next, canals were irrigated with 2 ml of 2.5% NaOCl. All teeth were then randomly divided into four groups. In group 1, the root canals were irrigated with a final flush of 17% EDTA. In group 2, the root canals were irrigated with a final flush of 10% citric acid. In group 3, the root canals were irradiated with KTP laser at 1 W, 4.45 J/cm(2). In group 4, the root canals were irrigated with a final flush of 2.5% NaOCl. The root canals were then filled using the cold lateral condensation method. Apical leakage was evaluated using an electrochemical method over a period of 10 days. Data were analysed using Tukey HSD and Friedmann tests with p = 0.05 as the level for statistical significance. RESULTS The 17% EDTA and 10% citric acid groups had statistically less apical leakage than the 2.5% NaOCl group at days 7, 8, 9 and 10 (p < 0.05); however, no significant differences were found between the tested groups at the other time intervals (p > 0.05). No significant difference was found between the KTP laser group and other groups tested at all time intervals (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION All groups were unable to eliminate apical leakage. However, final irrigation with 17% EDTA and 10% citric acid following root canal preparation reduced postobturation apical leakage compared with 2.5% NaOCl irrigation. When KTP laser and the other three irrigants were compared, no significant difference was found.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of lateral compaction and tapered single cone gutta-percha techniques in root canals prepared with stainless steel and rotary nickel titanium root canal instruments by fluid filtration method.
Study design: The root canals were prepared with stainless steel (SS) and nickel titanium (NiTi) instruments. The canals prepared with SS were obturated with lateral compaction technique using .02 tapered cones and the canals prepared with NiTi instruments were obturated with lateral compaction technique using .02 tapered cones or 06 tapered single cones. The amount of leakage was evaluated by fluid filtration model. The results were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA.
Results: The group prepared with NiTi instruments and filled with lateral compaction technique showed significantly less coronal leakage than the group prepared with SS instruments and filled with lateral compaction technique (p<0.05). There was no statistically difference between apical leakages of groups (p>0.05).
Conclusions: Obturation with lateral compaction of gutta-percha provides a superior coronal seal whilst canal instrumentation with engine-driven NiTi files reduces the extent of microleakage in root canals when compared with stainless steel hand instruments. Tapered single cone technique was comparable with lateral compaction technique because of easier application.

Abstract
AIM This study comparatively evaluated the efficacy of Endovac irrigation system with conventional needle irrigation in removing smear layer from the root canal. STUDY DESIGN Thirty permanent maxillary central incisors were divided into 3 groups of 10 teeth each. In group I, the teeth were instrumented and irrigated by conventional irrigation using 27-gauge irrigation needle. In group II, irrigation was done using Endovac irrigation system. In group III (negative control) chemomechanical preparation was performed using saline solution. Scanning electron microscope evaluation was done for assessment of smear layer removal in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds. RESULTS Data were analyzed using post hoc test and Kruskal-Wallis test for significance at P < .05. Statistically significant difference was seen between the 2 test groups in smear layer removal from the apical third (3 mm) of the root canal, although no significant difference was seen in the coronal and middle thirds. The most efficient smear layer removal was seen in group II (Endovac) compared with other groups (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS The study showed significantly better removal of smear layer from the apical third of root canal using Endovac compared with conventional needle irrigation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the bond strength of a new bioceramic sealer (EndoSequence BC Sealer) and AH Plus in the presence or absence of smear layer. Extracted single-rooted human teeth were prepared and randomly divided into four groups. In groups 1 and 3, the root canals were finally irrigated with 5.25% NaOCl and smear layer was not removed, but in groups 2 and 4, the root canals were finally irrigated with 17% EDTA followed by 5.25% NaOCl in order to remove the smear layer. In groups 1 and 2, the root canals were obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus, but in groups 3 and 4, obturation was performed with gutta-percha/EndoSequence BC Sealer. Push-out bond strength and failure modes were evaluated. The bond strength of gutta-percha/AH Plus and gutta-percha/EndoSequence BC Sealer was not significantly different (P = 0.89). The presence or absence of smear layer did not significantly affect the bond strength of filling materials (P = 0.69). The mode of bond failure was mainly cohesive for all groups. In conclusion, the bond strength of the new bioceramic sealer was equal to that of AH Plus with or without the smear layer.

Abstract
The relationship between sealer penetration and apical microleakage following the use of MTAD as an irrigant in root canal procedures was evaluated. A collection of 120 human teeth was divided into three groups of 40 in each group. The final rinse was varied as follows: group 1 - the final rinse was saline solution, group 2 - ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and for group 3 - MTAD. Each group was then divided into two subgroups (20 teeth) and filled with gutta percha and either AH Plus or Dorifill sealer. Half of the teeth were selected for dye penetration testing and the sealer penetration in the remaining teeth was evaluated using scanning electron microscope. There were no significant differences between the three irrigants, but there was less dye penetration in teeth sealed with AH Plus than Dorifill. Penetration of the sealer was better in the MTAD and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid groups than in the saline group. Statistically, there was no significant difference between the sealer penetration into the dentinal tubules and the dye penetration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the leakage of root canal fillings of gutta-percha or Resilon cones in association with AH Plus or Epiphany sealer. STUDY DESIGN Four groups of premolars (n = 64) were instrumented to size 45/.04 ProFile and filled with laterally compacted gutta-percha cones or Resilon cones in association with AH Plus or Epiphany sealer. The specimens were stored for 2 weeks at 37 degrees C and 100% humidity. After that, leakage was measured using the fluid filtration method and determined as microL/min.10 psi. RESULTS Homogeneity of variance and multiple comparisons tests were performed and indicated that root fillings with the combination of gutta-percha cones and AH Plus sealer showed lower leakage values (P < .05) than the other groups. CONCLUSION Considering the experimental conditions and the results obtained, it was concluded that fillings made with gutta-percha cones in combination with AH Plus sealer had the best performance.

Abstract
Aims: a) To evaluate the bond strength of eugenol- and non-eugenol-based endodontic sealers to gutta-percha and dentin and b) To make a comparative evaluation of the bond strength of sealers to gutta-percha and dentin. Material and Methods: Seventy-two specimens were used in this study, which was divided into two groups — group I consisting of 36 freshly extracted human molars with 2 mm coronal cut surface; and group II consisting of gutta-percha disks of 10 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness embedded in 36 plaster of Paris specimens. Group I was further divided into three subgroups: subgroup 1, subgroup 2, and subgroup 3, consisting of 12 teeth each; and group II was further divided into three subgroups: subgroup 1, subgroup 2, and subgroup 3, consisting of 12 plaster specimens each. Each subgroup consisted of two materials each, which were placed in 5 mm long sections of polyethylene tubing and were then placed on coronal 2 mm cut surface of human molars; likewise subgroup 1, subgroup 2, and subgroup 3 of group II consisted of two materials each, which were also placed in 5 mm long sections of polyethylene tubing and then placed on gutta-percha disks 10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness, which were embedded in the plaster specimens. After the materials were set, the specimens were subjected to test for shearing bond strength using a universal testing machine (Instron). Statistical Analysis: Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Group I, i.e., zinc oxide eugenol sealers, showed more bond to gutta-percha than to dentin, in which subgroup 2b, endomethasone, showed the maximum bond. Group II, i.e., non-zinc oxide eugenol sealers, showed more bond to dentin than to gutta-percha, where the maximum bond was shown by subgroup 3b, EndoRez. Conclusion: Under the circumstances of this in vitro study, all the six endodontic sealers had significant differences in terms of shear bond strength to gutta-percha and dentin.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the apical leakage of roots obturated with gutta-percha using either an epoxy resin sealer (AH26) or a dual cure dentin binding agent (Excite DSC) as sealer in the presence or absence of smear layer with fluid filtration method. The canals of eighty-six, single-rooted premolars were instrumented until a #40 K-file fit at working length and then randomly divided into four groups (n = 20) with the remaining six used as controls. Groups 1 and 2 were filled with gutta-percha using AH26 as sealer; groups 3 and 4 were filled with gutta-percha and Excite DSC as sealer. Groups 1 and 3 were smear layer-positive, while group 2 and 4 were designated as smear layer-negative. After 3 days and 3 months, the samples were connected to a fluid filtration system. Analysis of data with the paired t-test showed that microleakage in AH26 groups (with and without smear layer) decreased significantly at 3 months compared to 3 days; however, in the DBA groups, the amount of microleakage at 3 days and 3 months was not significantly different. According to the results of this study, DBA (Excite DSC) had better apical sealing ability and could be applied clinically.

Abstract
Root canal instrumentation produces a layer of organic and inorganic material called the smear layer that may also contain bacteria and their by-products. It can prevent the penetration of intracanal medicaments into dentinal tubules and influence the adaptation of filling materials to canal walls. This article provides an overview of the smear layer, focusing on its relevance to endodontics. The PubMed database was used initially; the reference list for smear layer featured 1277 articles, and for both smear layer dentine and smear layer root canal revealed 1455 publications. Smear layer endodontics disclosed 408 papers. A forward search was undertaken on selected articles and using some author names. Potentially relevant material was also sought in contemporary endodontic texts, whilst older books revealed historic information and primary research not found electronically, such that this paper does not represent a 'classical' review. Data obtained suggests that smear layer removal should enhance canal disinfection. Current methods of smear removal include chemical, ultrasonic and laser techniques - none of which are totally effective throughout the length of all canals or are universally accepted. If smear is to be removed, the method of choice seems to be the alternate use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and sodium hypochlorite solutions. Conflict remains regarding the removal of the smear layer before filling root canals, with investigations required to determine the role of the smear layer in the outcomes of root canal treatment.

Abstract
Objectives: to compare the apical sealing ability of four root canal sealers. Materials and methods: forty extracted human maxillary canines were instrumented 1 mm short of the anatomical apex and randomly assigned to four groups (n=10), according to the root canal sealer used for obturation: Endofill, AH Plus, EndoREZ and Epiphany. Root canals were obturated with guttapercha points, except for the Epiphany group, in which resin points (Resilon) were used. The teeth were immersed in India ink for seven days and clarified using methyl salicylate. The extent of apical dye penetration was measured with a measuroscope in all aspects of the canal. Results: AH Plus (0.02 mm ± 0.07), Epiphany (0.00 mm ± 0.00) and EndoREZ (0.32 mm ± 0.62) did not differ statistically to each other (p>0.01). EndoFill presented the highest dye penetration mean (0.83 mm ± 0.73) and was statistically different from the other sealers (p<0.01). Conclusions: the resin-based root canal sealers presented lesser apical microleakage than the zinc oxide and eugenol based sealer. No statistical differences were observed among resin based sealers.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the sealing ability of different tapered gutta percha cones that were used with lateral compaction and single cones in canals prepared with various root canal instruments. One hundred extracted maxillary incisor roots were used. In group 1, 30 roots were prepared with stainless steel instruments (SS) and then filled by the lateral compaction technique using .02 tapered master cones. In group 2, 30 roots were prepared with ProFile nickel titanium instruments (NiTi) and filled in the same way as group 1. In group 3, 30 roots were filled by the single cone technique using 0.06 tapered gutta-percha cones. The remaining 10 teeth were taken as two control groups. Apical and coronal leakage was evaluated using the fluid filtration model. Considering the effects of the instrumentation, no statistically significant differences were found between the groups prepared with SS and NiTi (P > 0.05). When the effects of obturation technique were taken into consideration, the ProFile instruments and lateral compaction resulted in significantly less coronal leakage than the SS instruments and lateral compaction (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in apical leakage among any of the groups (P > 0.05).

Abstract
AIM To study the effect of the smear layer on the penetration of bacteria along different root canal filling materials and to examine the dentine/sealer and sealer/core material interfaces for the presence of bacteria. METHODOLOGY A total of 110 human root segments were instrumented to size 80 under irrigation with 1% sodium hypochlorite. Half of the roots were irrigated with a 5-mL rinse of 17% EDTA. Roots with and without smear layer were filled with gutta-percha (GP) and AH Plus sealer (AH), GP and Apexit sealer (AP), or RealSeal cones and sealer (RS). Following storage in humid conditions at 37 degrees C for 7 days, the specimens were mounted into a bacterial leakage test model for 135 days. Survival analyses were performed to calculate the median time of leakage and log-rank test was used for pairwise comparisons of groups. The level of significance was set at P = 0.05. Selected specimens were longitudinally sectioned and inspected by scanning electron microscopy for the presence of bacteria at the interfaces. RESULTS In the presence of the smear layer, RS and AP leaked significantly more slowly than in its absence. In the absence of the smear layer, AH leaked significantly more slowly than RS. SEM results indicated a differential pattern of bacterial penetration among the sealers. CONCLUSIONS Removal of the smear layer did not impair bacterial penetration along root canal fillings. A comparison of the sealers revealed no difference except that AH performed better than RS in the absence of the smear layer.

Abstract
Coronal leakage is an important factor affecting the outcome of endodontic therapy. This study evaluated the microbial leakage (ML) and the apical inflammatory response (AIR) in dog’s teeth after root canal filling with three endodontic sealers, post preparation and exposure to the oral environment, testing the hypothesis that there is a positive correlation between these two histological parameters (ML and AIR). Sixty-four root canals of 8 mongrel dogs were cleaned, shaped and randomly distributed into groups according to the sealer to be used: Sealer 26 (n=18); AH Plus (n=18); RoekoSeal (n=19); no sealer – control group (n=9). Root canals were filled by the lateral condensation technique. Post space preparation left 4 mm of filling material in the apical root third, and specimens were exposed to the oral environment for 90 days. The dogs were killed and jaw blocks were histologically processed using Brown & Brenn and HE staining techniques. ML and AIR were scored from 1 to 4. Results were analyzed statistically using ANOVA, Duncan’s post-hoc test and Spearman’s correlation. ML and AIR score means were: Sealer 26 - 2.44±0.98 and 2.50±0.70; AH Plus - 2.50±0.78 and 2.22±0.54; RoekoSeal - 1.84±0.95 and 2.63±0.83; Control - 2.56±1.23 and 3.11±0.60. Statistically significant differences in AIR scores were found between the AH Plus and control groups (p<0.05). Although RoekoSeal had the lowest ML means, and AH Plus, the lowest AIR means after 90-day exposure to the oral environment, no statistically significant differences were found between the three sealers under study, and no correlation was found between ML and AIR.

Abstract
AIM To compare systematically the sealing ability provided by four endodontic cements: AH Plus, Pulp Canal Sealer EWT, RoekoSeal and GuttaFlow. METHODOLOGY A sample of 100 human mandibular incisors with oval-shaped canals was selected from an initial sampling of two hundred teeth. The root canals in 80 teeth were prepared and filled by the same operator using the cold lateral compaction technique with one of the following four cements (n = 20): G1: AH Plus; G2: Pulp Canal Sealer EWT; G3: RoekoSeal and G4: GuttaFlow. Ten teeth with intact crowns served as negative controls and 10 teeth that were not root filled served as positive controls. All teeth were mounted in a two chamber apparatus and then exposed to human saliva. The number of days over a 9-weeks-period was recorded for the appearance of turbidity in the BHI broth. A Log-rank test was used to analyse the leakage data. RESULTS Overall, 30% of the samples of the AH Plus group (G1) and 35% of the Pulp Canal Sealer EWT group (G2) were fully contaminated after 9 weeks, whereas 15% of RoekoSeal (G3) and GuttaFlow (G4) groups were fully contaminated. There was a significant difference between (G1/G2) and (G3/G4) (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between G1 and G2 or between G3 and G4 (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The silicone-based sealers revealed the best results throughout the experimental period. Leakage patterns of AH plus and Pulp Canal Sealer were statistically similar.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to measure leakage of 4 resin-based sealers. STUDY DESIGN Four groups of premolars (n = 60) were prepared using GT Rotary files and the crown-down technique and filled by the single-cone technique with AH26, AHPlus, EndoREZ, and an experimental MBP as sealer. Leakage was measured using the fluid filtration method after 15, 30, and 60 days and determined as microL/min(-1) x 10 psi. RESULTS Statistical analysis by ANOVA and Tukey HSD test indicated that root fillings with AH Plus and the MBP showed lower leakage values after 15 days (P < .05). At 30 days, AH26 presented higher leakage values when compared to other sealers (P < .05). At 60 days, MBP and AH Plus presented the lower leakage values, differing significantly from EndoREZ (P < .05). CONCLUSION It was observed that AH Plus and the experimental MBP showed lower leakage after 60 days than AH 26 and EndoREZ.

Abstract
AIM To compare two different experimental models when measuring leakage along root fillings with or without smear layer. METHODOLOGY One hundred and twenty single-rooted teeth were prepared to size 50 and allocated to two groups: fluid transport model (n = 60) and glucose penetration model (n = 60). The roots in each group were divided into three subgroups of 20 teeth each. Smear layer was left in place in group 1 but removed in groups 2 and 3. In groups 1 and 2 canals were filled with laterally compacted gutta-percha cones and AH 26. Group 3 was laterally compacted with Resilon cones and Epiphany sealer. The coronal portion of the filling was removed to assure only 4 mm of filling remained in the canal. Leakage of glucose was evaluated by measuring its concentration once a week for a total period of 56 days using a glucose penetration model. Fluid transport was evaluated by measuring the movement of an air-bubble using a fluid transport model, 1 and 8 weeks after canal filling. Differences between the groups in glucose concentrations and fluid transport were statistically analysed with the Kruskal-Wallis and the Mann-Whitney tests. The level of significance was set at alpha = 0.05. RESULTS Glucose penetration was significantly different between the three groups after the first 8 days (P < 0.05). Resilon leaked the most throughout the experiment period. No significant difference (P > 0.05) existed between the two gutta-percha groups at all time intervals (Mann-Whitney test). In the fluid transportation model, no statistically significant differences were observed between all three experimental groups (P > 0.05) at either 1 or 8 weeks after filling (Kruskal-Wallis test). CONCLUSIONS Under the conditions of this study, the glucose penetration model was more sensitive in detecting leakage along root fillings. Removing the smear layer before filling did not improve the sealing of the apical 4 mm of filling. Resilon allowed more glucose penetration but the same amount of fluid transport as the gutta-percha root fillings.

Abstract
Enterococcus faecalis can survive for extended periods in obturated root canals. In this study, the hypotheses tested were that long-term survival of E. faecalis is dependent on (1) the type of endodontic sealer and (2) the capacity for microbial gelatinase activity, a potential "virulence" trait identified previously in clinical isolates. Root canals of extracted human canines (n=95) were inoculated with either E. faecalis OG1RF or its gelatinase-negative mutant E. faecalis TX5128. After 48 hours of incubation at 37 degrees C, canals were obturated with gutta-percha and either the epoxy-resin-based AH-Plus (Dentsply, De Trey, Konstanz, Germany), the silicone-based RoekoSeal (Coltène/Whaledent, Langenau, Germany), or zinc oxide eugenol-based Roth's sealer (Root Canal Cement Type 801; Roth International Ltd, Chicago, IL). Access cavities were sealed. After 8 months of incubation at 37 degrees C, viable E. faecalis was recovered from more teeth sealed with RoekoSeal (95%) compared with AH-Plus (40%) (p=0.0004, Fisher's exact test) and Roth's sealer (45%) (p=0.0012, Fisher's exact test). In the RoekoSeal groups, viable counts of E. faecalis OG1RF were higher than E. faecalis TX5128 (p=0.03, Mann-Whitney U test) suggesting that gelatinase activity plays a role in long-term survival of E. faecalis in obturated root canals.

Abstract
This study tested the hypothesis that the seal of EndoREZ may be improved with an adhesive-modified technique. Instrumented single-rooted teeth were filled with: (a) Warm vertical compaction with AH Plus (control); (b). EndoREZ with master cones and passive application of accessory cones; (c) Application of Clearfil Liner Bond 2V before EndoREZ and gutta-percha condensation. Leakage was assessed by fluid filtration at 10 psi before root resection and after 3 to 12 mm apical resections. Statistical analyses revealed significant differences in filling technique and resection lengths. EndoREZ exhibited significantly higher overall leakage, while no difference was found between AH Plus and the adhesive-modified EndoRez technique. Apical resection of EndoREZ to 12 mm exhibited more leakage than all other interactions, but was not significantly different from the same material resected to 9 mm. Although EndoREZ exhibited an acceptable apical seal, its coronal seal may be improved with the use of a dual-cured self-etch adhesive.

Abstract
The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the sealing ability of Resilon/Epiphany to gutta-percha and Roth or AH Plus sealers. Leakage of the obturated roots was measured using the fluid filtration technique. There were eight groups of 12 teeth each. Group 1: obturated with Resilon/Epiphany; group 2: obturated with gutta-percha/Roth, allowed to set for 3 wk; group 3: obturated with gutta-percha/Roth; group 4: obturated with Resilon/Epiphany using a single cone; group 5: obturated with Resilon cones without using primer/sealer (positive control); group 6: obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus; group 7: same as group 6, but allowed to set for 8 h; and group 8: sealed on the outside with three layers of nail varnish (negative control). The results showed that only the positive control (group 5) leaked significantly more (p < 0.05) than the other groups. There was no effect of time on leakage. Resilon/Epiphany was no better than gutta-percha/Roth or gutta-percha/AH Plus at sealing root canals.

Abstract
Recent studies detected erosion of the dentinal walls following the use of EDTA as a final flush. Several authors have studied degradation of EDTA and it appears to be caused by an oxidation reaction. The objective of this paper was to verify through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis if the oxidizing property of sodium hypochlorite inactivates EDTA. Solutions of sodium hypochlorite and EDTA were analyzed. EDTA tracing and the appearance of new signals indicative of by-products of the reaction, were studied at different time intervals with a NMR analysis. The tracings of NMR analysis confirmed that the reaction between sodium hypochlorite and EDTA lead to a very slow but progressive degradation of this compound. Mindful of the limitations of an in vitro study, the results of this study nevertheless demonstrated that a final flush with sodium hypochlorite cannot limit the chelating effects of EDTA in a clinically realistic time period.
