Abstract
Intermittent fasting (IF) has proven to be a feasible dietary intervention for the wider population. The recent increase in IF clinical trials highlights its potential effects on health, including changes in body composition, cardiometabolic status, and aging. Although IF may have clinical applications in different populations, studies suggest there may be sex-specific responses in parameters such as body composition or glucose and lipid metabolism. Here, the existing literature on IF clinical trials is summarized, the application of IF in both disease prevention and management is discussed, and potential disparities in response to this type of diet between men and women are assessed. Moreover, the potential mechanisms that may be contributing to the sexually dimorphic response, such as age, body composition, tissue distribution, or sex hormones are investigated. This review underscores the need to further study these sex-specific responses to IF to define the most effective time frames and length of fasting periods for men and women. Tailoring IF to specific populations with a personalized approach may help achieve its full potential as a lifestyle intervention with clinical benefits.

Abstract
Exercise and low-calorie diets are common approaches taken to produce an energy deficit for weight loss in obesity. Changes in visceral and abdominal subcutaneous fat associated with weight loss are important questions but have not yet been concluded. We investigated the relationship between changes in visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) areas obtained by abdominal imaging with the change in total body fat. The relevant databases were searched through January 2021 according to the PRISMA guidelines. Sixty-five studies were included. We found that the change in total body fat was associated with changes in both VAT and abdominal SAT areas, but the relationship between total body fat and the abdominal SAT area appeared stronger. Baseline values of VAT and abdominal SAT area were similar in the three treatment groups (calorie restriction, calorie restriction plus exercise, and exercise alone). The reduction in abdominal SAT area for a loss of 1 kg of total body fat was about 10 cm2, which was similar among all the treatments. The change in VAT area (-26.3 cm2) was a similar level as the change in abdominal SAT area (-31.5 cm2) in the exercise, whereas in the calorie restriction with and without exercise, the change in VAT area (-33.6 and -51.6 cm2, respectively) was approximately half of the reduction of SAT area (-65.1 and -87.2 cm2, respectively). Absolute changes in VAT and abdominal SAT areas might differ between interventions for the exercise and calorie restriction with and without exercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The purpose was to determine whether lifestyle interventions have different effects on regional fat in women with normal glucose tolerance vs. impaired glucose tolerance (NGT vs. IGT). METHODS Changes in glucose metabolism (2-h oral glucose-tolerance tests), android to gynoid fat mass ratio (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry [DXA]), visceral to subcutaneous abdominal fat area ratio (CT), and abdominal to gluteal subcutaneous fat cell weight (FCW; adipose tissue biopsies) were determined in 60 overweight postmenopausal women (45-80 years) following 6 months of weight loss alone (WL; n = 28) or with aerobic exercise (AEX + WL; n = 32). RESULTS The interventions led to ∼8% decrease in weight, but only the AEX + WL group improved fitness (↑11% in VO2max) and reduced the android-to-gynoid fat mass ratio (↓5%; p < 0.05). Both NGT and IGT groups reduced visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fat areas and abdominal and gluteal FCWs, which related to improvements in homeostatic model assessment (r = 0.34-0.42) and 2-h glucose (r = 0.34-0.35), respectively (p < 0.05). The decline in FCW was 2× greater in women with IGT following WL (p < 0.05). The ratios of abdominal-to-gluteal FCW did not change following either intervention. CONCLUSIONS The mechanisms by which WL with and without exercise impact regional fat loss should be explored as reductions in abdominal fat area and subcutaneous FCW appear to influence glucose metabolism. Abstract
Nutrition exerts a life-long impact on human health, and the interaction between nutrition and health has been known for centuries. The recent literature has suggested that nutrition could differently influence the health of male and female individuals. Until the last decade of the 20th century, research on women has been neglected, and the results obtained in men have been directly translated to women in both the medicine and nutrition fields. Consequently, most modern guidelines are based on studies predominantly conducted on men. However, there are many sex-gender differences that are the result of multifactorial inputs, including gene repertoires, sex steroid hormones, and environmental factors (e.g., food components). The effects of these different inputs in male and female physiology will be different in different periods of ontogenetic development as well as during pregnancy and the ovarian cycle in females, which are also age dependent. As a result, different strategies have evolved to maintain male and female body homeostasis, which, in turn, implies that there are important differences in the bioavailability, metabolism, distribution, and elimination of foods and beverages in males and females. This article will review some of these differences underlying the impact of food components on the risk of developing diseases from a sex-gender perspective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of maintaining only one of the two components of a food restriction (FR)+resistance training (RT) regimen on the regain of body weight and fat mass (liver and adipocytes) in ovariectomized (Ovx) rats. METHODS Five week Ovx rats were submitted to a weight loss program consisting of a 26% FR combined with RT (OvxFR+RT) for 8 weeks. RT consisted of climbing a 1.5m vertical grid with a load attached to the tail, 20-40 times with progressively increasing loads 4 times/week. Following this weight loss intervention, OvxFR+RT rats were sub-divided into 3 groups for an additional 5 weeks: 2 groups went back to a normal ad libitum feeding with or without RT and the other group kept only FR. RESULTS Combined FR+RT program in Ovx rats led to lower body mass gain, liver triacylglycerol (TAG) levels, and fat mass gain compared to sedentary normally fed Ovx rats (P<0.01). Stopping both FR and RT over a 5 week period resulted in the regain of body weight, intra-abdominal fat pad weight and liver TAG (P<0.01). When only FR was maintained, the regain of body and fat pad weight as well as liver and plasma TAG concentrations was completely prevented. However, when only RT was maintained, regain in the aforementioned parameters was attenuated but not prevented (P<0.05). CONCLUSION It is concluded that following a FR+RT weight loss program, continuation of only RT constitutes an asset to attenuate body weight and fat mass regain in Ovx rats; although the impact is less than the maintaining FR alone. These results suggest that, in post-menopausal women, RT is a positive strategy to reduce body weight and fat mass relapse.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fat mass gain and regain following weight loss are major concerns and may be even more critical after menopause. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of a resistance training protocol on body weight and fat mass in ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats following diet-induced weight loss. DESIGN Rats were randomly divided into ovariectomized (Ovx) and sham-operated (Sham) groups. Five weeks after ovariectomy, Ovx rats were subjected to a 26% food restriction (OvxFR) for 8 weeks. Following this period, OvxFR rats went back to a normal ad libitum feeding and were divided into two groups: either sedentary or undergoing a resistance training program for an additional 5 weeks, which consisted of climbing a 6-m vertical grill, 20-40 times, with progressively increasing load four times/week. RESULTS The food restriction program decreased (p < 0.01) body mass, fat pad weight (intra-abdominal and subcutaneous), and liver triacylglycerol (TAG) levels as compared to normally fed Ovx rats. Stopping the food restriction program over a 5-week period resulted in a partial regain in body weight and intra-abdominal fat pad weight (p < 0.05), and in an almost complete regain in liver TAG compared to normally fed Ovx rats. On the other hand, no significant increases in these variables were noted when the food restriction was replaced by resistance training over the same 5-week period. CONCLUSION These results indicate that a resistance training program could be useful in preventing body weight as well as adipose tissue and liver fat regain in Ovx rats, following diet-induced weight loss. It is suggested that changing from a food restriction regimen to a resistance training program can be an interesting strategy to promote successful long-term weight reduction in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
AIM No studies have assessed if changes in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) during weight loss differ between women and men with comparable amounts of VAT at baseline. The aim of this study was to assess if changes in VAT induced by a low-calorie diet (LCD) differ between women and men. METHODS In this post hoc analysis of an existing database, abdominal adipose tissue was evaluated before and after an 8-week LCD (800-1000 kcal/day) by a single-slice magnetic resonance scan performed at the abdominal level. Body composition was measured by dual X-ray energy absorptiometry. RESULTS Data from 111 obese subjects (85 women and 26 men) were available. Relative changes in VAT were found to be more pronounced in men [mean (95% CI): -32.6% (-38.7 to -26.6)] than in women [-21.9% (-25.0 to -18.8)] (p = 0.003) after correction for relative changes in fat mass (FM). When analysing only the data from a subgroup of 23 women and 23 men who were matched for similar visceral to abdominal subcutaneous fat ratio at baseline, these differences could not be observed anymore: the change in VAT was -33.7% (-38.7 to -28.7) in men and -26.8% (-31.8 to -21.8) in women (p = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that relative changes in VAT during a LCD may be greater in men than in women even after taking relative changes in FM into account. However, these differences disappear when properly matching the subjects for baseline amounts of VAT.

Abstract
Obesity prevalence is generally higher in women than in men, and there is also a sex difference in body fat distribution. Sex differences in obesity can be explained in part by the influence of gonadal steroids on body composition and appetite; however, behavioural, socio-cultural and chromosomal factors may also play a role. This review, which evolved from the 2008 Stock Conference on sex differences in obesity, summarizes current research and recommendations related to hormonal and neuroendocrine influences on energy balance and fat distribution. A number of important gaps in the research are identified, including a need for more studies on chromosomal sex effects on energy balance, the role of socio-cultural (i.e. gender) factors in obesity and the potential deleterious effects of high-fat diets during pregnancy on the foetus. Furthermore, there is a paucity of clinical trials examining sex-specific approaches and outcomes of obesity treatment (lifestyle-based or pharmacological), and research is urgently needed to determine whether current weight loss programmes, largely developed and tested on women, are appropriate for men. Last, it is important that both animal and clinical research on obesity be designed and analysed in such a way that data can be separately examined in both men and women.

Abstract
There are likely many scenarios and pathways that can lead to metabolic syndrome. This paper reviews mechanisms by which the accumulation of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) may contribute to the metabolic syndrome, and explores the paradigm of a critical VAT threshold (CVATT). Exceeding the CVATT may result in a number of metabolic disturbances such as insulin resistance to glucose uptake by cells. Metabolic profiles of patients with visceral obesity may substantially improve after only modest weight loss. This could reflect a significant reduction in the amount of VAT relative to peripheral or subcutaneous fat depots, thereby maintaining VAT below the CVATT. The CVATT may be unique for each individual. This may help explain the phenomena of apparently lean individuals with metabolic syndrome, the so-called metabolically normal weight (MONW), as well as the obese with normal metabolic profiles, i.e., metabolically normal obese (MNO), and those who are "fit and fat." The concept of CVATT may have implications for prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, which may include controlling dietary carbohydrates. The identification of the CVATT is admittedly difficult and its anatomical boundaries are not well-defined. Thus, the CVATT will continue to be a work in progress.

Abstract
Studies in women with type 2 diabetes demonstrated adverse effects on body fat distribution of a low-fat diet relative to a high monounsaturated fat diet. We performed a randomized 12-wk parallel design study of two 6000-kJ diets: 35% energy from fat (high monounsaturated fat diet, HIMO), or 12% energy from fat (very low-fat diet, VLF) to determine whether this also occurred in nondiabetic women. Body fat distribution, fasting plasma glucose, blood pressure, and fasting serum lipids were measured at wk 0 and 12 in 62 women (BMI > 27 kg/m(2)). Weight loss (9.5 +/- 2.4 vs. 9.4 +/- 3.4 kg, VLF vs. HIMO) and total fat loss (6.1 +/- 2.4 vs. 6.3 +/- 2.7 kg, VLF vs. HIMO) did not differ in the groups. There was a diet x menopausal status interaction in lean mass changes (P = 0.005) such that in premenopausal women, HIMO produced a lower loss of lean mass than the low-fat diet (0.4 +/- 2.3 vs. 2.9 +/- 2.7 kg, P = 0.006) with the opposite but nonsignificant effect seen in postmenopausal women. There was a greater decrease in total plasma cholesterol in women who consumed VLF compared with those who consumed HIMO (0.82 +/- 0.0.51 vs. 0.50 +/- 0.48 mmol/L, P < 0.001 for time, P < 0.05 for diet effect). This was also true for the change in HDL cholesterol (0.18 +/- 0.23 vs. 0.04 +/- 0.19 mmol/L, VLF and HIMO, respectively, P < 0.001 for time, P < 0.05 for diet effect). The LDL/HDL ratio was reduced in both groups with no effect of diet (0.16 +/- 0.51 vs. 0.16 +/- 0.45, VLF and HIMO, respectively, P < 0.05). In conclusion, weight, total fat mass, and regional fat mass loss did not differ in the 2 groups of women but there was an apparent preservation of lean mass in premenopausal women consuming HIMO.
