Abstract
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) could be a risk factor for the development of preterm neonates due to the stressful procedures they undergo. Stress-related behaviors must be managed through environmental strategies that support regulating the neonates' biobehavioural system to minimize the negative impact on their development. The study aimed to compare the NICU environment's stressful procedures and developmental care strategies and the stress and self-regulation behaviors of preterm neonates in groups differentiated by the NICU environmental design. The sample comprised 20 preterm neonates hospitalized in a NICU with an open-bay model (OB NICU) and 20 preterm neonates hospitalized in a single-family room model (SFR NICU). The stressful procedures were assessed by the Neonatal Infant Stressor Scale (NISS). The developmental care strategies and the preterm neonates' stress and self-regulation behaviors were assessed using a structured observational protocol. The between-group comparison was performed by the Mann-Whitney test, and the significance level was set at 5%. Both NICUs had similar stressful procedures and developmental care approaches. However, the preterm neonates hospitalized in the SFR NICU exhibited significantly fewer total stress behaviors, and specifically in the motor system, compared to those in the OB NICU. Additionally, the preterm neonates hospitalized in the SFR NICU exhibited significantly more total self-regulation behaviors, and specifically in the behavioral state system, compared to those in the OB NICU. The findings showed that the single-family room NICU model was consistent with the environmental protection of biobehavioural regulation in preterm neonates hospitalized in the NICU.

Abstract
Background Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) is the first choice approach in neonates with sufficient respiratory effort that require respiratory support. The type of nasal interface used in NIV affects both efficacy and patient comfort. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of different nasal interfaces used in NIV support on neonatal patient comfort. Methods Our study evaluated patients who received NIV support for 24 hours. The patients were randomly divided into two groups according to the type of nasal interface used, which were RAM cannula and short binasal prong (SBP). The patients' demographic and clinical data were noted. Their sleep was monitored for 24 hours with an actigraphy device. Results A total of 82 patients were evaluated. The sleep efficiency in the RAM cannula group was significantly higher (respectively, 65.7% [10.22-95.25] vs. 57.81% [2.49-77], p=0.004). Although not statistically significant, the neonates in the RAM cannula group exhibited longer total sleep time (respectively, 10.4 ± 4.28 hours vs. 9.02 ± 3.73 hours, p=0.161). Comparison of heart rates and respiratory rates indicate that the patients in the RAM cannula group were more comfortable. Conclusions Our study found that infants who received NIV support through a RAM cannula experienced more efficient sleep. Holistic approaches in neonatal intensive care units are vital for better neurodevelopmental outcomes in newborns. Although non-invasive, the interface used in NIV should also be a part of this holistic approach.

Micro-preemie Parents' Perceptions of Trauma-Informed Developmental Neuroprotective Care and Nursing Support. Adv Neonatal Care 2022; 22:422-431. Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm birth is traumatic for both the infant and parents. Trauma-informed developmental neuroprotective care (TIDNC) may positively influence the outcomes for micro-preemie infants (infants born before 26 weeks' gestation) as well as support parents in crisis. PURPOSE To explore how TIDNC influences micro-preemie parents' perceptions of nursing care and support. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at a 56-bed level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A convenience sample of micro-preemie parents (n = 16, 46%) completed the Nurse Parent Support Tool (NPST) questionnaire, which included 2 open-ended questions. RESULTS These parents scored high scores on the NPST (mean = 4.62 ± 0.24), indicating most parents felt support from the nursing staff and perceived individualized family-centered high-quality nursing care. Subscale scores were higher than all previous studies. Parents perceived high levels of support most of the time to almost always. Although 4 themes were closely associated with the subscales, the fifth theme, Praise has not been previously documented. Parents were grateful for nurses who provided compassionate care and support during one of the most difficult times of their lives. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE TIDNC encourages robust nurse-parent authentic caring relationships, which are foundational to the parents' perceptions of nursing care and support. These relationships, built on mutual trust, respect, and genuine listening, appear to foster an exceptionally high degree of support. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH More research is needed to examine how unit culture, characteristics of nurses, parents, and infants as well as infant outcomes influence micro-preemie parents' perception of care and further explore the nature of support.

Abstract
Positioning and handling is a core measure of developmental care that has been universally difficult to implement in the technical NICU environment. Appropriate positioning has been shown to not only improve postural and musculoskeletal outcomes, but enhance sensory development, physiologic stability, thermal regulation, behavioral organization, sleep facilitation, and brain development. In order to improve the developmental positioning practices of bedside nurses in a level III neonatal intensive care unit, a quality improvement project was initiated. Guided by the Iowa Model for Evidence-Based Practice, this project included an evidence-based educational intervention and a standardized positioning assessment tool. After the intervention, there was improvement in knowledge scores, and positioning scores increased from an average of 8.81 +/- 0.19 to 10.93 +/- 0.15.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm infant are still a contemporary concern. To counter the detrimental effects resulting from the hospitalisation in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), developmental care (DC) interventions have emerged as a philosophy of care aimed at protecting and enhancing preterm infant's development and promoting parental outcomes. In the past two decades, many authors have suggested DC models, core measures, practice guidelines and standards of care but outlined different groupings of interventions rather than specific interventions that can be used in NICU clinical practice. Moreover, as these DC interventions are mostly implemented by neonatal nurses, it would be strategic and valuable to identify specific outcome indicators to make visible the contribution of NICU nurses to DC. OBJECTIVES The overarching objective of this review is to identify the nature, range, and extent of the literature regarding DC nursing interventions for preterm infants in the NICU. The secondary twofold objectives are to highlight interventions that fall into identified categories of DC interventions and suggest nursing-sensitive outcome indicators related to DC interventions in the NICU. INCLUSION CRITERIA Papers reporting on or discussing a DC nursing intervention during NICU hospitalisation will be included. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The Joanna Briggs Institute's methodology for scoping reviews will be followed. CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest and PsycInfo databases from 2009 to the present will be searched. Any type of paper, published in English or French, will be considered. Study selection and data extraction will be conducted by pairs of two review authors independently. A qualitative content analysis will be conducted. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No Institutional Review Board ethical approbation is needed. Results of this review will be presented in scientific meetings and published in refereed papers.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo: analisar a frequência da aplicação das medidas centrais dos cuidados desenvolvimentais ao recém-nascido prematuro em unidades de cuidados neonatais portuguesas e identificar a sua relação com variáveis organizacionais. Método: estudo transversal, descritivo-correlacional. Utilizando técnica de amostragem não probabilística em rede, foi obtida uma amostra de 217 enfermeiros de unidades neonatais portuguesas que responderam online ao questionário Quantum Caring Practice Self-Assessment, traduzido e validado para enfermeiros portugueses. Resultados: os resultados revelaram que para 65,4% dos enfermeiros as práticas de cuidados centrados no desenvolvimento são realizadas às vezes e 14,3% consideram que raramente são realizadas. Somente 18,9% dos enfermeiros inquiridos consideram que essas práticas são realizadas frequentemente. Destacaram-se como práticas mais frequentes, as ligadas ao Ambiente terapêutico e Prevenção da dor e stress. As menos frequentes foram as medidas de Posicionamento e Cuidados à pele. Os resultados demonstraram ainda que a frequência das práticas de cuidados desenvolvimentais difere consoante a localização geográfica das unidades e é mais elevada nas unidades com maior nível de diferenciação de cuidados e que têm instituído um programa/protocolo específico de cuidados desenvolvimentais. Conclusão: as práticas de cuidados centrados no desenvolvimento não são realizadas de forma consistente nas unidades de cuidados neonatais portuguesas, apesar de serem exequíveis. É necessária uma mudança global na cultura das equipas, mais formação, implementação de protocolos e investimento organizacional nesta área.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: the present and future well-being of hospitalized newborns and their parents are connected to analyze the application frequency of the central practices of developmental care to premature newborns in Portuguese neonatal care units and to identify their relationship with organizational variables. Method: cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study. Using a non-probabilistic network sampling technique, a sample of 217 nurses from Portuguese neonatal units who answered the Quantum Caring Practice Self-Assessment online questionnaire was obtained, previously translated and validated for Portuguese nurses. Results: the results revealed that for 65.4% of nurses, Developmental Care practices are sometimes performed and 14.3% consider that they are rarely performed. Only 18.9% of the nurses in the study consider that these practices are performed frequently. The most frequent practices were those related to the therapeutic environment and prevention of pain and stress. The least frequent was positioning and skin care. The results also showed that the frequency of developmental care practices differs depending on the geographical location of the units and is higher in units with a higher level of treatment differentiation and that have established a specific program/protocol of developmental care. Conclusion: although feasible, Developmental Care practices are not performed consistently in Portuguese neonatal care units. A global change in team culture, more training, implementation of protocols and organizational investment in this area is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individualized family-centered developmental care (IFDC) is considered the standard of care for premature/medically fragile newborns and their families in intensive care units (ICUs). Such care for infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) varies. OBJECTIVE The Consortium for Congenital Cardiac Care- Measurement of Nursing Practice (C4-MNP) was surveyed to determine the state of IFDC for infants younger than 6 months with CHD in ICUs. METHODS An electronic survey was disseminated to 1 nurse at each participating center. The survey included questions on IFDC-related nursing practice, organized in 4 sections: demographics, nursing practice, interdisciplinary practice, and parent support. Data were summarized by using descriptive statistics. Differences in IFDC practices and IFDC-related education were assessed, and practices were compared across 3 clinical scenarios of varying infant acuity by using the χ2 test. RESULTS The response rate was 66% (25 centers). Most respondents (72%) did not have IFDC guidelines; 63% incorporated IFDC interventions and 67% documented IFDC practices. Only 29% reported that their ICU had a neurodevelopmental team. Significant differences were reported across the 3 clinical scenarios for 11 of 14 IFDC practices. Skin-to-skin holding was provided least often across all levels of acuity. Nurse education related to IFDC was associated with more use of IFDC (P < .05). CONCLUSION Practices related to IFDC vary among ICUs. Opportunities exist to develop IFDC guidelines for infants with CHD to inform clinical practice and nurse education. Next steps include convening a C4-MNP group to develop guidelines and implement IFDC initiatives for collaborative evaluation.

Abstract
Objective:Disruption of smooth intrauterine brain development is a significant consequence of premature birth that may lead to adverse neurological outcomes. Although noteworthy progress has been made in the management of prematurity, the rates of neonatal morbidity and neurodevelopmental disorders remain high, underlining the need to find clinical practices that particularly protect the central nervous system. Aim:To identify recent articles regarding pharmacological and non-pharmacological brain-focused clinical practices (BFCP) for premature neonates at high risk of neuronal injury. Material and methods:We did an extensive search of PubMed and Google Scholar for relevant research published between 2000 and 2020. Results:Nineteen full-length original research papers fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were selected for the purpose of the present review. Non-pharmacological BFCP intend to improve the neonate's experience in the NICU environment and can be applied by a multidisciplinary team, while pharmacological ones are related to novel molecules that aim to quell apoptosis and inflammation or promote neurogenesis. Conclusion:In the future, a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological BFCP might be considered as the most promising protection and/or treatment provided in clinical practice to premature neonates at high risk of neuronal injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevention of neurodevelopmental sequelae is a high priority in the care of infants with congenital heart defects. Individualized family-centered developmental care has been identified as a promising approach to promote infant neurodevelopment during hospitalization. OBJECTIVE To educate nurses on the concept of individualized family-centered developmental care and its application to nursing practice and to reduce perceived barriers to its implementation. METHODS Two evidence-based visual educational tools called "developmental care flowers" were created and implemented in the inpatient and procedural units of a cardiac center. Each flower petal represented a core component of individualized family-centered developmental care: cue-based care, patient positioning, supportive environment, and parent engagement. Surveys were administered before and after the educational intervention to assess changes in nurses' knowledge and perceptions of individualized family-centered developmental care. RESULTS Nurses reported that the developmental care flowers improved their understanding of individualized family-centered developmental care. The educational tools reduced some perceived barriers to implementation of this care model and increased nurse-reported inclusion of parents in care. Qualitative feedback from staff members regarding the tools was positive and acknowledged that individualized family-centered developmental care should be an ongoing priority. CONCLUSIONS The inpatient and procedural developmental care flowers are useful tools for educating nurses about individualized family-centered developmental care. They could be revised into more interactive tools that might be used to educate parents and further support the integration of this care concept into nursing practice.

Abstract
Infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) require carefully designed risk-adjusted management encompassing a broad spectrum of neonatal subgroups. Key components of an optimal neuroprotective healing NICU environment are presented to support consistent quality of care delivery across NICU settings and levels of care. This article presents a perspective on the role of neonatal therapists-occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists-in the provision of elemental risk-adjusted neuroprotective care services. In alignment with professional organization competency recommendations from these disciplines, a broad overview of neonatal therapy services is described. Recognizing the staffing budget as one of the more difficult challenges hospital department leaders face, the authors present a formula-based approach to address staff allocations for neonatal therapists working in NICU settings. The article has been reviewed and endorsed by the National Association of Neonatal Therapists, National Association of Neonatal Nurses, and the National Perinatal Association.

Abstract
The use of age-appropriate care as an organized framework for care delivery in the neonatal intensive care unit is founded on the work of Heidelise Als, PhD, and her synactive theory of development. This theoretical construct has recently been advanced by the work of Gibbins and colleagues with the "universe of developmental care" conceptual model and developmental care core measures which were endorsed by the National Association of Neonatal Nurses in their age-appropriate care of premature infant guidelines as best-practice standards for the provision of high-quality care in the neonatal intensive care unit. These guidelines were recently revised and expanded. In alignment with the Joint Commission's requirement for health-care professionals to provide age-specific care across the lifespan, the core measures for developmental care suggest the necessary competencies for those caring for the premature and critically ill hospitalized infant. Further supported by the Primer Standards of Accreditation and Health Canada, the institutional implementation of theses core measures requires a strong framework for institutional operationalization, presented in these guidelines. Part A of this article will present the background and rationale behind the present guidelines and their condensed table of recommendations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As survival improves in the congenital heart disease (CHD) population, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes become increasingly important. While surgery improves survival, poor HRQOL occurs postoperatively and cardiac-related HRQOL outcomes are rarely reported. OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review and meta-analyses of general and cardiac-related HRQOL in CHD surgical children and young adults. METHOD Medline, CINAHL and EMBASE were searched. Quantitative designs with a minimum of 80% CHD surgical patients and mean age ≤18 years compared with healthy controls were included in the review. Data were analysed in RevMan V.5.3 using a random effects model. OUTCOME MEASURES General and cardiac-related HRQOL. RESULTS Studies (n=20) were conducted in high-income countries and included 3808 patients plus 2951 parental reports of patients. HRQOL was worse in postoperative patients with CHD versus healthy controls in all domains with the largest difference seen for physical function (standard mean difference (SMD) of -0.56, 95% CI -0.82 to -0.30). Cardiac-related HRQOL was worse in complex compared with simple CHD with the largest SMD (-0.60, 95% CI -0.80 to -0.40) for symptoms. Heterogeneity ranged from 0% to 90%. CONCLUSIONS CHD surgical patients have substantially worse HRQOL compared with age-matched healthy controls. Strategies should focus on improving HRQOL in this subgroup. Results may not be applicable to low/middle-income countries given the dearth of relevant research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The following article constitutes an effort to make explicit an experience in neonatology within the framework of the exercise of occupational therapy, a discipline belonging to the health sciences. The occupational therapist (OT) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in which he participates in an interdisciplinary health group. Exalts the interaction of person-environment-occupation-performance. Encourage self-regulation of the baby. Encourages family participation in co-participation in routine activities. OBJECTIVE To determine the realities and knowledge about the practice of OT in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by the occupational therapist in the interaction between the baby, the occupation, the caregivers and the environment of the NICU. METHODS A systematic exploratory review of the performance of the OT in the NICU was made. RESULTS The results transcended the thematic variables, the theories, the methods, the approaches, the characteristics of the baby, the occupations, and the contexts of the management of the premature baby. CONCLUSION The education in concepts concerning the occupation of the baby, the interaction with her/his environment and her/his caregivers, the procedures, the guide for the stimulation as the modification of the physical, temporal and social environment facilitate the self-regulation of the baby and we will all be working in pro of your recovery.

Abstract
Developmental care measures are integrated in the NICU, but these measures are largely overlooked when it comes to standard care activities such as diapering. This general review of developmental care in the NICU discusses how caregivers can apply appropriate, individualized developmental care measures to diapering regimens. Numerous opportunities to expand developmental care measures into diapering care are identified; these opportunities can protect and promote sleep for hospitalized infants, enhance the diapering environment, minimize stress that infants may experience with diapering, improve infant skin health outcomes through use of evidence-based skin care practices, and foster family involvement during diapering care in the NICU. A developmental approach to diapering offers hospitalized infants regular opportunities to reach their neurodevelopmental potential.

Abstract
THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES Improved survival of infants and children with congenital heart disease experience has led to recognition that up to half of congenital heart disease survivors also experience developmental delay. Developmentally supportive care is a care model shown in Neonatal Intensive Care Units to be associated with improved outcomes, but developmentally supportive practices with premature infants may not be equally effective in the cardiac population that includes all ages. PHENOMENA ADDRESSED The purpose of this paper is to present a concept analysis using the Walker and Avant method in order to identify and define characteristics of developmentally supportive care as it may be applied to the population of neonates, infants, and children with congenital heart disease. A theoretical definition of developmentally supportive care is presented. RESEARCH LINKAGES This concept analysis will provide nurses and allied health professionals with a theoretical basis to implement high quality, family-centered care that meets individual developmental needs in a population at high risk for developmental sequelae. Nursing implications for developmentally supportive care as it applies to infants and children with heart disease are discussed.

Abstract
Procedural distress is a common occurrence in the NICU and is tied to attempts to support the life and development of vulnerable premature infants. We discuss the epidemiology of procedural distress and the potential negative consequences on infant neurodevelopment. We define procedural distress in the NICU and outline three approaches to limit or to reduce its detrimental effects including minimizing the number of procedures, instituting measures for developmentally supportive care, and using preemptively pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic analgesia. Despite the pervasiveness of procedural distress in the NICU, clinical and administrative measures are available to ameliorate possible harmful outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the implementation of neurodevelopmental care for newborn preterm infants in neonatal ICUs in France in 2011, analyze changes since 2004, and investigate factors associated with practice. DESIGN Prospective national cohort study of all births before 32 weeks of gestation. SETTING Twenty-five French regions. PARTICIPANTS All neonatal ICUs (n = 66); neonates surviving at discharge (n = 3,005). INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Neurodevelopmental care policies and practices were assessed by structured questionnaires. Proportions of neonates initiating kangaroo care during the first week of life and those whose mothers expressed breast milk were measured as neurodevelopmental care practices. Multilevel logistic regression analyses were used to investigate relationships between kangaroo care or breast-feeding practices and unit policies, taking into account potential confounders. Free visiting policies, bed availability for parents, and kangaroo care encouragement significantly improved between 2004 and 2011 but with large variabilities between units. Kangaroo care initiation varied from 39% for neonates in the most restrictive units to 68% in less restrictive ones (p < 0.001). Individual factors associated with kangaroo care initiation were gestational age (odds ratio, 5.79; 95% CI, 4.49-7.48 for babies born at 27-31 wk compared with babies born at 23-26 wk) and, to a lesser extent, single pregnancy, birthweight above the 10th centile, and mother's employment before pregnancy. At unit level, policies and training in neurodevelopmental care significantly influenced kangaroo care initiation (odds ratio, 3.5; 95% CI, 1.8-7.0 for Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program implementation compared with no training). Breast milk expression by mothers was greater in units with full-time availability professionals trained for breast-feeding support (60% vs 73%; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Dissemination of neurodevelopmental practices occurred between 2004 and 2011, but large variabilities between units persist. Practices increased in units with supportive policies. Specific neurodevelopmental care training with multifaceted interventions strengthened the implementation of policies.

Abstract
The focus of neonatal nursing has shifted from a highly technical approach to one of supportive interventions and a more individualized developmental approach. Developmental care is described as a philosophy of care that requires rethinking the relationships between infants, families, and healthcare professionals. Various models of developmental care exist; however, they all include a variety of activities designed to manage the environment and individualize the care provided to premature and/or sick infants.

Abstract
NICU nurses have an important role to play in many aspects of parent education. This article stresses the need for an increased focus on teaching parents about the central role that self-regulation will play in their infant's neurobehavioral development not only during the early infancy period but throughout all of childhood and adolescence. Suggestions are made about how to conceptualize the relation between cognition and emotions in humans and how to help parents understand that continued vigilance concerning potential problems in attention and self-regulation will be necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The "synactive" theory of neurobehavioral development forms the basis of the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP). Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of NIDCAP in improving outcomes in preterm infants. METHODS Medline, CINAHL, Embase, PsychInfo, The Cochrane Library, Pediatric Academic Societies' Abstracts and Web of Science were searched in July 2010 and February 2012. The studies selected were randomized controlled trials testing the effectiveness of NIDCAP on medical and neurodevelopmental outcomes. The authors abstracted baseline characteristics of infants and outcomes. The risk of bias was assessed by using Cochrane criteria. RevMan 5.1 was used to synthesize data by the use of relative risk and risk difference for dichotomous outcomes and mean or standardized mean difference for continuous outcomes. RESULTS Eleven primary and 7 secondary studies enrolling 627 neonates were included, with 2 of high quality. The composite primary outcomes of death or major sensorineural disability at 18 months corrected age or later in childhood (3 trials, 302 children; relative risk 0.89 [95% confidence interval 0.61 to 1.29]) and survival free of disability at 18 months corrected age or later in childhood (2 trials, 192 infants; relative risk 0.97 [95% confidence interval 0.69 to 1.35]), were not significantly different between the NIDCAP and control groups. With the sensitivity analysis that excluded the 2 statistically heterogeneous outlying studies, there were no significant differences between groups for short-term medical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review including 627 preterm infants did not find any evidence that NIDCAP improves long-term neurodevelopmental or short-term medical outcomes.

Abstract
Family-centered developmental care is an essential element of neonatal intensive care. It is of particular importance when the infant is vulnerable and at greater risk for poor outcomes complicated by a family unit that is easily challenged by the unique needs of the infant. Yet, all infants and their families deserve this philosophy of caregiving. Family-centered developmental care must continue to be tested through research to determine which interventions work, what does not work, and which interventions need further refinement. This article provides a brief history of where we have been in neonatal caregiving, provides definitions for family-centered developmental caregiving and offers some "predictions" about where these practices need to be in the next century. Research questions and strategies are also addressed. As we continue to forge ahead integrating this philosophy into the caregiving arena, it is important to remember that there are many unanswered questions.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this research was to test the hypothesis that parental satisfaction with neonatal intensive care is greater in a single-family room facility as compared with a conventional open-bay neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: This investigation was a prospective cohort study comparing satisfaction survey results for parents who responded to a commercially available parent NICU satisfaction survey following the provision of NICU care in open-bay and single-family room facilities. A subset of 16 items indicative of family-centered care was also computed and compared for these two NICU facilities. Results: Parents whose babies received care in the single-family room facility expressed significantly improved survey responses in regard to the NICU environment, overall assessment of care, and total survey score than did parents of neonates in the open-bay facility. With the exception of the section on nursing in which scores in both facilities were high, nonsignificant improvement in median scores for the sections on delivery, physicians, discharge planning, and personal issues were noted. The total median item score for family-centered care was significantly greater in the single-family room than the open-bay facility. Conclusions: Parental satisfaction with care in the single-family room NICU was improved in comparison with the traditional open-bay NICU. The single-family room environment appears more conducive to the provision of family-centered care. Improved parental satisfaction with care and the potential for enhanced family-centered care need to be considered in decisions made regarding the configuration of NICU facilities in the future.

Abstract
Title Core measures for developmentally supportive care in neonatal intensive care units: theory, precedence and practice. Aim This paper is a discussion of evidence-based core measures for developmental care in neonatal intensive care units. Background Inconsistent definition, application and evaluation of developmental care have resulted in criticism of its scientific merit. The key concept guiding data organization in this paper is the United States of America’s Joint Commission’s concept of ‘core measures’ for evaluating and accrediting healthcare organizations. This concept is applied to five disease- and procedure-independent measures based on the Universe of Developmental Care model. Data sources Electronically accessible, peer reviewed studies on developmental care published in English were culled for data supporting the selected objective core measures between 1978 and 2008. The quality of evidence was based on a structured predetermined format that included three independent reviewers. Systematic reviews and randomized control trials were considered the strongest level of evidence. When unavailable, cohort, case control, consensus statements and qualitative methods were considered the strongest level of evidence for a particular clinical issue. Discussion Five core measure sets for evidence-based developmental care were evaluated: (1) protected sleep, (2) pain and stress assessment and management, (3) developmental activities of daily living, (4) family-centred care, and (5) the healing environment. These five categories reflect recurring themes that emerged from the literature review regarding developmentally supportive care and quality caring practices in neonatal populations. This practice model provides clear metrics for nursing actions having an impact on the hospital experience of infant-family dyads. Conclusion Standardized disease-independent core measures for developmental care establish minimum evidence-based practice expectations and offer an objective basis for cross-institutional comparison of developmental care programmes.

Abstract
NICU nurses have an important role to play in many aspects of parent education. This article stresses the need for an increased focus on teaching parents about the central role that self-regulation will play in their infant's neurobehavioral development not only during the early infancy period but throughout all of childhood and adolescence. Suggestions are made about how to conceptualize the relation between cognition and emotions in humans and how to help parents understand that continued vigilance concerning potential problems in attention and self-regulation will be necessary.

Abstract
This study explored effects of exposure to maternal voice on short-term outcomes in very low birth weight preterm infants cared for within an neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) without an ongoing program of developmental care. Using a comparative design, 53 infants born during their 27th to 28th postmenstrual week were sampled by convenience. Experimental groups were exposed to maternal voice during two developmental time periods. Group 1 listened to a recording of their mothers reciting a rhyme from 28 to 34 postmenstrual weeks. Group 2 waited 4 weeks and heard the recording from 32 to 34 weeks. The control group received routine care. The primary analysis of combined experimental groups compared to the control group revealed that the experimental infants experienced significantly fewer episodes of feeding intolerance and achieved full enteral feeds quicker compared to the control group. Further, in an analysis evaluating all three groups separately, it was noted that Group 1 experienced significantly fewer episodes of feeding intolerance compared to the control group. Study findings warrant further investigation of exposure to maternal voice and the developmental timing at which exposure is begun.
